ith the clocks going back and the leaves changing colour, there’s no doubt that we’re moving into a reflective time of the year. It’s time to decide what needs to be done before winter bites and the frenzy of festive preparation begins. Try an autumn clean to sweep away anything you don’t need after the summer. Or experiment by hanging a picture in a new location or reupholstering a favourite chair.

reating a new kitchen was at the top of Ally Mosley’s wish list when she took over the family farm from her parents with her husband and their nine-year-old twins. She has spent the past three years renovating the farmhouse with the aim to reinstate the property’s original Edwardian character. Ally’s grandfather bought the house in the 1950s and he made some less than sympathetic improvements to the place. Ally takes a lot of pride in her cooking, so she needed a new kitchen which would function as the hub of the home as well as complementing the period architecture. She chose to have a bespoke Shaker in-frame design – so-called because the cabinet doors are hung within a frame using sturdy recessed butt hinges – made by Churchwood Design, a family business which has been established for over 30 years. The impressively capacious island provides plenty of additional worktop space and storage, as well as a breakfast bar arrangement. A large dining table, which seats eight comfortably, was also included to offer a more formal dining area for special Sunday lunches rustled up in the large range cooker. The vast mantel around it provides plenty of integrated cupboard storage, so that Ally’s work zone stays tidy with minimum effort. Excellent storage is always at the heart of a good kitchen and the Shaker design is an elegant and timeless choice which is at home in most period properties. Using white and blue in the kitchen also brings a fresh take on country style. Ally has personalised the space with family portraits on the sideboard and made the most of floor-to-ceiling storage with a dedicated larder, complete with a breakfast section. Her choice of natural materials from golden-hued timber to cream-coloured stone flooring helps to evoke a feeling of relaxed comfort and easy living. She has carefully thought about what will work best for her as the cosy nook with a sofa and an unobtrusive wall-hung television keeps the family happily entertained whilst the chef gets on with food prep for the next mouthwatering meal.
Excellent storage is key to a functional cook zone especially in a characterful period property
INDUSTRY INSIGHT Charlotte Ambler, designer at Churchwood Design, shares her thoughts on planning “A bespoke in-frame kitchen, made using high-quality timbers and traditional cabinet making techniques, is a long term investment. The furniture will last for generations, becoming part of your home’s architectural fabric. Handles and colours can be easily updated to give a fresh visual appeal and the furniture itself will be as good as the day it left the workshops. Cabinet size and shape flexibility allows you to fully exploit the dimensions of any given space.”
Over the last year Churchwood Design has installed kitchens priced from £12,000-£50,000, with the average cost of a kitchen at around £20,000. 01298 872 422, churchwood.co.uk

DAVID DOMONEY “All you need to know about growing spuds”
Laura Hillier offers her top tips on working with your plot during a busy time in the gardening diary October is the perfect time to give the garden a little bit of tender, loving care. You will still be lifting lots of delicious harvests to enjoy – apples, pears, autumn raspberries, pumpkins, squashes and beans, to name a few – which will leave spaces of earth that will definitely benefit from a natural boost. Dig these areas over, removing weeds and spent crops, and then sow some green manures. These will help to cover the vacant ground until it is needed again, as well as adding some much-needed nutrients back into the soil when they
are cut down and dug into the ground. Crops for overwintering, such as broad beans, can be sown now, but this is only recommended in mild areas. Remember that spring cabbages should now be ready to get in the ground, too. Finally, now is the ideal time to take cuttings from your currants and gooseberries. You may even inspire some novice gardeners to grow their own too! So although the peak of the season may now be past us, there are still plenty of opportunities to add to your space and keep your plot healthy and productive.

Raspberries
Thought to have originated in east Asia, these delicious berries have been enjoyed by people for thousands of years. Sweet, juicy and rich in colour, they are known as 'nature's candy', although their rich supply of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants far outstrips any man-made confectionery. There are many ways to include raspberries in your diet; they are delicious in pies, jams and smoothies, and equally tasty on their own. Though raspberries were once considered a late summer crop, new growing methods have allowed the season to extend all the way from June until October. There is still time to harvest this versatile berry, but you'll need to be quick – it's only around until the end of the month.

Make your home effortlessly stylish with an Art Deco poster from Pullman Editions
ince its introduction in the 1920s, Art Deco has remained a popular motif among interior designers, artists and collectors alike. The last decade in particular has seen a substantial growth in the vintage poster market, the likes of which once adorned station platforms and billboards to entice affluent travellers and promote newly-fashionable modes of transportation. Sadly, many of these pieces have since been destroyed and the remaining few comfortably fetch five-figure sums at auction, excluding them to all but the wealthiest of collectors.
LIMITED EDITION
Pullman Editions specialises in producing original Art Deco works that are stylish yet affordable. Founded by Simon and Georgina Khachadourian, it is the sister company of London’s Pullman Gallery, renowned as the leading specialist dealer in original vintage posters. From its premises in Pimlico Road, Pullman Editions designs, commissions and publishes striking artwork which captures the enduring appeal of Art Deco. Each poster is restricted to a release of 280 units, ensuring the buyer gets a limited edition work of art. Executed by leading poster artists, each with their own unique style, the pieces are signed, hand-numbered and bear the Pullman Editions embossed stamp of authenticity. Once described as a ‘visual shout’, posters are the perfect decorative statement for the home. Pullman Editions products are priced at £395 and distributed unframed in robust tubes to protect the artwork, measuring approximately 97x65cm. PRACTICAL MAGIC
This month our expert Claire Rendall reveals the secrets of global luxury interior design
A
lot of people think luxury interior design is about walking into a room, waving your arms about and saying, “Darlings, I see green,” and walking out again probably followed by a couple of overfed pugs. But it is so much more than that. A space has to work on a practical level too. Plumbing, electrics, heating, air con, security and the architecture of a space, need to be considered before we even start on interior decoration. Keeping up to date with technology is vital for electrics and security, and I also need to be fully informed of all the finishes available and how they work. Spaces need to be functional, effortless to live in and not fall apart. I love the challenge of different environments. When I was working on Sydney’s harbourside, the conditions could not have been more austere: from the intense sun and searing heat, to high humidity and salt water spray. Only yachts get this type of environment! Everything I produced had to withstand these extremes. But it’s not just about throwing money at a project. Technically everything had to be thought

through and I’m thrilled to say, some years later, nothing has moved a millimetre. At Longleat House, the Elizabethan home of Lord Bath, it was paramount for me to respect this historic building and its treasured contents and to safeguard for future generations, so every project has its own idiosyncrasies. It’s fascinating to me the enormous difference that light quality makes around the world. In the Mediterranean for example, swimming pools look best if they’re white. That way the sunlight creates a stunning and appropriately named Azure blue. Elsewhere the refraction of light could do with a bit more help from coloured tiles. Colour swatches are different too; even Dulux has its own Southern Hemisphere book. Materials and the way we use them around the world can vary too. Polished concrete looks smart and contemporary in hot climates, but can be dull and a bit depressing in cooler parts of the world. Marbles and travertines can be warmed with underfloor heating in the home, but the coldness of the light means they often need enhancing with texture. But heavy textures in hot and humid countries can be a
STYLE NOTES
Claire loves the opportunity to invent different schemes for different clients around the world. tad uncomfortable. Our interior designs need to take this all into account. There are practical issues too. Strong UV in harsh sunlight can destroy delicate fabrics unless filters and screens are applied. Solid timbers can warp and bend with high humidity and excessive dryness. Salt spray from the sea can easily corrode unprotected metalwork, and hard water can stain glass. One also needs to be fully aware of rules and regulations when dealing with luxury international interior design. Interestingly countries that rightly prevent children’s unaccompanied access to swimming pools, allow 13 amp sockets right next to wash basins and sinks! I do love countries that are separated by a common language. In Australia family rooms are bizarrely called ‘rumpus rooms’, and ‘wardrobes’ become simply ‘robes’. It took a while for me to realise that ‘Manchester’ refers to linen, alluding to the city’s illustrious past as the world’s leading site for textile manufacture. Thankfully I’m better informed now and am in no danger of getting as mad as a cut snake, as they say!

