Singapore rules, lah I have recently come to the conclusion that Singapore is my favourite place ever to live. Obviously, I don’t take statements like that lightly - it was all based on total scientific calculations. Or lists. Definitely one of the two. Here is an excerpt of the “Things I Love” list:

GET ANNA’S LOOK WITH THE BODY SHOP!

1) You’re allowed to have two spoonfuls of condensed milk before 9am via your kopi. 2) K-Beauty. Yes, two-toned lips and wispy fringes, YES. 3) It’s the golden trifecta of being safe, warm and clean; the combination of which allows me to saunter home at 10pm with my headphones in and a very smug look on my face. 4) The Merlion. Yes, obviously very touristy, but whatever – when I see it spitting water out of its majestic mouth, I want to clap with delight. Of course, being a (probably) legitimate calculation, I had to weigh the good list with the “Not Quite Sure About Yet” list that included things like: 1) Hawker food. I’m not familiar with the names yet, so I just point at the pretty laminated pictures and hope for the best. Sometimes, the dishes are delicious, other times… well, let’s just say I am surprised by how similar a capsicum and a chilli can look. 2) The queuing. I remain convinced that at some point, I’m going to get duped by someone who has paid their family to queue for a crap bar, or a 20-cents off coupon. The one thing that really pushed Singapore ahead on the tally though was Singlish. It’s like the unicorn of languages, and really shows how diverse the Singaporean culture is. I nailed “can” straight away, but am now working my way through the wider local vernacular. When I see them written down, I take a guess as to what they might be. Here are some of my early thoughts: Atas – Possibly the name of an indie band? “And, now, make some noise for... Atas!” Orh – Kinda sounds like the sound you make when you’re being punched in the stomach? But now I’m like, “Aiyo, this bar is so atas!” I feel incredibly lucky to get to live in such a melting pot – and if I can get the language down pat, surely hawker food isn’t too far off, right?

Go for Gold #3

Move aside laptops and tablets, the era of the convertible notebook is here. They look just like normal laptops, but flip the screen back and they transform into a tablet (how cool is that?). The sexiest standout is the revamped ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360. Available in a gorgeous gold hue, it has an ultra-slim and lightweight design and can handle professional apps like Photoshop without breaking a sweat — perfect for the style-conscious girl on the go.

If you think drawing your eyebrows or applying eyeshadow is boring, here’s an idea: jazz your peepers up with a glittery line underneath your brows. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to this new and unexplored look — highlight your arches with any colour liner you like or go a little wild like the models on Holly Fulton’s latest runway. What better way to let your imagination run wild?

#5 FANCY A DOME?

Ooey, gooey, flowing desserts are all the rage now, but you haven’t tried the best of them all till you’ve had a chocolate dome dessert. Hot chocolate sauce is poured all over a chocolate sphere, which melts instantly to reveal a delightful core of cakes, ice cream and other sweet treats. Chocolate domes are available in Singapore at Opus Bar & Grill and Henri Charpentier, but you can also make it yourself by following these steps: 1 Melt some chocolate into a bowl and dip an inflated balloon into the melted chocolate. 2 Leave the chocolate-covered balloon in the fridge to set. 3 Once the chocolate has set, pop the balloon to retrieve your chocolate dome. 4 Stack sweet treats as desired and cover with chocolate dome. Pour hot chocolate sauce over it and voila, your very own chocolate dome!

#6 All Flared Up It seems the reign of skinny jeans has ended, giving way to a new era dominated by flare jeans. It’s not hard to see why — this new denim trend is equal parts comfortable, versatile and stylish. Rock a polished look by pairing it with structured outerwear and classic flats, or throw on a basic top for a casual look.

Manicurists all over the world are taking shiny to a new level with chrome nails. These silvery tips reflect more light than usual polishes, and almost make you feel like you’re looking into a mirror. Try creating this stunning look yourself by rubbing highly pigmented powder all over your nails on top of a black gel base.

THINK PINK #10 Nothing says you are a no-nonsense power woman like a suit does, and we’re digging these pink ones that add a touch of femininity to your entire look. Go pastel for a more delicate vibe or choose hot pink to stand out in the crowd. The trick to pulling this look off is to wear it confidently — dare to be different!

How did you guys meet and decide to form a brand together? After graduating from Optometry School together, we realised glasses were monopolised by large companies. Instead of accepting it as the norm, we sought to take control of all aspects of the business from design to production and customer service. What sets you apart from other eyewear brands? We aim to ensure that at every single touchpoint, the customer should feel inspired by our brand philosophy and the quality of our eyewear. Most local brands in Singapore find it hard to become successful, what's your secret? We focus on branding more than anything else. We make sure our customers know the message we want to tell, which is: "Everyone can look good with glasses." What makes a great pair of glasses? Functionality and comfort are key, as well as fashion-forward pieces that are on trend but based on a minimalist aesthetic. Do you each have a favourite pair of glasses? Yes! Right now our favorites are Brody (Eddie) and Jaxson (Jerial) in Crystal. What's one pair of sunglasses/ glasses that every one should own? Definitely a pair of tinted glasses from the Lucid Collection. They offer a unique blend of contemporary minimalism with a retro '90s vibe.

Take Full Cover We love K-Beauty’s dewy skin but the truth is, most of us aren’t born with a flawless complexion. Thankfully, these foundations offer lots of coverage, which makes them ideal for concealing all your flaws.

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation, $62, is waterproof and oilabsorbing, offering coverage that lasts all night. It leaves a matte finish that never looks overdone.

This is a bold reinvention of the iconic fragrance many of us are familiar with. It’s still perfectly in keeping with the family of floralabstract-aldehydic fragrances of N°5 since 1921 but what’s different is a heightened intensity of citrus mandarin and orange to accompany the aldehydes to evoke freshness and lightness. But before you think this is yet another fruity fragrance, a mixture of floral notes that include rose, jasmine and ylang ylang rises up. There are also musky echoes of vetiver and cedar to round things up. While this may sound like too complex a formula, it’s in reality a surprisingly fresh and modern scent that any woman will enjoy. And like its namesake (“l’eau” means “the water” in French), this goes with any occasion.

THE WAY TO A PERFECT FLATLAY Clio Kill Cover Stamping Foundation, $39.90, is hydrating and sun-protecting, leaving a soft and radiant finish.

When you have it (especially with a new classic like N° 5 L’Eau), flaunt it.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Color Correcting Full Coverage Cream + Anti-Aging Hydrating Serum SPF 50+ in Medium, $62, covers everything and will not crease or crack. On top of that, Go to pa ge it leaves a 17 healthy glow.

ALL GROWN UP

ETUDE HOUSE is known for its playful cosmetics and is synonymous with all things girly and fun, but as we found out, it’s suitable for both the young and the young at heart! Sophie Hong reports from Seoul.

Wh e!

Trust ETUDE HOUSE to throw a party worthy of a princess. Held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, the one-day Life Is Sweet Festival consisted of various experience zones plus the Pink Play Concert. The face of ETUDE HOUSE, Krystal Jung, also made an appearance to introduce the brand’s new slogan: “Life Is Sweet”. Indeed!

New on the shelves PLAY 101 BLENDING PENCIL You’ve heard of the Play 101 Pencil and the Play 101 Stick – now meet the newest kid on the block, the Play 101 Blending Pencil. Here are three reasons why we’re adding this nifty, multi-functional product to our arsenal of beauty products. It can be used on your lips, lids and cheeks That’s, like, three cosmetics in one. Talk about value for money.

Everyone’s pretty in pink!

ETUDE HOUSE makeup artist Dave Kim showcasing the latest in Korean makeup trends. Head over to the next page for a step-by-step guide!

Unveiling the new slogan for ETUDE HOUSE – “Life Is Sweet”.

Pictured here: I.O.I, a girl group that’s the new face of ETUDE HOUSE Colourful Scent eau de perfume. Not pictured here: hordes of adoring male fans screaming out for their faves.

The colour seriously lasts We were pleasantly surprised by the resilience of the product when we tried it out in Singapore’s heat and humidity. There were no creases or smudges even when we were out for the entire day, thanks to the silicone resin in the formula that forms a protective film over the colour so it doesn’t slip and slide. It even absorbs sebum and oil from your skin! Want to know why the product blends so easily? That’s because it contains multi-porous round powder, which is responsible for the pencil’s silky texture. It also helps to absorb sebum and oil, thus keeping your skin matte. ETUDE HOUSE Play 101 Blending Pencil is available in stores in September.

IF LIPS COULD TALK…

Simon D bringing the house down!

Lipstick hoarders, here’s something to add to your collection: the ETUDE HOUSE Dear My Blooming Lips-Talk: Chiffon range. Don’t be fooled by the lightweight texture of this lipstick, it has an amazing colour payoff and combines the lasting power of a matte lipstick with the smooth finish of a cream lipstick. Take it from someone who suffers from dry, chapped lips – these babies won’t flake, and I didn’t even need to touch up much after eating. ETUDE HOUSE Dear My Blooming Lips-Talk: Chiffon, $17.90

It’s not every day that you get to pick the genius mind of a makeup maven. We talked to ETUDE HOUSE makeup artist Dave Kim and learnt all that we can about makeup that’s tailored for the modern urbanite. Putting on makeup can be quite timeconsuming. Any tips on how to get our morning routine done faster? Multi-functional products are very useful for getting your makeup done quickly when you’re in a rush. Take, for example, the air cushions from ETUDE HOUSE. They contain sunscreen, makeup base, and foundation, which reduces several makeup steps into one. There are also products that can be used for the cheeks, lids, and lips, which can be helpful in completing a full, colourful makeup look. Can you teach us some ways we can use the multi-tasking products from ETUDE HOUSE? I would like to introduce the Play 101 Stick. It can be used in many ways – as a foundation,

highlighter, shading colour, and blusher. You can use it as it is, or mix it with different colours for different makeup looks. The multi-colour sticks in the Play 101 line can be used on your eyes and lips as well. Here’s a tip: mix the foundation stick and the peach colour stick together to conceal dark eye circles. Singapore’s weather is very hot and humid. Any tips on how we can prevent our makeup from smudging? For base makeup, use oil-free products. Apply your base by tapping the products on with a sponge so that it will stick onto your skin naturally. For your eye makeup, apply primer first before putting on eye shadow so that it’ll last longer. Use waterproof eyeliner and mascara, and remember to curl your lashes first!

Seoul Pretty The biggest beauty look in Korea right now? Glowing skin, subtle ombré eyes, and bright gradient lips. Dave Kim demonstrates.

1. Apply foundation using a brush, since it gives you a smoother finish. If you’re using the Play 101 Foundation Stick, use the Play 101 Stick Brush! 2. Sweep highlighter onto your forehead, chin, nose, and cheekbones to create a strobing effect. You can use the highlighting side from the Play 101 Stick Contour Duo for this. 3. Blend away for a seamless, dewy finish.

CHEEKS

1. Draw a spiral on the apple of your cheeks using a pink colour from the Play 101 Blending Pencil range. For this demonstration, Dave is using shade number 18. 2. Fill in the gaps in the spiral with highlighter. 3. Blend until the colours are evenly mixed. Your blush should now have a glowy, translucent finish!

The Calvin Klein CK One campaigns of the mid-’90s were some of the most striking and boundary-pushing of the last couple of decades, and have rightfully earned a place in style history. Shot in black-and-white, they featured a fresh-faced Kate Moss and a clique of nonchalantly cool models in various states of shirtlessness. Just like the advertisements themselves, the unisex scent exuded a raw, sexy and effortlessly cool vibe, and was so popular it spawned a series of spin-offs including the seasonal CK One Summer and the recent CK Two. More than two decades after the launch of the scent that started it all, Calvin Klein has launched CK One Gold. Featuring top notes of fig, bergamot and sage that rest on a base of vetiver, gaiac wood and patchouli, CK One Gold captures the golden allure of youth, and is the fragrance equivalent of the ’90s fashion staple that’s also making a comeback, the slip dress – understated, yet undeniably sexy. To match the shimmering radiance of this scent, the design of CK One Gold shares the same silhouette as the original, but with luxurious gold drips. We predict the stunning bottles will be making their way onto Instagram feeds near you very soon…

Do I need a separate moisturiser for day and night? Ong Sock Chin, 25

It’s better to use separate products as day creams support and protect your skin from environmental aggressors while night creams repair the skin while you sleep. Besides having different purposes, the textures are also different – day creams are more lightweight. www.CLEO.com.sg

The Comeback Kid Is less really more when it comes to skincare? CLEO Stylist/Writer Cheryl Chan jets off to Hong Kong to find out about all things FANCL. Hands up all those who suffer from sensitive skin. While sometimes it’s a condition bestowed upon us due to poor genetics and harsh weather conditions, did you know that using products with additives and parabens can cause it too? Organic skincare products typically don’t contain such skin irritants, and one brand known for using organic ingredients is FANCL. Developed in the ’70s by founder Mr Kenji Ikemori after Japanese women developed allergic reactions towards skincare products with harmful preservatives, the brand is now back FANCL can be on our shores, found at Isetan saving us from Scotts, 350 Orchard Road, our skincare woes Shaw House. one product at a time.

Yes, that is Chilam Cheung in th smiling ri e flesh ght into our cam era!!

One look at brand ambassador Chilam Cheung’s baby smooth skin, and you need no further proof that FANCL really works wonders. We catch up with the actor/singer on his favourite products! What is your skincare routine like? I have two very important factors in my routine. One is the Mild Cleansing Oil because as an artiste, I have to be in makeup very often and I need to be able to remove my makeup completely. Next is the Tense Up collagen drink. I take it every day after meals. As a brand ambassador and user, what products would you recommend a new user? Tense Up collagen drink, because it tastes really good, it’s like a dessert! Sometimes, I would even take it twice in a day, after lunch and dinner! What skincare products do you usually bring when you travel? I recently went to Italy and was sun tanning a lot there. To keep my skin hydrated, I used the moisturising mask almost every day and it kept my skin in really good condition. What’s your secret for keeping your skin in tip-top condition? Besides the Mild Cleansing Oil and the Tense Up collagen drink, masks are also very important to me. I use the Ageing Care Masks and the Moisturizing Masks very often. As an artiste having good skin is crucial, what do you do if your skin breaks out before a shoot? I would use the masks to help prep my skin as well as a great makeup artist to hide all your flaws!

This Girl is

Red Hot

Anna Kendrick is so much more than a funny tweet or a cute song with cups - and she’s just getting started.

I

t’s hard to write about Anna Kendrick without imagining her reading it and cringing. Despite being a card-carrying member of the celebrity club for some time now, Anna’s more awkward than a baby giraffe. That’s not speculation either, it’s actually in her twitter profile description: “Pale, awkward and very very small.” And just in case you missed the memo, she follows that up with regular reminders in her feed too: “Does anyone else think ‘don’t be a weirdo, don’t be a weirdo’ over and over when entering social gatherings? ’Cause I don’t.” “When is ‘that terrified of everyone I don’t know’ feeling going to go away?” “Yes, of course I got your text – I’m just ignoring it. Don’t make it weird.” You can imagine her feeling very squeamish at the idea of someone talking about her using cover profile cliches like “pint-sized star” or saying “this is Anna’s year”. Both of which would be true, by the way. So, even though you kind of want to say that if Selena Gomez’s Instagram and Jennifer Lawrence had a baby, it would be her (talented, hilarious and a hit on social media), you don’t. The one thing you might get away with calling her? A hard worker. This girl has starred in over 30 movies since 2003.

56 SEPTEMBER 2016

In the second half of this year alone, she has three movies – Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Accountant and Trolls – and a book of essays titled Scrappy Little Nobody all poised for release. The first, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, stars one of her best pals Aubrey Plaza of Parks and Recreation fame, fellow Pitch Perfect alumn Adam DeVine and blockbuster veteran Zac Efron. Following a girlpower summer movie lineup including Tarzan (where, OK, Jane was still rescued, but she also had some sassy dialogue, jumped into a river of hippos and wore more than a loin cloth) and Ghostbusters (enough said), Mike and Dave... is set to the flip the buddy comedy on its head; with girls who can out-party the guys. “[Aubrey and I] found this script before there was a director attached or anything,” she told Refinery 29. “And we were like, ‘I mean, we’re going to make this movie.’ And then, we have to let the powers that be think that they’re in charge and running Hollywood. And then, we were like, ‘Hi, we’re going to be in the movie. Don’t object, just let it happen.’”

Pitch-perfect career Girl bosses are having a real moment, but Anna has been championing movies that buck the norm for some time.

58 SEPTEMBER 2016

Real as it gets

Anna’s Twitter feed has spawned a mass of listicles from “14 times Anna Kendrick was the funniest person on Twitter” and “21 times Anna Kendrick said what we were all thinking”. Countless interviews and pithy tweets have her telling hilarious anecdotes, like the time a guy asked her to go home with her, and she thought he was homeless. Or when she and Aubrey went to Mexico and pretended to sulk when fans came to praise the other. Dig a little further though, and you’ll realise that while she’s hilarious, in an age where we laud “authenticity”, Anna is one of the rare few who keep her cards close to her chest. Google “Anna Kendrick boyfriend” and the first article that pops up is a “rare appearance” with Fault in Our Stars cinematographer Ben Richardson back in April. She doesn’t mention her best friend’s name in a TV interview, but will tell you about their 13-hour Lord of the Rings marathon. Interestingly, here’s a sneak peek from her new book she chose to share: “Sometimes, I like to run around photo shoots all carefree and wild, as a

“#Professionals”

layer of protection. When I stay still and focus all my attention and energy on being the best little model I can be and still I get looks of disappointment and confusion because I don’t look like Kendall Jenner, it hurts my tiny feelings. (No one should be compared to Kendall Jenner. It’s cruel and unusual.) So I run around a little. I’m not an un-photographable troll! I’m just a little scamp who’s not focused.”

BFF material

While perhaps some of her humour might be a defense mechanism, it has absolutely kept her sane, and allowed her to saturate the movie market without boring people. In her interview with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit, she revealed, “I definitely got to the point where I was like, ‘My life has been falling apart for four years, I need to get my act together.” Never in a million years would we have thought that. But though we may not know the inner workings of Anna just yet, here’s hoping her book will shed some more light. In any case, we’re pretty certain we know enough to know we definitely want to be friends with her.

“I would just like to remind everybody of the reality of the situation.”

“Party/After Party/Truth In Advertising”

INSTA-COMEDY A case for why you should add Anna on Instagram.

“This edit looks like I’m watching myself give a speech and I’m less than impressed.”

“...So happy I got to go to HP preview night tonight!!! So magical I cried two (or five) times. This is not an ad...”

“This plane just got smaller.”

Images Getty Images Text Claire Starkey.

Her breakout movie was Twilight, where she played Bella’s best friend Jessica Stanley. Kendrick was good, but with so much hype surrounding Kristen and Rob, it wasn’t quite her time. Then came Up in the Air, where she played an uptight college grad opposite George Clooney – whom she swears is beyond nice and would run lines with her despite being, you know, George Clooney – and scored herself an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Next, she jumped to cult favourite Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which Anna recently admitted in an interview with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit that she didn’t really understand. “I did Scott Pilgrim because I was obsessed with [director] Edgar Wright’s work. On paper, I did not get [the script] at all. I trusted it would be up to the level of work he had created before, and it was. But the entire time we were making it, I had no idea what was going on!” From there, she ping-ponged her special breed of sarcastic/vulnerable acting across any project big or small that piqued her interest, including black comedy 50/50, rom-com What to Expect When You’re Expecting, kid’s movie ParaNorman and crime drama End of Watch. Then came Pitch Perfect, and the legendary “Cups” song. Fun fact: according to Vulture, Anna taught herself the cup routine after seeing Anna Burden perform it on YouTube, and when the writers of Pitch Perfect found out about this very unusual skillset, they added it in. “Cups” hit the top 10, Pitch Perfect was a runaway success and suddenly the world seemed to collectively stumble on her Twitter account and couldn’t get enough of her. She should have been set for saturation, but somehow Anna has avoided being on the cover of People and the side bar of Daily Mail. Her low-key lifestyle and attitude has stopped her from being another celeb on the red carpet conveyer belt. For starters, her public MO in interviews and on social media is self-deprecating humour as opposed to tell-all.

