URBAN SPORTS NETWORK DESIGN Graduation Project | 2015.09 - 2016.05 with Shan-Wen

This is my senior’s year project. My partner and I found out that the master plan developed by government did not built up the trend of exercising effectively. Hence the goal of our project is to fix this plan and relate it more to exercising. We hope this plan would ultimately change people’s sporting habit. Unlike space design, I’d say it’s more like a model of construction site.

02. Hsinchu City Stadium [This program has been chosen as a model for planning and design]

The stadium can be used not only for professional sport events, but also as residents’ exercise and leisure resort. Without hesitation, we set up this stadium as the development center.

03 Hsinchu prison and Zhungzheng baseball field renewal plan In the original urban renewal program, government tried to renovate the low used baseball field, and removed Hsinchu prison to another place. Hoping to make this site a potential sports resort. Existing green space

vacant, low utilization of space

[ Peripheral potential spots ]

By far, Hsinchu does not have a systematic overall plan for sports development. This explains why the city’s ethos of exercising doesn’t take hold (as you can see in the top diagram). Most of the citizens are not willing to go exercising due to the surrounding limitation, not to mention of developing the habit of exercising. Therefore, we propose "Hsinchu Big Sports Program" - a sports developing vision.

"Hsinchu Big Sports Program" proposes three potential sites to becoming the sports development center. Our project “Hsinchu Prison and Zhongzheng Baseball Field", which connects the main site with its surrounded open space, is chosen among them. We hope to improve the quality of sporting sites in Hsinchu City, and to further build up a sporting trend. This plan is set as the starting point to turn Hsinchu into a “sports city” and even to become a demonstration program for other cities. Road Investigation

The original site has a narrow alley and ditch. The width of the road is inconsistent, which leads to less traffic flow. Roadside parking is the most common scene in this street. The plan is to transform the place into a not disturbed and high-quality jogging route.

With ditch and drainage tubes, rainwater is allocated in layers of water tanks. Then it flows directly into plant filter system. Instead of hiding the ditches, we mix them into ecology and landscape. It will be a wonderland that people want to stay.

1. Use the jogging track as the planning core. "Green" serves as a visual guide to create a comfortable jogging space through planting. 2. Preserve historic buildings, reintroduce new activities into the site. 3. New sports, such as physical exercise, jogging, walking the dog, etc are more close to the living habits for the general residents.

Hsinchu Municipal Prison This prison had been constructed since 1891 by now, and the government is planning to remove it from the center of Hsinchu city. Trying to rebuild the place into some kind of museum to memorize the contribution of the prison, and put commercial buildings in to it, in order to benefit the citizens to have a better living environment.

Total Area : 106761.6 m2 Location : 120°57'32.73" East , 24°48'17.26" North Population : 43.47 million (Hsinchu City) Total Building Footprints : 75957 m2 Total Green Surface : 16862 m2

Research + Analysis By the

time passed by, the urban population has continously expanded so does the range. More and more natural areas had been ruined or turned into residential uses, commercial buildings aand industrial factories. Somehow the buildings are also rotting at the same time we grown up. There are some of the buildings which are no longer safe or suitable for people to live in. And it is the time we have to start to deliberate upon how to deal with the circumstance - ruins increasing and exterior space decreasing (especially natural space) .

The topic of the competition “The Retranslation of open space in a city” inspired us to find the elements that are no longer suitable in the modern cities. Or it is the time for the common concept of open space to be renewed?

Separate the elements of cell, plant various plants, bushes into the rest areas, and refurniture the buildings around the site into relaxing and commercial uses. Combining people’s life into this model project shows that it isn’t that hard for us to make a reuse of these inadequate buildings.

09

In this particular era, the development of a city has become to a transitional stage. Too much inadequate old build-

ings flooded inside cities however they can’t be fully functional used and cost too much to demolish them. My partner and I started to think “Is there any possibility that can reuse these remains into giving spaces back to the citizens by only slighty adjusting them?”. How to combine those abandoned buildings with the open spaces such as parks, plazas and playgrounds. We should never under estimate their values and the possibility of giving them another life again.

