Inquiry 13 Analysis David Fan Mr. Chesbro P-2 1. What is the solubility of sodium nitrate that your group measured: 0.87 g/ml 2. Look at the class data and calculate an average solubility for sodium nitrate 0.76 g/ml 3. What is the solubility of sodium chloride that your group measured: 0.34 g/ml 4. Look at the class data and calculate an average solubility for sodium chloride: 0.3 g/ml 5. Look at the average solubility for NaCl for the class (0.3 g/ml). Explain what the numbers and units actually mean. Convince me that you get it. The average solubility was 0.3 g/ml. Solubility is the amount of solute required to form a saturated solution in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature. This means that for every milliliter of solvent in a saturated solution of H2O and NaCl, there are 0.3 grams of solute dissolved in it. The unit for solute is grams, because the solute is solid in our case. The unit for solvent is ml because it’s liquid. 6. What was the temperature in the classroom the day of the experiment? 22°C 7. How close do your measurements come to what the graph on Physical Science text page 95 says they should be? If the numbers are different explain why that might be the case Yes. Ironically, everyone else was off by more 8. Are different substances equally soluble in water? How do you know? No, solubility is a characteristic property, so it’s unique to a substance. You can tell because it takes different amounts of different substances to form a saturated solution in a given solvent 9. How could you use the property of solubility to help you identify a type of matter? Solubility is unique to a substance, so you could conduct an experiment to determine the solubility of that matter inside a given solvent, and see which substance it coincides with on a chart of the solubility of various substances 10. How is the property of solubility like density? Solubility describes the amount of solute in a given amount of solvent, while density describes the amount of matter in a given amount of space (volume) 11. Is solubility a physical or a chemical property? Why? It is a physical property because it can be observed without changing the chemical identity of a substance 12. What do you think will happen to the solubility of a substance if you try to dissolve it in warmer water? Why? It will increase, because the particles will be more agitated, so more energy will be available to break apart bonds and dissolve the mixtures