Your Life, Your Rules!

Confidence Relationships Love & Lust Money & Career

The online dating world is already full of fancy algorithms and formulas, but for getting a date, why not try good ol’ data instead? A paper published by the London School of Medicine analysed over 80 studies related to dating, psychology and behavioural science, and used those results to extrapolate an action plan for an online dating profile. So here’s how to get him to swipe right, according to statistics.

IT’S A MATCH! Follow these practical tips on how to end that Tinder drought once and for all.

1

The As have it If you need a username, create one that starts with the letters “A-M”. According to the paper, “a variety of measures of success are correlated with names higher up in the alphabet”. This apparently extends to success on OkCupid, too.

2

Smile like you mean it While physical appearance comes out trumps in photos, there are things you can do to skew things further in your favour. “A genuine smile, one that crinkles up your eyes” will get good hits, and so will tilting your head slightly. The best colour to wear for a profile pic plays on his primal instincts: red.

3

Say it in rhyme The recommended way to start a conversation is with a short, positive remark. Keep it personal – address the person’s profile or photo. But the authors caution, “We routinely reject unrealistically positive views of ourselves,” so don’t go overboard. Surprisingly, cheesy rhymes may also be the way to go as rhyming poetry has an instinctive appeal. Who knew?

Secrets of the

SQ Girl She’s graceful and she’s poised – even at 30,000 feet. We caught up with a former Singapore Airlines wonderwoman to find out their superpowers (which are all very applicable for life here on ground too). Sharifah Almaghbouly worked as a member of Singapore Airlines’ cabin crew for 12 years and there’s just something about her. Meeting Sharifah, you’re immediately struck by her casual finesse and effortless style. She tells us how the iconic Singapore Girl gets her famous poise.

1

A great fit is a powerful thing

“The uniform (the famous kebaya sarong) is so tight. It’s made to measure just for you by the best tailors in Singapore. Putting it on feels like putting on an armour – it’s amazing. You’ll stand straighter and you’ll feel like, ‘I’m ready to take on anything. I’m ready for battle!’ You should see us hitch them up into minis in a split-second in our emergency training!”

2

Do it right the first time

“You learn quickly that lazy, sloppy behaviour is just not worth it. For example, in training, you’re given strict advice on makeup colours and techniques specifically to suit your features and colouring, and the right hairstyle to complement your face shape or hide your sticking-out ears! If you turn up with messy hair or the wrong colour eyeshadow on, you’re sent home to re-do it. It’s brutal, so you learn fast.”

62 SEPTEMBER 2016

3

Everyone needs a crew

“As a newbie crew member, you need to know your place. When you’re on layover, it’s the junior’s job to give a wake up call to every single crew member. If they don’t answer, you call again… and again. You need to show them respect and when you earn it, it’s amazing. Crew work hard and play hard together. You’re each other’s family in another city and when things go wrong – in the air or on the ground – you have a fierce army behind you.”

4

Smile

“We actually get passengers e-mailing in complaints if we haven’t smiled enough! But it’s about more than keeping them happy. Looking cheerful helps you keep your cool. Whatever’s going on, it’s tough to lose your temper when you’re smiling. Plus, it keeps everyone else calm, too. Anger only ever makes bad situations worse.”

5

Mistakes happen – don’t freak out Even perfectly coiffed crew are

human, right? “I was once 16 hours into a flight and I was chatting to a passenger, pouring a drink onto his tray – not into the glass. I just apologised

@CLEOsg

CLEO_Singapore

CLEOmagazine

and laughed with him. It happens to everyone sometimes!”

6

Know your stuff

“You realise pretty quickly to learn everything about the wine, the cheese, the city you’re flying to – because some passengers see us – and treat us – like vacuous, dress up dolls. Never give them a chance to make you look like an idiot.” The takeaway? Do your research.

7

Never say “No”

This doesn’t mean you should act like a doormat. “Professionals in any industry try to find solutions to problems. Say there aren’t enough The Straits Times for everyone who requests one at boarding, for example. I’ve seen crew literally race to a 7-Eleven to buy more copies before take off.” However, if passengers are being obnoxious or abusive, Singapore Girls will stand their ground.

8

Be punctual

Crew members are expected to show up for each flight two hours before take-off for briefing. Every. Single. Flight. “If you’re late,” says Sharifah, “you’re flustered and not well prepared and you’ll make mistakes.”

CONFIDENCE

Your Life Your Rules

Your Life Your Rules dating apps can be used to find a potential partner. In the fast-paced world we live in, a lot of us are constantly working, and apps are one of the most direct ways of meeting someone new. Right now, I prefer Coffee Meets Bagel, as the girls I chat with on the app seem more sincere in looking for someone to be in a relationship with. Despite the fact that it’s not working out for me so far, I will stay optimistic!” MIN QUAN

Have You Ever Wondered…

What Men Think of Tinder Now? In which we ask three men to get candid on a very hot topic. Meet this month’s guy panel:

Compiled by Kit Chua.

Clinton Zheng, 27

“You should have at least one solo photo on your profile. Guys don’t want to have to second guess which one you are in the group photo and pray for the best.”

Marc Lim, 28

Lee Min Quan, 29

“And if he stops messaging you after you guys take the conversation off Tinder, he has probably moved on.”

Being inauthentic (AKA heavily photoshopped pictures on your profile) is an instant no-no. It’s like false advertising, right? I think people prefer to get what they see, and see what they get. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, so you never know who might fancy your style and look. The idea is to be authentic. So if you choose to present your natural look, the chances of you meeting someone who genuinely likes you is higher. That acts as a very good natural filter, in my opinion. After conversation on the app has been initiated, it’s poor form to rant about your life or job. A level of intimacy is required to withstand the weight of your negativity – it’s not appropriate for someone you’ve just met! And if he stops messaging you after you guys take the conversation off Tinder, he has probably moved on. Or perhaps the profile picture on WhatsApp doesn’t match the Tinder profile! But if that happens, simply move on.” CLINTON

When it comes to Tinder, I know guys who are on it purely to look for hookups, [but there are those who] are looking for relationships. Among my own guy friends, we’ll be open about what we’re looking for on Tinder, but if girls were to ask, usually we would give a half-truth and say we’re just on it to make friends. Friends... with benefits, that is. I daresay that the majority, though, are game for either and will go with the flow either way. If they meet someone who’s DTF (google it!), a hook-up will suffice. But if there’s a mutual connection, they might explore a relationship together. I know quite a few compatible couples who met on Tinder. You should have at least one solo photo on your Tinder profile. Guys, being visual creatures, don’t want to have to second guess which one you are in the group photo, and pray for the best when it’s time to meet up. Personally, I’m not too keen on girls with profiles that have absolutely no description/information, as it either shows a complete lack of effort or an ‘I’m-too-cool to care’ attitude which personally is a turn-off. Looks can only get you so far.” MARC

ASK MEN

I spend most of my time working, so I don’t have many opportunities to meet new people. For me, Tinder is about expanding my social circle – mostly to find someone I can have a relationship with. It’s not just about sex, although I do have friends who use it to hook up with girls. Truthfully, I haven’t had many meaningful conversations on Tinder, so I don’t use it that much anymore. I do, however, think that

MONEY WISE

Your Life Your Rules

When There’s a Will,

THERE’S A WAY

Picture this: five years from now, you get into a fatal accident with your husband. If you don’t have any kids yet, what’s going to happen to your joint assets, like your house and bank account? If you died without a will – which means you’ve died intestate – your assets will be distributed according to the Intestate Succession Act (applicable to non-Muslims only). And according to the law, the older spouse is presumed to have died first – which means the joint assets would be handed over to the younger spouse. Following the younger spouse’s passing, his or her parents would gain ownership of all of the joint assets. So if your future husband is younger than you are, all of your money and property would go to his parents if you two are childless, leaving nothing for your own parents if you don’t have a will. Bet you didn’t know that, huh? Besides making sure your own family is taken care of in case of an unexpected death, having a will in place helps to prevent disputes. “But I only have eight dollars to my name,” you say. We hear you. That’s what we thought too, but as it turns out, most of us would still have a few things that need to be taken care of. “You will probably have: a bank account; a

coverage under the Dependants’ Protection Scheme for $48,000; insurance coverage from your employer; and personal insurance policies,” says will writer Patrick Chang from Simply Wills. “It is not the quantum of the assets, but the nature of the assets that matters,” adds Rayney Wong, Director of Vision Law LLC.

How to do it While it’s not mandatory to have a lawyer to help you draw up a will, it’s highly recommended. “To save money, some people tried to write their own wills but fail to comply with the requirements of a valid will – like having two witnesses present at the time of signing – and the estate fell into intestacy laws instead,” reveals Rayney. So how much does it cost to lawyer up? Depending on the complexity of your will, it can cost between $300 and $800. Alternatively, there are companies which are not law firms, that offer professional will writing services that might charge you lower rates.

What should go in it Basically, anything that you own, like your bank account, your car, and any investments that you might have should be distributed in your will. It might also be worth setting up a meeting with your insurance agent to talk about which of your policies have payouts that are triggered by death, and if the proceeds would be paid out to any specific person. Oh, and if at this point you’re thinking, what about my CPF account? You can’t specify who should get your CPF savings in your will – instead, you’ll have to make a CPF nomination. Otherwise, your CPF assets will be distributed according to intestacy laws.

Images 123RF.com Text Sophie Hong.

Down the road… After you’ve drawn up your will, remember to review it from time to time, such as when you get married, have kids, or even acquired a new property under your name. “For example, if the relationship with a person named in the will turns sour, usually the client will want to remove that person. The passing of the person mentioned in the will, will also trigger a review,” adds Patrick. And here’s an interesting nugget of information: a divorce doesn’t automatically remove your ex-husband from your will. Just FYI!

When and how did you first become interested in baking? I dabbled in baking since my junior college times. Then during university, I worked at a bakery and cafe to earn extra pocket money on the side. It was then that I started exploring more about baking.

