Introduction to the NSBM Library The NSBM Library offers its students a location of quiet for contemplation and study. It is the core resource centre of the Institute which is geared to cater to information, curriculum and research needs of its students and staff members. Complete with a useful and an ever expanding collection of textbooks, manuals, periodicals, academic journals and CDs the primary goal of the Library is to support the learning culture that pervades throughout this Institute of higher education. The NSBM Library, the store house of knowledge, is gaining strength and stature in terms of the number of volumes and the coverage which now range from essential text books and manuals to classics on philosophy, management and research methodology. In addition, acclaimed bestsellers in management have also been added recently. The library also contains a growing collection of academic journals and periodicals of interest. Further, it possesses a good collection of Sinhala and English fiction aimed at stimulating the aesthetic sense of students which forms part of a holistic education. Students of NSBM now have access to a wide range of scholarly articles through the EMERALD data base. Through the data base they can reach 215 widely acclaimed academic journals at the push of a button. Further, the excellent collection of CDs is the envy of anyone. The NSBM Library provides a wide range of services to its users. The library personnel who are extremely courteous with expertise in library sciences will ensure that the time you spend in the Library is both productive and enjoyable. We invite you to make use of the Library to the full which undoubtedly will be an aid to realization of your cherished goal at the NSBM. The NSBM Library Hours

Monday to Sunday

8.00am - 5.30pm

The Library will be open all seven days of the week, Monday through Sunday, from 8.00 am – 5.30 pm. It will only be closed on Mercantile holidays, Poya days and special holidays declared by the NSBM.

The NSBM Library – Sections BOOKS AND AUDIO-VISUAL SECTION The Books and Audio-Visual Section is organized under three categories: Lending, Reference and Permanent Reference.

Lending Section This section consists of volumes encompassing a wide range of disciplines including Management, Information Technology, Multi-media and Interior Design which are of relevance to students of various programmes of study. All registered students at NSBM are entitled to borrow books from the

lending section In a separate section, the library maintains a fair collection of fiction, both English and Sinhala, as well as books of general interest. The library also contains a modest collection of audio-visual material which keeps expanding.

Reference Section Text books, essential readings, audio-visual material and other publications recommended by teaching faculty but are available in limited quantities are included in this section. They are to be referred seated in the library. However, there is a scheme under which they can be borrowed for a day. That is the book is released in the evening to be returned the following morning. Reference books can be identified with the red-colour ‘R’ label on the on the spine of the book.

Permanent Reference Section This consists of a wide range of material including encyclopedias, dictionaries, data books, annual reports and other essential reading material such as text books prescribed by the teaching faculty. They will not be allowed to be taken away under any circumstances. Permanent Reference books can be identified with the red-colour ‘PR’ label identified on the spine of the book.

JOURNALS AND PERIODICALS Academic Journals and periodicals are for reference purposes only. They are arranged in the chronological/ alphabetical order. However, readership is permitted to take photocopies of journal/ periodical articles in limited quantities subject to the library regulations and provisions of the copyrights law of the country.

THESES AND DISSERTATIONS Bound volumes of theses and dissertations of students of different programmes are arranged in a separate section. A catalogue of the volumes is available with the librarian. They are available for reference purposes only. Thus, taking photocopies of the volumes in full or in part is not allowed under normal circumstances.

MULTI-MEDIA MATERIAL Multi-media material encompassing management, academic, cultural, art and documentaries are housed in the library. Copies of multi-media material can be borrowed.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES NSBM library has subscribed to the EMERALD data base to enable students and staff to peruse rserach publications on a wide variety of disciplines such as General Management, Management Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Logistics Tourism and Hospitality Management and Engineering. Past and current issues of 220 journals can be accessed via www.emeraldinsight.com. There are no restrictions on the number of downloads. Staff and students of the final two years may request for username and password from the Librarian to access EMERALD outside the university premises.

NEWSPAPERS A wide range of news papers, both dailies and weeklies, are displayed on newspaper-stands. Past issues for a limited period of time can also be requested for perusing.

ARCHIVAL COLLECTION Miscellaneous publications by the NSBM such as handbooks, by-laws, conference proceedings, prospectuses are included in this section. They are available for reference purposes only.

The NSBM Library Services Offered LENDING OF BOOKS All registered students and staff members are entitled to borrow books from the lending section. Books are usually lent for a period of two weeks. Reference books are issued from 05.00 – 05.30 pm each day which have to be returned by 9 am the following morning.

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN SCHEME Under this scheme the library will make arrangements to secure a book/ journal article that is not available in the NSBM library from another library which provides similar facilities. Further, NSBM library maintains direct links with the libraries of the NIBM library network spread over the country.

READING ROOM NSBM library membership has the facility of engaging in reading and reference work in the spacious reading area of the library. It provides a most conducive environment to work in the quiet among shelves of publications.

COMPUTER-INTERNET FACILITIES There is limited space for students to make use of computer-internet facilities in the library. This facility is available during regular library hours. A user may spend a maximum of 120 minutes per day split into any number of sessions subject to a maximum of 60 minutes per log-in.

FACILITY TO PHOTOCPY The photocopying machine is available where students and staff can get photocopies of reference material at a nominal fee.

RETRIEVAL OF MATERIAL The library staff shall assist with the retrieval of library material on request by the users. This will be further facilitated by the computer tracking system available in the library.

