Touched by an Angel by Maya Angelou We, unaccustomed to courage exiles from delight live coiled in shells of loneliness until love leaves its high holy temple and comes into our sight to liberate us into life. Love arrives and in its train come ecstasies old memories of pleasure ancient histories of pain. Yet if we are bold, love strikes away the chains of fear from our souls. We are weaned from our timidity In the flush of love's light we dare be brave And suddenly we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free. This poem compares love to something or someone that relieves and liberates us from loneliness and depression. I like this poem because it shows the power of love and denounces hate. Hate can never bring good things; it can only bring bad things. People are missing love in their soul, and need it back. People can run all they want from love, but it will never go away. While love brings many hardships, it will set us free in the end by revealing a new person, and our beauty underneath. The angel referred to in this poem is not really an angel. It’s a symbol for unexpectedness and swiftness, as love can be. This poem also calls for people to cherish what they have. You may not realize how you feel about something until it disappears. Then, you will feel the pain. Until someone embraces love and acceptance in their heart, they will not know their true person. Provocative language, such as in line twelve reveal that if we take the chance to open up ourselves to love again, our fears from the past will be liberated. This poem ends with a note of hope, for people.