What inspired you to use cakes to tell stories? I just thought it would be nice to have something special for a special occasion and I want to offer something different for those who don’t want another store-bought cake for their birthday. Then, with every cake I made I’d post the story behind it on Facebook. That seemed to gain traction; people were commenting on the photos and sharing my works on their pages. That was when I realised there was some interest and demand in what I do – customising bakes to real-life stories.

We quiz this baker on her favourite sweets 1. Name some of your favourite cafes in Singapore. I love Mu Parlour’s desserts and I absolutely adore Merely Ice Cream’s flavours.

What was your most difficult project? Wedding cakes are difficult for me! That aside, I once made a terrarium-inspired cake. Conceptually, that was challenging. It’s difficult too when I’m presented with lots of dietary concerns to work with. I once got this really long e-mail from a girl who detailed all the items she couldn’t eat. I wasn’t left with many ingredients to work with.

Style Influencer? How Much Does It Cost to Be a

Ever looked at the effortlessly chic OOTD of a style influencer and wondered how she does it? Us too. We dive into the wardrobes of two stylish people of Instagram to find out what it takes to look so flawless at any time, any angle.

68 SEPTEMBER 2016

It’s not realistic to aspire to have this kind of wardrobe if you’re the average person on the street with a normal budget. You have to remember that influencers get a lot of

sponsorships.”

Bloggerati by Nuffnang, Charlotte Lum, 21 @charlottelum www.charlottelum.blogspot.com On average, how much do you spend on shopping every month? About $500 to $600. Wow, I wasn’t aware of how much I was spending till this interview! I’m kind of a shopaholic and I sometimes go on shopping sprees so… Would you say that your wardrobe is expensive? Not at all! My wardrobe leans towards the affordable end. I’d much rather spend a certain amount of money on several items than on just one designer item. I usually shop at Bershka, Forever 21, H&M, and online shopping sites like Taobao. As a style influencer, do you feel pressured to be dressed up all the time and not repeat your outfits? I usually plan my outfits the night before, and I put a lot of thought into what I wear. But yes, of course I do repeat outfits for casual events, like when I’m hanging out with my friends. Just no pictures when that happens! Do you think it’s possible for the average girl to have the wardrobe of a style influencer? It’s not realistic to aspire to have this kind of wardrobe if you’re the average person on the street with a normal budget. You have to remember that influencers get a lot of sponsorships. Like I just started in this industry last year, and I’ve already got enough clothes to last me the entire year just from sponsorships alone. Wow, a whole year’s worth of sponsored clothes? Your wardrobe must be bursting! Yeah, it feels like I have a thousand pieces of clothing. There’s a spare room in my house that I use for storing clothes, plus I also have bags of clothes sitting in my storeroom. It got to the point where my dad is asking me to consider buying an external storage space to house all of them. How do you organise your wardrobe, and how do you decide if it’s time to toss an item? I generally categorise them into three piles: clothes that are new, clothes that I have already worn out, and clothes that I want to sell off at a flea market. SEPTEMBER 2016 69

I always dress for myself. Sometimes, people ask me why I’m dressed so nicely when it’s a casual event. But I dress nicely because I want to feel good about myself.”

Trishna Goklani, 22 So, how much do you spend on clothes? I wouldn’t say that my wardrobe is an expensive one – in fact, I used to shop a lot at flea markets. And I usually wait for sales; I seldom buy clothes at full price. My style changes every few months, so I’d rather not spend so much on something that I might only wear out once or twice. Let’s talk about your wardrobe. It takes up a third of your room! My mum designed it. We renovated our house recently, so she decided to upgrade my wardrobe. Initially, she wanted to have another one on the other wall, but I told her it’s too much. Previously, my wardrobe only had one column. Where do you usually shop? I love Zara. I shop a lot there. It’s an affordable way to experiment with style, and I find that I can wear some of their pieces all-season. I sometimes shop online as well, and I also get stuff free. What are some items in your wardrobe that have a special place in your heart? I still keep the collection that I designed 70 SEPTEMBER 2016

for my final-year project in school! The central theme that I had was feminism and female empowerment, and I wanted to create clothes (right) that encapsulate that. Plus, I spent four months on bringing that collection to life, so… When did you decide to become a style influencer? I never had plans to be an influencer. I was a fashion student in polytechnic, and I wanted to become a fashion designer at first. But I started experimenting with my style when I was in school, and that’s when I started documenting my outfits. After a while, I realised I really enjoyed taking photos of my outfits, and I guess my online following just started from there. But being an influencer is just a side thing for me; my main goal is still to build a career in the fashion industry – be it as a stylist or creative director. What’s something that most people don’t realise about being a style influencer? To me, being a style influencer is about expressing myself as a person. This stems from my love for fashion. There’s this pressure to come up with interesting content – I don’t want my followers to see something they can find everywhere

else, you know? It’s important for influencers to find a niche. And what is your niche? One thing I want to do with my platform is to represent my race. I use this hashtag, #browngirlreppin (laughs)... When I was growing up, [some people] would make fun of my skin tone, or comment on how brown I am. When I first started doing this, I received comments like “thanks for doing this”, “you’re an inspiration”, and this was back when I had only about a thousand followers? So if there’s one thing I want to stand out for, it’s for embracing myself and inspiring others to do the same. Do you have a fashion rule that you would never break? I would never let anyone tell me what I can or cannot wear, not even my boyfriend. I always dress for myself. Sometimes, people ask me why I’m dressed so nicely when it’s a casual event. But I dress nicely because I want to feel good about myself.

Boyfriends of Instagram The saying goes, “Behind every successful man stands a woman”. Well, behind most successful social media influencers, lies a loyal and supportive boyfriend too. Here are three that deserve a spotlight as bright as their love for their other half. Shane Lim, 26, Graduate student Boyfriend of: Jemimah Wei (aka Jemma) (@jemmawei) What do you love about Jemma?

I love that she’s an exceptionally talented writer. I love her independence. I love her generosity and her openness to new experiences. I love her resilience in the face of adversity. I love her smile. I love the shape of her head. I also love the way her bronzer smudges on my sleeves.

Do you think Jemma’s online and offline personalities differ?

Definitely. I would say she’s unintentionally funnier offline. She pronounces yellow as “yah-low”, and insists everyone else is wrong. There was once she asked if Spain was in the UK, when she meant to ask if Spain was in the EU. Also, she does a lot of work offline that doesn’t always translate online. For instance, you’d see pretty cups of coffee on her Instagram page but you wouldn’t see the long hours she puts into studying, working and preparing for gigs, all of which necessitate the coffee in the first place.

How do you show Jemma that you support her career? I help her with photos and draw stuff sometimes. And give her hugs. Mostly hugs.

What is the biggest challenge of dating an influencer?

Waiting to eat while she gets her perfect food shot!

Shan drew theis super-cute pic of Jemma!

Matthias Lim, 25, Investment Banker Boyfriend of: Yeoh Mongchin (@mongabong) How did you and Mongchin fall in love?

We met during sports camp in SMU and were in a school pageant together. Subsequently we became close friends and hung out a lot more that following year. I would say we were two good friends who became lovers. She still is my best friend.

How do you feel about your girlfriend being constantly in the public eye?

It needs some getting used to but I think she handles the attention really well and is not one to let it get to her head. Because of that, I’m reassured and I fully support her in this path.

Have you ever been recognised on the streets as being Mongchin’s boyfriend? Yes, I have. There have been instances where people come up to me and say hi.

Joal Ong, 22, Actor Boyfriend of: Christabel Chua (@bellywellyjelly) How did you and Christabel meet?

Images Shane Lim, Joal Ong, Matthias Lim Text Liu Kai Ying.

We met on set during a video shoot [for The Smart Local]. Shortly after, we acted as an on-screen couple for a web comedy series and I started asking her out.

Is it difficult to have so many strangers getting a glimpse of your relationship?

I would say that it’s something I would share even if she wasn’t an influencer, because I’m proud of who she is. We never intended to be “relationship goals” or whatsoever. Then again, I’d like to remind people that there’s always a side they don’t see. We have our fair share of bickering, but we always make up and that’s the most important.

What are some perks of dating a social media influencer? Free stuff! Just kidding. We get to experience a lot together and I got to learn a bit about photography as well as hosting. The truly best part about dating [Christabel]? It’s not the fact that she is [an influencer], but that she touches and inspires me the way she does.

Everything About Family planning expert Dr Philip Goldstone gives us the lowdown on How does it work?

How long does it last?

One pill made up of two hormones (oestrogen and progestogen); the other, just the latter.

The combined pill prevents an egg being released during each period cycle. The progestogenonly pill prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

One pill per day. Comes with three to four months’ supply.

A progestogen injection using a needle.

It prevents the egg from being released and prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

12 weeks.

Combined Vaginal Ring

A vaginal ring containing two hormones (oestrogen and progestogen).

The hormones are released from the ring and absorbed into the vaginal wall to prevent the egg from being released.

It’s inserted for three weeks and removed for one week per month, then a new one is inserted.

Male Condom

A rubber, latex or non-latex sheath worn over the penis during sex.

The condom traps sperm to prevent it from entering the vagina.

Each condom is single-use.

A small rod containing progestogen that is inserted under the skin in your upper arm by a doctor.

It prevents the egg from being released and prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

Three years, but it’s easily reversible. Natural fertility will return as soon as you have it removed.

A single dose pill containing progestogen.

Works by stopping or delaying the release of the egg, but may also prevent the egg and sperm meeting.

Each ECP is single-use.

A dome/cup of rubber that’s placed over the cervix.

It prevents sperm entering the uterus, but must be used with spermicide – a liquid you insert into the vagina before sex to stop sperm moving.

If properly cared for, a diaphragm should last up to two years.

A plastic and copper device fitted in the uterus.

It prevents the egg and sperm from meeting.

Stays in place for five to 10 years, depending on the type.