DISPLAY BOARD The display board displays important notices pertaining to the library, NSBM, new arrivals as well as academic matters of significance. -6-


The NSBM Library Membership TYPES OF LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP Gaining library membership enables students to make use of the varied services provided by the library. Registered students of NSBM automatically become members of the library who are entitled to receive basic services offered such as doing reference work, reading papers and getting material photocopied. However, in order to make use of the lending facility of the library students are required to register formally with the library.

PROCEDURE TO BORROW BOOKS In order to borrow books NSBM students are required to register with the library by submitting the following along with the receipt of the refundable deposit made at the cashier, NSBM. i. Duly completed membership form obtainable from the library ii. Student Identity Card iii. National Identity Card Two library tickets will be issued per student. They are not transferable. The holder of the library tickets is responsible for any library material issued under them. Use of the library tickets of another person is a punishable offence. The loss of a library ticket should be reported to the librarian immediately. A duplicate copy can be obtained on the payment of a replacement charge of Rs. 100.

ENTITLEMENT TO BOOKS Both undergraduate level as well as postgraduate level students are entitled to two books which they could keep for a period of two weeks. When borrowing books the library may request for the student identity card from the student. A fine will be levied for each day of delay for overdue books and other material.

OVERDUE CHARGES Fines for overdue material are calculated excluding holidays from the date mentioned on the due slip of the library material. If the user fails to return the borrowed items on due date:

A fine of Rs. 20 per day is imposed for each book/ material borrowed after the due date until the date of return.

A fine of Rs. 100 per day will be imposed for each reference book borrowed for over-night use and not retuned by 9.00 am the following day.

All payments should be paid at the circulation desk and the receipt should be produced at the circulation counter.

(The rates will be reviewed and revised from time to time)

RESERVATION OF BOOKS A book, if not available on the self, can be reserved on a form available for the purpose with the library assistant. On receipt of the book from the current borrower the person who has reserved it will be contacted by the library.

RECALL OF BOOKS The librarian may recall borrowed material at any time and the borrower must return them immediately when called to do so.

RENEWAL OF BOOKS Books borrowed by users can be renewed for a further two weeks if another user has not reserved them. However, renewal beyond two terms is not allowed. Further, overdue books will not be renewed. Renewal of books can be carried out only by bringing the material by self or a third party.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ADDITIONS Users are invited to suggest additions viz. books, manuals, periodicals, journals and CDs. A form to make the requests is available at the library.

LOST/ DAMAGED BOOKS It’s the responsibility of the borrower to safeguard library material borrowed from the library. A damage or loss caused to library material has to be reported to the librarian immediately. A letter stating the extent of the damage and reasons has to be handed to the librarian in order to initate action for replacement or payment for compensation. In such a situation the

borrower is required to replace the lost/ damaged book/ CD/DVD-ROM by a new and unused copy of the same author(s), title and edition. However, the old edition can be replaced by a copy of the latest edition. Alternatively, compensation is required to be paid as determined by the library authority. Replacement/ payment of compensation has to be completed within seven days after informing the librarian of the mishap by letter.

CLEARANCE On completion of the course a student has registered for or on termination of the studentship a student could claim the refundable deposit by returning all the material borrowed and producing the duly filled clearance from (obtainable from the library).

The NSBM Library Etiquette All users must adhere to the rules and regulations of the library. Any disorderly or improper behavior or breach of regulations will render the reader or borrower concerned liable for suspension of the library facilities or at any other time when called upon to do so. The library is open to all NSBM students and the staff. Readers must produce their Student Identity Card/ National Identity Card when entering the library, borrowing books or at any other time when called upon to do so. Readers are not permitted to bring bags, parcels, personal books, spiral binding, envelopes, any kind of file covers, umbrellas, water bottles or any other personal belongings into the library. They have to be placed in the racks outside prior to entering the library. However, valuable items such as jewelry or cash should not be kept in these racks. The library staff will not be held responsible for loss of such material. Silence should be observed in the library. Mobile phones should be switched off inside the library. Any kind of discussions, meetings, group study or any other type of noise is not allowed inside the library. The library is a place for self-study. Users should respect the needs of others. Reservation of library seats and computer terminals is not allowed. One computer terminal is for one user only. Consumptions of food and drinks and the use of personal audio-/ video equipment in the library is strictly prohibited. All library material and other resources should be treated and protected as national resources. Tearing, writing, misusing books; stealing chapters of books and taking books out without permission are punishable offenses. Such users are liable for disciplinary action such as suspension from use of the library and cancellation of student membership.

Users are not allowed to accompany any visitors to the library without obtaining prior permission from the library. Taking photographs inside the library is not allowed without prior approval of the institutional authorities. It is mandatory that users are properly attired when entering the library. They are not allowed to be present in inappropriate clothing such as shorts, hats, caps, sunglasses etc.

The NSBM Library Classification System In the NSBM library the standard classification system called Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is used. This is a system used widely in libraries the world over. It is used for placing books on library shelves giving a specific location to every material for easy tracking and to return it to its specific place. There are ten main classifications in this system with each divided into ten sub-categories with each of them again sub-divided into 10 more classes thus ending up with 999 classes. The DDC numbering system in operation with the ten main classes:
