OPENING NIGHT
Nicky’s Family Directed by Matej Minác Czech Republic/Slovakia | 2011 96 min. | English | Documentary Audience Choice Award, 2012 Houston Jewish Film Festival
Michael Feinstein The Gershwins and Me
This is Slovak filmmaker Matej Miná c’s third film telling of Sir Nicholas Winton’s remarkable efforts to rescue 669 Czech and Slovak children in 1939 from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia. Winton did not speak of his feat until his wife discovered the scrapbook documenting his deeds 50 years later. When Minác learned about Winton, he made it his mission to keep the story alive. This gripping documentary highlights the stories of what happened to the rescued children and the impact Winton’s feat has had in inspiring others who choose to help heal the planet. They are the “final heroes of Winton’s legacy” who at 103, has lived to witness the powerful and poignant impact of his accomplishments.
A Personal history in twelve songs
From the “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” the celebrated entertainer Michael Feinstein introduces his newly published book, The Gershwins and Me. Told through the stories of twelve of the Gershwin’s greatest songs, Feinstein explores the origin and significance of each tune. During his six-year mentorship with Ira Gershwin, Feinstein researched, catalogued and preserved the unpublished sheet music and rare recordings of the Gershwin’s. He skillfully blends the moving narrative of his own life with the Gershwins and his contribution to their enduring legacy as icons of American music. The accompanying CD brims with Feinstein’s soulful recordings. A five-time Grammy nominee, recipient of three honorary doctorate degrees, a host on PBS and NPR, Feinstein is considered the leading expert on classic American popular music. “Frisky affectionate, lushly illustrated, deeply informed and profoundly respectful.” —Kirkus Review

Helen Nash’s New Kosher Cuisine: Healthy, Simple & Stylish Helen Nash’s two previous cookbooks—Kosher Cuisine and Helen Nash’s Kosher Kitchen—are perennial standouts in the field of Jewish cooking, praised by well-known chefs, foodies and food writers, (including the late, great critic Craig Claiborne). Nash, a longtime culinary instructor and lecturer in New York, has a new collection of innovative, exotic kosher recipes. Its subtitle, Healthy, Simple & Stylish says it all: the 200-plus dishes featured all share an elegance of simplicity, using few high-quality ingredients with a minimum of steps. This is a cookbook for “the Google and Twitter crowd.” “…Think artfully tossed salads with classic touches… clever presentations…upscale yet entirely accessible dishes….” —Hadassah Magazine

Crossing the Borders of Time: A True Story of War, Exile and Love Reclaimed Shirley and Bill Morgan Family Holocaust Memorial Program
This is a true story of Leslie Maitland’s mother’s life as a young Jewish woman during WWII and her family’s narrow escape from Hitler’s Europe. Skillfully blending the facts of the time with the personal love story between Maitland’s mother and a young Frenchman, this compelling narrative reads like a work of fiction. Maitland spent a decade researching, traveling to each location, scrutinizing archives, and tracking down those involved in this remarkable history. An award-winning reporter and national correspondent for The New York Times, Maitland specializes in legal affairs and investigative reporting and is a regular guest on NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show.

Simon Sebag Montefiore Jerusalem The Biography
Wendy Mogel
Drawing on new archives, his own family papers, and a lifetime’s study, Simon Sebag Montefiore writes in dazzling narrative of Jerusalem’s many incarnations, bringing every epoch and character blazingly to life. The 2011 winner of the Jewish Book of the Year Award, Jerusalem is told chronologically through 3,000 years of wars, love affairs and revelations of the men and women – kings, empresses, prophets, poets, saints, conquerors and whores – who created, destroyed, chronicled and believed in Jerusalem. Adopting a strikingly apolitical tone, Montefiore steers a clear path through the religious animosities and political intrigues of how Jerusalem became Jerusalem, the only city that exists twice — in heaven and on earth.
The Blessing of a Skinned Knee The Blessings of a B Minus: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Resilient Teenagers Internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist and parenting expert, Dr. Wendy Mogel first appeared at the Jewish Book & Arts Fair in 2001 speaking on her bestselling book, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. Publisher’s Weekly gave it a starred review calling it “impassioned, lyrical and eminently practical.” In her engaging follow-up book, The Blessings of a B Minus: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Resilient Teenagers, Mogel compares the teen years to the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In her long-overdue return to the Fair, Mogel will illustrate the hidden blessings of raising children from the very young through the teen years, showing parents how to navigate the rough waters of parenting, while adding a measure of joy and humor to the voyage.