“
y brother and I grew up spending time in the country and I wanted my own children to be able to experience that same sense of freedom,” says Jane Slemeck. She embarked on her search for a country home when her children, Coco and Jim, were aged about 3 and 5. “I kept thinking about a remark my mother had made before she died, urging me to give my children a chance to grow up in the country,” she recalls. “It wasn’t really practical for us to move out of London because my husband Mark’s business is based there but having spent his childhood in South Africa, the outdoor life is very much part of his DNA. He didn’t need much persuading that school holidays spent cycling, swimming and tree climbing were going to be fun for the children and for us. Another factor was that we wanted a family holiday home where Fred and Sophie, Mark’s children from his first marriage, could come and stay. We thought it was important that the children should have memories of holidays spent together. ”
KEY CONSIDERATIONS
The Slemecks drew up a list of what they wanted from a second home. “We wanted somewhere with character and warmth which was spacious enough for friends and family to stay, with a veranda and a courtyard and enough land to provide peace and privacy whilst not being isolated. And we needed to be within easy reach of an airport! Rather than head for the home counties, we decided that we’d get more for our money in France, a country we both love,” says Jane. “By chance we found a South African estate agent near Bordeaux and it definitely helped with the communication aspect. We arranged that I’d visit for a few days, take a look at some properties and get the feel of the place.” Jane viewed the house of her dreams on her second day. As soon as she saw the courtyard with buildings on three sides, she knew that she’d found what she was looking for. “The earliest part of the half-timbered portion dates from the 1600s and judging from the proportions of the principal rooms we think it had originally been a

WORK IN PROGRESS
The gentleman had put in a swimming pool and modernised parts of the house rather haphazardly so it was habitable but badly in need of some TLC. Jane admits that when she phoned Mark with the news that she’d found “the perfect property but that it would be a work in progress for some time to come, he thought I was insane.” Undaunted, she went ahead and bought it. Thankfully It wasn’t long before Mark was as passionate about the house as she was. “We try to visit at least once every month even if it’s just for a weekend and during the holidays we drive down with the children, luggage and a large dog tightly packed in the back of the car

and we’re here for as long as possible,” she says. Right from the start Jane knew that the property would have to earn its keep so the first rental guests arrived within three months of the purchase. “By the end of that summer I’d banked enough to pay the utility bills for the year and at that point I gained Mark’s respect. He could see that my vision wasn’t going to bankrupt us. In due course we’ll get around to converting that barn into a proper games room and another into an additional wing for guests but there are lots of other things that need doing first.”

Jane’s background is design-orientated. Initially she worked in fashion but after returning from Australia after a year rounding up cattle on a remote Queensland farm, she changed direction and came back to the UK to train as a cabinetmaker with David Savage in Devon. Later she
moved to London and designed Regency and Georgianinspired furniture for architect Jane Taylor, whose practice undertakes a lot of refurbishment work. “Working with an architect gave me an excellent grounding in the practical aspects of building as well as interior design so when friends began asking me to advise them on projects, I branched out on my own,” says Jane. “I call myself an interior consultant rather than an interior designer. I help clients decide on a concept rather than specifying every last cushion. I draw up plans and suggest ways of reorganising the space or possibly extending the property. My address book is packed with the names of reliable builders, craftsmen and suppliers which is something that foreign clients especially appreciate. They come to the UK knowing no one and it can be difficult creating a home. Each project I take on is very different and I like the challenge that entails.”

SUSSEX SPLENDOUR
Recipe for Success How the founders of Higgidy created the perfect home to go with their perfect pies Words ROS CONNELLY/NARRATIVES Photography ROBERT SANDERSON/NARRATIVES
W
hen Camilla Stephens, Founder and Chief Pie Maker at Higgidy, and her husband James Foottit, Director at Higgidy, wanted to buy their rented home and adapt it to their family’s needs, it was no pie in the sky idea. With a new baking company becoming the focus of their lives, a few years ago Camilla and James made a monumental decision. “The business, Higgidy, was really beginning to take off, but we needed a bit more capital to inject into it,” says Camilla. “So, we decided to take a risk – we sold our home in Fulham to help fund the business.”
NEW BEGINNINGS
The couple had already moved to the south coast, where they rented a tiny two-up-two-down farmer’s cottage, located in an idyllic spot at the foot of the South Downs. At the time, the company headquarters was situated not far from the cottage and comprised a spare space in their business partner’s warehouse. When Higgidy continued to flourish, they decided to move to a bigger property which was closer to amenities. “We really needed to be nearer to shops and a train station,” explains Camilla. The couple made the sensible decision to keep renting until they were absolutely sure they would be staying in Sussex, and the property they found ticked most of the boxes; a spacious townhouse with high ceilings and beautiful cornice work, that had been cleverly extended by the previous owner. There was, however, still one unticked box. “We really needed a big kitchen to try out recipes, and the house simply didn’t have one.” Three years later they found themselves in a position to buy the property and make some essential changes. Luckily, their landlady had been looking to sell and the family felt at home there and wanted to continue growing their business, so they bought it from her. “We paid a fair price and she was very kind to us,” recalls Camilla. “The whole process was incredibly easy.” Once the property was their own, the couple were able to think about how to reconfigure it to suit them and their two children; Kate, 7, and Jack, 5. James had originally studied architecture and worked as a builder in the past, so he had strong feelings on building design and aspired to a minimalist look using natural materials. In practice, he had to balance these aspirations with the needs of a family home.

ACHIEVING THE VISION
The wet room at the top of the house was the first to be tackled, and the couple transformed it into a pretty paneled second bathroom. They also created two bedrooms out of one large space on the top floor, the smaller of which they use as a room for their toddler nephew who visits once a week. The biggest change, however, took place a year ago. “There was an enormously wide room at the back of the property that went across the whole width of the house,” Camilla explains. “The previous owner had it as a sitting room, but we decided to turn it into a kitchen.

We chose some Neptune units and had the rest made by the same builders we used for our factory down the road. The work was finished in just three weeks.” The new kitchen and dining area is something the whole family can now appreciate. Camilla loves how the room brings everyone together, and considers it the centre of the house. It is a wonderful space to play host to big groups of family and friends in, which they often do, and has also seen the development of several new Higgidy recipes. “The big island unit is ideal for laying everything out and making a bit of a mess,” laughs Camilla. When it came to choosing colours, the couple remained true to James’ original vision and went for a neutral palette. They combined greys, natural wood and Cornforth white with soft blues and greens – expect for the snug which is painted a deep red. The room is naturally dark and so they opted not to fight the lack of light or attempt to use pale colours, and went for something dramatic instead. Camilla and James are clearly delighted with the results of their hard work, and know they made the right decision in selling their London home. “Everything feels just right,” says Camilla. “We are so glad we took the risk in the first place!” Kate uses neutral

two-bedroom former Victorian workman’s cottage, this 1890s-built cottage in Bushey, Hertfordshire is home to vintage and antique shop owner, Louise Lingwood. Filled to the brim with curiosities and beautiful finds, it’s a perfect fit for Louise, who has a passion for vintage wares.
PERIOD CHARM
“I love waking early and visiting local boot fairs and flea markets to scurry through boxes of hidden treasures for my home or garden,” Louise explains. “I’ve always been fond of the romantic lines of the Art Deco period and I adore green Depression era glassware and American vintage. I’m particularly drawn to anything that, in its time, was made for use and practical purposes and not just for show or display.”
Louise’s motivation behind purchasing the cottage was to find a period style home in a more rural community, and Bushey was one of the areas she selected. “I spent quite a bit of time driving around several roads in the village and noticed a sale sign outside this house,” she continues. “Having gone to find out more at the local estate agent, who told me it was no longer available, I put it to the back of my mind and started looking at other properties.” As luck would have it, a few weeks later, Louise received a phone call early one Saturday morning to say the cottage had come back onto the market. “I was thrilled and as soon as I walked in through the door it ticked all the boxes,” she adds. “The cottage was in good condition with several original Victorian features that I love, including sash windows and four original open fireplaces.” PERIOD IDEAS 41

FIRST STEPS
Louise moved in during the spring and didn’t hesitate to put her stamp on the cottage. Her first task was to replace the worn carpet with wooden flooring throughout the downstairs area, and she upcycled the kitchen units herself by painting the original dark brown units in cream. “These cottages are tiny and you have to be fairly imaginative on how to use them – mine is full of eclectic treasures and is very much loved,” says Louise. Thanks to her creative eye, Louise has upcycled interesting antique furniture pieces found in flea markets, car boots and online favourite, eBay. Her favourite pastime is to treasure hunt for items for her home and business, especially journeying to the East and West Coasts of the US. “I love American vintage and I have spent quite a lot of time

visiting friends in Los Angeles where there is a rich source,” she says. “I’ve just come back from a trip to Lisbon where I picked up several beautiful finds all very reasonably priced in flea markets. I also love to visit the French town of St Remy de Provence.” More recently, having perused several kitchen retailers, the kitchen range at Country Life Interiors caught her eye on her local high street. “I’m passionate about supporting our local shops, tradesmen and businesses,” she adds. “I wanted a country-inspired kitchen with traditional features including a butler sink and light painted units. It was quite a challenge to fit everything in such a compact space; the only hiccup occurred when the American-style fridge-freezer got in the way of the step leading down to the kitchen, but thankfully this was easily remedied by my builder.”

