Bare Roots in this catalog Bare Root

We offer a wide range of bare root perennials listed as size #1 divisions. Most of these plants are field grown for one year to make them the perfect size for producing a 1 gallon container. By growing them in the field we have the opportunity to check to make sure true-to-name and disease -free. Most of these plants are grown in the Netherlands either by our own nursery or by carefully selected contract growers. This gives us better control of inventories and quality throughout the year. Since we are the grower and not just a broker, once your order is confirmed, we rarely have problems delivering what is ordered.

Smaller bare root:

Size I

Size II

We also offer a few of the best selling perennials in a smaller size, at a lower price: ideal for smaller containers and quick sales. This size can also be planted in late spring or early summer for fall sales or extra large plants for the following spring. Please ask your sales representative or visit our website for details about this new opportunity to increase your margins.

Advantages of bare root plants * Can make a bigger plant in a shorter time, compared to many liners * Are easily stored dormant, so many delivery schedules are possible * The grower is certain the cold requirement has been met (since a dormant, cold-stored crown is being purchased) * Many species can tolerate lower temperatures after planting than many greenhouse-produced plugs or liners (can be very cost effective) * Availability of a wide assortment of the major cultivars and varieties * Can be easily planted with planting machines * Available in a range of sizes or grades * Available both as imported (Dutch) items or domestically (North American) items The long cool summer days in the Netherlands are ideal for producing many perennials as bare roots. The agronomic characteristics of the soils and the understanding of digging, handling and storing dormant products are well-understood in Holland. Bare root perennials have become a major economic component for many Dutch export companies.

Growing information Perennials

Trial Gardens

We are growing many different kinds of perennials in our nursery including a wide variety of Peonies, Hostas and Hemerocallis. Right now we are growing more than 200 varieties of perennials and we are always looking for proven new and better items to add to our nursery and your perennial mix. Because we are growers, we do understand the needs that other growers and business people like you come across each year. We can assist with technical support and other information as needed.

Even though we have selected the best growers, we do take samples from all shipments we receive and plant these plants in our trial garden next to our office. This way we can make sure these plants are true to name and top quality. We can also keep an eye on the growing habits. Over the years we have been able to sort out which growers or growing locations supply us with the best possible quality and sizes. With the feedback we get from the trial gardens, we can give more information about the plants customers receive from us.

Growers As you can see when you look at our Perennial listing, we carry more than the 200 varieties we grow ourselves. Plants we don’t grow at our own nursery are coming from other Dutch growers we are very familiar with. By working closely with those growers, we are ensured they are growing the same way we do, which results in a similar crop. Sizes might vary a little since soil conditions may be different. Our fields are in areas with very sandy soil while some of the growers we deal with have their nurseries in areas with a heavier soil which contain more clay. 8

ABOUT THE CATALOG

Size 1 plants The plants in this catalog are # 1 size plants and packed per 25, unless otherwise stated. Please check the order form for minimum order quantities and shipping instructions. Confirmations will be sent to you as soon as we have processed your order.

Patent Protected Plants The term PPAF written after a plant name, stands for ‘Plant Patent Applied For’. PP 00.000 and EU0000 refers to patent numbers for the USA and European Breeders rights. Propagation of all patented and patent-pending plants is strictly prohibited. Astilbe ‘Milk and Honey’ PPAF EU20007

Deer Resistant Perennials

If the herd is large enough and food is scarce, deer have been known to eat anything. Deer tend to have regional tastes, so plants not eaten in one area might be eaten elsewhere. Plants listed as ‘Deer Resistant’ in this catalog come from research that was published by several cooperative extension offices. These plants are less attractive to deer.
