Welcome Summer is a terrific time in Devonport with plenty of sunny days to make getting out and about enjoyable. It is also a great season to make your health a priority with lighter days and warmer weather making it easier to get the walking shoes on. The Devonport Summer in the City Guide contains all the information about programs and events being held by Council and our partners over the next three months. We’ve also highlighted some of our favourite parks, trails and reserves. There’s lots happening at the Devonport Regional Gallery and the Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre, as well as a number of outdoor events for children and families. Don’t miss our outdoor family movie event and kids gardening sessions. For the young at heart we have historical walks and digital photography workshops. I hope you enjoy Summer in the City! Get Out & About LOOK AT ROOKE: A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE The team from the Bass Strait Maritime Centre will lead a walk through the Mall, looking at buildings and highlighting businesses of yesteryear. Share your memories of Rooke Street to assist in compiling a definitive list of the occupiers of the shops over the years. Those who have stories to share or those who would like to learn more about the history of the area are invited to come along. GET HOOKED Come drop in a line with the team from Fishcare. They will navigate you through the fishing waters by providing assistance on recreational fishing. Get Out & About SAIL AWAY ON THE JULIE BURGESS Ahoy sailors! Board our historic ketch, the Julie Burgess for a sail up the Mersey River and into Bass Strait. Suitable for all ages, you’ll relive the classic days of sailing the high seas. When: Two-hour sailings are scheduled for Wednesdays and Sundays, subject to weather conditions. Get Out & About MERSEY BLUFF RESERVE Grab the family, a picnic, sun smart beach wear and head down to the Bluff on a sunny summer’s day. With barbeques, a playground, skate park, walking track, shaded picnic tables, public toilets & change rooms, as well as the Mersey Bluff Surf Live Saving Club and Drift Cafe, the Bluff is one of the best places to hang out in Devonport during summer. VICTORIA PARADE RIVER RAMBLE Enjoy the stroll along the Mersey River from the City to the Bluff. The Victoria Parade River parkland also features public toilets, fitness equipment, bbqs, car parks and a war memorial. Where: Victoria Parade, Devonport

Featuring the world’s largest collection of Tasmanian living woody plants, Southern Hemisphere conifers and plants from Northern Hemisphere forests, the Tasmanian Arboretum is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Platypus can be reliably seen most days in Founder’s Lake and the Arboretum is home to around 80 local bird species. Bring the kids along and learn more about nature as well as enjoying the many shades of summer in the garden. When: Gates open every day from 9am to sunset. Get Out & About REG HOPE PARK Reg Hope Park on the Eastern riverbank is the perfect spot to watch all the comings and goings of the Mersey River. Enjoy a picnic or BBQ or take a trip on the Julie Burgess (see the Bass Strait Maritime Centre for more details). Where: Tarleton Street, East Devonport

EASTERN FORESHORE WALK & RIDE Grab your bike or put on your walking shoes and hit the pavement. The East Devonport Cycle Way & Walking Track, between Wheeler Street and Tea Tree Lane is a beautiful foreshore nature walk which takes in both the Mersey River and Bass Strait. There’s plenty of parking options available off Wheeler Street, Melrose Street and Tea Tree Lane. This walk will introduce you to many interesting historical facts about Devonport. At low tide you can see the remains of the dredge G.Ward Cole that was wrecked at Shipwreck Beach on October 29, 1930 when stormy seas caused its mooring chains to break. Shipwreck Beach is a great place for viewing ships coming in and out of the Mersey River. Learn about the heritage of the area by checking out the interpretive historical markers at the Thomas Street end of the walk. Continuing on, the track follows the beach where you will have magnificent views of Bass Strait. This walk is approximately 2.8km and at a casual pace will take about 1 hour (one way). Get Out & About LAST BLAST @ THE BLUFF Celebrate the end of summer holidays with a range of fun-filled outdoor activities for all ages. Come down to the beach and try your hand at beach cricket, frisbee and other beach activities. Or if low key is more your idea of fun, come down and soak up the atmosphere, build a sand castle or comb the beach for a washed