Deborah Feldman
Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich
Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots
Unbroken Spirit: A Heroic Story of Faith, Courage and Survival
Deborah Feldman’s memoir invites us into the homes and mindsets of the Satmar people, a deeply religious sect of Chasidic Judaism in Brooklyn, N.Y. She provides a window into a world not many of us know about or can fathom. Her story is at once wholesome and warm and arrestingly lonely, shocking and disturbing. Feldman is reflective, engaging us by saying exactly how she feels. In eloquent and stirring prose she tells a tale of repression and self-discovery. Currently, she is working on a follow-up memoir, which finds her embarking on independence as a single woman and mother, finding a new kind of Jewish life for herself and her son.
Born in Riga, Latvia, in 1947, Yosef Mendelevich was a leader of the Russian Jewish revival in the 1960’s. Arrested in 1970 for attempting to hijack a Russian airplane to escape, he served eleven years in the Soviet gulag for his Jewish activism, which continued in prison. Upon his release in 1981, he immigrated to Israel. “Yosef Mendelevich is a true hero of one of the most successful human rights struggles in history: the rescue of Soviet refuseniks…from an antisemitic captivity… This remarkable memoir must be read by all who love freedom and cherish the right to practice their religion.” —Alan Dershowitz

Women From the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us
6:15 PM Francesca Segal
The Innocents Marilyn Hassid Emerging Author
What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations and style tribes? Combing social history, fashion, record, and pop-culture celebration, Bergstein unlaces the history of women’s obsession with shoes. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real life characters from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, Bergstein writes a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern women and the fashion that reflects—and has shaped—their changing lives. An editor and writer, Bergstein left Vassar College with a degree in English Literature, a Phi Beta Kappa key and “a fling who is now her husband.”
Francesca Segal’s refreshing first novel, The Innocents, portrays modern-day Jewish life with both wit and empathy, effortlessly guiding us through a contemporary cultural milieu whose social rules, both spoken and unspoken, are just as claustrophobic as those of 19th-century New York. A reworking of Edith Wharton’s iconic 1920 novel, The Age of Innocence, Segal lifts the story from its original setting and gracefully sets it down in a 21st-century Jewish London suburb. “A moving, funny, richly drawn story of a young man’s attempts to find out who he wants to be when there are so many others who know best. Full of real pleasures and unexpected wisdom, this book sweeps you along.” —Esther Freud, author of Love Falls and Lucky Break

Vagina: A New Biography
Melton Lunch and Learn At Merfish Teen Center • 9000 S. Rice Blvd.
Yehuda Kurtzer, President of The Shalom Hartman Institute of North America and Fellow of the iEngage Project, is an accomplished lecturer and thinker on major challenges facing contemporary Jewish life. He served as the inaugural Chair of Jewish Communal Innovation at Brandeis University and earned his doctorate from Harvard in Jewish Studies. In Shuva, Kurtzer offers a roadmap for revitalizing the connection between the Jewish people and their past emphasizing biblical narrative as the core of being Jewish, regardless of historical accuracy. The book’s subtitle, The Future of the Jewish Past, advances Kurtzer’s premise: to look at the historymemory dynamic as the way toward the Jewish future; Kurtzer’s preference: “investing in the humanity in our stories (memory) which echo in our souls.”
From Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, comes a dramatic new book, a radical reframe of how we think about, talk about and understand the vagina - and consequently, how we understand women. Heralded by Publishers Weekly as one of the best science books of the year, Wolf sheds new light on the intricate connections between a woman’s experience of her vagina and her sense of self. A co-founder of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership and the American Freedom Campaign, Wolf is a writer whose conviction and keen intelligence have propelled her works to the tops of bestseller lists, and firmly into the realms of modern classics. “…Exhilarating and groundbreaking, provocative and engaging, positive and inspiring.”