By decomposing the construction, the prison can be tramsformed into an opened and delighted playground. As to the waterfall which is the most spiritual element. While people go through it, the rinse, which symbolize that they wash out all the daily tiredness and pressure, and a whole new fresh life is upcoming.

Water falls, is how the transformation works. Instead of locking human beings inside the

walls, it would be much more better that keeping them get in touch with the natural element-water, for example.

BREATH AGAIN - HULUDUN WATERWAY Reshaping Urban Waterway | 2015. 05 - 06 with Shan-Wen

After the merge of Taichung City and its county, the Fengyuan area is facing the crisis of marginalization. Even though the administrative and commercial center have been transfered, but Fengyuan still retain their own unique culture which is not replaced yet. As long as the local residents work together, Fengyuan can be a thriving and prosperous city again. This design plans a great vision building upon the reconstruction of Huludun waterway, inspiring the residents to arouse their pride of being a member of Fengyuan, and furthur gather the consensus of the residents in order to make dedications back to Fengyuan.

History + Present engyuan has been gradually di ered from the hustle and bustle city. ut the elder generation of engyuan people also began to recall the former era that the waterway gave to them which has always accompanied by the growth of the day. Since the site has no longer being as the economic center of Taichung, it is the time to reconsider opening up the waterway again in order to transform the local economic and bring the memories bac to engyuans.

The concept of the overall planning and designing are followed by each person’s life of Fengyuan. In the hope of letting foreign tourists to understand the beauty and characteristics of Fengyuan people, my partner and I map out a whole series of reshaping plan. Furthermore, we hope that this plan can stimulate the local residents to be pride as being a Fengyuan people, also converge the consensus, and work together to make a better surrounding. The overall planning is divided into four areas and the section idea is taken from the four stages of life - children stage, adolescent stage, adult stage, family stage.

1. Planning reasons: The left side is the Fengyuan elementary school so the primary school students will go through this river everyday. Opening the cluvert will let the relationship between children and river become much more closer. 2. Planning objectives: Fengyuan preserves rich historical memories. The elders’ memories in childhood and all those game times are no longer being seen in this river. This part of design is meant to evoke such a memory. And the atmosphere is planned to be lively, full of change.

Project Visions and Positioning Huludun waterway has many childhood memories of Fengyuan people. Such important river should never be buried down under a thick cement but should be more active on planning and management. " Huludun waterway promotion union ", an urban renewal organization, they planned a great vision for the future of the Huludun Culvert. The waterway positions as a recreational area because of its location is at the city center where has bundant local historical background and a good business environment. Based on the above importance, our planning visions and positioning are as follows. Image - the harmony between man and nature.

Create the exclusive "the third place" Integrate sightseeing, leisure, ecology and history.

As the first part of the project, it provides an important function that is to purify the cluvert. And the plants filter system that help to purify the water are also able to rehabilitate the birds. At the middle of this section, is the ecological education part which combines the elementary school’s curriculum helps children to understand more about the knowledge of ecological system.

This section represents how did the Fengyuan people make a living in the past before the merge of Taichung city. Wooden working made by Huludun people was famous for a while. As the time passed, it is no longer being talked by people nowadys. My partner and I plan to operate a square for being as a teaching area for people to have the opportunity to learn the woodworking knowledge. Every weekend there will be some masters teaching skills and knowledges of woodwoorking.

Family stage The ďŹ nal section of this design, family stage, brings a stable and calm ending for this river. By giving back the lands to the nature and encourage the residents to plant along the river walk. It provides a soft and quiet atmosphere for people to relax and ramble through the side of the river.

SHILIN STATION EXTERNAL SPACE DESIGN Rendezvous space design | 2015.02 - 03

To most of the people, Shilin station is nothing more than a transportation spot. To the commuting groups, the station is just an aisle to pass by. Everyday about 6 millions of people enter this station, but barely none of them would stop for a minute. The reason is that the surrounding is too boring to stay, not the passersby aren’t available. I plan to reconstruct the station by combining the history, eco-function and other valued elements in order to exhibit the beauty of Shilin station.

