Drown the Damage in the Noise MARAWI CITY, at rest in the farthest north shores of Lake Lanao, was perturbed on a Tuesday, May 23, 2017. The antecedents of wreaking havoc are sympathizers of the ISIL; recognized as one of the most “successful” militant groups up to date, sequestering considerably huge parts of Iraq and Syria. Clearly, the Maute group ought to do the same — waving proudly the flag of their paradigm. Seeing this exhibits a national crisis, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, on that same day, declared martial law on the entire island of Mindanao effectively for 60 days, suspending the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus (read Proclamation 216). At present, the extension of martial law has been approved until December 31, 2017. Upon implementation of martial law and the approval of its extension, the country dealt with plausive and disbelieving remarks fusilladed from the Filipino people. The debate on whether the implementation, and now the extension, is the right thing to do or not remains loud. And no one is to deny anyone their right to intellectual discourse. But there’s more than just the discourse. Conspiracies have emerged, anomalies have unfolded, and fallacious agenda were propagated. Some of these may have proven their point to have a share of space on the spotlight. But aren’t there more important things at stake here? Matters that need immediate attending? Listen to the reverberating grief of the families who lost their loved ones in this rebellion. Soldiers who pledged their full allegiance and lives to our country, to protect and defend her and the existing sovereign laws, are fighting relentlessly while being killed in the same manner. Trapped civilians in the city have

2

been rescued but some weren’t as the terrorists see it fit that you either die in the warfare or by their very own nefarious hands. Incomplete families on Christmas, most tears in fervent prayers are to pour on Undas, and every year after that for the rest of the lives of the ones left behind. Hundreds of people who are missing pieces of someone’s puzzle will forever demand themselves to be sought and missed. Education took a toll on the city. Who can focus when bombs are falling from the sky, gunfires are gloriously charged and exchanged, and at any given moment, the life you are expecting to flourish through education can be taken away from you for an obtuse extremist cause? Thousands of students from the city have been enrolled in 8 different regions to continue their pursuit of learning despite what has befallen them—a commendable action despite the unwelcomed situation. The absolute gain in this mayhem is loss – a substantial scathe to our motherland – and to undulate the reprehensible repercussions of this crisis, the nuisances to the already chaotic scene, is unforgivable. Even if it is still threatened with ferocity, we relish the safety that we are experiencing. There’s a possible retaliation from the supporters of the despicable but we have faith in justice to vindicate the stricken and strike the responsible. The people on the frontlines – our president, the senate, the Supreme Court, and our military and police forces – are still evaluating on the ways, and thus firmly enforcing means, to completely purge the nation of these rebels. We are going to commit to resilience from this lugubriousness with Marawi’s rehabilitation as the utmost priority.

ukSU integrates a new and a systematic collection of organization fees upon the start of the 1st semester enrollment, June, of the S.Y 2017-2018 developed by a team of Information Technology students as a thesis output for their Capstone Project and the conceptualization initiated by the OSS Dean, Dr Lalevie C. Lubos, for an organized and unified system of USG fee collection. Students’ Information Management System, abbreviated as “SIMS”, is a system designed to organize students’ information, mainly for university related attendance, violations, and SBO payment transactions. The collection scheme of SBO and organization fees are no longer done manually but are processed through the use of this system with computerized receipts, free from the labour-intensive manner of giving out proof of payments. The summary of payments per college is made available not only to monitor the money collected per college SBO but also to check if the collection data per organization coincides with the system’s data. Generally, it is aimed at transparency

Bautista, on the other hand, denied these accusations saying that Patricia tried to extort from him P620-M with terms and conditions for her settlement. He refused to give the said amount, even adding that her wife “ransacked” and “stole” gadgets, financial documents, and money from him in their condo. He even said that his wife has been living an “extravagant and ostentatious” life herself. Patricia was said to have been wanting a legal separation since 2013, and was only asking for negotiations about the settlement of the properties. Given Bautista’s position in the national government, the people are now questioning his credibility, especially in the 2016 National Elections. However, Bautista said that the 2016 Elections has been the “cleanest” one so far. Chinese Paper on Embryo Engineering Splits Scientific Community BY R AÑEL G. BANDRIA

“We may soon be able to edit people’s DNA to cure diseases like cancer, but will lead this to designer babies? If so, bioethicist G Owen Schaefer argues that china will lead the way.”

S

hould the parent alter the future children’s genes to produce a competitive, smarter, and even a better-looking child? Modern technologies, specifically science, bring prospects to this impossibility yet may be brought closer to reality with science. It has been quite baffling a few years ago about “an international debate raging over the ethics of enhancing human capabilities with the biotechnologies such as the so-called smart pills, brain implants and gene editing”. Thus, this became an overall discussion through the advent of the CRISPR-cas9 gene editing tool—a tool that which help improve traits like intelligence, athleticism, and even the moral reasoning of a person. On the other hand, “government funding led China to be the first to edit the genes of human embryos using the CRISPR-cas9 tool in 2015. The Chinese has also been known in leading the way in using CRISP-cas9 for non-germ line genetic modifications of human tissue cells for use in treatment of cancer patients.” The declaration that a Chinese team had altered the genetics of a human embryo for the first time has ignited a firestorm of controversy around the world and renewed recent calls for a moratorium on any attempt to establish a pregnancy with such an engineered embryo. Yet, it has also underscored that although scientists are united in their opposition to any clinical application of such embryo manipulation, they are split on the value of basic research that involves genetically modifying human embryos. Apparently, there are two primary factors that contribute to emergence of genetic enhancement technologies. First, to research development of technologies. Second, the popular opinion to support of their deployment. However, numerous surveys among Western populations have

