Autumn Activities Guide 2019

Mayor’s Message The weather might be cooling down but the number of events happening in and around the city are certainly heating up during autumn. Following on from the success of last year’s week-long celebrations as part of International Women’s Week, Council has once again sought to work with a number of organisations to provide a broad range of events from 3 March which aim to celebrate and inspire women. One of the highlights will be the unveiling of the city’s 2019 Diamonds of Devonport, which will be held in the paranaple convention centre on Thursday 7 March at 6 pm. To mark the beginning of the Ten Days on the Island arts festival hundreds of local performers and community groups will gather at the Bluff for mapali – DAWN GATHERING at 7 am on 8 March. The first light of the day will be celebrated with music, dance, and performance inspired by the surrounding landscape. The Bass Strait Maritime Centre has teamed up with one of the state’s leading geologists, Peter Manchester, to deliver an exciting program to complement their Exhibition, Flow: Natural History of the Bass Strait. This year Devonport will celebrate Harmony Day and our communities cultural diversity with a Street Festival event in Market Square, keep an eye out for author Mem Fox who is scheduled to return to our City on the same day. Don’t miss the annual youth week event, previously Reclaim the Lane 2019 will see this event move to Embrace the Place. I encourage you to take the opportunity to make the most of the season before the winter chills are upon us. 16 March - 19 May 2019 Monday - Friday 7.30am - 4.45pm Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays 7:30am - 2pm With Placing Things, Kelly Austin continues to question the connections between perception and expectation. The grouping of familiar and ambiguous ceramic objects shifts the generalised contemplation invited by still life works into a more forensic exploration of looking. And, as this work also asks, what are the ways in which broader concerns might be signalled through the composition of objects, space and light?