Shilin Metro Station The name of “Shilin” in chinese culture symbolizes that it is a place where highly educated people gathered. And there is no exception in Taiwan also. The name makes Shilin being constructed with many educational institutions such as elementary, junior high, senior high schools, even to universities. And that makes this station become particularly important to the students and the residents to remain harmony instead of affecting to each others.

Total Area : 4213 m2 Location : 121°31'34.42" East , 25°05'36.73" North Population : 28.9 million (Shilin District) Total Building Footprints : 125 m2 Total Green Surface : 522m2

N

Research + Analysis In order to achieve the goal of making balance of the “Traffic jam” between the students and the residents, I make a deep survey about the routes they went. Classify the uses of the buidings around the station so that it can be much easier to predict where people would stay and gather. At the north of the site, most of whom gathering around are students and the residents (especially after 6:00pm). As to the south, most of the people were just passing by, buying foods and finished them before entering the station.

Zone B

Considering the need for the residents nearby, it is important to provide a plaza that combines with their daily activities. Based on the history of the railroad, recalling the memory by establishing the biking line, which helps the residents take the advantage of riding bike to the station, during the riding they can also enjoy the views and the history. The platform in the middle is meant to be a communicational place for students and the local residents. Students can proceed their activities and the residents can exercise or having communication with their neighbors. And the plants are irrigated by the water from the south - zone A.

Zone B

Planting plan

Biking plan

Zone B The arrangement of “Biking route” is based on the original north train route which is no longer existing. Put the sleeper flattern so that the riders can easily pass on. As for the “Citizen plaza”, the place is meant to be a connecting zone between the residents and the students. Lots of students will have their break time or dinner time there so do the residents. It is important that separate the space but not totally divid it. Both have security and their breathing space.

On the south of the site, which has to be much more function than the North one. At this part of the design, I use the following elements like water and lights to lead the crowds ďŹ nding their ways to have a rest or pass through rather than crumbling together. By using liner arrangment design at the edge can intrigue people to move fast and not block on the way. At the middle of zone A, I plan to settle the water recycling system in order to combine the recreational and functional uses.

Zone A

Lighting plan

Water recycling plan

Take the meaning of the name - Shilin, the source of knowledge, the fountain is designed to rinse and recycle the water day after day in order to bring the sober and joy to people. This project is not only dealing the present problems but also revivng the energy and the enthusiasms. The place would no longer just be as an aisle but a place people can relief themselves.

Zone A

The water system have two signiďŹ cant functions ; one is that can purify the rain water and give back to earth, second, the pool in the middle of zone A, can bring people staying there but not just passing by. In Chinese culture, water sometimes means memoring the past and looking forward to the future. And that is my point. 22

Urban Planning Course | 2014.10-12

HAnddrawing - Community Planning and Design

This project finished when I was being as an exchange student in Nanjing University. The goal is to plan and design a whole new community and must have basic daily functional infrastructure inside such as, kindergarten, elementary school. community center, liberary and so on. I also have to mind the security and environment laws in order to sure that every building gets their sunshine and the road widths for firefighting. Putting commerence in to the community which is also important because by doing so, there will be much more communication happen between the neighborhoods. I surrounded the site with trees and plants cause these stuffs can bring slience and security to the residents. And as you can see, I also manage the street level carefully so that the commerical stores won’t disturb the slience. The down sketching is my vision image of the center commerical street. People gathering around having cafe and chatting with neighbors, these are what I think that the current modern community lack of.

I put a lot of efforts on serching what are the best plants for gardening. Compare the seasons so that I can differ the flower colors and make the garden much more colorful. As to the space design, I even modify the house in order to create the atmosphere I want. It brings me a lot of joy during choosing the plants and the designing the house.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography helps me satisify how to perpetuate my memories and treasure moments and as well a need of feeling aesthethic pleasure through composing a scene. So far, I use instagram to file these.