SMART REPORT

A

whopping $4,000 for two Instagram updates and a blog post? Welcome to the business of being an influencer – where a little bit of personality, a dash of good taste and a lot of media-savvy can earn you big bucks and Insta-fame. But if you think all you’d need to earn $4,000 per campaign is a DSLR camera and a personalised domain name, you’d be wrong. With those two things, you’re just a blogger, which puts you one step above any random netizen with a Tumblr account. But… blogger, influencer, what’s the difference, right? While a lot of us use these two terms interchangeably, a blogger is someone who runs a blog – an online journal, basically. An influencer, as the name suggests, is a person with influence; someone who can affect the thoughts, opinions, tastes and buying habits of her audience. Usually, an influencer will maintain a blog as a way of connecting to her followers, but not all bloggers are necessarily influencers. Perhaps the most important

The Business

Influence

of

Images 123RF.com Text Kit Chua.

We pore over what they eat, what they wear, what they do and who they do it with, but what do influencers really do for a living… and how do they do it? distinction between the two is this – “blogger” is a term that evolved out of the Internet, and is a convenient catchall phrase that describes a new wave of diarists who emerged as the World Wide Web gained mainstream popularity. On the other hand, the term “influencer” has its genesis in the marketing industry. The idea of influencer marketing actually pre-dates the Internet by several decades, but the advent of social media also heralded the rise of a new category of Insta-famous people – those who don’t fit the mould of traditional celebrities, but whose popularity on social media sites could easily be tapped into by brands whose target audiences align with that particular person’s following. And, ta-da, in a few short years, a rich new marketing vehicle arrived – the influencer.

From blogger to influencer

It’s no coincidence that as the marketing industry adapted to the changing digital landscape, people who were once

bloggers became influencers. In doing so, what was once considered as a hobby evolved into a bona fide career, and a pretty lucrative one, to boot. So when you think of the term “influencer”, the first thing you think of should be dollars and cents, not well-curated Instagram feeds. Why? Simply because there are plenty of people who are massively popular online, but not all of them are looking to monetise that popularity. For those who are, the term “influencer” is the most convenient way of marketing themselves to brands, collaborators and other prospective clients. But what do influencers really have to offer? It’s easy to dismiss them as pretty girls who take pretty pictures, and coast on their looks to make a dime. But there’s actually more to it than that. Xin Lin, an NUS student who has over 30,000 followers on Instagram, is currently signed to Nuffnang’s stable of influencers, and has worked with brands like Starhub, NIVEA and Orchard Central. She attributes her success on social media to “the willingness and

SEPTEMBER 2016 79

SMART REPORT openness to share my thoughts and life on social media.” In the age of reality TV and oversharing, that sounds pretty frivolous, but if you think about it, it’s not. Because the real job of an influencer isn’t actually to peddle the latest beauty product, fashion label or fruit juice (even though that’s how they end up making money). Ultimately, what influencers really sell – to both their clients and the people that follow them – are their personal brands. Their brands include their names, their faces, their histories, their personalities, the stories they tell and the connections they have with their followers. And if you were going to make money from all of those things – if you were going to put a price on brand “you” – how much would you charge? The correct answer: as highly as you possibly could. At least, that’s what I think.

The real meTM

So what makes a person a brand? Being an influencer is a pretty surreal occupation, especially when you consider that, as an influencer, in many ways, being “you” is your profession. And like any other job, there are key performance indicators of how well you can be you. The most obvious method? Looking at the statistics – the number of followers, likes and comments. But in the age of web bots and bought followers, those numbers are often met with distrust. The key standard by which influencers are measured is actually a lot less tangible than the number of followers they have. Instead, an influencer’s perceived value has a lot to do with one of the buzzwords of the new millennium – authenticity. “Authenticity and sharing their stories are the essence of what makes their influence,” concurs Selina Heng, the Regional Manager of Talent and Community at Netccentric, which is the parent company of Nuffnang – a leading blog advertising company in Singapore that represents familiar names such as Xiaxue, Bong Qiu Qiu and Lian Meiting. Authenticity also ties into the

80 SEPTEMBER 2016

idea of “engagement”, which is a key metric that Nuffnang uses to assess its influencers and their reach. (They also have a secret internal formula to calculate engagement, which was not shared with me.) In the context of social media, engagement can mean “the quality of the comments or the conversion from online engagement to purchase, which is difficult and timeconsuming to measure,” explains Selina. To illustrate the concept of engagement, Selina cites a follower who asked to know more details about an experience that was posted on an influencer’s feed as an example of a high-quality engagement. On the other hand, someone who responds with the heart-eyes emoji and tags a friend offers only a low-quality engagement, she says. “The number of followers, likes and comments can easily be bought,” continues Selina, “But building relationships and the engagements that comes out of that cannot be fabricated.” So it all comes down to one thing – being real. After all, nothing invites the ire of the Internet’s trolls and lurkers like someone getting caught for being fake. “Being authentic to my personal brand is a top priority,” agrees Nicole Wong, who isn’t just an influencer, but also serves as a content curator and stylist. “It takes a lot of work to build a brand and it is never worth it to waste it all over money,” she continues. “With the right client, you can easily create

“I am what most people would describe as a ‘girl next door’, maybe just a more vocal one. I lead a life very similar to anyone else who is a university undergrad, except maybe I have one too many priorities to juggle! quality content as you truly believe in their product or brand. Similarly, the client will come to you if they believe in your style and taste.”

The price of influence

Which brings us to the other thing – when you’re an influencer, being real also means getting paid, because authenticity is the premium that today’s brands are paying influencers top dollar for. “In my experience, a good social media influencer who has created a wealth of content that is interesting, engaging and reliable, can bring a personal touch that is missing sometimes in traditional media,” says a marketing executive from a beauty

I do not see myself as one as I wear multiple hats and do not like to be defined by a single label. brand, who works directly with bloggers and influencers on a regular basis. “These people, we imagine, are like you and me,” she adds, “The power of social media influencers is the valuable trust that their fans have in them. This comes from the influencers being honest, sincere and authentic about what they are promoting. [So] if done right and depending on the objective, their personal touch and endorsement could mean more than a flashy TV commercial.” How much is this personal touch worth? If you’re talking about monetary value, well, it partly depends on the level of influence a social media personality commands, but often times, there’s no fixed rate, either. “A lot of it depends on negotiation between the brand and the blogger or their agent,” explains the marketing executive. “An A-lister like Xiaxue can command between $2,000 and $4,000 for a blog post, depending on negotiations with her agency. Instagram posts could be around $500 to $800, and the rate decreases for every lower-tier blogger.”

Because you’re worth it

As to whether influencers are truly worth the rates they are paid – the answer to that seems to be subjective. “The right influencer working with the right brand will be absolutely worth every penny,” affirms the marketing executive. A digital manager at a media and advertising agency, however, disagrees: “Influencers aren’t particularly worth the amount that they’re paid, especially if they

are merely touting products that we already are giving them,” says the manager, who hires influencers based on the needs of her clients. “If they’re required to put in a public appearance for events and so on, or required to showcase a particular skill-set – like take a series of photos, or craft a song – then, yes.” “But if the sole purpose of the influencer is her appearance and her claim that a product works great, it will only be worth it for us if they are tied to the brand and not going around claiming every product is great every other week,” she adds. “So if we engage with the influencer on a long-term basis, as sort of an ambassador, it would make it worth it. It really depends on what the brand is, and what you want them to do.” Even the marketing executive agrees that when it comes to working with influencers, it’s important to differentiate between real quality from the fluff: “There are a growing number of social media influencers who are ‘pretty faces’ but do not have much to offer their fans or the brands they work with,” she concedes. “One such social media influencer I worked with is a fashion guru in her 20s who was popular for her OOTDs. However, she didn’t create a strong connection with her fans and her content wasn’t unique enough. When we asked consumers for feedback on the posts she created, they couldn’t remember it, and the worst was when we created an event together, only one fan showed up to meet with her.” Despite the misses and the flops, however, influencers aren’t going away any time soon. So long as there’s social media to expose us to the lives of those we either relate to or aspire to emulate, the simple truth is that we’ll continue to like and follow the influencers who inspire us, while the brands continue to pay them. Maybe one day, we’ll see the death of the influencer, just as VJs were once the coolest kids on the block but now barely register on the cultural radar. But for now, the influencer class is here to stay. And we’ll just keep on double-tapping, one $4,000 post at a time.

You’re playing the role of Mimi in Pangdemonium’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of Rent. What made you decide to take on this project in the first place? I've always been a huge fan of the show, especially its music. It's so iconic. And when I was approached by [the Artistic Directors] Adrian and Tracie, I jumped on it because I've never worked with them before, and I would've been crazy to pass up an opportunity like that! How has the acting experience been? How is this different from being in front of the camera, seeing that it’s a live stage show? All the acting that I've ever done has been on stage; that's all I know for now. I guess a live stage show is more intimate. You get to feel and breathe and live in the emotions of a scene with the audience when you're performing right in front of them. We hear you’re working on new music! When is it coming out? Yes, I'm working on new music! My first single and music video is coming out sometime in September. Follow me on Snapchat and Twitter (@TabithaNauser) for more details! How long have you been working on your new music, and what can we expect from it? I feel like I've been working on my music for years! But I really only started the actual process about four months ago. I would say it has a darker sound, but it still has the quality of a catchy pop tune. I don't think there's anything like it out in the market now. Where do you get the inspiration for your music from? Anything and everything! I'm a very visual person, so fashion and art contribute greatly as inspirations. I'm also really lucky to be surrounded by amazing people with so much talent and great ideas that shape a lot of how I see the world, and how I portray my music.

Hot Body

Blitz

What better way to beat the heat than to crash by the beach? But if you’re not ready to head out, the right products can go a long way towards getting your body bikiniready. Here’s the prep required to make stepping into a swimsuit as easy as sipping a mojito.

1

Skin Detox

Hands up if you’re battling a bloated tummy, puffy ankles, ingrown hairs, uneven skin tone and/or all of the above? Squeeze in five minutes of dry bodybrushing each day before your morning shower to kick these common concerns. “The main benefit is the stimulation of the lymphatic system – the body’s detox system,” says skin and nutrition expert, Fiona Tuck. “It’s great for fluid retention and also aids digestion.” Start at your feet and, using short strokes, work towards the heart. If you’d prefer to detox horizontally, try an epsom salt bath. Packed with magnesium and sulfates, it helps ward off anxiety and inflammation, and improves muscle function and skin tissue. Plus, it’s seriously relaxing. SEPTEMBER 2016 103

Exfoliating is essential prep for hair removal. Scrubbing off any dead skin frees ingrown hairs and creates an even canvas so your razor or wax strip can do its job, obstacle free. Sun exposure can bring Fresh Cocoa Body Exfoliant, $65 on sensitivity and make the skin more reactive to shaving, so slather on sunscreen before heading outside.

