ear Devotion Yoga Community,

It is an honor to be writing the editorial for our first printed edition of the Urban Sanctuary Magazine! This publication is made even more meaningful as Devotion’s 12-year anniversary is upon us! While we acknowledge the growth and change that has occurred over the years, our commitment to remaining your “neighborhood yoga studio” has not wavered. Devotion is still a friendly, laid-back studio boasting an eclectic group of practitioners of all levels and backgrounds. Our philosophy has always been to welcome new faces and our classes celebrate the diversity of both our teachers and students. Devotion’s Core Values, which have evolved over the years, include community, mindful living, learning, and service.

In keeping with this spirit of celebration and transformation, I am thrilled to present you with this magazine! I hope this serves as a resource for you in providing inspiration, a space for reflection and goal setting, as well as planning your yoga practice for 2016 at Devotion Yoga! We have created a well-rounded and comprehensive programming calendar that offers something for everyone. Within these pages you will find great articles and a directory of workshops and events for both new students and experienced yogis, with topics ranging from yoga to healthful cooking, and mindful living to meditation and stress reduction. Learn more about upcoming teacher trainings and continuing education, and programs that will inspire self-discovery and creative expression. Our many inspirational offerings for expectant and new mothers integrate the principles of yoga with conscious living while providing a welcoming community. In addition to a full schedule of yoga classes and workshops, we also offer a complete menu of health and wellness services including massage, Reiki healing, acupuncture, and nutrition and life coaching. In essence, Devotion Yoga offers options for every aspect of wellness. We call our space, and this magazine, The Urban Sanctuary because the stresses of our metropolitan New York lifestyle can weigh on us both physically and mentally, and we have aspired to create a “sanctuary” where people can slow down, be nurtured, and feel at ease. We invite you to step into our spacious but cozy urban oasis to stretch out, breathe in, and relax. Devotion Yoga welcomes you hOMe! Over the years we have made many friends, watched as longtime clients have become new moms, graduated numerous classes of new yoga teachers, observed proud smiles after a student’s first handstand, looked on as close relationships form, and most importantly, witnessed our community come together during times of great adversity. For these gifts, all of us at Devotion thank you! Enjoy and See You On the Mat!

14 HAPPINESS

SECRETS TO

By Jeannine Morris Holistic Health Coach & Wellness Reporter

H

appiness is a choice. Have you ever

thought about it like that? The key to living a life full of joy and contentment starts simply with changing your perspective, but then of course, it needs to be nurtured. Here are 14 tips that’ll help you live happier: Be Miracle Minded Miracles occur everyday whether you recognize them or not, but you need to be open to seeing them in order to experience them. How do you think roses bloom season after season despite the frigid winter? If you recognize these types of miracles that are often overlooked, you’ll learn to appreciate all the universe has to offer. Change Your Thoughts Your thoughts control your feelings. In order to become a happier person, you need to think more positive thoughts. While it seems simple, it actually takes a lot of practice because you need to retrain your brain. A good example is the belief of not being enough – skinny enough, rich enough, smart enough – the list goes on. When you begin to tell yourself (and realize) that you are enough, you can begin to experience abundance. Emit Your Own Frequency We, human beings, are composed of energy as is everything around us. It’s important to understand that our energy (our soul) is living a human experience and can emit it’s own frequency. Too often we pick up the negative energy of others and can easily become absorbed by it. Pay attention to the vibe you give off and find a tribe that compliments it. Eat with Intention Food is medicine. As Americans, most of us grew up not paying attention to the food we consume,

