Do you know what song is number one on the country charts right now? It is none other than a song named "Jolene" by Dolly Parton from her insanely popular album entitled "Dolly, Live from London". It is so good to see a country legend back on top of the charts! My memories of Dolly Parton date back to the film "9 to 5" released in 1980. Dolly also wrote and performed a song by the same name which won a Grammy nomination and award. In the film, Dolly played Doralee Rhodes a secretary to an overbearing and over-aggressive boss played by Dabney Colemen. This was Dolly's first acting role and one realizes that Dolly is the same person on screen as she is off screen--genuine! The reason that her new album, "Dolly: Live from London" is so popular is because Dolly brings this genuine enthusiasm and genuine country voice to the stage like no other. Like many songs on the album, the song "Jolene" that has hit the #1 spot on the country charts is not a new one. This song was released in 1973 and became Dolly Parton's first big blockbuster country song. The song tells the story of a housewife having concerns that her husband would stray for another women. The refrain lines, "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/I'm begging of you please don't take my man" illustrate this anguish. Like many of Dolly's songs, and many country songs in general, this song mirrors the personal circumstances in Dolly's life. At the time, Dolly's husband Carl Dean was receiving excessive flirtation from a beautiful bank teller and Dolly had to fight for her man. As always, she came out on top and is still married to Carl Dean this many years later. There are many other songs on this album that you know by heart and tell stories of love, loss, and fun. The first one that you will probably know is called "Two Doors Down" which tells a story of all three: love, loss, and fun. In the song, Dolly laments, "Two doors down, They're laughing and drinkin', and having a party" while she is at home lamenting a relationship gone wrong. However, she decides to attend the fun party and meets a man that she brings back to her apartment just "two doors down". Another that you surely know is "Islands in the Stream". Written in 1983 by the Bee Gees and sung by Dolly, along with Kenny Rogers, this song reached #1 on every chart list in the U.S.A. In this song, Dolly requests of her lover, "Sail away with me to another world"; and who in their right mind could resist? The album also contains new tracks entitled "Only Dreamin" which is a Celtic influenced song

about a lost love and "Backwoods Barbie", an homage to the country life that inspired her upbringing. This is not only an album to be enjoyed by country fans or fans of Dolly. It is an album that all will enjoy!