Nourish

Haven’t paid your legs a downward glance since your last beach holiday? Lucky for you, getting a dried-out bod back to prime hydration can be done in one week. “The best time to moisturise is when your skin is still slightly damp after showering,” Fiona explains. “You’re actually going to seal in a significant amount of extra moisture.” Moisturising once a day is enough, but if those scales are hard to shake, check the ingredients of your body wash. Using something soap-free with a mild pH level, like Avene Cold Cream UltraRich Cleansing Gel, $30.50, will keep the outer layer of your skin calm.

4

Self-conscious about stretch marks or acne scars? While there are professional treatments like skin needling (also known as dermal rolling) available that can improve the appearance of these forms of scarring, we’re loving the instant benefits of bronzing makeup and fake tan formulations. If you have an hour to get ready, apply an express tanning mousse, then wash it off before hitting the sand. This will give your body a natural glow that’ll develop gradually throughout the day. But what if you have more like 10 minutes before you need to slip into a two-piece? Massage in a BB cream to mask any imperfections.

Skin perfectors These guys aren’t completely waterproof, but they’ll keep you looking oh-so on point while kicking back on a deck chair. St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $49.80

Contour

Next up, it’s time to find toning agents that’ll work their magic on those not-as-firm bits. Fiona recommends looking for peptide-based ingredients as they mimic and stimulate collagen production, creating that feeling of firmness. Green coffee extract is Clarins Body Shaping Cream, $102 another favourite. Apply your products with firm, circular motions to bring more nutrients to the area you wish to treat, encouraging it to regenerate faster. Will this get rid of dimples? Not exactly. Cellulite is best addressed via diet and exercise before anything else. “Adding essential fatty acids to your diet is crucial for preventing and treating cellulite,” Fiona suggests. 104 SEPTEMBER 2016

Applying sun protection daily is essential to guard against dry skin and pigmentation. Unfortunately, most sunscreens leave an icky residue, especially when we’re working up a sweat. Enter Sunplay’s new Skin Aqua suncreens, which are formulated to keep your skin dry. The water- and sweat-proof formula means they’re perfect for our humid weather, so you can step out of the house without worry!

SUN

Sunplay special

Tried and tested! Skin Aqua Sarafit Fragrance-free UV Milk SPF 50+ PA++++

“I have to admit that I don’t wear sunblock daily because my past experiences with sunblock were pretty sticky – literally. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this sunscreen is lightweight and doesn’t leave an oily or sticky residue. While some [sunscreen] formulas leave a white cast, this blends seamlessly into my skin, so I can wear it even on days when I’m not wearing makeup. It also keeps my skin matte (which is important in Singapore’s weather!) without drying it out.” Rhea Idris, 33

Skin Aqua Sarafit Fragrance-free UV Mist SPF 50+ PA++++

“I love the ease of application. The mist makes it super convenient to apply – it literally takes less than a minute to apply it. I like how my face and skin feel really smooth after applying it, and that it leaves no white residue. It’s great for both days when I put on makeup, as well as days when I let my skin take a break. This is definitely a staple in my morning skincare routine every day of the week.” Gloria Ng, 26

Skin Aqua Sarafit Fragrancefree UV Mist SPF 50+ PA++++ (50g), $9.90 This fragrance- and alcohol-free mist features a double powder technology that prevents your skin from becoming sticky even after you perspire. Its triple-action UV shield also absorbs, reflects and scatters UV rays so your skin stays strong even under the hot sun.

Skin Aqua Sarafit Floral UV Mist SPF 50+ PA++++ (50g), $9.90 This spray-on sunscreen not only comes with a light floral fragrance, it’s alcohol-free and protects your skin just as well as its fragrancefree counterpart. It also delivers hydration to your skin so you’ll feel as fresh as a bouquet of flowers!

Skin Aqua Sarafit Fragrancefree UV Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ (40g), $14.90

Skin Aqua Sarafit Floral UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++

“I’m a daily makeup user, so I’m always on the lookout for a strong sunscreen that can act as a primer for my foundation. I like that this sunscreen is easy to blend and feels light on my skin. It also makes my skin feel smoother, which really helps with the rest of my makeup routine. The floral fragrance is not too strong as well. I also do water sports on weekends, and I find that this sunscreen holds up even after a session of wakeboarding.” Crystal Liu, 30

This sunscreen is great for those with oily and combination skin as it leaves a matte finish. It also simplifies your daily beauty routine as it can also double up as a makeup base, making it great for when you’re out and about or chilling at an alfresco cafe.

Skin Aqua Sarafit Floral UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ (80g), $16.90 If you want your makeup to last throughout the day, the first step would be to create a good base. This lightweight essence smoothes your skin while protecting it from the sun, which helps your makeup look fresh for hours.

Sunplay Skin Aqua Sarafit Fragrance-free products are available at Guardian, NTUC FairPrice and Watsons stores. Sunplay Skin Aqua Sarafit Floral products are available exclusively at all Guardian stores. For more information, visit

Cutting Calories?

Make sure your plate is the right colour. Listen up if you’re trying to eat healthier and do portion control – turns out, the colour of your plate is just as important as what’s on it.

Images 123RF.com Text Sophie Hong.

Roses are red, violets are blue. Did you know the colour of your plate affects how much you eat too? In a study conducted by marketing professors Koert Van Ittersum and Brian Wansink, it was revealed that the higher the contrast between the colour of the food and the colour of the plate, the less you’ll end up eating. To test out this theory, the professors conducted an experiment at a party where Alfredo pasta (white) and tomato pasta (red) were served. Attendees were given either red or white plates, and those who picked the white-on-white or red-on-red option helped themselves to a whopping 30 percent more food compared to those who picked a plate that contrasted with the colour of their food. But that’s not all. Eating off red plates might help to control your appetite as well. A study published in food research journal Appetite saw 240 participants served snacks like popcorn and chocolate chips on either red, white, or blue plates. As it turns out, those who ate off red plates consumed the least amount of snacks. One theory is that red is often the colour used for warning signs, so we associate that colour with danger, which subconsciously makes us want to eat less off a red plate. So, if you’re trying to shed some kilos, maybe it’s time to plan a trip to IKEA soon? @CLEOsg

VAGINAs Let’s talk lady parts, and what the heck they’re trying to tell us.

C

hances are that you’ve had a brush with yeast infection, suffered the agony of a UTI or even been slapped with an STI – so you’re all over what they are and how to avoid them. But even though we’re familiar with these usual suspects, there are other conditions that can affect your nether regions. Before you go into panic mode, we consulted family planning experts Dr Deborah Bateson and Dr Julia Menzies to let us know what to look out for.

VAGINISMUS

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? Vaginismus occurs when the vaginal muscles tighten during sex, making intercourse difficult or impossible. THE NASTY STUFF: Women who suffer

116 SEPTEMBER 2016

from vaginismus experience tightness and pain around the vagina at the time of penetration. Often, this pain is so severe nothing can be inserted into the vaginal passage – tampons included. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? “Some studies estimate that between 1 and 17 percent of women are affected. The causes are not fully understood, but it may be related to an adverse experience when having sex, or a gynaecological examination. It can also be caused by conditions like endometriosis, and skin problems affecting the vulva and vagina,” our experts explained. CAN YOU KICK IT? The root is often psychological, and there is no magic pill. “It is important to be assessed by a doctor, to see if there are any medical conditions,” the doctors advise. “The next

step involves referral to a specialised pelvic floor physiotherapist, or a sex therapist. Treatment is effective, and includes pelvic floor muscle and sensate focus exercises.”

BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? Bacterial vaginosis (BV) happens when the bad bacteria takes over, leaving you susceptible to other vaginal infections. THE NASTY STUFF: BV causes yucky “fishy” odours and an increase in discharge from the vagina – often a greyish colour – while some women don’t show any symptoms at all. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? “BV results from a disturbance in the normal healthy vaginal flora with the overgrowth of certain bacteria, which leads to a more

alkaline environment,” our experts explain. “While it is not considered to be sexually transmitted, many cases of BV are associated with sexual activity.” CAN YOU KICK IT? If you have BV, don’t stress as there are medical measures that can fix it. “Women who have symptoms can be treated with antibiotics either taken orally or inserted into the vagina, although recurrences within six or 12 months are quite common and a longer course of treatment may be advised.”

VAGINITIS

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? Inflammation of the vaginal region, often teamed with a bad infection. THE NASTY STUFF: Symptoms include itching, redness, swelling, discharge, a foul odour, and pain while urinating. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? “There are many conditions which cause vaginitis, but most are related to a change in the balance of your vaginal flora leading to an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria,” the doctors say. In fact, other vaginal offenders can cause vaginitis. “Candidiasis (thrush), bacterial vaginosis and the less common STI trichomoniasis [can lead to vaginitis].” CAN YOU KICK IT? It’s a grey area. As the doctors point out: “treatment depends on the cause”.

Images 123RF.com Text Josie Rozenberg-Clarke.

FIBROIDS (UTERUS)

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? Benign growths that occur inside the uterine walls can sometimes creep out into the inner or outer parts of the uterus. THE NASTY STUFF: Fibroids can often be associated with heavy, prolonged periods. In rare cases, they can cause infertility, miscarriage, pelvic pain and premature labour. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? No one knows. “The female hormones play an important role. This is because fibroids rarely grow in girls before puberty and women after menopause. Pre-existing fibroids stop growing and can shrink after menopause.” CAN YOU KICK IT? “If they’re not causing symptoms, fibroids can generally be left alone, but if they are causing problems, they can be removed by surgery or alternative medical techniques.”

PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the vagina that moves up into the uterus, fallopian tubes and surrounding tissue. THE NASTY STUFF: PID can cause abnormal discharge and bleeding, abdominal pain and fevers. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? “Most cases of PID occur in women aged 20 to 29, and around 60 to 80 percent of cases in this age group are related to a sexually transmitted infection, usually chlamydia,” the experts say. “PID can also occur after a gynaecological procedure like a curette, abortion or, rarely, insertion of an IUD.” CAN YOU KICK IT? Yes – and act quickly. “Treat PID early with antibiotics, which will usually include an injection as well as oral tablets. This will help prevent long-term complications such as blocked tubes, infertility, ectopic pregnancies and pelvic pain. Complications are more common with repeated episodes of PID, so it’s pivotal to treat sexual partners with antibiotics, have regular STI checks and use condoms in new relationships.”

HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA

WHAT ON EARTH IS IT? A chronic skin condition that causes itchy, hard lumps, cysts and boils. This can happen in the armpits, around the breasts and groin. THE NASTY STUFF: The recurring cysts get sore and red if irritated, and can result in the discharge of pus, the development of infection and even cause scarring on the skin. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? The inflammation is caused by blocked hair follicles, but this remains a mystery. “The cause is unclear, but hormones, genetics, smoking and excess weight all play a role,” the experts say. CAN YOU KICK IT? There’s no cure but symptoms can be treated. “Wearing loose clothing, applying warm compresses and keeping the area clean helps but antibiotics or steroid medications can also be important. For severe cases surgical drainage may be required.”

DOUCHE & DONT’S We bust myths of keeping clean “down there”.

Use a wash to avoid infections

OUR EXPERTS SAY: NO “The vagina has a natural cleansing mechanism so washing with plain unperfumed soap and water, or substituting with a mild unperfumed moisturiser which can be lathered up, is the way to go.” Some feminine washes, vaginal deodorants and sprays may cause skin irritation and disrupt the natural vaginal flora so are best avoided.

G-strings increase bacteria

OUR EXPERTS SAY: NO “Cotton undies are best, and avoiding undies at night can be helpful since this encourages natural ventilation and stability of the vagina’s pH level, preventing thrush and bacterial vaginosis. As for G-strings, as long as they’re comfy, there’s no evidence they spread bacteria; wearing them is a matter of personal preference.”

Go to the loo after sex

OUR EXPERTS SAY: YES “Urinating after sex is a useful strategy to help prevent urinary tract infections as is wiping from front to back, drinking plenty of water and urinating frequently. During your period, tampons should be changed regularly and tampons with added perfumes should be avoided.”

Take vitamins for vaginal health

OUR EXPERTS SAY: NO “Eating a healthy, balanced diet is best. There’s no evidence of benefit from vitamins or probiotics in maintaining the health of the vagina, nor from changes to your diet.”

Founded in 2009 by two runners, the brand has gained a sizeable following over the years and for good reason. Don’t be thrown off by the shoe’s chunky soles – it packs twice the shock-absorbing material of traditional running shoes while remaining lightweight, so you get maximum cushioning without the weight. Hoka One One has officially launched in Singapore, and you can find their much ravedabout running shoes at World Of Sports outlets and other authorised dealers including Running Lab, Liv Active, and Running Specialist. Hoka One One shoes retail from $219 to $279 at World of Sports and other authorised dealers. For more information, visit www.hokaoneone.com.

But trust us when we say the NingXia Red beverage won’t be a difficult one to swallow. You just have to get used to the blood red colour and the sour taste of the drink first!

How to Hack Your

Life is just so much better after coffee, but did you know that by tweaking your daily consumption habits, it can also make you an all-round superior person? Let us explain:

ack Hyour routine You stumble out of bed, brew your coffee, then curl up on the couch as you sip yourself awake… and there’s your first mistake. When you wake up, your body naturally releases cortisol, the hormone released in response to stress, which will keep you naturally alert. Drinking coffee at the same time inhibits your body’s ability to produce more cortisol later in the day, meaning you are more reliant on coffee to stay alert. Cortisol levels also peak at midday and in the early evening, so the best time to drink coffee is between say 10am and 2pm. 120 SEPTEMBER 2016

ack Hyour health plan Bulletproof coffee advocates whizz their coffee up with butter to produce a highcalorie 400+ calorie mental boost. Converts report never having had more energy and brain power in their life, but health experts do not endorse consuming chunks of butter every day. A tastier but no less greasy option is to blend (and we are talking blender here, not stirring with a spoon) the coffee with coconut oil for the same effect. @CLEOsg

ack Hyour cravings Instead of adding sugar, honey, stevia or calorific vanilla syrups to your brew, turn to your spice rack for guilt-free deliciousness. Cinnamon sticks and real vanilla pods are really tasty, and pair perfectly with the rich, caramel undertones of a cup of coffee. They also pack a punch of health benefits as they’re full of minerals like magnesium, potassium, manganese and calcium. Just remember to add the spices to the grounds (or even grind it up with the beans) before brewing.

CLEO_Singapore

CLEOmagazine

Don’t get us wrong, we think condensed milk and coffee go together like peaches and cream. But kopitiams are sadly losing favour among younger generations, who are willing to pay $4 or more for their caffeine hit at espresso bars. Why? Mainly because it uses Arabica beans, which are harder and more expensive to grow, and have a richer, less acidic taste compared to kopi’s Robusta beans. Or maybe it’s just that we like to post up photos of latte art to Instagram?

WHAT’S THIS COLD-BREW BUSINESS AND WHY IS IT BETTER THAN AN ICED LATTE? Matthew McLauchlan, wholesale general manager at Common Man Coffee Roasters, explains: “There are more than 800 volatile compounds in coffee, making it one of the most chemically complex products we consume. Brewing coffee cold, and over a relatively long amount of time, allows the water to absorb the beans’ subtle flavours, creating a naturally sweet syrupiness whilst also keeping the beverage’s acidity low. There’s no need to add any sugar or milk, helping you achieve those waistline goals and the lower acidity means it’s easier for your body to process.” Common Man Coffee Roasters is at 22 Martin Road. Open daily from 7.30am to 6.00pm, last orders at 5.30pm.

Lee Jong Suk

Here are three things you need to know about the lead actor of W, the K-Drama du jour, now available for streaming on Viu.

1

He started out as a model

Back in 2005 when he was just 15 years old, Lee Jong Suk became the youngest Korean male model ever to walk the runway at Seoul Fashion Week.

2

Hottie alert!

He just signed on to YG Entertainment

Fun fact: before he became a well-known actor, he played the role of Dara’s hot boyfriend in 2NE1’s music video for “Go Away”. Seems like Lee Jong Suk has now come full circle, as he signed a contract with 2NE1’s label in May this year.

He once helped out an intern

Red carpet interviews can get chaotic when you’re a popular star. During one such interview, a Hong Kong entertainment reporter accused a Korean intern reporter of pushing and a fight ensued. The intern was also ignored by the translator when she asked a question, but Lee Jong Suk, ever the gentleman, noticed and insisted on granting her an answer. Also, is it us or does this sound like a meet-cute scenario in a romance drama?

Shawn Mendes This singer-songwriter won’t be needing stitches now with his rising popularity.

He went from posting song covers on Vine to being a multi-platinum recording artist and opening act for Taylor Swift’s “The 1989 World Tour”, and he did all that before his 18th birthday. Whew. Shawn Mendes is getting ready to capture the spotlight (and our hearts) once again with his sophomore album, Illuminate. Reflecting on his past two years of stardom, the singer-songwriter shows a more mature side of himself with edgier lyrics and themes. The album’s lead single, “Treat You Better”, and its music video speaks out against domestic violence while “Ruin” sees Shawn trading his acoustic for an electric guitar. A heartthrob and feminist with a kind soul? We’re definitely keeping our eyes on this one. Illuminate is due for release on September 23 on iTunes for $12.98.

Vanessa Fernandez, aka Miss Vandetta, shares with us her fave local releases. Vanessa Fernandez is the programming head of Lush99.5FM and 987FM. Follow her on Instagram (@msvandetta) or find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/msvandetta.

ISLAND-01 EP This former frontman of Monster Cat went to the US and returned with a new approach towards music that's highly conceptual, thought-provoking and exciting for the music scene. He presents a perspective I haven’t seen here before.

ARCADE There’s something special about their retrocontemporary sound that is impressively refined for such a young band. The music is incredibly catchy and I think they really resonate with younger audiences in Singapore. There’s this group has a lot of potential.

If you love Korean rap/hip-hop, and follow shows like Show Me The Money and Unpretty Rapstar religiously, you need to give Scene Stealers a listen. This EP is a collaboration between AOMG label mates Jay Park and Ugly Duck, and boy, these rappers go hard. Remember to turn your amps all the way to up to 11 to do the tracks justice.

Gentle Bones

GENIUSES & THIEVES He did something completely different from the folksy singer-songwriter vibe he’s known for. With this new direction of dabbling with electronica, he does something progressive while retaining pop sensibilities and reaching out to a mass audience. 124 SEPTEMBER 2016

Spotlight on

Gone Viral

THIS MONTH

As much as the Internet wants to make you lose faith in humanity sometimes (just a glance at the comments section of most news outlets is enough), it’s also a source of much LOLs. Here are some of our favourite local viral content.

DON’T MISS…

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY PSA These have got to be the Worst. Wedding. Photos. Ever. Singaporean bride Jaclyn receives her wedding photos from her bridal studios, only to see supremely unflattering shots of herself and her guests. Since there’s no use crying over spilt milk, she uploaded the worst of the lot onto Facebook without naming or shaming the bridal boutique so that everyone on the Internet could have a good laugh. GLADIATOR GROOMSMEN On the other end of the spectrum, one lucky bride and her sisters saw a bunch of ripped gladiators show up at the door for the gatecrashing ceremony. If anybody in that groom’s party is reading this, consider this your official invitation to join CLEO’s Most Eligible Bachelors next year (no seriously, call us).