VINTAGE FEEL
Upstairs, Louise’s master bedroom is a feminine room packed with colour, interest and curiosities including vintage fabrics and her beloved pink Art Deco mirror above the original fireplace. “At the time of the move I began noticing vintage fabrics popping up everywhere. I used to love visiting Cath Kidston’s first tiny shop in Notting Hill where she’d be every day with her dog, Stanley! To me, it was the perfect shop, full of re-found treasures and vintage fabrics,” she says. “I purchased one of the first ever Cath Kidston floral wallpapers from that shop and I couldn’t wait to put it on my bedroom wall ‒ I still love it today.”
A recent addition upstairs is the elegant bathroom Louise has put together with the help of her builder, Stephen Innes. “Having inherited and lived with a pink bathroom suite for years that screamed 1980s, it was very important to create an aesthetically beautiful room that wouldn’t date in time,” she admits. “I knew I definitely wanted a roll-top bath with a large walk-in shower, and I love the look of tongue-and-groove panelling in bathrooms. My builder was brilliant and came up with the idea of having ceramic floor tiles that look like wood, which was a great compromise.” Louise’s pride and joy is her cottage garden that she refers to as her ‘sanctuary’. “When I moved here there was quite a bit of planting to do and the garden is fairly high maintenance,” she says, explaining that she also exhibited her garden during an annual summer open garden event to raise money for a local hospice. “I love packed and chaotic gardens, and mine attracts a huge amount of wildlife ‒ next door’s cat is a particular fan! Early evenings and summer afternoons are absolutely gorgeous as the garden catches the sun at the end of the day. I like to sit there and enjoy afternoon tea with guests when they pop by.”
Louise’s most recent addition is an insulated garden room, in memory of her late mother Joyce, who adored gardens and taught her everything about gardening. “My earliest memory of her is when I was a child and I couldn’t get to sleep. I remember watching her through my bedroom window and there she’d be, digging away in the garden on a summer’s evening until late. Even in her later years she found happiness nurturing a garden plot in her retirement home. One of our favourite places that we loved to visit together was our local lavender farm, Hitchin Lavender.” Louise spent two years researching summerhouses, trying to find an affordable one that fitted and suited her garden. “One of my favourite places is Cape Cod, so I wanted to capture that elegant style with clapboard and a cedar shingle roof without it looking too much like a beach hut,” she says. “I love the triangular windows at the top and there are three double sockets inside and the room is fully insulated with an electric heater. I furnished the garden room with a console table that I painted myself with knobs from one of my favourite stores, Anthropologie. I store my vintage fabrics ribbons, craft supplies and my sewing machine in here. If I’m not busy organising pop-up vintage fairs or weekend excursions to English country villages, you’ll find me in here doing my crafting or sewing.”
OUTDOOR INSPIRATION
Louise named her online shop Love & Lilac (loveandlilac.co.uk) after a lilac tree in the front garden that didn’t flower until the third spring she was here. “When it’s in bloom, the scent is so heady and amazing that people stop to admire it as they’re passing,” she says. “For me it’s all about the plants. Happiness is visiting gardens and sleepy villages that have a real ambience of 1950s England. There’s something timeless about an old-fashioned English cottage garden and Hertfordshire has some beautiful towns and villages, so I’m spoilt for choice.” Warm, comfortable and vibrant, Louise’s characterful cottage is brimming with original touches to enjoy all year round. Discover how internationally-sourced furniture and accessories have set Trading Boundaries apart
ituated in the heart of East Sussex and specialising in furniture and accessories from India, Trading Boundaries is your default destination for unique, high-quality and competitively priced pieces. Whether you are looking for an accent item of furniture or to completely update your home, you’re sure to find an exotic and stylish piece to complement your interiors. Trading Boundaries was established in 1996, and for owners Michael Clifford and Tracy Thomson, the past 21 years have been an extraordinary journey. “We were both interested in interior design during the mid-1990s and became aware of fabulous Indian furniture arriving in the UK,” Tracy explains. “But it was only available in expensive London boutiques. Michael’s mother was born in India, as his grandparents had been missionaries out there, and having visited as a teenager he had a real
affinity for the country. With this in mind, we decided he should travel there to see if he could find these amazing products himself. A trip to India was planned in early 1996 and the rest, as they say, is history.” Michael and Tracy began their business in a warehouse importing Indian furniture, before moving a couple of years later to transform a derelict Georgian coaching inn into a retail emporium. “From our simple beginnings, it’s extraordinary to realise how the business has developed over the years,” Michael reflects. New products continue to be added, and Trading Boundaries has slowly grown to include the most extensive range of Indian furniture in the South as well as other international influences. Existing contemporary ranges include finest quality Japanese linen sofas that offer comfort and style, as well as the Zen range of solid acacia wood, which
has Art Deco influences with a textured finish and includes a wide selection of furniture for every room. The Saigon Stone range is on trend thanks to its clean lines and polished concrete, and there is also a breathtaking collection of contemporary rustic dining tables from Italy just waiting to be discovered. This range is made from reclaimed oak, and the natural characteristics of the wood really bring these tables to life. Celebrating its 21st year as an independent retailer, Trading Boundaries is very much a destination. Alongside its beautiful setting, with a café, gallery and live music venue, it offers two floors of showrooms full to the brim with furniture, textiles, homeware, accessories, jewellery and unusual gifts. The business is open seven days a week so whatever you’re looking for, it’s well worth a visit.

P
aul Freedman and Jane Millichip camped in a chilly former art gallery in Penzance for years, before and after their sons Billy, 16, and Joe, 13, were born. It was built in the late Victorian era as a small warehouse for a nearby shop; and more recently their friend Andy used it to store stock for his interiors business. Before that it was an art gallery for a dozen years between in the 1980s and 1990s called The Wolf At The Door. “The granite building was just a shell divided by a floor and staircase,” Paul recalls. “At first there was only a loo and a wash basin left over from its art gallery days but no heating and no hot water. The cold water supply was tapped into from a pipe running through the basement. We had to slither through a hatch in the floor to get into the basement which was damp and horrible.”
TEMPORARY MEASURES
Later, another family staying there for a few months created a temporary bathroom by extending the cloakroom to add a Bette bath (without taps) and what Paul calls a “weedy electric shower.” “There was a temporary kitchen too,” he says, wincing. “It consisted of a cheap steel sink and taps combo extracted

from the council dump and mounted on a sagging length of chipboard with only the cold tap connected. The oven was a Baby Belling, later upgraded to an LPG oven with accompanying gas bottles.” Despite all this, the family loved the area and ten years ago Paul and Jane offered to buy a half share in the warehouse by giving it a total overhaul equivalent to half its value. “We consulted an architect who quoted us £120,000 but that included converting the basement into to extra bedrooms, a plan that we later abandoned,” says Paul. “It took us six years to get started because we kept amending our plans, but in the end my architect brother-in-law produced drawings from our designs in which we used the basement as a laundry, boiler room and surf board store. All we did down there was clear piles of old timbers and as much loose floor surface as we could to minimise the damp. We decided to leave the bare stone walls as they were.” Once they’d begun it took over a year to refurbish the place, with Paul and Andy making regular inspection visits. “Basically we gutted it – removing both floors - then put back everything salvageable like the pine staircase and the Bette

SENSE OF PLACE Explore the hidden history of a Cornish gem Penzance is the most westerly major town in Cornwall and is about 75 miles from Plymouth and 300 miles from London. Among other things, the town is famous for being home to pirates in Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. When the libretto was written in 1879, the town was a peaceful holiday resort so the idea of it hosting pirates was highly amusing. Today it is at the heart of the revival in Cornish culture.