- 12 -

devotionyoga.com

but that needs to change in order for you to feel your best. Each time you sit down to eat, look at your plate and make sure everything on it has nutritional value. Just another reason to skip the breadbasket. Food fuels the body and keeps our systems running properly, so just imagine what’s happening inside when we are full of sugar! Set Daily Intentions Each morning before I get out of bed, I meditate for 20 minutes and set an intention for the day. Sometimes it’s as simple as “Today is going to be a great day.” By starting your morning off on a positive note, with an intention, it’ll help you go through the rest of your day in a more positive manner. Treat Yourself Like You Treat Your Pet If you’re anything like me, you keep your pet (or child) on a pedestal. You wouldn’t think twice about making sure it only eats organic (only the best for your baby), gets plenty of affection and is simply spoiled to say the least. Take a look at the way you treat yourself. After all, you’re health and happiness is in your own hands. What are you eating? Are you making time for relationships, fitness and pampering? Keep A Gratitude Journal Recognizing and expressing gratitude are very powerful activities. Without gratitude, we tend to take things for granted. Before bed, try thinking of three things you’re grateful for that day. I’m old school and journaling in an actual notebook, so I like to write them down, but you can also keep a running list in the “Notes” section of your iPhone. Forgive, Forgive, Forgive Forgiveness is the ultimate secret to achieving peace and happiness. Whether you need to forgive yourself or someone else, it’s important to

recognize that until you can forgive, you’ll never be fully liberated and able to live life to it’s fullest. Volunteer Giving back out of kindness is one of the most rewarding things we can do on this earth. We’re conditioned to think of time as money, (and in many cases… yea, pay up!), but you have over 10,000 minutes in a week. Taking an hour out of your schedule to help those in need is a humbling and fulfilling experience. See Through Eyes of Love See the world through eyes of love as opposed to fear. Make the commitment to yourself to realign your thoughts with love. I was taught by Gabby Bernstein to allow your inner guide to help you reinterpret a fear through prayer. When practicing this, the voice within you starts to change and you’ll be able to see love. Meditate Meditation helps to relieve stress, allow the mind to explore deeper levels of thought and clear any unimportant thoughts, making you able to focus. Even if you sit for just five minutes repeating an intention or focusing on your breath each morning, you’re helping yourself. Release Your Ego Your ego is the loudest voice in your head and often isn’t authentic. Instead of living through the thoughts of your ego, take a step back andrecognize that it’s not always aligned with your intuition, which is your true self. When you learn how to let go of your ego, you realize life

is a lot simpler than you thought, because living through love - your gut feelings, takes off a lot of pressure. Unplug and Tune In Have you ever found yourself comparing your life to those on social media? Maybe that super flexible yogi who gets to travel the world for free because of her following? Or how about to that mom of three kids with her coveted corporate job? How does she have it all? Remember that Instagram is a well-edited version of what’s really happening at home. Stop spending so much time on social media platforms. Unplug and go create a life of your own. Let Go of the Future Let go of the future, it doesn’t exist! We’re so caught up in our plans and goals that this is hard for people to comprehend, but once you understand, you allow yourself to fully live in the moment and appreciate the little things that make up this precious life. Jeannine Morris is a Health Coach at Devotion Yoga who studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. 3 Steps to Finding Calm in a Hoboken Minute In our hectic world of email, long work hours, ever-increasing speed of communication and media, stress is high. If you feel like you don’t have enough time to practice meditation, just follow these 3 quick tips as many times as you can during your day to become centered, calm, and relaxed.

You can do this whenever you can find one minute! 1) Focus your attention on your breath and take several big deep belly breaths, breathing in and out through the nose. 2) Let your awareness travel to the muscles around your eyes, eyebrows, jaw, throat and neck. Consciously relax these areas. Closing your eyes may help to bring you into this moment. 3) Bring your awareness into this moment and notice, without judgment, all that is present – sounds, sensations, thoughts, feelings. Keep your awareness in the “now” and say silently to yourself “In this moment all is okay”, “In this moment I am calm”, “In this moment I let go of all that doesn’t serve me”.

Restore Balance: Restorative Yoga and Acupuncture with Patrick Franco Saturday, June 18th 2:00 - 4:00pm $75 per person The ‘Restore Balance’ workshop will offer an opportunity to foster blissful moments of rejuvenation, so often neglected in our modern lifestyles. In addition to the practice of yoga poses, the traditional Indian Ayurvedic masters also practiced a form of acupuncture to stimulate the proper flow of prana throughout the body. According to BKS Iyengar: “Prana is the energy permeating the universe at all levels. It is physical, mental, intellectual, spiritual, and cosmic energy”. When there is congestion of the energy channels through which vital force flows, this stagnant energy affects the functioning of the physical as well as the mental body. This workshop offers you the opportunity to bring balance back to your nervous system and subtle body. We will work to balance and treat the subtle energies through the combined practices of restorative yoga and acupuncture. This 2-hour workshop is designed to help you re-establish a connection with the natural rhythms of nature and sooth your nervous system. During the workshop, we will work through various restorative poses to ease your body and take you through traditional yogic meditations to ease your mind. While you relax in your restorative postures, an acupuncture treatment will be provided to maximize the benefit of the restorative postures and induce a therapeutic effect throughout the major organs and structures of the body. Open to all levels.