The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt’s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer
Directed by Karen Goodman and Kirk SimonUSA | 2010 | 40 min. | English/Hebrew | Documentary Academy Award Winner for Short Documentary Subject, 2011 Former Principal Karen Tal in attendance
An exceptional chronicle of a Jewish family’s courageous effort to avenge one of the crimes committed against them. Following the trail of a single painting, Anne-Marie O’Connor details the heirs’ fight to restore their property, bringing to light the shameful story of art confiscated from Jewish collections by the Nazis in Austria and tenaciously held on to by the postwar Austrian state. The fate of this painting, and other pilfered objects of art, raises questions of what future generations will learn about the artists and the original owners of the art works. “… A lusciously detailed story of Klimt’s most famous painting, detailing the relationship between the artist, the subject, their heirs and those who coveted the masterpiece….” — Kirkus Review

A moving account of how compassion, dedication, goodwill and enormous patience can help change the lives of children from utter despair to a world of possibilities. Here, no child is a stranger. On the Crazed Experience of Translating Shakespeare’s Sonnets
Portrait of Wally Directed by Andrew Shea Austria/USA | 2012 | 90 min. | English | Feature Documentary
As one of Israel’s finest writers and columnists, Gail Hareven writes widely on politics and feminist issues for Israeli and English publications, teaches feminist theory, conducts writing workshops and lectures on a variety of socio-cultural topics. She is a prolific author of novels, short stories, nonfiction, children’s books and successfully staged plays. In a collaborative project, Hareven translated Shakespeare’s Sonnets into Modern Hebrew. “…I fell in love with the text in a way that was like being possessed by a dybbuk (demon)…it’s as if an alien force completely takes over your brain,” she says, and suggests Shakespeare and the biblical Song of Songs are the cultural basis upon which humanity learned to love.
In 1997, the discovery of Egon Schiele’s Portrait of Wally, on the walls of the Museum of Modern Art, triggered a historic court case. In 1939, Nazis seized the beloved Shiele painting of Austrian art collector Lea Bondi. This fascinating and intricate story tells about the intolerance, disrespect and lack of cooperation that impounded the Schiele painting until 2010, 71 years after its theft, and brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to search their own collections for suspect objects. The 13-year war over “Wally” was more than a dispute over property stolen from Jews during the Holocaust. It was a battle over history and memory. Justin Halpern is a bestselling author and TV/ writer producer whose first book, Sh*t My Dad Says, a collection of essays about growing up with his unapologetically honest father, became a #1 New York Times bestseller. Soon after Sh*t My Dad Says began to take off, comic writer Halpern decided to propose to his then girlfriend. But before doing so, he asked his dad’s advice, which was very simple (and surprisingly clean): “Just take a day to think about it.” This book is that day. Crossing the warmth of The Wonder Years with the candor and observational humor of David Sedaris, this follow-up to the hottest comedy debut of last year is a hilarious, toe-curling true book about life, and love.

Funny: The Book Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Comedy
Precious Objects: A Story of Diamonds, Family, and a Way of Life At Congregation Beth Yeshurun 4525 Beechnut
David Misch has been writing and producing comedy for more than 35 years. His credits include Mork and Mindy, Police Squad, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Saturday Night Live, and Duckman. He is an author, playwright, songwriter, blogger and recovered stand-up comic. Now, he’s written the definitive book on the art and history of humor. Funny, the Book, is an entertaining look at the art of comedy, from its historical roots to the latest scientific findings, with diversions into the worlds of movies, television, theater, jokes and stand-up comedy including the author’s personal reminiscences.
With dramatic insight, Oltuski tells of her family’s diamond-paved move from Communist Siberia to a Displaced Persons Camp in post World War II Germany, to New York’s diamond district, exploring connections between Jews and the industry, the gem and its lore and the exotic denizens of this secluded world. Entertaining and illuminating, Precious Objects offers an insider’s look at the history, business, and society behind one of the world’s most coveted natural resources; an intriguing backstage pass to an extraordinary and timeless show. Oltuski’s writings can be found in various magazines and on NPR. “Like a diamond’s prism…radiates adventure, mystery, comedy, science, and more…This book on diamonds is a prize.” —The Examiner