bath,” says Paul. “The main construction work lay in removing the central steel column that supported the first floor and replacing it with an reinforced steel joint which spanned the whole floor. We replaced a number of rotting joists in the basement, and rewired, re-plastered and put in new plumbing to the bathroom and kitchen.”
STOP THE ROT
The multiple layers of damaged and rotting pine and chip board flooring were discarded and both floors were replaced with engineered oak from Normandy. “We also ordered new double-glazed windows from Poland and Andy went to collect them,” says Paul. “Unfortunately they proved to be too small so the builders had to add ‘packing’ to make them fit.” They turned one old window into a set of double doors. Upstairs they put in an insulated ceiling to hide the unattractive high roof timbers and outside they renewed all the old guttering and repainted the fascia boards. “We added gas central heating and installed a wood burner,” says Paul. “We re-built the stud walls to form the bathroom where we also removed all the render from one of the walls to expose the underlying granite. Then we asked Woodchester Cabinet Makers to make and fit our kitchen, which we had designed and positioned as an inclusive part of

the downstairs living space. Anybody working at the kitchen counter faces into the room.” Finally they painted the interior white and the exterior offwhite. Jane says, “We put the place together piecemeal over the years and it’s an amalgamation of lots of different things. But with the painted wood and the whites and pale greys, I think it looks a bit like a Scandinavian lakeside cabin.” When it came to the furnishings, they used Andy’s old stock plus some spare furniture of their own. “We also bought a few items and acquired others through favours owed. For instance, we had a couple of storage units made for us in return for work that I had done for Darbyshire Framemaking,” says Paul.
FRENCH FANCY
“Our favourite item is our old French bed which we had painted in Parma Grey by Farrow & Ball,” says Jane. “The bed epitomises what the house is all about – it’s big, relaxing and comfortable.” Today ‘The Wolf’, as they family calls it feels like a fantastic home from home where they come to slip away from London and Gloucestershire and kick back. “One thing we never quite manage is to cut back on cooking as much as we intend,” says Paul. “There are fantastic places to eat round here but the local fishmongers and farmers’ market are so good that we inevitably end up cooking in the kitchen at some point. As we always know we’ll be back in few weeks a rainy indoor weekend isn’t a big deal for us although,of course, the dedicated among us can surf all year round, rain or shine.” “When we’re all sitting round the woodburner it’s really cosy,” Jane says. “And since we got Seamus, our Irish terrier, we spend even more time going for long rugged moorland and cliff top walks on sections of the South West Coast Path.”
Above The French bed, wardrobe and side cabinets were part of Andy’s stock when Paul and Jane bought the warehouse and were reefreshed for a new lease of life

The current interiors trend I love the most is botanicals
hen Carole King wrote the first post for Dear Designer in 2009, little did she know just how influential her blog would soon become. My top tip is... don’t rush into decisions, whether they’re design choices (live in a space for a while before deciding on décor) or business decisions.
My favourite room... would have to be my bedroom. I live in a modern townhouse and the master bedroom suite covers the entire top floor. I’ve never had such an indulgent space before. Obviously it’s full of all the things I love. Some old, some new ‒ a little bit boho. The thing I like the most about my house is... the newness. I never thought I’d live in a new-build house as I love period details. But what it lacks in character it makes up for in convenience. I wish I had invented the... cordless vacuum cleaner. Honestly, when you have a big hairy dog in the house it’s an absolute godsend.
The worst design disaster I’ve ever had was... I can’t honestly think of any disasters, but I do change my mind a lot.
AT HOME WITH... Carole
The place I love most in Britain is... my own country cottage in Norfolk. I wish I could get there more often as it’s in the most peaceful location on the edge of a lake. All you can hear are the birds and the geese on the lawn. The cottage itself is the opposite of my main home with simple country décor. It’s my dream to live there full -time someday.
King
When designing an interior I always... try to imagine living in the space first. I consider where I’d want to sit, the best way of moving around the room and what it will feel like to be there, how the light moves around the room at different times of the day. The layout is more important than the furnishings sometimes. My inspiration comes from... everywhere including books, magazines, travelling, exhibitions, blogs. When you’re a designer you never stop absorbing what’s around you.
If I could make over anyone’s house it would be... My friend’s house in France currently has a disused barn. I’d love to give that a makeover. I’d have great fun browsing brocantes to pick up antiques. I’d keep all the traditional features and beams, but with modern bathroom fittings, uneven white walls, and some traditional French touches to keep it quite authentic but very, very simple. The current interiors trend I love the most is.... the botanical trend. I can’t get enough of it. My home is currently showing lots of green, palm prints, and faux plants.
I think the next interiors trend will be... a lot more colourful. I can see lots of Californian and Mexican influences creeping into interiors on Pinterest such as boldly patterned ethnic prints, coloured baskets, traditional tiles - all combined with a laid-back West coast casual vibe. The best advice I ever had was... this quote from the great William Morris. “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” It’s even more true today.
Becky Faulks chats to one of the nation’s favourite interior design bloggers
If I wasn’t a designer and blogger I would be a... an estate agent probably. My guilty pleasure is browsing the ‘for sale’ sites and thinking I could do a much better job of making those houses look desirable. PERIOD IDEAS 55

The country house by the river Blackwater is a homely place to be according to Matthew Morrison, the House
Steward. Its name comes from the Irish ‘ard garradhe’ meaning ‘hill of the garden’ and it was built for Walter MacGeough, a barrister. Under the terms of his father’s will, Walter couldn’t inherit the family home whilst his sisters lived and were unmarried, so he needed his own property.
ELEGANT ELEMENTS
Walter’s house was designed in the neo-classical style and completed in 1824. “Elements of the house still impress our visitors today,” says Matthew. “The hallway has a painted marble effect and there’s an amazing staircase. It is imposing and surprises people, but Walter was making a statement and he needed a place to reflect his status as a pillar of the community.” Walter married twice, with his eldest son inheriting the family home at Drumsill and his second son, Captain Ralph Shelton, inheriting The Argory. This young man survived the Birkenhead disaster, the worst naval tragedy prior to the sinking of RMS Titanic, at the tender age of 19. Matthew explains, “We have a letter that Ralph wrote to his father just days before HMS Birkenhead was wrecked, telling him how horrific the voyage had been and how ill the people on board were.” Ralph and his fellow troops were on their way to fight in the latest war between European settlers and native South Africans in 1845. As the ship set out on the last leg of her journey, it struck a rock in the shark-infested seas. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers so the first documented order of ‘women and children first’ was given, and the soldiers famously stood firm as the ship went

down. Rudyard Kipling immortalised ‘The Birkenhead drill’ as courage in the face of hopeless circumstances. It is estimated that 70% of those on board died. Ralph saved two children and survived for five hours in the water, which he later attributed to keeping his trousers on so the sharks wouldn’t be attracted to his bare flesh.
MODERN TIMES
© NTI/Andreas von Einsiedel
Matthew says, “No one at The Argory wanted to throw anything away. Ralph kept the vest he was wearing on that fateful day and labelled it. You can still see it today in his bedroom. He was keen to modernise the house when he inherited it and had an acetylene gas plant attached to the house so that gas could be pumped inside – this was the latest modern technology before electricity became the future. As the gas lighting worked no one fixed it and the National Trust has been carefully replacing the light fittings over the years, and staff and volunteers have been carefully cleaning the 54 original fixtures to brighten up the house.” Ralph was married, but his wife spent much of her time in Dublin and they had no children. He was good to his tenants but was not in favour of the Home Rule movement and needed to manage his estate carefully, as the Land Acts altered
the status quo in terms of land ownership. On his death, The Argory passed to his nephew, Sir Walter MacGeough Bond, who had worked as a judge in Cairo, and struggled with the damp climate and an unhappy marriage. By the mid-20th century, the house was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and the political struggle cast a long shadow over Northern Ireland. The last custodian of the house was Mr Neville Bond, who like many in the Province, endured great losses during The Troubles. He survived an ambush which killed his driver and he left the country for a while, but returned to spend his latter years at The Argory. “Mr Bond’s housekeeper still works in the house as a guide, and she and her husband were very close to him,” says Matthew. “Life in a big house was not a life of pleasure but one which had particular concerns and responsibilities. Mr Bond was a real gentleman and very caring. He collected work by Ulster and Irish artists and wanted the house to survive, gifting it to The Trust in 1979. Conservation work is ongoing and next year we hope to look at light, light sources and engineering on the estate and tell some new stories about The Argory so there is plenty for us to look forward to.”