Yogi Essential Oil Playshop with Ann Gilmartin and Wendy Bright-Fallon Saturday, July 24th 2:00 - 4:00pm $40 per person

Time for a Digital Detox By Kate Lombardo I

n April of 2014 there was this great video

circulating the internet entitled Look Up, which highlighted the opportunities and connections we miss by spending so much time looking down at our digital devices. The video has always stuck with me because it’s message is so true. On a walk around Hoboken or a trip on the PATH, almost every person is distracted by using some type of digital device. Despite passing hundreds of people on a trip into the city it is actually possible to not interact with a single one of them. At times, this realization leaves me with an overwhelming sense of loneliness. The incredible ability technology has given us to connect with a person across the world in a single second has also left us unable to make a connection with the person sitting right next to us. I recently went on a whitewater rafting trip with my family to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. None of us took our phones on the trip for fear of losing them down the river. We got to enjoy almost six hours together without any digital connection to the world around us. It was honestly one of the best days I’ve had in a very long time. I spent the day living completely in the moment, focused on the conversations with my family and admiring the nature surrounding us. We spent the day laughing and truly enjoying each other’s company without having to stop and take a selfie to put up on Instagram later on. Living the message from Look Up that day further solidified my growing belief that giving ourselves a digital detox from time to time can completely rejuvenate our connection to the world around us. Later that week I called my cell phone provider to cancel my service and deactivated all of my social media accounts. Kidding. Removing ourselves from all forms of digital

- 26 -

devotionyoga.com

connection is not realistic. However, there are some simple things you can do to help kickstart a digital detox. 1. Use an alarm clock. I’ve been using the alarm clock on my phone for years. The problem is when I go to turn my alarm off in the morning I’m tempted to check my email or social media accounts. Switching to a traditional alarm clock allows you to leave the phone away and enjoy your morning. Those emails will still be there after your first cup of coffee. 2. Once per week, travel to work in silence. I love singing along to the radio and letting my inner Beyonce shine through. But, being in the car or on a train can also be the perfect opportunity to take some time alone with your thoughts. Turn the music off every now and then and check in with yourself. It’s probably one of the few times that nobody else is around to interrupt you. 3. Detox in numbers. After watching Look Up my coworkers and I made the decision to put down our devices during lunch. It’s not always realistic and there are definitely times that one of us needs to make a phone call or check an email but overall we’ve been pretty good at holding each other accountable for “looking up”. Lunch is full of a lot more laughs when we take the time to enjoy each other’s company. 4. Go for a tech-free walk. Meet a friend, take out the dog, or go for a solo stroll but leave the phone or iPod at home. There are so many unique and beautiful sights to see in all types of neighborhoods. Get outside and look around. Taking a half hour walk three nights a week without technology will not only help you clear

your mind, but will add in some exercise as well. 5. Leave your phone in the car when you go out to dinner. Catching up with friends or enjoying a date night is hard to do when one or all parties involved are too busy answering text messages. Give yourself permission to devote your full attention to the people you’re with. Your night is bound to be more enjoyable if everyone is completely invested in each other’s stories. If you’re afraid someone may really need to get in touch with you, give them the phone number of the restaurant and let the hostess know. They’ll find you in case of an emergency.

6. Read a real book before bed. Research shows that using technology right before bed can negatively affect our sleeping patterns. Turn off the TV and put down the tablet by adding reading into your nightly routine. Picking up a paperback provides a way to unwind without the glaring lights of technology keeping your brain awake. Each day waking up to the possibility of designing and living a life that you truly dream about? Every day we have the choice to begin again. We have the ability to choose how we are going to live this day and the next, and every other day after that. The problem is, we forget that we have a choice. Or for many of us, we get paralyzed at the thought of making a choice and then spend too much time and energy worrying about what others will think. Countless people wake up each day to spend 8+ hours at a job that they hate. There are people who stay in relationships that are not serving them anymore and those that continue to do the same things over and over, just to complain more and more. Each day the choices we make create our journey.