Vol. 1 No. 1

1st Semester S.Y. 2017 - 2018

found significant opposition to many forms of human enhancement. Furthermore, experts believe that genetic enhancement is more likely to emerge out of China. “In China, genetic enhancement may be linked to more generally approving attitudes toward old-fashioned programs such as selective abortion of human fetus with severe genetic disorders, though more research is needed to fully explain the difference.” Are we now on the brink of a brave new world of genetically enhanced humanity? “One day,” the author once said. There is even an interesting wrinkle: “it’s reasonable to believe that any seismic shift toward genetic enhancement will not be centered in western countries like U.S. or the UK, where many modern technologies are pioneered. Instead, genetic enhancement is more likely to emerge out in china.” Designer Babies A broader review of public opinion studies found significant opposition in countries like Germany, U.K., and the U.S. for selecting the best embryos through implementation based on their intellectual capacity and the appearance itself. Hence, several researchers found out a possible concern; certain experts who say that the tinkering with the human genome will propagate significant risks. These risks may be openly accepted in treating medical conditions but may be less considered in terms of enhancing non-medical traits like intelligence and appearance since at the same time, ethical objections often arise. Scientists nowadays can be seen as the “playing God”—altering nature. Moreover, there are also worries about the inequality; innovation of a modern generation of enhanced individuals who are advantageous over the others. One factor that seemed to be difficult

upon achieving the opposition is the political factor. Politicians nowadays are most likely fond of controversies especially in implementing controversial projects and more likely to restrict them. With that, there is an author who said “Countries like China which lack the democratic systems are less likely to be sensitive towards others’ opinion, and the public officials who play and outsize in shaping the public’s opinion towards the alignment with the government priorities. By contrast, international norms are arguably emerging against the genetic enhancement but in the other arena, China has proven willing to reject the international norms in order to promote its own interests by implementing the genetic enhancement.” — Schaefer (2016) The organizers of a global summit in 2015 concluded that altering early embryos could be done as part of the careful laboratory research. However, scientists and society continue to grapple with ethical questions surrounding the technology including the concept of “designer babies”. “It would be irresponsible to edit human sperm, eggs, or embryos in a way that leads to pregnancy,” said the summit chair Noble Laureate David Baltimore of the California Institute of Technology. On the contrary, tools to edit the genes inside living cells—including a cheap and easy-touse one known as CRISPR/Cas9—have the potential to transform Biology. By using them, scientists may be able to create treatments or cures for diseases, such as sickle-cell anemia, HIV, and Cancer.” If this will be continued, then we will see. The battle against technologies and public opinions will surely be a subject for debate. But for now, it appears that China will hold the decision whether to continue the said genetic enhancement for human embryos.

For countless times, we have always heard negative remarks about the way our security guards performed their duties. Various comments of dissatisfactions were sent to our ears stressing that guards were too strict. Others would say that guards have their list of exceptions; you may enter the university without wearing your uniform as long as your clothes fit nicely on you or the guards and you are friends and a hint of smile could already save you from trouble. In the verge of these mishaps, misunderstandings may arise. We cannot escape to wonder onto why there are cases like these. Favoritism, perhaps? Or just a mere cat and mice affair? While I am fascinated by those students who prudently sneaked from the sight of the guards wearing their “ootd’s”, I cannot just simply give them my regards. It is upsetting to think that while there are many who follow the rules cautiously — others have the nerve to violate these rules. Yet how do we react when by chance we were told to stop and were interrogated by guards? The problem is, many of us answer arrogantly, bald-facedly and irreverently. Such a terrible attitude, isn’t it? Well, why are we violating the rules if we hate to be reprimanded in the first place? School policies were not created to create gaps between the administration and students. The intention is to solely provide regulations that will serve as the means of unity and order. The strict implementation of school policies is a way of emphasizing that the administration has a well-founded execution of the rules and to follow the school’s policies is the least that we can do. The guards, as humans as they are may also have lapses. Likewise, we students also have many. However, the thing that we should always do is to have the proper response. Their job is to keep the order. Ours is to follow. So, act professional.

Mabuhay; Annyeonghaseyu?

Department of Education‘s latest program, the K-12 curriculum, caught the attention of everybody. This curriculum focuses on strands where each strand has its field of concentration in which students can cherrypick according to their preference. They have their own design of courses already assimilated towards the field. The program already started embroidering its mark in our educational system and aims to produce high class graduates from the senior high students. The main target of the K-12 program is the enrollment to employment system designed to cater the senior high school students. The enhancement of our educational system is another remarkable achievement of the previous administration who strived hard to amplify the education we currently have in the Philippines. But a challenge is in sight: how is the present administration going to deal with the situation regarding job placements of the graduates of K-12 and the RBEC program when the employment probability here in our country is in minute chances? Where will we put the graduates of the two different programs? Are we prepared of the impact? What can we do? Our country could not even efficiently provide work that would pay enough to sustain one’s family needs. As a matter of fact, the first consignments of graduate have chosen to work overseas due to the lack of employment in our country. However, the pragmatic attitude of the Filipinos can be another key to bring it up to the top. Philippines can rise up to its highest peaks of improvements like the other countries did. The move towards a better educational system is a kick start to improve the qualities of our economic manpower. But the question is; where are we going to place the graduates? 2 years from now we will have our first set of K-12 graduates. Hopefully by that time, we have slayed the obstacles of the transition period. However, the moment we overcome the risks after taking this untimely dive into the program in hopes for a better future, does the hope of rising from the dive is nothing but surreal chances?

Peace starts within us— it is the mother of progress. It is also an essential element in attaining development towards success. Hence, I love the idea of having a peaceful world. With this, I recognize the impossibility for sameness. I can’t even imagine life without conflict—no thievery, no murder, no violence. Yes, I aspire that. But will it happen? Perhaps. One day. Yet the country’s struggle for freedom and democracy has been marked by violence and conflict resulting in considerable loss of lives and property. However, it has given the people strength and clarity of vision to continue to preserve democratic gains. Nowadays, people are seeking for world peace and it has been a lifelong goal of all countries. But there are several reasons why peace seems impossible to attain. First, in our situation today, conflicts have become inevitable and violent as ever. But why is there continuous stirring of trouble and animosity between countries? Isn’t it because instead of supporting each other we end up waging wars instead? And because people refusing to acknowledge, thus losing respect for human rights, we deviate from our usual conception of preserving one’s life. Second, people worldwide are inspired by their nation’s respective basic values: the dominance of individual independence, the idea of equal justice, and the aspiration of fair opportunities for every member of the society. At the same time, many people around the world disagree with some of our policies while others resent what they believe to be indifference to their plights. Isn’t it obvious that we cannot deal with every problem alone? The name peace was scripted on paper but was it peace itself? Now, people start to think that this goal in achieving peace is becoming more of a dream, an unattainable one. Despite several attempts to attain world peace they still haven’t penetrated chaos. However, our hope doesn’t end there. If we choose to unite, we can be one. Instead of practicing violence, instead of crafting selfish desires, and instead of individual independence, let us all agree between gaps in order to attain what we are seeking. World peace is necessary. But what is really the problem here? Is it the people’s attitude towards attaining it? The question is still left unanswered.