Inside story
The family intended to have a small chapel near the house but an organ was installed in the property instead with a room set aside for worship. The unique instrument is nearly 200 years old and works as a finger organ as well as cabinet barrel organ. There is a strong musical element in the house with a Steinway piano in the drawing room. BRITAIN’S HERITAGE Turn of the century
A STITCH IN TIME
Classic style This month Margaret Powling explores women’s fashion in the days of Jane Austen
A
s many will know, this year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen. What people may not know is that it is also the anniversary of a less publicised but nonetheless important event, which took place 30 years ago. I am speaking of the Hester Forbes-Julian collection, one of Torquay Museum’s most valued possessions which was rediscovered during storage improvements in 1987. Hester, known affectionately by Museum staff as Hester the Pester, was an avid collector of autographs. She did not set out to meet the people whose autographs she collected, she simply wanted their signatures. To this end, she was in the habit of scouring the local paper seeking prominent VIPs who were visiting the town (such lists were published in those days) and then losing no time inviting them to tea, knowing it would be unlikely they would have time to accept her invitation. Thus, she would receive their polite letter of refusal but also have what she desired most: another autograph for her growing collection, which eventually amounted to some 1,500 items. It is, indeed, an important collection including not only letters from John Keats, Charles Darwin, Dr Livingstone, the Duke of Wellington, and the Brontës; but also an original copy of the 1606 Privy Council warrant for the death of the Gunpowder Plotters. That there is a letter from Jane Austen comes as no surprise, but what is a surprise is that Jane’s letter – to her sister, Cassandra, written in 1799 – contains what is considered to be the first known reference to her novel, Pride and Prejudice. What I found particularly interesting, however, are Jane’s descriptions of clothes and how a young woman in 1799, when Jane was 24, was as interested in fashion as any young woman today. I will not steal Torquay Museum’s thunder by directly quoting from Jane’s letter, which will be on display, but I will say she would have looked the very glass of fashion.

“During the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the character of women’s dress changed and developed towards the new style which had emerged by the beginning of the nineteenth century, and which is usually associated with the Regency period,” says Penelope Byrde, former Curator of the Museum of Costume in Bath (now the Fashion Museum, Bath).
SEASON OF CHANGE
The stiffness and formality of earliereighteenth century dress gradually gave way to something softer, lighter and more informal, or what was considered to be more Romantic. According to Sarah Jane Downing, a freelance writer with a special interest in eighteenth and nineteenth century fashion, the simple democratic muslin had become the mainstay of fashion, and with the triumph of industrialisation it was affordable to everyone. But surely muslin wouldn’t have kept the wearer warm in un-centrally heated houses, perhaps with just an open fire in the parlour or drawing room? Keeper of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, James Laver opines: “Perhaps at no period between primitive times and the 1920s had women worn so little as they wore in the early years of the nineteenth century. All female attire seemed to have been designed for tropical climates.”
WHITE WEDDING
Little wonder that there was a passion for shawls. Great Britain began to produce imitation cashmere shawls at Paisley, and it was a considered the mark of the fashionable lady to be able to wear a shawl with grace. At the time, they formed an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe. Of course, the most important
dress for a woman was her wedding gown. “By the late eighteenth century, more frequent references are found to ‘white’ weddings, and indeed the superstitious thought it unwise to marry in any other colour,” says Shelley Tobin, Curator of Costume for the National Trust at Killerton House. However, the few surviving examples are cream coloured rather than a bright optical white, and up until that point various colours had been popular including blue and pink. Men were similarly stylish in the days when Jane Austen was writing her novels. Tightfitting knee breeches were worn during the latter eighteenth century, but from the 1790s pantaloons were also fashionable. These were a longer, closer-fitting garment, shaped to the leg and worn with boots. “In the early years of the nineteenth century, trousers, which were not fitted to the leg, were introduced for informal wear and in time could be worn in the evening as well,” says Penelope Byrde. There are, however, comparatively few references to male dress in the novels, although many of Jane’s female characters are attracted by men in naval or military uniforms. “At this period of war, with British victories abroad, the services were both visible and popular,” adds Byrde. It seems a little strange, considering how marriage was the goal for most women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, far more than it is today, that Jane Austen didn’t make more of the descriptions of bridal attire in her works. Still, no matter; her novels always ended happily ever after.

INTERIORS Style we love Autumn is a wonderful time of year and one that I always look forward to. I am constantly inspired by nature and plants. My mother used to put me in a flower bed while she did the gardening when I was little, and taught me the names of different plant species. Now I get my fix by walking in the countryside, either in the UK or while travelling with my family, where I collect and photograph plants for inspiration. My design style is constantly developing – I think it’s really important not to get stagnant. I find the change in season fascinating, and the array of colour it brings, never ceases to amaze me. I love walking through Highbury Fields (behind my studio in Islington) and collecting leaves to photograph and sketch for future designs.
NATURAL LIVING
As the weather starts to change and the days get shorter and slightly colder, now is the time to start thinking about making your home cosy and updating your interior to reflect the season ‒ texture is key and introducing the right fabrics through home accessories will help get your home ready. Sumptuous cushions and throws can transform any living area and create a feeling of comfort and warmth instantly. I use a lot of silk and linen in my work and find these wonderful fabrics add a touch of luxury. Most of my cushions are individually screen-printed by hand in our Islington studio, sewn in an East London social enterprise, and stuffed with premium duck feather inserts to ensure affordable opulence, ideal for creating a cosy interior. Layer chunky-knit, cotton and supersoft lambswool throws over sofas, ready for you to nestle into as the nights draw in. Early autumn can still bring balmy, warm nights and all these natural fabrics are great for the transition of seasons.
SOFT TOUCH
I am also a big fan of velvet because it is just so tactile, with a luscious texture that holds colour so well - I use velvet cushions in the bedroom, as I feel they are really special and help to create a luxurious haven to retire to at the end of a busy day. Natural cotton bedding is also a must! I have recently introduced two new bed linen collections, Dusk and Angeliki, using grey and plaster pink, and turquoise with deep blues, which I feel really work for the change in the two seasons. Both are a 220 cotton thread count, which is so comfortable and soft to sleep on. These two designs have coordinating wool throws and silk and linen cushions to complement the overall look, and are perfect for when autumn starts to creep in.

INTERIORS Staircases
RISE TO THE OCCASION
I
Step up your home’s appeal with these inspiring design ideas
s there anything quite so sophisticated as descending a beautiful staircase in one’s finery? For the period homeowner, a staircase can be a thing of grandeur and is often one of the most striking features of the property. The staircase is also one of the first things to see when you walk through the front door, and is therefore responsible for setting the tone of your home.
FIRST STEPS
Traditional timber staircases look beautiful in pine or oak, and the most majestic ones showcase ornately carved newels and sleek, sweeping handrails. Today, their modern counterparts are often adorned with metal fixtures and glass panels for a contemporary twist, and can incorporate carpeting to enhance comfort. Each style has its merits, and when it comes to renovating your staircase, the first decision should be whether
to preserve the original materials or invest in something totally new. There is, of course, the option to do both. Unlike most other features of your property, there are fewer opportunities to personalise a staircase as you will be restricted by spatial and structural factors. For example, you may have

