JCC SWIM ACADEMY GROUP LESSONS INFANT PARENT AQUATICS PROGRAM
6 - 30 MOS
This 30-minute class is for children ages 6-30 months and their parents. The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. ISR - ROLLBACK-TO-FLOAT 6 - 12 MOS Babies 6-12 months old are very active and surprisingly quick! The Rollback-to-Float program introduces the correct floating posture for survival as well as the skills necessary to maneuver into a float. Babies learn quickly from their physical environment. This is how they learn to crawl and walk. But water is an unforgiving environment. For this reason aquatic skills for the infant and toddler must be taught by a certified ISR instructor. These skills will be practiced for complete mastery even while fully clothed with diaper and shoes. ISR - SWIM-FLOAT-SWIM 13 MOS - 4 YRS The Swim-Float-Swim program encompasses the skills necessary for a child to reach the steps, edge of the pool or shore. This includes swimming and floating. This process begins with teaching the child breath control and the skills to turn around in the water to grab the edge. As the child becomes capable of longer swims the rollback-to-float is taught so the child can rest and breathe, then continue swimming. This sequence can be repeated indefinitely until the child reaches safety. These skills will be practiced for complete mastery even while fully clothed with shoes and diaper for those not toilet trained. ISR - REFRESHER LESSONS 6 MOS - 4 YRS Almost every parent asks if their baby or young child will really remember what they have learned. The answer is "YES." Refresher lessons are important, however, because as your children grows, the proportions of their bodies change significantly. The purpose of refresher lessons is to allow the child to practice the already learned skills with his or her new body and new set of emotions. This also provides the ISR instructor an opportunity to observe and correct any "bad habits" that may have been learned. Inst: Whitney Moore All lessons are taught one-on-one for up to 10 minutes daily. Each parent selects a 10 minute time slot for their child to attend in the sessions. 4-6 weeks. M-F M-F

Yoga is a great way for kids to increase awareness of themselves, others and the world while having fun! Yoga is a wonderful way for children to stay (or become) confident, strong, balanced and healthy. Each Kids Yoga class is alive with magical journeys where we meet animals, fly an airplane or drive a car, grow into a tree or imitate the ocean waves, all in the form of dynamic yoga poses. We use music and song, lots of silly props, games, stories and relaxation and visualization.

Club Haver at the JCC of Houston offers services and programs for children with special needs who are in grades K-5. We provide monthly social and Jewish learning events while working to mainstream participants into our children’s program with the assistance of trained staff. We provide developmentally appropriate social programs and support to children with disabilities. We focus on the whole child and his or her social, emotional, intellectual and physical development in the context of community, and we believe that parents are our partners. They are included as active members of the program. We are part of the Jewish community and work with the Bureau of Jewish Education, The Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Services for support in the program.
WEDNESDAYS 7:00 - 9:00 PM ADULT The Nite Owls is an amazing group started over twenty years ago as a social group for Jewish teens with special needs. The group stayed together over the years and has grown into a special needs group for all adults in the community. There are currently 30 members, some of whom were part of the original teen group. The Owls participate in many activities throughout the year including arts and crafts, athletics, cooking, yoga, Jewish and secular holiday celebrations and, of course, field trips. Field trips include going to an Astros game, hay rides, mini golf, bowling, IMAX movies and much more. The program also allows for families of the group members to interact with each other and form a support network. Through community involvement, the group hopes to decrease the stigma surrounding people with special needs.
STARS
PRESCHOOL STARS Preschool Intervention Program was designed to enable preschool children between the ages of 2-5 with language, social pragmatic and sensory motor challenges, to attain skills required for transition into traditional school settings. Our program provides multi-disciplinary intervention in a highly structured, language based, creative and nurturing environment within a Jewish setting. Families are collaborative partners in the ongoing observation, treatment and education of our students. Children have the unique opportunity to develop communication, play and social skills with typical peer groups at a traditional preschool campus. We are currently enrolling students and have limited spaces available. If you would like more information or have any question about the STARS Preschool Intervention Program, contact Michelle Friedman at 713.551.7200 or mfriedman@jcchouston.org.
