SANTA FE A NING
KEEPING IT CHILL
By Anya Sebastian
Santa Fe Awning was started almost 30 years ago by a single dad with two young kids and virtually no income. Jeff Maul did everything himself, working out of his home. He completed design work at the kitchen table, sewed awnings in the living room, and welded steel frames on the back patio. His 12 year-old daughter, Sara, would frequently answer the phone.
The company has come a long way since then and recently moved from a 6,000sq. foot building to a 12,000sq. foot space on Rodeo Park Drive. Sara, who went on to get a degree in business, now runs the company and is celebrating her 20th anniversary with Santa Fe Awning this year. “My dad is still very much involved,” she says, “and my goal is to continue to support and expand his vision.”
The company’s handiwork can be seen all over town, from the awnings at Meow Wolf, to the impressive, outside shade structure at the Opera House. “Everything is made to order,” says Sara, “and we do all kinds of jobs, from specialty work like the opera, which took 4500 tons of steel to complete and had us working seven days a week, to small window screens and skylight covers.”
About 80 percent of the company’s business is, in fact, residential and most of that consists of patio screens. ‘Many homes in Santa Fe are west-facing, in order to take advantage of the wonderful sunsets,” explains Sara, “and traditional awnings would block the view and the sun would just go underneath them anyway, so screens are really the best option.” Jeff was actually the first to bring 126 inch-wide milled fabric onto the market about 18 years ago. Before that, there was a seam running down the middle of the screen, which interfered with the view and he really wanted it to be a seamless view.
Technology has, of course, manifested progress in other areas as well. Patio and window screens can now be motorized and operated by cell phone, making it possible for them to be raised or lowered from anywhere in the world.
Patio screens are a popular item, because they block the sun, but not the view, and make it possible to still enjoy the summer weather outside without being exposed to damaging solar rays. Screens also protect carpets, rugs, furniture and works of art from fading and sun damage.
Every project starts out with a complimentary on-site design consultation, so if your home has a sun problem in need of a solution, call the experts at Santa Fe Awning. Those summer months are only going to get hotter, after all!

Warren the rep at Santa Fe Awning, showed us his expertise by designing and engineering a 40 foot, 3 panel shade all operating together. The awning shades the westside of our house which makes evening entertaining more comfortable and prevents the furniture outside and inside from fading. After a couple of months we noticed that one of the fabric panels had a defect, when we called Santa Fe Awning, they came out immediately to look at it. Then they made a new replacement panel at no cost to us. Santa Fe Awning stands behind their work, are always friendly and kept us informed. We are beyond pleased with the results and since the shade has been installed we now enjoy sitting outside anytime of the day and not worrying about the sun shining into the portal and living room. -Debar K.