always dreamt of a luxurious spiral staircase, but due to the layout of your home it is simply not practical. This is precisely why it is so important to take advantage of the elements you can change, as even minimal changes can have a large impact. The balusters are a good place to start, as these can be easily altered and a popular amalgamation of styles is to have metal balusters supporting a wooden handrail.
FINISHING TOUCH
If you don’t wish to modify the staircase itself, a popular option is to add a carpet runner for a splash of colour. Not only do these create a nice contrast against the wood or metal, they also significantly reduce the slip hazard of your stairs, making them a lot safer. If you or a loved one are less able to get around, there is also the option to install a domestic lift; these are especially useful for larger period homes as a more convenient way of moving between floors. Blend the best of old and new for a classic kitchen
P
lanning a new kitchen is a big adventure, so blaze your own trail with a scheme which suits your personality. Key looks for a period property include Shaker-style units, farmhouse chic and painted cabinetry, but there is always scope to bring something more contemporary into the mix. Inspiration is everywhere so think about colours and textures you already love and appliances which would make your life easier when gathering ideas. A period house can present its own challenges with kitchen design, so think creatively regarding the area, shape, light and features. It is vital that the space and design is balanced to avoid overcrowding. Lighting should be considered from the outset, from natural light to an enhanced lighting system, which can be used as a feature. Using symmetry is effective and bespoke units allow precision in aspect of your design, working seamlessly with your property’s quirks. “I’m always researching the history of the property we are working on, allowing the house to tell me its story,” says Natasha Amoretti, designer for Chalon. “This is important in terms of design layout and when choosing door mouldings, handles and paint colours to ensure it complements, and is line with, the property’s historical elements. Chalon has been producing period- style kitchens for over three decades and is committed to producing high-quality hand-finished and hand-painted, solid wood furniture with a timeless look.”
The trick is to be clever with the amount of space you have and maximise your storage. Be ruthless when culling items in your cupboards and ensure that you know about the latest storage solutions. Some of the best are designed by companies like Blum, which takes research into ergonomics (the science of how people relate to their built environment) very seriously. Given that we are all living longer and each successive generation is getting taller and broader, you may need to think about how your kitchen it might work for you and your partner when you get a little older. Easy-to-read controls and simple on and off switches are sensible solutions which should make life easier for everyone in the household.
Choose a bespoke design to suit your own period home from Parlour Farm. 01285 885 336, parlourfarm.com
SMART DESIGN
If you are drawn to having a more contemporary look, then all-white units will provide an instant update and make a smaller space feel brighter. But bear in mind that a glossy finish will be high maintenance and white can be unforgiving when it comes to everyday stains and spills. Consider fashionable greys or pale blues for a softer look and try adding a wooden worktop for a homely feel in the workzone. It’s true that you will need to give your worktop some TLC by treating it with oil to protect it from wear and tear but whilst laminate worktops can become marked and damaged overtime, a wooden wonder will become deeper and richer with time, if it is looked after properly. Scratches can be carefully sanded away and a worktop can even be returned to its former glory with the use of specialist oil.

Give your cabinets and drawers a new lease of life with Recuro Styling
stablished in 1966, Recuro Styling has long been recognised as a leading company for specialist refinishing in the South East, and is a respected name in the home renovation industry. Having refinished existing doors and drawer fronts for nearly 50 years, the company expanded to its current business in 2014, when its innovative team saw a gap in the market to supply new products.
COLOURFUL COMMISSIONS
Today, Recuro manufactures bespoke, madeto-measure doors and drawer fronts suitable for home and commercial use, and has worked with clients nationwide. A family-owned business, Recuro uses only the highest quality products and
coatings to create durable pieces unique to each customer. The company is perhaps best known for its vibrant and diverse colour scheme, and can match almost any colour from Farrow & Ball, Dulux, RAL, The Little Greene and NCS palettes, or create bespoke colours for individual projects. Recuro Sales Administrator Mark Richardson says: “The best thing about the job is the customer satisfaction we get on delivery of our products.” Recuro is based in a 12,000 square foot factory in Essex, the heart of which contains two state-of-the-art commercial spray booths which ensure every product is given a dustfree, durable coating. It also offers a choice of finishes including mirror gloss, satin and matt, and all Recuro doors are available in handleless, slab and Shaker styles.
ONE OF A KIND
Looking to the future, the company hopes to extend its range into Perspex and glass splashbacks, and the Recuro team are always working together to improve the company. “Due to the size and nature of the products, it has been a learning curve to find the right transportation and packing methods,” says Mark, “but we feel we have conquered that issue.” With a friendly team at the end of the phone and a broad social media presence (including
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, among others), Recuro is dedicated to communicating with its customers and understanding their needs to provide an excellent service. “We are a family owned company and will always work with our customers to accommodate their budget whenever possible,” Mark explains. “Our quality is stunning and every product is truly unique.” PERIOD IDEAS 83

This season’s bedroom trends are the perfect complement to the cooler weather
hile the changing seasons may limit our time in the garden, the shorter days see our interiors schemes come to life. With the falling temperature comes the chance to get creative with our décor as the focus shifts indoors, and bedrooms in particular come into their own. Gone are the days of single sheets spread across a mattress; from October onwards, duvets, blankets and rich colour schemes all begin to make a reappearance.
COLOUR COMFORT
Midnight blues and dusky pinks are both popular for AW17, both of which work well as part of a soft bedroom scheme. Checked patterns are also in style, so investing in a traditional tartan blanket or throw can instantly bring your décor up to speed. Tartan is at home in both town and country settings, and looks great when paired with block colours and classic décor. It comes in a wide variety of colours, with paler shades
perfect for a more understated look. If tartan doesn’t appeal, the woodland trend is also an option. Whether it’s animal illustrations on bedding and walls, or simply a combination of dark greens, purples and browns to evoke the forest feel, this calming scheme is perfect for the one room that’s designed around getting some rest (see p64 for more ideas). Finally, it is worth remembering that both tartan designs and woodland hues lend themselves nicely to creating a theme for Christmas, so be on the lookout for decorative pieces such as tasseled bed throws and themed scatter cushions to add to the look.
the bedding can make a difference. High quality flannel bed sheets are great for providing extra warmth and softness, and can be teamed with blankets and throws for a cosy winter scheme. Natural linen is also ideal, as its high air permeability and heat conductivity properties will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Chunky knits are popular at this time of the year, but your bed isn’t the only place they look at home. For an original and comforting touch, consider investing in some knitted furniture, such as a stool, beanbag or even a chair.
WARM WELCOME
When it comes to luxury, we just can’t get enough of it. Whether it’s a fluffy throw, plush cushion or strokeable velvet headboard, tactile materials are at the top of this season’s agenda. Updating your bed is possibly the easiest way to refresh the look of a room, and even changing

Sleep tight
Expert advice on how to find the bed of your dreams
M
ore so than most furniture in the home, it is easy to form a sentimental attachment to your bed. Considering we spend roughly one third of our lives asleep, it is only natural for beds to become so important to us, which is why it can be daunting to replace them. That said, a new bed can change the entire ambience of a room without the hassle of redecorating, so if your bedroom is getting tired, buying a bed can be the perfect solution.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS
The first thing to determine is size. It’s important to consider the dimensions of any space before attempting to fill it, and smaller rooms especially require careful planning of layout and arrangement. A bed is often the focal point of the room, however a bed that’s too big can make a room feel cramped and restrict space for other bedroom furniture. With this in mind, the best thing to do is to buy the biggest bed your room
can reasonably accommodate, rather than one that will only just fit. Undoubtedly, the defining feature of any bed is the bedstead; it is the first thing people notice and holds the greatest design potential. Ornately carved headboards and regal four posters reign supreme when it comes to elegance, and if you are looking for a statement bed they definitely come recommended. However there is a wealth of simple yet stylish bedsteads available for those who prefer an understated look. Metal bedframes spring to mind as they boast a certain refined glamour, and perfectly complement an industrial design scheme. Or if your bedroom has more of an eclectic feel, sleigh beds work equally well with traditional and contemporary décor, and come with the choice of upholstered or wooden bedsteads. A bed is the one space you should feel most comfortable in, and so whichever one you choose it’s important to make sure it is a place you want to be.