OPTIMISM:

The One Quality That Will Change Your Life

By Liza Bertini

I

n today’s world, there are overwhelming,

complicated problems that result in fear -depression, stress, anxiety, violence and war. This is happening on all levels, locally and globally. In the midst of this, it is not difficult to fall into a place of despair and despondence. When many people already live with stress, anxiety, and fear, the world’s complicated landscape adds to our outlook of doom and gloom. And on a more personal level, when things in life don’t go the way we want we become resentful, frustrated or feel cheated. In all of these scenarios, suffering exists. Yoga asks us to look inside to find more patience, presence, understanding, consciousness, calmness and kindness, all of which will ripple out and change our relationships with others and our perspective on the world around us. In Sonja Lyubomirsky’s The How of Happiness, she concludes that fifty percent of a human being’s happiness level is genetically determined, ten percent is affected by life circumstances and situation, and the remaining forty percent of happiness is subject to self-control and attitude. While some of us may focus on changing our circumstances, successfully doing so would only increase or decrease our true level of happiness by ten percent. What we should focus on is the forty percent of happiness that is under our control! One way to change your perspective of, or reaction to, your circumstances is by finding the lesson and seeing the good within each situation. Tal Ben-Shahar, PhD and expert in positive psychology, says, “things do not necessarily happen for the best, but I can choose to make the best of things that happen.” When we are faced with hardship, we have a choice. We can treat it as a purely negative experience or we

- 36 -

devotionyoga.com

can actively seek to identify and understand the lesson within it. We don’t have to be happy about every situation, but when a challenging one presents itself, we can use it as an opportunity for growth and development. To help turn things around, make a habit of finding something positive in every situation. We have all seen that even when traumatic things happen, community, love, support, and kindness surface from good people everywhere. Cultivate an attitude of optimism. If you have a perspective that “life is hard,” “bad things always happen,” “nothing ever works out for me,” ask yourself how that is serving you. Remember, the law of attraction says “like attracts like” so if you are constantly thinking negatively, that is exactly what you are attracting! Bert and John Jacobs, founders of the Life is Good company, say that optimism is not just irrational cheerfulness or blind positivity, it is a powerful strategy for accomplishing goals and living a fulfilling life. They say “that acknowledging obstacles and opportunities – but focusing on the opportunities – optimism enables us to explore the world with open arms and an eye toward solutions, progress, and growth. It also makes life a hell of a lot more fun.” The choice to focus on the good opens our minds to infinite possibilities. Over the past 20 years, scientific research has validated the benefits of optimism and has found a strong link between optimism and increased physical and mental health, greater resilience in the face of stress and adversity, and a higher quality of life. MRI studies conducted by Tali Sharot and colleagues at New York University showed that a “glass half-full optimism may not only make us happier, but also give us drive to achieve our goals in life. In turn, by simply

focusing on negative predictions of the future will surely impair our lives.” Yoga philosophy honors the good and bad, light and dark within us, and out in the world. We would never know how amazing the light can be if we didn’t acknowledge the dark. However, it is our responsibility to expand the light and continue to cultivate good in ourselves and let that ripple out into the world. By filling ourselves with good thoughts and positivity, we will affect those around us. As overwhelming as it may seem, choosing optimism will change your life. Here are a few ideas to increase your optimism: 1. Acknowledge Your Blessings Each day, think of three things for which you are grateful. Cultivating gratitude reminds us of the good things in our life and how much we already have. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, suggests writing down your happiest moment of each day, no matter how small. Keep this in a journal and notice what brings joy to your life. 2. True Compliments Once a day, give someone a genuine compliment. When you compliment people, it makes them feel good. Even better, it makes you

feel good. Also become aware of compliments that others give you and how it makes you feel. Can you give and receive kinds words openly and thoughtfully? 3. Seek out GOOD News Instead of only focusing on the news and media that is reporting the bad things that are happening in the world, seek out, read, and watch news stories that spread goodness, cheer, community, love, and kindness. They are out there! The best place to find them is in social media or on the Internet. Just Google “good news stories” and you will get a whole list of positive stories to uplift your spirits! 4. Change Your Choice of Words. John Jacobs says, instead of saying or thinking, “have to” change it to “get to.” For example, instead of saying “I have to pay my bills,” say “I get to pay my bills because I have a roof over my head.” Just this small change in your words and thought will change your focus to the positive from the ongoing thought of all we believe we have to do.