The Aleppo Codex: A True Story of Obsession, Faith, and the Pursuit of an Ancient Bible
The Mossad: The Greatest Missions of the Israeli Secret Service Yes, we know it’s election night, but what better way to take a break before the results start rolling in than to join a Houston Jewish Book & Arts Fair favorite, Michael Bar–Zohar, for his fourth Book Fair appearance. Bar–Zohar is a writer, legislator, soldier, academician, globetrotting reporter, one of Israel’s leading experts on espionage, and a charismatic public speaker. In The Mossad, Bar-Zohar with Nissim Mishal, reveals the dangerous missions that have shaped Israel and the world. In riveting detail, the authors focus on the operational details and personalities behind the Mossad’s record of assassination, kidnapping, sabotage, and clandestine surveillance. This gripping, white-knuckle read discloses “…Israel’s hidden force is as formidable as its recognized physical strength.” —Shimon Peres. Author of numerous novels and non-fiction, Bar-Zohar was a Knesset member, the official biographer of David Ben-Gurion and Shimon Peres, friends with Ariel Sharon and Yitzhak Rabin. He fought in four wars, yet remains a determined supporter of peace. Patron Sponsors: Sylvia and Aubrey Farb Theba and Buster Feldman Zahava Haenosh Amira and Alexander Reiter
Expecting to write a heartening story about the rescue of the legendary “Crown of Aleppo,” Matti Friedman instead discovered human drama filled with betrayals, conspiracies and surprise plot twists. An unintentional thriller, this is the story of a book that was once a community’s greatest pride, ruined by the humans entrusted with its care. Friedman is a magnificent and thoughtful storyteller, shifting between time and place with facility, bringing the story of the Codex to life and weaving it skillfully with the present and recent past. Friedman is an international reporter and blogger who currently writes for the Times of Israel. This is his first book. “A superb work of investigative journalism that reads like a detective thriller.” —The Wall Street Journal Underwritten by The Maurice Amado Foundation Patron Sponsors: Kimberly and Adam Siegel Free to Series Pass Holders • $10 ERJCC Member • $15 Public

Rabbi Rami Shapiro At Congregation Or Ami • 3443 Wilcrest Drive
Leonard Mlodinow is a prolific author, scientist, philosopher, professor, screenplay writer, and software developer who has collaborated with luminaries Steven Hawkins and Deepak Chopra, Stephen Spielberg and Robin Williams. In his new book, Subliminal, Mlodinow gives us an “enlightening” — Booklist, startling and eye-opening examination of how the unconscious mind shapes our experience of the world, and how we misperceive our relationships with family, friends, and business associates, misunderstand the reasons for our investment decisions and misremember important events. His trademark wit begins with the book cover. Tilt the book and transparent lettering beckons, “Hey There. Yes: You, Sexy. Buy This Book Now. You Know You Want It.”
Ask almost any Jew whether grace is a central concept in Judaism and chances are, the answer will be no. But accordingly to Rabbi Rami Shapiro, award-winning author, poet, essayist and educator whose liturgical writings are used in prayer services throughout North America, grace—God’s love freely given—IS central to Judaism and living Jewishly. Drawing from ancient and contemporary, traditional and non-traditional Jewish wisdom, Rabbi Shapiro reclaims the idea of grace in Judaism. Ordained at Hebrew Union College– Jewish Institute of Religion and with Ph.D. and D.D. degrees, he is recognized as one of the most creative figures in contemporary American Judaism. Jewish Jocks: An Unorthodox Hall of Fame
Ari Schonbrun
Jewish Jocks covers the most influential Jews in sports – athletes, coaches, broadcasters, team owners, trainers and even statisticians (in the finite universe of Jewish jocks, they count!) A timeless collection of biographical musings, sociological riffs about assimilation, first-person reflections, it is, above all, great writing on some of the most influential and unexpected pioneers in the world of sports by some of today’s most celebrated writers. Franklin Foer is The New Republic’s Editor-at-Large and a Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation. He is the author of How Soccer Explains the World. Marc Tracy is a staff writer at Tablet Magazine, where he edits the daily blog, The Scroll.
Miracles & Fate on 78 Ari Schonbrun can tell you exactly where he was at 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001 when his life changed forever. On that day, his employer, the Cantor Fitzgerald Company, had 663 workers in Tower One. All but five of the employees died; four were injured and one walked out without a scratch — Ari Schonbrun. Ever since, he has been grappling with the events that shook his life, the nation, and the whole world. His memoir, Miracles & Fate on 78, is his testament of dramatic lessons learned as to what truly matters most in life.