up treasure. Children 12 years and under must be supervised. Know Your Odds Skate, Scoot & BMX Competition Returning for its fourth year, the Know Your Odds Skate, Scooter & BMX competition series is back on the NW Coast! The first event of the series is set for Devonport’s Bluff skate park and will see competitors of all ages busting their best spins, flips and grinds as they vie for their share of the $1,000 worth of prizes on offer. This event is a great opportunity for riders to test their skills and also for the community to come along and be amazed by the skills of our youth. All competitors MUST wear helmets and those under 18yrs must have a registration form signed by their parent or guardian. Competition registration is open from 10am, the the competition kicking off at 11am. Local photographer Rachael Parker will guide you through all the tricks of the trade. Take the helm and captain a 1910’s steamer into the Mersey River or through the heads of Port Phillip Bay. Test your skills on the simulated experience and face some of the challeneges of Bass Strait sailing...without getting wet! Get Creative 40 YEARS OF COLLECTING: DCC PERMANENT COLLECTION The exhibition celebrates over 40 years of collecting for the City of Devonport. The exhibition illuminates the significance of such a collection and highlights key works donated or purchased over a forty year period. This exhibition also includes works from Christopher Pyett purchased by Jean Thomas’ The Little Gallery. Curated by Ellie Ray and Emily Kennel. MARISA MOLIN: FRAGMENTS OF KING Tasmanian artist Marisa Molin maps the coastline of islands by collecting textures and fragments found from the shoreline. These fragments and their secret narratives are brought into the studio and translated into wearable objects. These works are from the Fragments of King series, which is an outcome of an Artist Residency on King Island (2015)*. This exhibition aims to create a collective and visual dialogue about an island – as each island is unique. * Fragments of King was assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts. Books are selected based on the exhibitions displayed at the Gallery. The group provides an open, friendly and thoughtful atmosphere for people of all ages. DISCOVER HOME HILL Take a peak into the lives of two of Australia’s most distinguished politicians at Devonport’s only ‘house museum’, Home Hill. Built by them in 1916, this fascinating house was the family home of Joseph Lyons (Prime Minister 1932-39), Dame Enid Lyons (MHR 1943-51) and their 12 children. Home Hill remains largely as it was when Dame Enid last lived there, complete with its original floor coverings, wallpapers, furnishings and a rich collection of political and personal mementoes. MAKE YOUR MARK: DEATH Death is part of life. But it is not always easy to talk about. When words are not enough to express our feelings about death and loss, art can be a powerful voice. Get Creative FILM-MAKING 101 Calling all budding film-makers and those looking to enter in the Four 8 Film Festival next year (4–7 March 2016) – we have the workshop for you! Experienced film-maker Rose Schramm will help you master the essentials of film-making from idea development, shooting to edit and post production tips – all with no budget! Rose will also offer her time at the end of the workshop to assess any ideas, answer any questions and offer personalised suggestions and feedback on your film projects. With a history in Sociology and theatre stage management, Rose Schramm merged into film 12 years ago and for 7 years taught video and editing units at Tas TAFE. She is a freelance cinematographer/sound recordist/script supervisor/first AD/ producer and wardrobe designer, but her main loves are writing, editing and teaching film. Rose is a qualified youth worker and has worked with many community groups and organisations around Tasmania, teaching and making films. She is currently writing a comedy feature film set in Hobart, and editing the final cut of a feature documentary filmed between Tasmania and New Orleans. Get Active DEVONPORT WALKS Looking at getting outside for some gentle activity? Come join the Free Devonport Walks group. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Walking for just 30 minutes a day can boost both your physical and emotional wellbeing. When: 12.15-12.45pm every Tuesday & Thursday. SKYFIRE will offer a range of entertainment for the kids, live music to suit the whole family, plus food and drink stalls. You can create your very own lantern featuring your hopes and dreams for the year ahead and have it featured in the Lantern Dreams Garden.