Inconveniently Convenient

1st Semester S.Y. 2017 - 2018

After burning an insane amount of energy on a homework for a minor subject [that greatly demands your soul], you decided to drive and pick up some jumbo fries and an extra-large cup of soft drink. But the voice box said, “We would need 20 minutes for the fries to be ready, ma’am. Are you willing to wait?” The considerate person that you are, you responded “No problem!” but your stomach rumbles in inconvenience to differ. All of us hunger for change. Whichever part of our lives that needs the only constant thing in this world, we want it and we want it bad. There will always be an insatiable desire to move forward because backwards is just scientifically impossible—the only obvious way to go is where the future is. Let us take for example the on-going construction of infrastructures in our university. While you try to make out the words coming from your instructor's mouth (because his voice is not loud enough to reach the back of the room), you get distracted because in addition to his surprisingly attractive physique, he also knows so much about the subject [and intelligence is very sexy indeed.] You snap out of your thoughts before it takes you to the altar where you both exchange I Dos. If you can only make out the words so you can jot it down in your trusty notebook. What is he saying? But all you hear is the unharmonious Clank! Clank! Clink! Clink! Clonk! In all seriousness, it is somehow inconvenient. But this was not overlooked by the administration. The constructions were carefully planned and the objectives and goals underlying the change and development is established to substantiate the intricate processes we’ve undergone. When we talk about safety, the administration ensures that upon working on these infrastructures, preventive and safety measures are always observed. Developments entail processes—ones that are never convenient. But let us always keep in mind that these inconveniences are impermanent but the state-of-the-art changes that our university is introducing to us are guaranteed to gratify its unrelenting endeavor of scholastic excellence and global competitiveness.

Lately, the word “fake news” has extremely been exhausted. Do you really know the meaning of "fake news"? It’s simple, fake news is defined as a media to fool people and It’s a real problem worldwide. Fake news is rampant in social media, it confuses people leading to misinformation, divisiveness, turmoil, hate, and even harm. It allures readers often for political agenda and financial gain. During the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, fake news clobbered stories and articles from major news companies. Stories like “Pope Francis shocks the world, endorses Donald Trump as president” hauled a paramount volume of Facebook engagements. But accordingly, Pope Francis never made a comment about the election. The Philippines, on the other hand, has also been hounded with fake news consisting mostly with politics related issues. A few high ranking government officials were even caught propagating and supporting half-truth and fake stories on social media. Ironic right? Okay, I know what you are thinking right now. Politics is not the only topic inclined to fake news. It can range from an array of conspiracy theories, hoaxes, sciences, bomb threats, calamities, exaggerated satire articles and even falsifying a whole news website. But fake news is never new! It's been rolling even before the millennium has started. Then here comes the internet supremacy. Shaking the earth to its core with its plethoric capabilities. Granting fake news the power to earn, harm, and spread wildly than ever before. Thankfully, Facebook and Google has been busy fighting against fake news. In our country, a senate bill has been filed to penalize any person or entity creating fake news. Unfortunately, there is no single bullet that could wipe this spuriousness despite the rapid advancement of technology. The best we can do is to stay vigilant and keep ourselves in lucid state. Like a contagious computer virus patiently waiting to infect other systems when triggered, so is fake news. So, check your sources, look at the publishing date, and cross check with reliable sources before you share. The beauty of social media is you control almost everything; from privacy, security, and even picking out the pages and friends you connect with. What you see depends on who you follow and the kind of content they share. If you think it’s unreliable, don’t share it. 9

OPINYON

“THERE should be no distinction between ‘mainstream’ and ‘indie’ films. Kasi kapag sinabi mo na na ‘indie vs. mainstream, it’s like saying that an indie can never go mainstream. The vision of the festival focuses on three factors: audience development, artistic excellence, and sustainability.”

OPINION

BY E A R L G U E N Q . PA DAYAO

OUR BIGGEST assumption is that see another war, and worse, it was a war

our country is a lot better now than before. People think we are heading towards the best direction and that we are graced by hope and progress. I beg to differ. We are no less damaged. We are no less chaotic than before. The age of heroes is long gone and we now live in a generation where the likes of Aguinaldo and Rizal are less likely to be found. Perhaps our priorities have shifted because we find life too convenient that we can sit back and relax. Let me remind you that 116 years ago, a 22-year-old Revolutionist was executed for defending the country. Young and idealistic like most college students, he is Captain Isabelo del Rosario. He was 18 when he joined the Katipunan, a period which majority of us still grapples with teenage crisis and our many break-ups. But we don’t talk about him, do we? We don’t talk about heroism anymore. We find it out-dated and boring. College students today talk about different things: probably ‘shot’ stories, DOTA victories, rigorous sex life or maybe sharing gym selfies on Facebook. We have to admit we’ve fallen too far to the point we measure our selfworth by the number of likes and heart reacts we get on Facebook. The Sad truth, isn’t it? People would say "Nah, we shouldn’t fret about the past". Wrong again. Yes, our wars in the past were already won. The fight for identity is won. The fight for democracy is won. We’ve had the victory our nation has dreamt of. But the challenge in past 100 years is keeping it that way. Yet we failed and failed miserably. As you can see, the Filipino nation lived to

amongst us. This war is peddled by the dark politics we live with. The Philippine politics today has never been shadier and grim since the Marcos era, they dubbed this the ‘Rule of Mindanaoans’ and they call it bliss of change. I doubt that. Well, it is true that it is inspiring to have a Mindanaoan President, a Mindanaoan Senate President and a Mindanaoan Speaker of the House. But it is never inspiring to see the proliferation of mass-murder more so the street execution of alleged drug runners, peddlers and lords. It is not inspiring to know that some gunman took justice into his own hands. It is not inspiring to see that Filipinos find these deaths as necessary sacrifices. I remain loyal to the law - guilty or not guilty, due process must be served. I thought our heroes died so that we could live in a time where we champion justice and peace? Yet again, we dragged ourselves back to the muds of injustice. I might say we do have a knack of getting ourselves into trouble. Friends, we live in a time of sociopolitical turmoil. Where the poor are targeted in this unjust and unruly War on Drugs and where justice is only for the rich and the powerful. I think we should fear the day when democracy and due process are reduced to mere topics we talk about in PolSci and law classes. We should fear but we should also never let that day come. We should never let power and greed shade over justice.