Silent Mini-Retreat for Women with Liza Bertini & Sarah Bond 2016 Dates: - Sunday, January 3rd - Sunday, May 22nd 2:00 – 7:00pm $99 per person (with 45 minute massage) – limited to 8 women $45 per person (no massage) – limited to 10 women Give yourself the gift of slowing down and rejuvenating in the power of silence. Silence and love are the roots of our true nature but in today’s overwhelming culture filled with stimuli and challenges, we move further and further from being in-tune with our true inner knowing. When we embrace silence and rest, our conditioning naturally dissolves and we see that when we rest in silence we can move into the challenges of everyday life with a sense of ease and well-being. Realign with who you are in silent space. Through periods of silence, guided and silent meditations, relaxation, and being in a community of like-minded women, we learn that deep self-discovery arises out of a place of presence and self-love. It is important for our overall well-being to nurture ourselves, without guilt. Bask in Devotion’s beautiful Urban Sanctuary as we create a space of quietude to explore the mind, body and spirit. Our experience will include: • A 45-minute healing massage (if you chose one) • Calm space filled with compassion and devotion • Silence – time to unplug from electronics, phones, etc. • Inspiring “sacred stations” with readings, activities, and contemplations to help you reconnect to your true self and to discover how the power of silence can help you gain clarity and focus. YOGA & MEDITATION

Integration in yoga involves meditation, wisdom, action, and devotion. This very practical seminar helps students to understand yoga teachings for themselves by gaining an understanding of the essential elements of yoga through the Bhagavad-gita, yoga’s most essential text. Rather than go through the Gita chronologically, we will focus on raja, jnana, karma and bhakti yogas in a logical progression, drawing from verses throughout the text. This course is ideal for yoga teachers as well as for those who want to deepen their understanding of yoga and the Bhagavad-gita. Students will gain a clear idea of how classical yoga thought and practices can be applied in a modern, urban environment in order to transform one’s yoga practice.

Yin Yoga Immersion with Eileen O’Sullivan

A mindful approach to yoga practice, and a perfect complement to the dynamic, more active (yang) styles of yoga. Passive, meditative postures are held from 3 to 5 minutes, targeting the connective tissue that supports the joints, primarily of the hips, sacrum, and spine. This is a quiet, introspective practice and a potent way to investigate the mind/ body link. It is sometimes referred to as restorative with an edge, and in this session you’ll find out why. We’ll review the basics of meridian theory and Yin yoga, and will have the time to drop in and explore the sometimes subtle, sometimes profound, benefits of this still practice. A perfect opportunity for those who may be curious about Yin, or for those who would welcome immersing themselves in a long in-depth Yin session.

Open yourself to a practice of “being” rather than “doing”! No Yoga experience is necessary.

Exploring the 5 Layers of Our Being with Brendan Gibbons

There is more to our being than just our physical body and mind. Even modern science has proven that we have an energetic vibration. These 3 layers make up the outermost layers of our being: body, energy and mind. The yogis describe our deepest 2 layers as the intellectual body and the blissful body or Spirit. To achieve “wholeness” we need all of these layers to align and support one another. In this workshop, we will explore the kosas, or sheaths of the body, through asana, meditation and pranayama. We will explore how each of the layers affect one another and how to support our bodies, our energy, our minds, and our intellects so that we can align with our deepest Spirit and truest nature. Open to all levels.

Q A Q A

How long have you been coming to Devotion Yoga?

