YOUR COMMUNITY CENTER
For many homebound seniors, a daily hot meal and a friendly face are not commonplace. What most of us take for granted is truly a luxury for many frail elderly. One program in Houston has the capability of providing these two necessities in a senior’s life — the Meals-on-Wheels
The ERJCC is your community center. Membership is open to people of all races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. It is a place where dedicated volunteers and professional staff work together to help shape the foundation and guide the direction for the ERJCC. Get involved! Join us for a class, exercise your mind and body, enjoy a cultural event or holiday program, or become a volunteer. It is all here for you at the ERJCC – the possibilities are endless. The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is a beneficiary of the United Way of Greater Houston and The United Jewish Campaign.
program. Won’t you please get involved?
ERJCC MISSION STATEMENT

The ERJCC is a membership-based organization, and annual membership is required to participate in most ERJCC activities and programs. A variety of membership types are available to suit your needs. ERJCC Fitness Center and Boniuk Tennis Center memberships are also available at the Joe Weingarten Building. Annual dues are payable by check, credit card or monthly through EFT bank draft. A temporary membership card will be issued for two weeks upon joining. New members are asked to return to the Membership Office to take a picture for their permanent photo ID membership card. These cards are required for activity registration and as identification for entrance to the recreational facilities, Fitness Center, Tennis Center, and Aquatics Park. After the first year, membership is automatically renewed each year, for those paying by EFT, unless a written request is received by the Membership Office. Your ERJCC membership card is recognized at the various Houston locations and at many of the 275 Jewish Community Centers in the United States, Israel and Canada.

INFANT PARENT AQUATICS PROGRAM 6–30 MOS This 30-minute class is for children ages 6-30 months and their parents. The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. Students are gently guided through every skill level, learning to master each ISR Self-Rescue technique in swimming attire, and while fully clothed. Lessons are delivered in 10-minute trainings, five days per week, Monday through Friday, for 4–6 weeks. Open to public. M-F

SWIM-FLOAT-SWIM
13 MOS - 4 YRS
Swim-Float-Swim is for babies and children who can walk independently. In this program children learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down, roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, and to roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out or be rescued by an adult. Using instruction techniques based on the behavioral sciences, ISR teaches each child survival swimming skills in conjunction with basic swimming lessons that give them the competence required to safely enjoy the water. Students learn to perform these skills first in a swim diaper/bathing suit and then while fully clothed. Lessons are delivered in 10-minute trainings, five days per week, Monday through Friday, for 4 - 6 weeks. Open to public. M-F

jewish learning EXPLORE JUDAISM ON YOUR OWN TERMS In Pirkei Avot 2:5, Hillel says “Do not say, when I have leisure time I will study, perhaps that time will not come.” At the ERJCC’s Center for Jewish Living and Learning we say “now is the time to start your Jewish journey, on your own terms.” For sixteen years, the Melton program has brought hundreds of adults together to study Jewish practice, ideas, ethics, and history in our Core Curriculum. Upon completing this two-year program, participants received a certificate from Hebrew University and only then were they eligible to take our Scholars Courses on specific topics. Four years ago, the CJLL introduced the Kulanu program, an opportunity to take four to six week mini-courses if the Melton courses, which ran year-long, did not fit your schedule. Beginning this fall, the CJLL’s adult Jewish learning program is getting a face lift. For the first time Melton Scholars Courses will be open to everyone without the pre-requisite of completing the Core Courses. In addition, participants have the opportunity to register for a single Scholars Course. THE MELTON CORE CURRICULUM, which gives you the greatest immersion in Jewish Study will continue to be facilitated by outstanding faculty. In this program, you have the opportunity to explore over 120 topics of Jewish interest including the meaning behind Shabbat observance, the ethical issues surrounding in vitro fertilization, the history of the Zionist Movement and our tradition’s understanding of what it means to be the “Chosen People.” This core curriculum is what has made the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School the largest and most successful adult education program of its kind, with tens of thousands of graduates and schools across North America, South Africa, Australia, and the United Kingdom. THE MELTON SCHOLARS CURRICULUM has shorter courses and focuses on a specific topic. These courses can be taken independently, but also compliment the strong background one receives in the Core Curriculum. Finally, the CJLL’s KULANU MINI-COURSES are an introduction to Jewish learning for the uninitiated. In these courses you can get your feet wet in Jewish study, until you decide which Jewish Journey is right for you. For more information, contact Nomi Barancik at 713.729.3200 ext. 3288 or nbarancik@erjcchouston.org

THE MELTON SCHOLARS CURRICULUM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COURSES: 1000 YEARS OF RABBINIC COMMENTARY ON THE STORY OF JOSEPH ADULT Come study with us the adventures of the famous Joseph. Firstborn to Jacob’s beloved Rachel, but 11th born in the status of 12 sons, he was loved by his father, but hated by his brothers. At the age of seventeen, his teenage years affect everyone in his family. A plan is devised to “get rid” of Joseph. But what really happens to him and who ends up selling him? Numerous commentaries discuss the travails of Joseph who eventually becomes Vizier, 2nd in command to King Pharoah of Egypt.
EXODUS 2: REVELATION AND REVOLUTION ADULT The course follows the development of the emerging Jewish nation from their awe-inspiring encounter at Mount Sinai through the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness. The high points of divine revelation in “Ten Commandments,“ “Encountering God,” and “Face to Face with God” are sharply contrasted with the low points of the “Golden Calf: Revolt or Reversion.” The text addresses some of the specific laws and regulations that were to become part of Jewish living as well as the meaning, purpose and relevance to our lives today. Inclusion: The Halakhic Case for Egalitarianism Monday, December 10 at 7:00 PM—8:30 PM If much of the Jewish past assumed that many supporting roles were delegated to women in order to allow men to be fully present, how can an egalitarian world ensure full presence for some without dividing roles along gender lines alone? Our program provides multi-disciplinary intervention in a highly structured, language based, creative and nurturing environment within a Jewish setting. Families are collaborative partners in the ongoing observation, treatment and education of our students. Children have the unique opportunity to develop communication, play and social skills with typical peer groups at a traditional preschool campus. We are currently enrolling students and have limited spaces available. NITE OWLS ADULT The Nite Owls is an amazing group started over 40 years ago as a social group for Jewish teens with special needs. The group stayed together over the years and has grown into a special needs group for all adults in the community. There are currently 20 members, some of whom were part of the original teen group. The Owls participate in many activities throughout the year including arts and crafts, athletics, cooking, yoga, Jewish and secular holiday celebrations and, of course, field trips. Field trips include going to an Astros game, hay rides, mini golf, bowling, IMAX movies and much more. The program also allows for families of the group members to interact with each other and form a support network. Through community involvement, the group hopes to decrease the stigma surrounding people with special needs. Instructor: Eric Bishop W 7:00 PM—9:00 PM
You do not have to be Jewish to join the group, but you do have to be a member of the ERJCC. Single adult memberships are available as well as scholarships for those who qualify. For more information, contact Eric Bishop at ebishop@erjcchouston.org or 713.729.3200 ext. 3230