Perhaps it is high time to remind the government that it was the people who gave them power, the same people being unjustly executed in streets. It was the command of democracy that geared the country in empowering them, the same democracy that we have won and that we should maintain. Then again behind all these wars and political turmoil, we should answer only to honor but mind you the wounds of honor are self-inflicted. I say we retract our values, we retract the principles that the Filipino nation stands for. To aid you in that retracting, let me

I thought our heroes died so that we could live in a time where we champion justice and peace? highlight loyalty. Our loyalty to our President, Vice-President, and any politician ends where our loyalty to our country begins - simply because we should not reward their incompetence with blind loyalty. We should remind ourselves that we are not loyal to President Duterte, we are not loyal to VP Robredo and we are not loyal to any political character. We are loyal to the Filipino populace. It takes faith to believe in politicians, but it takes both faith and bravery to believe in the power of one’s nation. It takes commitment to fight for a politician, but it takes love and passion to fight for the cause of the State. We should always remind ourselves that the Filipino nation is ours to save and serve. Our loyalty should be with the people – the Filipino nation.

When drugs enter our body, there’s a biological, pathological process that alters the way in which the pleasure center, as well as other parts of the brain, functions. It generally explains why it’s addictive. Drugs are accesible and despite being illegal, using it is a norm. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) estimates 4.7 million drug personalities in the Philippines. Our president stood up and put efforts on War againts Drugs. They have finally met their match. In the midst of this war, there is a continous battle between doing things right vs. doing things the right things. There are a lot of issues in PDWD. It can be a vessel to abuse one’s power. It is like a double-edged sword. It could tempt one in authority whose acts can be abusive and contradictory to a person’s constitutional rights. What’s happening now is “Kung di madaan sa Santong Dasalan, daanin sa santong paspasan”. A government is to pave a future for it’s people.

how will the nation flourish if its people aren’t receptive to its change? What we need to do now is to play our part. Change starts in you. In us.

Addiction to illegal drugs inflicts serious damage to people. Accidents, crime, domestic violence, illness, lost opportunity, and reduced productivity are the direct consequences of substance abused. Illegal drugs are expensive but a lot of people even the millennial are using it because of the sensation and satisfaction brought about these chemicals, but the greatest cost of drug abuse is paid in human lives. PRRD’s war on drugs is a brave and aggressive initiative to drive solution to this big social problem. People and most media often highlight “man killed on war on drugs”. Often the main points are just the negative effects. The war on drugs is not just about getting those offenders, it’s also about focusing on letting these people get back on their feet and giving them the proper environment and tools in order for them to live normal lives once again by establishing rehabilitation center. I respect and acknowledge the right to life and equal protection of the laws to every Filipino as stipulated in the Philippines constitution of 1987, but we should also submit to authorities because the government really has the right to punish and penalize law offenders. And I also believe in the capabilities and advocacy of our President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, that whatever he plans and do are for the greater benefit of the general public.

“Go ahead and kill”, this line of President Duterte triggers thousands of Filipinos since he started his reign as the head of the country. Since Duterte became the president of the Philippines in June 2016, he has launched a war on drugs that was one thing he pointed out during his campaign. The war on drugs has resulted in the extra-judicial deaths of thousands of alleged drugs dealers and users in the entire country. Duterte believes that this is a major obstacles to Philippines’ economic and social progress. But for people to feel that it’s appropriate to kill drug users and dealers was once an issue on my part. Thousands of people were killed and mostly were considered as victims. Families made their cries, shouting for justice but in contrast others express their satisfaction on Duterte’s administration. Even through some people are concerned about these deaths, they support him as a president for his position on other issues. Now, where is the due process of law? There are no trials, so there is no evidence that the people being killed are in fact drug dealers or drug addicts. How disappointing it would be but that’s how they perform their jobs being in the authority.

WHAT’S YOUR STANCE ON

PRRD’S WAR ON DRUGS?

I commend the president for trying to solve a rampant problem that the past presidents didn't really tackle seriously, and for being brave doing so. He even publicly named the politicians who have been protecting drug operations, and exposed how big the problem is. The reality is, any president with good intentions has to start solving the nation's problems somewhere. In an ideal world, his approach against drugs may not be the perfect solution, but it is a solution nonetheless. Anyway, he is against the drug lords and drug pushers, not the drug abusers. I won't deny that war on drugs is brutal, and quite a few innocents civilians may be killed. People from modern society like talking human rights, law, and order and won't love what Duterte did in Philippine. However, does Philippine really have spare to practice law and order on drug dealers, while around few percent of its population are involved with drugs? In such

country, it is a necessary step. It is easy to complain the guy doing dirty work. And let us all remember that president Duterte is doing his best to resolve the problem.

If good plans are delegated to good people with sincere intentions, the outcome is expected to meet on the manner of how it's supposed to serve. Saving humanity from a contagious disease badly needs a prescription of the right medicine. An element of sacrifice paves its way in, scars etched within, hurt or pain, yest these all have to come along the way. We have seen and felt it. Things may seem to be confusing but if the infestation continues to spread, things could get worse than how we could imagine. Sometimes, it pays to take a different path to test the solutions. Sometimes, it takes more than courage to step forward and start a new battle in which you can never run away from. However, there's a sign that signals us to limit our self from stepping on the line where we're not supposed to cross. You can't keep on running towards horizons forever. I respect those who support President Duterte and also those who see his plans the other way. I believe that we are not supposed to die on anybody's hand; good or bad but either way, we perish at an assigned time. Like the concept called change, death is constant. The question is for what purpose did you end the life in this war? Nobody knows. Nobody will always know. At all times there are two sides of a coin. We are just in another battle of battles; a battle in which I think nobody actually wins.

A solution will never arise unless there is an existing problem that needs it. One of the many societal issues that Philippines are facing today is the war on drugs in which the government is taking its step towards solving it. Undeniably, this matter received a lot of comments from the public. Some supports the campaign but there are also some who criticizes it. For every decision that an individual chooses, there are drawbacks to consider, so does the government. These drawbacks might be an avenue for some to consider a certain decision as a mistake, but then, it is dependent on how the decision maker will overcome such. As a Filipino citizen, it is fair to support the government on the things that promotes betterment, but it is also our right to criticize if there are outcomes of a decision that doesn't serve its purpose. President Rodrigo R. Duterte's war on drugs isn't his war alone; it is a war of every Filipino. As an individual, it is our choice to which side will we take, this doesn't refer if a person is pro or con on the campaign, but this refers to what role a person will choose; the persona who contributes to the problem? Or the persona who will make himself part in solving the problem? Let us be wiser on which side we will choose.