Beautiful dreamer Discover a great night’s sleep with Abaca’s organic Italian-style mattresses
O
nce upon a time, a long time ago, everything that we slept on was made with natural materials. In those days there were no chemicals, no fire retardants, and no one slept on a mattress made from artifical fibres. The development of industrialised farming changed that world completely, but Abaca is striving to give its customers an opportunity to experience the sort of sleep that our ancestors enjoyed. “Organic mattresses are made with materials that have been grown or produced without the use of chemicals,” says Rhiannon Rowley, Abaca’s founder. “We take the best materials and hand make mattresses which are stuffed full with wool, cotton and horsehair. These materials have long been used to make the best traditional mattresses, but we have gone one step further and employed a time-honoured Italian method which we believe is unique in the UK.” The very best long staple organic wool is thoroughly washed, hand carded and carefully layered onto woven organic cotton to make an Abaca Nolton mattress. Once
the wool layer is sufficiently deep, a similar depth of horsehair is carefully spread over it, then another layer of wool is added.
MATERIAL WORLD
At that point a final layer of organic cotton is put over the top and the two pieces of cotton are sewn together. At this point it looks like a huge overstuffed cushion, but hand sewing the edges and hand tufting turns it into a gloriously comfortable mattress.
“These mattresses need to be loved and looked after and regularly turned, but once the fibre has compressed a certain amount, you will have something that will last for many years,” says Rhiannon. “Eventually a time will come when the mattress starts to harden, and at that point we will have it back, open it up, re-card the wool and horsehair inside, add some new fibre, and sew it back up again. So what you have bought is a mattress for life!”
ORGANIC PLANET
Abaca’s range of organic mattresses can be made with pocket springs, organic latex or natural fibre. “We specialise in making mattresses in any size or shape from a Moses basket to a whopping three-metre wide mattress that was commissioned recently,” says Rhiannon. “We deliver to all parts of the UK, and indeed all over the world. An organic mattress will give you the quality of sleep that our great-grandparents took for granted, so do contact us so that you too can sleep as nature intended!” PERIOD IDEAS 93

Find the right way to warm up your home this winter
n original fireplace in your property provides a wonderful connection with the past, evoking the families who have shared stories around the fireside and cooked there. And if you’re keen to reinstate period features, an eye-catching fireplace is a lovely place to start. In medieval and Tudor times, fireplace and chimneys were regarded as status symbols as well as being the latest technology, and today this can still be the case. With the need to protect the planet and limit emissions, fireplace and heating manufacturers are keen to develop new products which meet exacting environmental standards. Regardless of what happens with Brexit, new EU laws coming into force in 2022 mean that wood-burning stoves will need to be at least 80% efficient. The Stove Industry Alliance is working with manufacturers to ensure that they can meet this target, so look for stoves labelled ‘Ecodesign Ready’ to help future-proof your heating.
HIGH-TECH HEAT
Another important thing to note is that some stoves also come with cleanburn or cleanheat technology, which essentially means that air is introduced to the stove, helping to burn off more of the smoke and gases which increases
efficiency. It also makes sense to buy a stove with the CE mark so you’re assured that it meets the European safety and efficiency standards for stoves in the UK. If you’ve been blessed with a fireplace in your property, don’t assume that you can build a fire and start roasting chestnuts without a care in the world. It is always advisable to seek professional advice from a chimney sweep, especially if you don’t know how well the chimney has been maintained and to make sure you have working smoke detectors. Remember that gas/oil flues also need sweeping.

Remember that your safety needs to be paramount if you have an open fire so don’t take any chances. There should be a good clear area all around the chimney breast – your furniture shouldn’t be too close and nor should you, as sparks might catch your clothes and ignite. It depends on the size of the fire, but leave at least 1.5m for small ones and 2-3m for larger ones. As a guide, if it feels too hot, or if you touch the side of anything near the fire and it’s too hot, move things further away. Keep logs and coal away from the fire so they don’t heat up or be caught by any sparks leaping from the fire. Do use fireguards, particularly if you’re burning wood, as this fuel tends to spit more. Make sure the carpet hasn’t been laid right up to where the fire is, if you’ve uncovered it. And finally, if you have placed a nice deeppile rug down in front of the fire, you should definitely use a fireguard, as the fibres can catch more easily.

The benefits of starting afresh are well-documented, but it pays to consider the alternatives
ith phrases like ‘new beginnings’, ‘good as new’ and ‘new and improved‘ all carrying positive connotations, it’s easy to get the impression that new is always better. But if you’re living in a period property, this isn’t necessarily the case. While it may be tempting to replace older features in your home with modern replicas, it is important to first consider why the original features have stood the test of time in the first place. Of course, when it comes to windows that are rotten, bricks that have cracked, or even new projects requiring additional materials,
some purchases are inevitable. But new doesn’t have to mean modern, and using reclaimed materials is a great compromise between staying true to your home’s origins and adding your own touch. “If you are extending, renovating or landscaping a period property, it’s impossible to create an authentic period look without using recycled building and landscaping materials,” explains Mark Hassall at Authentic Reclamation, which supplies reclaimed building materials in the South East and beyond. “The patina that forms over one hundred years of weathering and ageing just can’t be reproduced with new materials.”
MATERIAL WORLD

If you’re looking for timber, reclaimed goods come with a whole host of benefits. When you buy reclaimed timber, you’re likely to be using old growth wood, which would have been felled at a time when trees grew more slowly than they do today. The growth rings in the timber will be more tightly packed, creating a stronger building material that is more resistant to woodworm and rot. In addition to this, the timber will also be more stable, meaning it will expand and contract less when exposed to humidity so you’ll be left with a unique and characterful creation that’s built to last.
Norfolk Reclaim supplies reclaimed building materials and architectural salvage. 01328 864 743, norfolkreclaim.co.uk
Of course, we can’t forget the environment. In addition to the benefits above, using reclaimed materials will also save trees, emissions from logging, processing and transportation, and millions of kilograms of waste so you’ll be helping preserve nature as well as your home. So if you’ve decided to start your next project using reclaimed materials, you may now be wondering where to find them. Luckily, this is the easy part as your local reclamation yard will provide you with everything you need, as well as professional advice and sometimes even delivery. PERIOD IDEAS 103

Take the floor Pave the way to perfect flooring with Period Ideas
M
odern life can feel like standing on shifting sands, and as such there is no greater comfort than the sanctuary of home. For most, home comforts consist of cosy beds and bubbling baths, but it is what lies beneath your feet that is the true foundation of your household. As always, practicalities play an important role in the decision-making process. A key factor is how much wear and tear you expect your floors to endure, which is influenced by how much traffic there is likely to be in your home and any pets you may have. From a longevity standpoint, stone makes for the sturdiest flooring and is often the perfect companion for period décor. Alternatively, if you’re seeking a softer feel, there is an infinite range of carpets available in every colour and pattern imaginable. Carpets immediately make a space feel warmer and juxtapose the harsher materials in the room to create a harmonious ambience. If you’re at all unsure about which flooring material would suit your home, seeing them all under one roof can really help. Flooring Megastore is a one-stop shop for all your flooring needs, so you can compare everything from artificial grass to quirky carpets. (01622 790 356, flooringmegastore.co.uk)

FABULOUS FLOORS

Wood flooring is another popular choice owing to its classic appeal and versatility. Many architects and interior designers favour European wood for its attractive colour and durability properties. Natural wood varies in hue from light grey to chestnut brown, and while lighter colours are ideal for opening up a room, they are more susceptible to stains and so it may be wise to employ a shoes-off policy if you are going down this route. Adding a rug is also an option in this case, as it will not only protect your floor but can
also make a stylish centrepiece. A rug with an ornate design can really draw the eye and stand out nicely against the block colour of the floor. Of course, there is no rule which states you must stick to one type of flooring throughout your home. Certain materials are better suited to particular rooms; wood, for example, is ideal in the living room as it can tolerate heavy footfall, tile is the perfect bathroom flooring thanks to its waterproof quality, and cosy carpets are often favoured for bedrooms. Flooring is a long-term investment, and when chosen carefully, it is well worth the effort. PERIOD IDEAS 107

