stfx’s athletic superstars FEATURE BY SARAH PATZELT AND SHELBI KILCOLLINS
While most of us are afforded the luxuries of late afternoon sleep-ins, drinking on socially unacceptable nights, and consuming copious amounts of pizza, one demographic on campus is denied such freedoms: our varsity athletes. Although the average individual may see these restrictions as an overwhelming sacrifice, our X athletes see the chance to represent blue and white on the field as a privilege. Our teams’ outcomes on the field so far this fall are reflecting their dedication. On October 28th, X-Women’s Rugby beat Acadia to take back the AUS championship throne with an outstanding score of 62-0. The X-Women have thus far gone undefeated in the 2016 season and plan to continue their domination at the CIS championship in Victoria, BC, starting with Concordia in the national quarterfinal game on Thursday, November 3rd. Our X-Men Cross Country have followed suit, placing first overall at the AUS Cross Country Championships for the sixth season in a row. Five male Xaverian runners were featured in the 2016 AUS Cross Country all-star roundup. The boys’ coach, Bernie Chisholm, also won AUS Male Cross Country Coach of the Year. Football is once again having a spectacular season, with a winning streak for the entire month of October and a guaranteed spot in the AUS final, the Loney Bowl, which will be hosted at StFX on November 12th at 2:00 pm at the Oland Stadium. Several of Head Coach Gary Waterman’s players have been honoured as CIS Athletes of the Week and AUS Athletes of the Week, including Kaion Grant, Dylan Bell and Hayden Peters. The X-Men are hungry and are clearly prepared for another chance at the Uteck title, one of the two semi-finals in Canadian Interuniversity Sport Men's Football and the final step before the coveted Vanier Cup game. It should be noted that other squads like X-Men Hockey, although coming off a few losses, continue to sit among the top 10 teams in the standings for CIS. X-Women Hockey currently sits in the middle of the AUS pack. Basketball and Track and Field have not yet begun their regular season but show immense promise and yearning for more AUS titles. X athletes’ steadfast mentality and their commitment to honouring our school in the sports realm is prominent, and continues to garner worthy attention to our small institution.
