M1 - Diagramming Design Precedent Serpentine Pavilion 2001 by Libeskind

The process of modelling starts with the understanding of basis structure of this pavilion. Angled exterior walls without any curved structure was inspired by origami art, which contain separated look but systematically connected form. While the aluminium cladding provided a huge relfective surface of surrounding. As a pavilion, uncoursed flat ground and wide ceiling shows a large public space for visitors and other users in different purposes, as well as provided a linear vision field and connected external elements such as light, wind and etc.

Task 1: Surface and Waffle Structure

7

Interior skin reserve the feeling of exterior skin. Differnent scales and levels of pattern are experienced on the skin to provide interest through light element.

Following the skin pattern, the contour structure in z-direction offset the space manifestation. Same handling is made in the other side of the z-direction contour.

Analysis

Spiculate centralized at the middle of the skin define the mid-air space

Different opening sizes are experienced to provides different sizes of shadow, as well as the air circulation.

Curved edges provide a gentle feeling rather than rigid edges. Small panels at the bottom but also brings out the wider space proportion, as well as the density of panels to form the base feeling from very start.

Large interior space is created through the boundry (z-axis contour)

The process of creating the surface was very straight forward, each pair of surfaces by using eight adjustable line in a cube, and loft together. The mean point that I tried to aviod was the pair of surfaces can interacting with each other. The four effects I tried to create are symmetry, spiral, syntropy spiral and intertwined. In further analysis I find that the second effect can create a large mid-air opening and diagonal space that I want to experience.

Laser Cutting

About the laser cut, the very start is to unroll surface and tab them that can glue them together. I find that the comment of _Unrollsrf sometimes can unroll wrongly and overlap that have to be addjusted. As well, because of the size of model, the tab should make in very appropriate size (3-5mm). Because of my waffle’s shapes are all curved, the problem of making joins that some of them cannot go well that after make 2D I have to adjust them. The grasshopper is quite efficient but it can also cause some problem.

11

Isometric

Two surfaces’ have same characters that top part is bigger that bottom part, which can define the mid-air space. Two shapes of panel are selected to create variation. The mean idea of the design is trying to play with light. For the right part, nature sun light can go through the different-sized square where shadow casting can have different sizes. For the left part, the interior night light can go through to outside. Due to the organic nature of the material, light can always scattering to create gentel effect and reduce rigid.

The waffle structure was based on the pair of skin panel. I decided to make the skin to facing inside that the waffle itself can act as decoration, rather than just for structure. Two other sides of waffle are curved in as following the skin panel shape, as well as to define interior space and reduce rigid feeling. The overlaping contour also create a strong variation.

Analysis Light hole at the bottom provide interior light element inside of the structure, by character of material, light can scattering through the whole body.

Threshold of function, from here the property of inside and outside can be defined.

large opening and interacted interior space create air circulation.

Thin wall is not providing a major structural role, but as a clear boundary of the structure and threshold, as well as decorative role.

Heavy wall act as a structural role, as well as a boundry of the inside and outside.

Interior space are defined by pentagonal dodecahedron as the booleaned element.

Small hole can pre-access the structure, users are able to peep at the inside.

The process begins with a 150x150x150mm bounding box and subdivides the cube into 3x3 sub-cubes. Points attractor effects are then applied to manipulate the grid and transform the shape to attempt different variations. The grid centroid is used for the shape distribution to maintain the consistency of shape arrangement. Different effects such as ramdom attractor and curve attractor are experienced for shape transformation.

Isometric

The model was cut diagonally by a cube (1/8 size). The effects that I tried to play with are variation of cutting space and the interior space. I aimed to treat this model as a pavilian that thinking circulation and thresholds were the mean points I want to achieve, as well as sizes of other elements. The light effect also experienced me in many ways. Light hole at the bottom provide interior light element inside of the structure, by character of material, light can scattering through the whole body. Large opening and interacted interior space create air circulation. Thin wall is not providing a major structural role, but as a clear boundary of the structure and threshold, as well as decorative role. Conchoidal roof provides large shading area, as a shalter function, such as summer hot sunlight/ raining.

Mean body of the pavilion, as one structure, its spiral form start from ground, to side wall, and finally to roof.

Interior skin panel provides both of visual variaton and amplify in sound. (as the function for presentaton and small concert)

Dense small opening provide air and light go through as a threshold, also able to provide a sort of private in the public pavilion. (blocking vision) Wooden basement for interact with the site condition (garden) Small moveable sit, can be pieced together by two to act as a standing platform for presentation/ small concert.

Water for interact with light, as well as a transfer between nature elements. It’s also able to provide a feeling of Zen.