Renovating QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
OUTSIDE CHANCE Make the most of your outside space with expert advice on conservatories and outbuildings
OUTDOOR INSPIRATION I love being out in the garden, but with the weather getting colder I’ll soon be stuck inside. What can I do? Have you thought about investing in a shepherd’s hut? They can make a lovely compromise between staying warm and dry and enjoying the great outdoors, and they don’t even take up a huge amount of space. Here at Blackdown Shepherd Huts, we’ve taken our inspiration from original structures and adapted them for modern living, which affords you the luxury of a little more room. We would love to meet you in person, make you a cup of tea and then show you around our display huts and our workshop, so call us today for a chat and a free, full colour brochure. Will Vickery, Blackdown Shepherd’s Huts 01460 929 774, blackdownshepherdhuts.co.uk
BEST OF BOTH
I’d love a sheltered place to sit in the garden but I don’t have space for a building. Is there a solution?
Ben Carpenter Photography
Our Apple day bed makes the perfect compromise, as it provides you with a comfortable place to sit and relax as well as both shelter and privacy. It swivels 360° so you can follow the sun, and its outdoor rattan-weave is UV resistant, tolerant to a wide range of temperatures, and looks and feels like authentic rattan. The Apple day bed comes in a variety of colours and is also environmentally friendly, giving you all the more reason to feel good about your purchase. Phil Aston, The Garden Furniture Centre Ltd 01564 793 652, gardenfurniturecentre.co.uk
A WORLD APART I’d love somewhere to relax and enjoy the garden, but I don’t want to commit to an extension. What can I do? We think our shepherd huts are the answer to that question! They’re not only wonderfully versatile and unique, but also suitable for a variety of uses, whether you need extra room for your guests, a home office, or simply just a place to slip away to and watch the sun go down. Our huts are warm, windproof and wired for the modern world, and best of all they need no planning permission (although we do recommend that you check with your local authority), so that you can get started right away. MOTOR HOME
My car is difficult to start when I leave it outdoors overnight, but I don’t have a garage. Is there an easy way around this? If you have the space for one, our oak-framed garages can be really handy – and not just for keeping the car happy. Garages with one or two bays are enormously popular and can incorporate many different designs and features. You could add on a secure, locked room for tools or a garden store, and by maximising the roof area, you could even incorporate a first floor. These structures also have the advantage of not always needing planning permission, but you should always check with your local authority to make sure. Simon Hendriksen, Crown Oak Buildings 01732 866 910, crownoakbuildings.co.uk
BLIND LUCK Will blinds keep my conservatory warmer during winter? Absolutely – and cooler in the summer as well. While it’s a common issue for conservatories to get uncomfortably hot on sunny days, most conservatory owners are surprised at how chilly and uninviting the room can be during the evening or on colder days of the year. Correctly specified conservatory roof blinds, particularly wood weave Pinoleum or honeycomb Duette® fabrics, will assist in reducing heat loss, helping to moderate the temperature to create a comfortable conservatory for you all day and evening, throughout the entire year. Sarah Edwards, Conservatory Blinds Limited 0800 071 8888, conservatoryblinds.co.uk
STATEMENT PIECE I’d like an outbuilding that sets my garden apart. What would you recommend? Our Viking range of Kota grill barbecue huts certainly makes a statement! All huts come with seating, cushions and a barbecue grill with a chimney, meaning you can entertain whatever the weather. We can offer a full installation service, and if you would like to view one of our Viking Kota grills in person, you are welcome to visit our garden buildings show site at Long Sutton in Lincolnshire. We have our 9.2m Viking Grill Kota, Twin 9.2m Viking Grill Kota and a 16.5m Grill Kota all on display. Mark Harris, Hallgate Timber 01406 363 978, hallgate-timber.co.uk
CLASSIC SPIN
My conservatory is filled with wicker furniture – do you have a ceiling fan that will go with this? Our wicker outdoor fan is a safe bet. It’s unique to the UK and IP-rated, which makes it suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The oval-shaped wicker blades will complement your furniture perfectly, and you can choose whether or not to include a light. Now that the weather is cooling down, it may seem counter-intuitive to install a ceiling fan, but used on the right setting your fan can actually help keep your living space warm. It will helpfully re-circulate warm air around the room, saving you money on your heating bills. Richard Moore, Fantasia Ceiling Fans 01959 564 440, fantasiaceilingfans.com

Window WONDER Make your windows a feature to be proud of with our expert advice
I
f the eyes are the windows to the soul, windows are the eyes of your home. A fundamental feature, they can hugely influence both the exterior impression and the interior atmosphere. Windows can make a room feel larger, and of course the bigger the window the lighter the room. This in turn affects decisions such as colour schemes, wall and floor design, and furniture layout. Without windows we would all be living in dark, gloomy buildings that hardly felt like homes at all. After taking all this into consideration, it seems only natural that your windows receive the right care and attention.
FRESH START
The first question to ask is whether your windows need restoring. For period homeowners this is often the case, but it can

be tricky to restore original windows without eroding the character of the home. Luckily, there are companies which specialise in working with older windows, and even if you are skilled in DIY, this is definitely a job that’s best left to the experts. Once you have ensured your windows are in good condition, you can begin to think about updating your window furniture, as if the windows are old enough to need restoring, chances are the fastenings have seen better days. Monkey tail fastenings look particularly at home on traditional casement windows, and elegant pieces like these can make the quintessential period home accessory. Once your windows have been fully restored, you can finally return your attention to the blinds, curtains or shutters; whichever takes your fancy.

INSPIRED IDEAS
If you’re looking to incorporate a modern twist, feature windows which cover an entire wall are becoming increasingly popular. Similarly, ceilingto-floor windows not only invite a constant stream of light, but are perfect for showcasing a beloved garden or scenic landscape. Recent innovations have seen windows and doors combine to form beautiful glass-panelled entries, ideal for blurring the boundary between outdoor and indoor and really making the exterior space feel like part of the home. For the avid reader, there is nothing more relaxing than settling down with a good book in front of a glorious bay window. Whatever your passion, there are endless possibilities when it comes to windows, so whether you like simple panes or statement stained-glass, you’ll thank yourself for seeing your ambitions through.

LAST WORD Bricks & mortar
It’s vital to make sure things are kept well out of the way
KATE FAULKNER
ESSENTIAL PROPERTY ADVICE This month our expert guides us through the process of creating a pet-friendly home
A
the end of last year, an eight-week-old Dalmatian called Wizard brought some magic into my life and I joined the 44%* of the UK population who own a pet. He is a huge joy but I did spend several months before he arrived ensuring the place was suitable for a new pup.
PET-PROOF
The first few months after he moved in were spent with a cloth and some disinfectant spray permanently at hand, and thanks to a series of moveable metal panels, I managed to restrict Wizard’s movements around the house so that my floors, contents and the pup were kept out of harm’s way. It’s important to ensure gardens are safe, so I had a gardener check there were no weeds or plants that were poisonous to animals, and you also have to make sure pets can’t get out – unless it’s a cat, as they can wander. I had a wall and fence built, as well as a wire net put around the gate, which was expensive, but well worth it! Indoors, dogs seem to have a
natural ability to find the most expensive thing you own and chew it, or eat it whole, which in a period home may be beautiful skirting boards or panelling; while cats will scratch and may bring back ‘presents’ such as birds or mice – always when most inconvenient. All will find their way to bedrooms to sleep at some point, which you may or may not want, so you need to think through how you will prevent this from happening. This is especially true if you live in a rural area where it’s easy to pick up spreadable fleas and worms, although you should, of course, treat pets for these regardless. It’s vital to make sure things are put well out of the way (by all the family), so I have lots of small and large boxes and baskets with lids in each room to help ensure shoes, jewellery, papers etc. are all kept in safe places. And, if you have coffee tables, you may, like me, have to re-think as tails and noses can cause a great deal of damage at this height. If you’re planning on refurbishing a period property, it’s not wise to introduce a pet into your life. Such work can present all manner of hazards, not to mention strangers coming in
KATE FAULKNER katefaulkner.co.uk
and out of the house. In my current home, the workmen hadn’t been great at clearing things and my previous dog, Nelson the Alsatian, had a scan at the vet which revealed a series of screws making their way through his body. Remarkably they did him no harm, but it’s very easy for pets to pick up something that could do damage and you don’t want the expense of vet bills eating into your restoration budget and timings.
PLANNING AHEAD
Before the renovation or if you are moving house, consider how your property would best survive a new member. Work out which areas they will be ‘allowed’ access to. Where will they stay if you go to work? Where will they sleep? And will they go to kennels/catteries or will you have somewhere else they can stay – both as babies and as they get older? This is definitely a case where planning and preparation will pay off. If you are incredibly house-proud, you may have to take a few deep breaths while pets are growing up, as I’m afraid whatever your plans are they may end up changing, and adapting your home and your philosophy might be required. The time to be most concerned about your pet’s impact on your home is when you are selling. Most agents will advise removing evidence of pets for viewings – not everybody is a fan of an over-enthusiastic hound or even a diffident cat. On the other hand, an escape-proof garden filled with dog-friendly plants could turn out to clinch the deal! Finally, dare I mention the smell? You may be immune to it, but make sure your home is free of all pet odours, and not just by using strong air fresheners – these can arouse suspicion that you are covering up something worse, such as damp or mould. Overall, the more time and effort you put into making sure you have a pet-friendly home, the more you can enjoy both and relax knowing that both your belongings and pet are safe. *Source: pfma.org.uk/pet-population-2017