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping We can’t help but think that this looks suspiciously like a jab at Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never – and we freaking love it. It’s produced, written by, and starring Andy Samberg as an obnoxious pop star named Conner4Real, so you can expect his signature brand of slapstick humour all over this film. His lead single in this fictional universe? A song that calls the Mona Lisa an “overrated piece of sh*t” and “the original basic b*tch”, amongst other things. We’re definitely watching this for the LOLs. ANDY’S FATHER Ah, the anti-gambling campaign from our government that got its 15 minutes of fame on Jimmy Fallon. And as luck would have it, Germany performed really well, and eventually went on to win the 2014 World Cup.

Opens August 25, 2016.

BATMAN BIN SUPARMAN One of our earlier viral sensations, this dude’s identification card made the rounds on the Internet because it almost seemed like he was named after two of DC’s biggest superheroes. He made the news again in late 2013 for theft, housebreaking and drug abuse. [insert sad face emoji]

Love in the Moonlight

Who: Park Bo Gum, Kim You Jung, Jin Yong, Chae Soo Bin. When: Premieres on August 15, available on Viu every Tuesday and Wednesday. What: Ah, the good ol’ gender switcheroo. Set in the Joseon era, Kim You Jung plays Hong Ra On, a cross-dressing girl who gives dating advice to men. She eventually catches the attention of the Crown Prince (Park Bo Gum), and we’re guessing they end up falling in love? Love in the Moonlight is streaming on viu.com and the Viu app (with subtitles) for free. Upgrade to Viu Premium to catch the latest episodes first and get unlimited downloads for offline viewing.

Bridget Jone’s Baby

Oops, she did it again. Now in her forties, Bridget Jones is still keeping a diary, albeit a digital one saved onto her iPad. She’s also broken up with Mark Darcy since the events of the last film and is now seeing Jack, played by McDreamy – sorry, Patrick Dempsey. But alas, she bumped into Darcy again by chance, and one thing led to another and now she’s pregnant. Only problem is, she isn’t sure whether Jack or Darcy’s the father. Uh oh. Opens September 15, 2016.

Grain On What can we say? We Asians love our grains. Get your fill at our favourite spots.

Miam Miam As far as comfort food goes, nothing can beat a bowl of soft and fluffy, piping hot rice. Miam Miam’s new range of rice bowls hit the spot with sautéed Japanese rice that’s evenly coated with flavourful special sauce. Add on your choice of protein, including shogayaki pork, $15.90, seared barramundi fillet, $16.90, or glazed teriyaki chicken, $14.90, for a hearty and delicious meal that’s sure to satisfy. We recommend the chicken – the teriyaki sauce, Wafu tofu, and thin slices of cucumber and radish make for an amazing harmony of flavours in your mouth. Craving something sweet after all that umami flavour? If you’re a big fan of sesame paste, you have to try the Kuro Goma Souffle, $10.80. Who knew black sesame seed would work so well in an airy souffle? Miam Miam is at #02-14 Bugis Junction. Tel: 6837 0301

The Populus We usually associate cafes with brunch, but The Populus is somewhere we would bookmark for a hearty dinner too. The Teriyaki Salmon Donburi, a common option you’d find at food courts, is surprisingly tasty. At $18.50, this bowl stands out with perfectly seasoned Japanese rice, flavourful furikake and mentaiko, and a piece of perfectly cooked salmon. The onsen egg is very Instavidworthy too. If you want something fancier, go for the Wagyu Beef Grain Bowl, $24, which comes with thyme-seared wagyu beef on a bed of quinoa, bulgur wheat and pearl barley – healthy and definitely worth every penny.

Tucked away in a corner of Duxton road, Ninja Bowl specialises in donburi-inspired single-bowl dishes. Highlights include the Noka Bowl, $14, which features slices of beef cheek braised in veal jus and soy sauce for 24 hours. The tender meat melts in your mouth, and is accompanied by a medley of roasted pinenuts, semi-dried tomatoes and baby corn. If you’d like some carbs to go with your protein-packed bowl, you can choose add-ons such as Ninja Rice (a blend of Japanese rice, brown rice and seaweed flakes) and Orzo Pasta (rice-shaped pasta tossed with honey, mustard, miso and chilli). Shiberty Bakes

Baker and blogger Jessica Loh, better known by her online moniker Shiberty, turned her dream of opening her own café into a reality with Shiberty Bakes. Nestled along the charming Owen Road, the café serves a range of mouthwatering sweet treats made with heart. Highlights include the Shiberty Toast, which comes in three flavours: Classic (served with berries and maple honey), Rocher (served with a medley of chocolate biscuits and ice cream), and Matcha (which comes with cookies drizzled with white chocolate sauce). We also love the Gourmet Waffles, which come in five mouth-watering flavours: Churros, Brownie, Buttermilk, Red Velvet and Charcoal. And don’t forget to try the signature macarons, which come in six delectable flavours including Honey Lavender, Ferrero, Red Velvet, and flavour of the moment, Salted Egg.

WELCOME to the

West 1

DAY

Get your spin on at Soul Cycle.

Start the morning: Kick off your WeHo trip with a spin class at Soul Cycle (soul-cycle.com) on the Sunset Strip. This indoor cycling craze has celebrities hooked – Lady Gaga even held her 26th birthday party in the chain’s West Hollywood studio. You’ll ride custom-made exercise bikes along to music in a candlelit room while instructors inspire you to “live your dreams”. You won’t want to be a convert, but you’ll leave as one.

Next: After class, grab a green juice at Earthbar (earthbar.com) as you stroll along the Sunset strip. Go shopping if you’re up for it; you’ll find H&M mixed in with more pricey stores. Stop by Book Soup (booksoup. com) and pick up a holiday read, then head to the Drybar (thedrybar.com) to spruce up your tresses. They don’t cut or colour – blowies are their business – so you’ll look the part of a Hollywood star. @CLEOsg

It’s the hippest 5km2 in LA, packed with local haunts frequented by your fave A-listers. CLEO breaks down five ways to spend five days in West Hollywood so you can live the #celeblyf too. Dinner:

If you dine at foodie hotspot Eveleigh (theeveleigh.com), chances are it will be the best meal of your trip/life. Owned by two Aussies, the food is modern, and this eatery marries the best of Australian and LA cuisine. The Treat your tummy at Eveleigh. rustic main dining area is under a retractable roof, and you might think you were in the Outback if it weren’t for the LA billboards in view. Definitely a must-visit. www.CLEO.com.sg

2

DAY

Kick off the day: No trip to Hollywood would be complete without exercising some credit cardio. Start on Melrose Avenue; it’s lined with stores that Kendall and co. frequent (check out style favourites Rag & Bone for their iconic all-American denim). Next, go to N Robertson Boulevard to empty out your wallet at boutiques like 3.1 Phillip Lim and Christian Louboutin.

Lunch: Worked up a bit of an appetite? Cecconi’s (cecconiswesthollywood.com)

on the corner of Melrose Ave and N Robertson Boulevard serves modern Italian at its best. Sample their cocktails and do a scan of the room for celebs (“Oh hi, Ellen. Are you hanging out with Drake?”).

Chill: Wind down some more at the Kinara Skincare Clinic & Spa (kinaraspa.com) near Cecconi’s. Try their red-carpet facial and you’ll be ready for your close-up.

Evening: Now you’ve treated yo’self WeHo style, go to The Church Key

(thechurchkeyla.com) for a tasty time. Plus, Zomato crowned this joint one of LA’s top 10 restaurants for star-spotting. Watch the sun set at Skybar.

4

DAY

DAY

Cecconi's Instaworthy Italian food

To do: Combine the LA hike with star-gazing of

the non-celeb variety by taking a stroll through Griffith Park and up to the iconic Observatory. The hike takes about two to three hours, and only requires a moderate fitness level. Along the way up is the best place to spot the Hollywood sign. Once you make it to the top, you can see the city sprawling in Griffith every direction. Observatory

Wine and dine: Just off the Strip is the hidden oasis that is the bl (sunsetmarquis.com). Have dinner at the hotel’s restaurant Cavatina, where you’re likely to see a famous face. After your meal, visit Bar 1200 in the hotel’s lobby. It’s dimly lit and intimate, and if you’re lucky, you’ll run into one of the musos laying down tracks in the famous NightBird recording studio, which is housed in the basement below the hotel. Fact: Britney Spears, Pharrell, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, to name a few, have all recorded here.

In the AM: WeHo’s

neighbor is the glitzier Beverly Hills. Take a riding tour of the suburb with Bikes and Hikes LA (bikesandhikesla.com) and cruise past the mansions, celeb homes and landmarks, like the pastel pink Beverly Hills hotel. The tour highlight is Greystone Park and Mansion, which is worth the steep hill climb for the amazing views of LA (plus, it’s a fun way to burn off last night’s epic culinary activities). Loads of movies were shot here, from X-Men to Rory’s school on Gilmore Girls. After you’re done ’gramming, cruise back down the hill along the postcard-esque palm tree-lined streets.

Eat: Hit the brakes and refuel at Gracias Madre (graciasmadreweho. com). You can’t go to LA without eating Mexican food, and this serves some of the best. While it’s a vegan eatery that uses sustainable and organic ingredients (they grow their own corn), meat lovers won’t be disappointed, thanks to fare like tempeh chorizo and coconut bacon. Night: Start your evening at the

Mondrian Hotel (mondrianhotel. com), where you can grab a drink with a view at WeHo hotspot Skybar. Once the sun sets, walk to iconic venues like Whisky A Go Go (whiskyagogo.com) and The Viper Room (viperroom.com).

DAY

5

Brunch: Start the morning the WeHo way by soaking up the

sun with brunch and a poolside mimosa. There are plenty of hotels with swim-up bars you can visit. Our fave? The Standard (standardhotels.com) with its blue AstroTurf deck.

Snack: Stop by Connie & Ted’s (connieandteds.com) and

sample New Englandstyle seafood. Try the lobster roll or chowder; they’re the standouts. After you’re done dining, head to nightclub and performance space DBA (dbahollywood.com); it’s the home of For The Record, a live-music show inspired by your fave movies – think Baz Luhrmann and Quentin Tarantino films.

Last drinks: You can’t beat Now Boarding (nowboardingla.com) for a post-show nightcap. Inspired by retro-airline style, the décor will take you back. Visit visitwesthollywood.com for more information.