Q A

Three and a-half years ago I started at the old uptown studio in May of 2012

How has yoga changed your life? I don’t necessarily think that yoga itself has changed my life (yet!?) but it has dramatically helped my life changes. I was divorced in 2014 and the yoga studio became a sanctuary of sorts; a place where I could feel physically strong, mentally focused, and spiritually nourished. I’ve loved the diversity of teaching styles since Day 1 and I continue to marvel at the strong sense of community in each class; both with the teachers and fellow students. I have a fairly independent job and my family lives out of state so I actually see the teachers and students at Devotion more often than I see my own colleagues and family! I’ve also met some of my best friends through yoga, so it has been nothing but a positive influence in my life!

Favorite Pose? Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)

Q A

Q A

How would you describe Devotion Yoga to a friend? Devotion is a beautiful place with beautiful teachers who will teach you beautiful poses and encourage you to take deep, beautiful breaths. They will sometimes play beautiful music, tell a beautiful story or read a beautiful quote to start or end the class. They will guide you beautifully through unique patterns of poses during which your worries and troubles beautifully float out of you. And after class you walk home, noticing how beautiful your life is. And the very best part is you get to return to the same beautiful place with the same beautiful people the very next day.

Favorite Class? I currently try to frequent any and all classes offered by Tam Terry, Brendan Gibbons, Patrick Franco and Kim Larkin! My work schedule doesn’t permit me to attend morning or afternoon classes during the week so I’m usually at the 8pm classes.

Q A

How long have you been coming to Devotion Yoga?

Q A

I’ve been coming to Devotion Yoga for a little over 4 years.

How has yoga changed your life? I was first introduced to yoga about 6 years ago. Life was very challenging then and I needed something to ground myself and find peace within. I also wanted to get stronger and become more flexible, and make friends in the process. Little did I know that the practice would become such an important part of my life? I started to take more classes and I began to notice how some of the most serious students looked incredibly fresh during the early weekend classes. I wanted to be part of that community so my priorities had to change. Yoga is a path, a beautiful journey. Recently, one of my favorite teachers said: “you can reinvent yourself every instant. It can start now.” Every time I come to my mat, the world briefly disappears, and I am left with my true essence. Wherever you are, it’s ok. Every day I ask myself, what else can I do to live a more harmonious, authentic life - a life worth living? Yoga has contributed to this personal paradigm shift.

Q A

Favorite Pose?

Q A Q A

How would you describe Devotion Yoga to a friend?

Downward dog. One time I heard a teacher say, if you happen to be traveling and all the yoga you can do is one pose, Downward dog would be the one to do. There are many great elements to this pose.

A great, friendly space to help you flourish, grow as a person, and make friends.

Favorite Class? Oh, this is a tough one. There are many classes I like for different reasons, many of these classes complement each other, but for the sake of answering the question, I really enjoy Patrick Franco’s classes.

WHAT SHOULD I

oes low fat mean healthy?

EAT?

Does “low sodium” mean food will taste bland? Is “natural flavor” better than “artificial flavor”? No wonder we find it difficult to stay on the path of healthy eating with so many confusing messages out there. If you feel baffled, you’re not alone. The food industry pays big salaries to marketing firms to target the gray area of legal statements regarding our food and food labels. Their main goal is to sell products and make a profit, regardless of our health needs. So, what to do? The best solution is to read your food labels. Not just the fat and calorie chart, but the ingredients and serving size, too. If your food is made with ingredients you can’t pronounce, or if you are unsure of what they are, consider whether you really want to put those ingredients into your body. Because sugar is so highly addictive, the food industry has discovered that by adding artificial sweeteners or highly processed sugar (like high fructose corn syrup) to our foods, consumers will keep coming back for more. We have also become accustomed to high levels of sodium, found in all processed and canned foods, making foods with low or no sodium taste comparatively bland. Feeling mislead? Then keep it simple. One good solution for avoiding unhealthy additives is to stick to what you know. Fresh fruits and vegetables in their natural state are packed with healthy vitamins and minerals. Raw nuts, seeds, and healthy oils, like olive oil, deliver healthy fats. Consuming foods in their natural state will allow your body to process these foods easily - your body will know what to do! Once we are aware of the marketing tactics of the food industry, it’s easier to spot their deception. Research your favorite foods,

restaurants, and baked goods to find out what you’re really eating. Cook more and become a food label fanatic. You’ll feel healthier and look better in no time!