Welcome to Kutsher’s: The Last Catskills Resort
Six-Word Memoirs on Jewish Life Over thousands of years, millions of words have been written about the Jewish soul. The most precise distillation of our people’s essence may have finally arrived. Six Word Memoirs on Jewish Life is a collection of 360 nanoessays on “the wild, weird and wonderfully complex world of Judaism today,” states editor Larry Smith, founder of the online SmithMag and SmithTeens, This is the latest in a series of popular six-word-memoir collections on work, love and adolescence; and the first in which Smith tackles the faith of his fathers. His six-word memoir project can be found in classrooms, boardrooms, hospitals, congregations, speed-dating sessions, and at live six-word “slams” across the world. Everyone has a story. What’s yours?
Directed by Caroline Laskow, Ian Rosenberg | USA 2012 | 73 min. | English | Documentary
Kutsher’s Country Club is the last surviving Jewish resort in the Catskills, and in its heyday was one of the legendary “Borscht Belt” hotels. The resorts were a Jewish vacation paradise with a significant influence on entertainment, stand-up comedy and sports. In this enjoyable documentary, watch Wilt Chamberlain playing ball and working as a bellhop at Kutsher’s, laugh with Freddie Roman as his classic routine still brings down the house, see ice skating instructor extraordinaire Celia Duffy hop up on the Zambon, and marvel at the abundance of hearty kosher feasts. “Kutsher’s is inexorably tied to all of American pop culture…which people wouldn’t necessarily think of as Jewish or as rising from the Catskills…This is what we think is so fascinating.” —Ian Rosenberg, co-producer.

Marc Blitzstein: His Life, His Work, His World A composer and lyricist of enormous innovation and influence, Marc Blitzstein remains one of the most versatile and fascinating figures in the history of American music, his creative output running the gamut from film scores and Broadway operas to art songs and chamber pieces. Best known for his “Three Penny Opera” and “Mack the Knife,” Blitzstein constantly pushed the boundaries of convention in both his work and his life. Award-winning music historian and University of Houston Moores Professor of Music, Howard Pollack’s new biography covers Blitzstein’s life from his childhood in Philadelphia to his violent death in Martinique at age 58. Beautifully written, drawing on interviews with friends and family of the composer, and new archival sources, Pollack presents the most complete biography of this quintessentially American artist.