“ COMFORTABLE LIFE FOR ALL” — the second State of the Nation Address (SONA) theme . For the second time, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (PRRD) flaunted his projects strengthened by his strong conviction and principles which deliberately shook the nation once again with mixed feelings of delight and enthusiasm of the ever-fervent president. He consistently emphasized the continuing fight against illegal drugs, which he believed to be the root cause of all evil and suffering. And although there were fatalities that served as the consequences of resistance, still, we cannot deny the fact that hundreds were correspondingly spared and freed from the abuse and aftermaths of it. PRRD’s declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao was assumedly the fastest way to fight rebellion because his people’s lives were at stake and the enemy of the state is already on an extreme rampage. And he did not undergo drastic measures like the immediate implementation of Martial Law to worsen the situation. Expectedly, when in battle, casualties will always exist thus PRRD assured assistance to the family of soldiers who were left behind in the line of duty; “It is not the peace of the dead but the peace of the living that we seek.” PRRD ascertained that there is definitely a need to raise tax for the common welfare of the country as well as for the benefit of the Filipino people. With a straight face, he also mentioned about the raise of taxes to compensate for those who are suffering financially and if not complied, he decisively said he will tax the persons liable to death. Of course, tax is the lifeblood of the government. PRRD does not only focus his view in the war on drugs but also in the economic expansion. It was also highly considered that sustainable development and protection of the environment must be the top priority by stopping exportation of raw materials in the Philippines into finished products. The reason would be because it is advantageous to other countries and disadvantageous to us. And the restoration, rehabilitation, and extended support to those affected by irresponsible mining should also be considered. Though the president created numerous misunderstandings like

abundant cussing and he absolutely does not reflect the need of presidential etiquettes. Definitely, action speaks louder than words. His promises always meet and sometimes exceed our expectations. Would you rather have a well-mannered and ever-formal yet ineffective president or a ‘cussing machine’ who made change possible? So just let the work do the talking. We are so engrossed with the idea that PRRD would influence the youth and other neighbouring countries negatively because of his occasionally tactless actions, unrefined manner of speaking, and rude humour but we somehow forget the fact that he is just being true to himself — evidence that he is firm in making decisions and a solid proof that he cannot be manipulated easily. He lives by his principles and convictions that currently led our country in a far better disposition and that’s what matters the most. There is no such thing as perfection and what we need is change. Our president has myriad of things to do in order to fully implement all the projects and visions he has and we definitely have to give him time. He may broke the record as the most informal president in Philippine history but he also broke the record to bring about change that we need — the eradication of illegal use of drugs, more emphasis in economic progression, and the positive view of Martial Law, to name just a few. So why go against the head of our nation? That would only bring misery and disorganization. And interminably, a man will struggle to build something without the help of others therefore we should cooperate in any way conceivable. Absolutely, he adheres accordingly to the due process of law and he does not decide impulsive decisions. Hence as a millennial, we have different perspectives of opinions and we consider the logical sense on

matters. We wanted to experience life without economic and disastrous complications yet what we are doing is definitely self-contra dic tor y. Adherence is an act but resistance is a choice. Yes, he is the head of our country and we are of course expectant yet we should also take into consideration that he is still in his first year so why judge him as if he’s someone divine who can make massive changes in a blink of an eye? He is still human and after all, he statically has five long years to prove himself worthy of the majority’s vote. National progression has certain methods to undergo and this is just PRRD’s second SONA. Let us just all see what happens next.

THE WORST kind of hope is an excessive belief in ideals. The second State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte is basically another set of promises, relentless threats, and less of what is truly the “state” of our nation and what concrete solutions the government under his rule have made and will make about it. Every Filipino had their eyes and ears ready for what the President has to offer in this momentous event. Amidst the applause and the cheers and the standing ovations his SONA got in the end, it cannot be hidden that there is a gaping hollowness in the content of his speech. We all remembered on his first SONA that the president discoursed through the ending of

Vol. 1 No. 1

contractualization and the imposition of the free tuition program for higher education. However, none of these issues were properly addressed in his second national report of achievements. He talked more of his “commendable actions” towards drugs and arming his constabularies to kill with confidence because they are sheltered beneath his umbrella. He talked trash about his critics and assertively laid down new plans after another yet fell short in proving his words reliable in his previous assurances. In issues concerning the nation, the worst thing a leader can do is to discuss why he abhors it instead of what should be done about it. I have nothing against the way he delivered his SONA, he can curse all he want. After all it’s his way of expressing. But it would be tolerable, were it not for its useless amusements. It has always been the trend—we always get dreamy of the splendour of his verbose speeches. We get swayed by his seemingly iron resolve in attaining what he thinks the people of his nation needs. Yet, it is odd how more constantly ready he could be in throwing frenzies at any irrelevant concern than focusing on the attainment of his promises. No matter how many times his dogmatism has shown him to be wrong, he continues to set forth with his opinions as if proclaiming that we could dwell in the best of all his words. It is not going against the leader of our nation nor is it wishing him the worst of the public’s opinions, but we all can attest that his ideas were criticized not by the bodies who did not understand them but by those who were capable of seeing the idealistic immensity and his overlooking of the stumbling blocks in attaining them. In the relationship of his plans to the larger truths, there is more of a comical prominence of overestimation in achieving them than the proportion of the actuality of their execution. Everything he said was basically a

1st Semester S.Y. 2017 - 2018

mixture of idealism and histrionics. While it is true that without a vision the people “die”, yet it is all the more true that without action the people and their confidence towards that vision die as well. Where ideals fail, their existence remains a livid and a deplorable experiment. Ideas can achieve success but the instigator has to realize them, yet he is out there throwing rocks at people he dislikes. Has he not the sense to see that the very worst method of campaigning for his plans is to try to intimidate and make enmities? He wanted peace but upon the face of the nation he goes on spewing discord. He always felt that any means of expressing his attacks were justified even these are chiefly impertinent. National ideals which are not promulgated in respect is unashamedly alarming especially now that we are clapping for these. Yes, pessimistic it may be to accent the unending cycle of the tendencies of his failure. However, look at the history of his promises right up to this moment and what do you find? A generously proportioned heap of alterations and inconsistencies. Blatantly more of a jammed up fiasco. Indeed, it’s too early to judge him on his first steps but he has promised us so many things and promised us even more that he would do it with substantial urgency. He is skipping into solving another problem while not fully addressing the ones he proposed to resolve beforehand. Yes, the president strongly believes that with rampant criminality and corruption a nation can sink but he appears to have forgotten that a nation can also wither in the shadow of unresolved promises. The repetitive fate of the Filipinos are shaped by men with only great visions but without the greatness to realize them. Blueprints may look remarkable in concepts yet may be far from real in practice. Believe me when I say that there is nothing worse than giving our confidence to the vaguest of plans. A nation hanging at the edge of his ideals without certainty? Is that what the President is prepared to make us settle for? What we Filipinos want is very simple; we want a Philippines according to how we were promised. We were promised of a spanking new nation therefore we have every right to claim it to the one who made us believe he could give it.

GUARDIANS IN STUDENT UNIFORM BY MARK ANGELO S . DUETES

A SECURITY GUARD, also coined as security officer, depicts a special individual whose primary task is to protect and ensure safety among the employing party’s assets like properties, possessions and the like. His job is also to secure certain individuals and ensure the absence of criminal and inappropriate behaviors and other disturbances there might occur using preventive and precautionary measures. The aforementioned tasks of a security guard are evident and vividly observed in terms of Bukidnon State University’s security guards. And aside from those who do this profession on full-time, there are also some students, particularly at Bukidnon State University, who make

Among all the part-time jobs available at BukSU, why did you choose to be Student Security Guards?

this profession a part-time job. They are the kind of students who bravely challenged themselves into having this kind of exhausting yet noble job in order to support their study in the said university. Indeed, they are all completely aware of the unfortunate circumstances that may befall on them simply because upon securing a thing and maintaining peace within the campus, they might as well face threats, dangers and unexpected actions from the students and visitors themselves. But nevertheless, they are still willing to fulfill the tasks stipulated of their part-time job, making them an asset of bravery and eagerness in fulfilling tasks and at the same time managing their academic life. Gilbert A. Benzal, Jerwel C. Signocan, Jose R. Repolidon and Melbert B. Villan — these are the students who are currently the part-time student security guards of Bukidnon State University, as of 2017.

What did you feel on the first day of your job? Are you not worried of the remarks of other students about you?

Wala. Who are your inspiration(s) in taking this job?

How do you balance your time between your academics and your part-time job? Ginabahin namo ang among bakante nga oras. Ang uban pang vacant time maoy ting-buhat namo sa among school requirements. Sa gabii pud ginapadayun namo among academic matters. What are the challenges that you are encountering? How essential is the job of a Security Guard? Busy man gud ko ui.

Ito ang kaukulang panukala ni Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano na bumatay sa House Bill 5867 or (An Act Constituting a Geographic Renaming Commission to Rename Our Country).

Maging alerto at maging mapagmatyag.

PREPARING YOUR FAMILY FOR AN EARTHQUAKE Alamin ang lugar at mga delikadong parte, baka sakaling tamaan ng lindol. Prepare emergency bag or kit for each member of the family Maghanda ng emergency bag or kit isaisa para sa pamilya.

We Don't Need Words

LITERARY

BY JONAH ELIJAH C . ABL ANQUE

A WHISPER. An aria. A prayer.

Art by: Deyrold Casinabe

How long has it been since she stopped hearing things? It happened on the first summer of her arrival in school. They were just classmates that time. He didn't know her name nor asked for it. She didn't tell him either. They weren’t close or anything. She was just a simple girl who looked more beautiful than that of the norm. She doesn’t speak that much. She struggled at first, then gone crying, so as to beg rescue. 2 summers back, she sat in her room reading a book. She had been lying in bed but couldn’t sleep so she decided to grab something out of her pile of books and began reading with a juice in hand. It was a cold and quiet night. She turned on the TV instead of music and left it running at a low volume. A late night western movie was on. The curtains were half open and countless number of lights can be seen through the large window. It had started to rain hard just after lunchtime, but it turns into a shower every now and then, and back to heavy rain again. Strangely, the night was too quiet. She turned off the TV as if it was irritating. It felt too quiet. The last rain had gone and neither cars nor buses could be heard. She could feel the cold through the windows and walls. Suddenly, she felt a nostalgic feeling warming her up. She wondered why she felt like that and remembered the time she was talking to a tree in summer long time ago. Still confused, she closed the book, feeling the need to sleep; she ignored the silence and finished the rest of her juice then went to sleep. That night, she lost her hearing. The next day, she dropped out of school. After a few months, she returned. She tried to speak her thoughts during the discussion at the first day of school but her words drowned as she tried to speak, it sounded more of a broken song, sung with made up lyrics and no actual word or meanings. Seeing her anguish that day, to know and understand better, he decided to befriend her. Starting that day, they would always spend time together, like having the unspoken agreement of an unrestricted relationship. While spending idle time with her, his thoughts came across different endings and partings. ‘Restless do people grow, too little to have known a mere fraction of the sky is only to be shown.’

Probably best describe his worries, afraid that he would confuse love and pity. However, he gradually developed the feeling of care for her, but grieves to have that which he fears to lose. Because growing attachment to her would spell demise for he know that they could never come to understand each other. Weekend came and they agreed to spend the day. “Let’s have a date! I’ll bring lunch and blanket tomorrow, meet me by the meadows under the tree. There’s something I want to tell you,” goes the handwritten letter she left in his bag the day before weekend. After reading the letter, he thought ‘I knew it, from the very beginning; it was never meant to last.’ As the feeling of guilt assailed him from his sleep the night before weekend, he came to realization. ‘You don’t call that love. That was just a selfish, one sided fascination, or, well, just a misunderstanding.’ It wasn’t genuine. In the end, you’ve never fallen in love. And he fell asleep feeling anxious about tomorrow’s meeting. The sun rose and he set to meet her on their date. “Do we need words to express everything?” she suddenly flashed using the message application of her phone the second they met. And it baffled him. The day moved on, but the feeling of confusion with her question seemed to have lingered until the end of the day. As sunset approached, she showed him a paper with the words, “Thank you, I really appreciate all the things you’ve done for me, but please… stop, for it has caused more pain than relief when you treat me with pity. I’m sorry if I forced you into doing this. Thank you for everything, and let’s make this the last time.” Silence filled the air as regret pierced his heart, thinking hard for words of recompense for the times he failed to divine the meaning behind her actions. Then desperately, he tried to tell her. “It’s not like that!” trying to make excuses, but cannot deny that pitiful treatment, it pained her and he knew. She smiled at him and placed a single finger on his lips, so as to say. “We don’t need words now.” She was smiling, but her eyes were all teary and lips were stiff, like she was about to burst into tears, only that she didn’t. ~Then she left. He never got to tell her his answer, so he shouted to the plains “We don’t need words now!!! We don’t need words for now!” “The sun has gone, the light has dimmed and we part ways again. The scenes are quite different now. The echoes are not the same as I once used to hear. It was that then, I scorn upon the frigid spurs of the cold, and embrace this direction I chose to stray, until one day, our thoughts might come array.” Still, on days of calm and idleness, he would always remember her gentle smile as if saying that we don’t need words anymore. And that orange of smile burned the sky, as the sunset dyes the city vermillion, creating crimson colored clouds teasing us all fare goodbye. And it filled the empty space of my heart for a day’s piece of a whole heartedly cry.

A FROWNING FACE , a weighty under lip, rolling eyes and a turbulent soul—we turn into unattractive creatures when we feel hate like how the sky looks uninviting when a tempest comes into view. When one has done wrong, no matter how minute and insignificant that wrong may be, letting it pass is sometimes a task so difficult we may ever face. Shrugging it off is discomfiting as it is innate within us to believe that one’s pride and self-respect are two things which should never to be trifled with. The root is our ego. As we find it, our pride is sometimes too hard to deal with. It requires too much respect and is highly engrossed with a “sense of oneself”. It strongly controls us that we fail to see that we are created differently and with that we have to tolerate each other. We always have our own stubborn propensities of being unforgiving. When one initiates a staring feat, one breaks them with a roll of an eye. When someone goes on sniffing down his nostril at us like we are beneath his gaze, we wave our fists provoking a fight. When we are rectified and embarrassed, we respond as if we don’t like to have somebody around knowing more than we do. It aggravates us. When a snide remark triggers a stinging retort, the slighted person responds with another sharp reply. We dive into our set of erring biased rules misguiding the mind of a sound judgment. Hate is not there yet but in the following hours when we descend deep into the fields of our inner consciousness, hate slowly builds up as it slowly gauges the damages done. Hate is not external but lays deep within oneself. It is evil in itself and destructive with all its consequences It eats upon the host. It destroys the soul. It eliminates values. It feeds upon the host’s ego. It pretends it’s not there making the person guise in deceptive innocence and veneer humility on the outside but filling his mind with the blackest terrors of detestation; gnarled, sagged and twisted. It is the small hate of the silent souls that lead them to their downfall. It is hate’s narrow vision and ego’s absence of understanding that constitutes self-ruin. Sowing winds of hate harvests a hurricane of bitterness. In the course of our days we may face the very storms we have created. Hate comes when we retain the thoughts

24

of our accounts. The truth is the more the clouds of hate darken the more we recede from rational thinking. The more we are sucked up in the storm, the more we seem to deny the possibility of forgiveness. Nevertheless, he who admits to himself that he’s wrong and to the person he has wronged is stronger and better than those who keep hatred within them. However, those who unquestionably forgives are the giants among those who are stronger. We never need to feel subservient to another nor should we look down upon the other as if one is second-rate but character surgery is imperative when we need to have arrogance and pride cut out of our lives. With how we are created differently, rancour is unavoidable. Like how the difference of temperature creates a storm between the cloud and the sea, we create storms with our dissimilarities. Though we are created in disparity still we are much more than “large-scale manufacturers of misunderstanding.” One with superior emotional make-up controls his ego and feelings in a composed manner. He doesn’t want any superiors nor he wants any inferior. True as it is that it’s hard to be kind when one is not especially when we cannot understand why we have to be understanding at all. But hate is self-destructive. One cannot be happy when they hate, for the price of hating others is loving oneself less. Along with so much that weighs our minds there is perhaps even more storms in our souls that we need to pacify. By accepting the universal truth that we all are diverse we are spared of the dangers of destroying ourselves. There is solace and comfort in forgiveness. Like a sunshine breaking through angry storm clouds, it can provide a calming serenity within us. Keeping ourselves from emotional vexation is too basic when we learn to pardon error. There, and only right then we prevent creating storms within us. We are never defined by what others do to us but by how we react about it. At certain points, the people we dislike will not always be the sort of people we take them for. As far as which words we choose to define our response towards them, tolerance will always be the best answer.

Pavements success to

BY RONA D. MACAL AM

“There may be times that I thought about giving up but my desire to graduate fueled my hope to keep pursuing.”

I SUDDENLY felt the urge to hug her upon hearing her story. Tears sprung around ducts of my friend’s eyes as she narrated to me all her experiences relating to her part-time jobs. I can see the weariness of her spirit but I can also see the hope peering through the windows of her soul. The challenge to maintain the balance between getting average grades while having extra jobs during vacant hours for an enough sum she may earn caught me in great awe. I know that it is more than a challenge of character because this is also a battle for her soul. It was 5 pm and her class has ended. She told me that by 6 p.m. she should be at her workplace. She earns five hundred pesos per week and aside from her regular rent of where she’s staying at, she also needed to buy groceries. Driven by her ardent character, she never hesitated to also mention about her need to budget for toiletries and for photocopies of the handouts given by her instructors. The wants to buy fashionable Wednesday outfits and glossy chic bags, spending times at café’s, unwinding at bar’s, and taking outdoor activities without the need to worry about the expenses has been set aside to her goals after she secures a stable job after she graduates. The beauty of her spirit covered her with direct optimism and I was struck in deep amazement. Glimmering cuts of perspiration sprung from her brow and her pink handkerchief – the first thing she purchased from the money she gained from her toil and hard work – did the honor of dabbing it. The relief didn’t appear when she recalled how her employer yelled at her, spurting embarrassing words. She wasn’t trained to wash dishes. And her employer gave no comfort whatsoever to her agony. There were discomforts visible in her hands from the piles of laundry she finished the other day and she earned a hundred pesos from it. She’s clearly exhausted but she’s smiling.