The Long Shadows: The Story of Jake Erlich
Maurice Amado Foundation Music Residency and Concert Presented in cooperation with Miller Outdoor Theatre At Miller Outdoor Theatre • 6000 Hermann Park Drive
Psychologist, author and nationally known speaker, Dr. Andrew Erlich tells the remarkable life of his beloved uncle, Jake Erlich (Jack Earle), one of the world’s tallest men. Encompassing the years 19061940, we travel through the immigrant experience in turn-of-the-century Texas, silent films, circus life, the modern art movement, the Great Depression and the domestic anti-Semitism prior to World War II. As an artist, poet, silent film star, circus performer, and at an astonishing 8 foot 6 inches, Jake’s life depicts the universal story of the challenge to overcome adversity, the power of self-acceptance, the danger of stereotypes and the healing which comes from self-expression through the creative arts. “… a uniquely courageous soul who proved to be a giant in more ways than one.” —Diana Serra Cary, author/film historian, former child star.
One of Israel’s greatest contemporary musicians, superstar David Broza is a dynamic and vibrant performer in the singer/song-write/troubadour tradition. Energetic and charismatic, he blends musical styles from the three countries in which he was raised: Israel, Spain, and England. With his acoustic guitar, he imparts a unique fusion of flamenco-flavored rhythm and percussion, whirlwind finger picking, and signature rock and roll sound. For 20 years, his Sunrise at Masada concerts have been sell-outs and aired on PBS. Broza is dedicated to humanitarian causes and committed to peace. His signature song, “Yihyeh Tov,” has become the anthem of the peace movement. “Broza’s sound and stage presence goes beyond any fashion. To hear Broza’s music is to be moved. To see Broza in concert is to be mesmerized.” — New York Post Underwritten by The Maurice Amado Foundation Patron Sponsors: Elena and Joel Dinkin Patrons of the Arts and Series Pass Holders, call 713-551-7255 for assigned seat tickets under the covered pavilion.

Bar Mitzvah Directed by Henry Lynn USA | 1935 | 75 min. | B&W | Yiddish with English subtitles
Jeffrey Toobin
A fascinating piece of cultural time travel, Bar Mitzvah gives audiences a sense for what an afternoon was like in the great Yiddish theater of yesteryear. The only surviving film of Yiddish theater superstar Boris Thomashefsky, this musical melodrama is a masterwork of shund—popular lowbrow theatrical fare that was the bread and butter of the Yiddish theater. It’s a kitschy romp hinging on the old chestnut about a shipwreck victim returning to find her husband remarried (to a golddigging vamp). The National Center for Jewish Film has recently discovered and restored the film with new subtitles and translations. The Village Voice insists, “If ‘Jewish Film,’ and Jewish culture at large, are about legacy, then this is required viewing, an immersion in the remembrance of the forefathers.”
The Oath: The Obama White House and The Supreme Court In his anticipated new book, The Oath: The Obama White House and The Supreme Court, Jeffrey Toobin asserts, “The battle between a conservative court and a liberal president will be one of the central behind-thescenes dramas of the Obama years.” This is his sequel to the acclaimed The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court. Mr. Toobin is a high-profile senior analyst for CNN and staff writer for The New Yorker, as well as an esteemed expert on politics, media and the law. He is the pioneer of “legal journalism,” fostering understanding of our legal system. With unparalleled journalistic skill, Mr. Toobin has provided analysis on some of the most provocative and important events of our time.

The Future of the Jews: How Global Forces are Impacting the Jewish People, Israel, and its Relationship with the United States
Interviewing Mr. Toobin on stage will be Samuel Norich, Executive Director and Publisher of The Forward and The Forverts since 1997. He is the former Executive Director of YIVO, the Institute for Jewish Research (1980-1992) and the author of What Will Bind Us Now: A Report on the Institutional Ties Between Israel and American Jewry. He appears courtesy of The Forward.
In his new book, The Future of the Jews, Stuart Eizenstat provides a provocative analysis of current global trends in geo-political thinking, technology, and demographics with an eye to how they will affect Israel and Israeli-U.S. relations. The recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees for his long, rich career in public service Ambassador Eizenstat has held key policy making positions in the Carter and Clinton administrations. His achievements are a remarkable reflection of advocacy for human rights and the welfare of Jews. Everyone concerned about the future of Jews and the United States’ role in a world confronting unprecedented simultaneous, cataclysmic changes will find this book a necessary read. “…a brilliant, insightful and illuminating analysis of global trends…a deeply reasoned …work…” —Henry A.