Each of us is facing different circumstances. These circumstances hone us to become true victors in the age of the new day. Yet as we face these challenges, our resilience is tested as to how we deal with the pain whenever failures hit our way. A student who is used to living a comfortable life might only give subtle emphasis on the importance of struggle and survival while someone who is used to fighting their hardest down to the dirt to continue and pursue their education values its significance and lives by its virtue. These two personalities might somehow look different but a closer look would say that they are closely related. One may deal with challenges superficially and the other might engage in the trials wholly. However, they are both reaching to one goal: to arrive and to succeed. And for all we know, the other knows how it pays off to have your sweat be manifested in all the labor of your hands while the other is only acquainted to the shallow part about everything the other person has gone through. Your classmates or your friends may belong to any one of the two. Now, which of the two are you? We all have different ways in succeeding the career path we have chosen. A graceful walk towards the destination does not keep you from reaching the location. However, it takes time. Hasty steps towards the goal do not mean that you will always arrive on time but it gives the assurance that you won’t be too late in your intended time of arrival. At the end of the day, any means of achieving success does not truly give the complete definition of our accomplishment. Because what would become of the means if the end wasn’t achieved? Hence, the thing that matters most is if we satisfactorily achieved our goal. Problems will make our journey challenging but it will also refine us into the person we were meant to become. And when the sun rises again, the story on how we achieve success will serve as an inspiration to everyone who values our story.

BOOK REVIEWS

“You don’t just live along your lifetime, your life will continue through eternity inside the lives of many other, that’s what it means to become a legend.” One of the many noteworthy and catchy lines inscribed within the book entitled Overlord by a young Japanese writer with a penname Maruyama Kugane. The story revolves around a group of people who got lost in a world they know not. The book is dark in theme but uses a humane humor which somehow twists plots and events in a simple but most interesting way which makes the book catchy. Humorous, deceitful and witty, the author’s unwinding of vast interconnected ideas in the golden form of a book is one thing fictional readers should never miss.

THE ALCHEMIST “Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.” An excerpt from a fictional masterpiece entitled “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian novelist who challengingly mixed tales, myth and parable into one masterpiece. This enchanting book has changed countless people with its simplicity and inspiring wisdom. This story is about an adventurous Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who has unwavering resolve to accomplish his personal legend of finding a treasure. He travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the foot of a Pyramid. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane — the story is an eternal testament to the transforming power of dreams and listening to our hearts.

MOVIE REVIEWS Released on June 30, 2017 in theatres, Universal Pictures proudly presents the Despicable Me 3 that continued the adventures of Gru, his new family, and the Minions from the 2 Despicable Me’s and Minions 2015. From being a villain to being a detective that currently works under Anti Villainy League (AVL), Gru (Steve Carell) with his wife, Lucy (Kristen Wiig) got fired for letting the diamondstealer-super villain “Evil Bratt” (Trey Parker) escape. In the midst of struggling for unemployment, Gru’s long lost twin-brother, Dru, popped-up in the story and turned the tables around. Agnes found a real-life Unicorn, Margo got engaged in a weird cheese boy, and the Minions found themselves in prison - hilariously slaving other prisoners. Though the movie was rated “PG”(Parental Guidance) for its action, rude humour and slapstick, it is still highly recommendable for kids and family.

WONDER WOMAN Checking out your movie list? Well, knocking at your big screen is a movie hit which fashioned its own mark into stardom, had amazed the world and left everyone applauding — Wonder Woman! Grossing $798 million worldwide, Wonder Woman is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics and distributed by the Warner Bros. Pictures had its blockbuster hit directed by Patty Jenkins and starred by the Israeli beauty queen, Gal Gadot. The story starts with an Amazon princess Diana, who went off with a soldier (which she eventually fell in love with) outside their magical island to stop the war caused by the god Ares. The extravagant movie effects and the excellent execution of stunts definitely had gangs of friends and families stuck up in their sofas eating popcorn and had quite a lot of men drooling over the leading star. So don’t miss it!

SERIES REVIEWS ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

www.blaxup.com

Orange is the New Black (OITNB) is a masterpiece! It is one of Netflix’s most-watched original series often praised for HUMANIZING prisoners. It will literally take you out for a roller coaster ride with it’s perfect balance of drama, comedy, and an awesome cast to whip an awesome series. The story revolves around a woman prison, filled with different race, gender, and heart-wrenching back stories. The series accurately showed the impact of corruption, brutality, and drugs to the well-being of the prisoners. It’s a real eye-opener! Just a little warning, the series is not intended for fainthearted humans. It’s a little bit . . . uncensored. But that’s what make this series outstanding. Orange is the New Black is currently on its 5th season.

Stranger Things is one of the best series Netflix ever produced with each episode teeming with sheer quality. For starters, Stranger Things is a science fiction, horror, vintage themed thriller revolving around the disappearance of a young boy, a psychokinetic young girl, and various cases of supernatural events in their town. The series masterly generates an eccentric and mysterious vibe which depicts it’s great storytelling and jaw-dropping production. The enchanting synthesis of humor, nostalgia, and horror will surely beguile you to binge-watch the entire series in just a single earth rotation. Anyhow, these are just the tip of the iceberg on why Stranger Things stood out from the rest. You’ll surely won’t regret watching this series I swear! And by the way, Season 2 is coming this October 27, 2017.

ALBUM REVIEWS HOPELESS FOUNTAIN KINGDOM

www.popcrush.com

The electropop artist, Ashley Nicole Frangipane, professionally known as Halsey, released her sophomore album [following Badlands] through Astralwerks with its majestic title Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. She released HFK on June 2nd of this year and it has been garnering a lot of attention from her massive following and from critics alike. She released the music video for the track Now or Never on April 4, 2017 in which the epicenter theme is likened to the star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare—Romeo and Juliet. The album has 16 tracks featuring Lauren Jauregui of Fifth Harmony, Quavo of Migos, and Cashmere Cat. My favorites are 100 Letters, Alone, and Heaven in Hiding to name a few (Nah. I’m in love with the entire album!). Give it a listen, find your favorites, and add them to your playlists!

American hip hop recording artist, singer-songwriter, and record producer Russell Vitale, professionally known as Russ, finally got his deserved breakout as an artist in the mainstream light. Russ released his contemporary R&B debut studio album There’s Really A Wolf on May 5th of this year through Columbia Records. Russ has been accentuating on his songs that he mixed, mastered, engineered, written, and produced, not just this album, but all his works. This album has 20 tracks that he recorded since 2015. My favorites are Losin Control, Cherry Hill, and Do It Myself (and the rest of the album obviously!). Russ has already been ten years deep in the rap game and is one of the realest in the industry. His songs are perfect for any mood and you truly would want to become a part of his fanbase! *wink*
