YOUR COMMUNITY CENTER

For many homebound seniors, a daily hot meal and a friendly face are not commonplace. What most of us take for granted is truly a luxury for many frail elderly. One program in Houston has the capability of providing these two necessities in a senior’s life — the Meals-on-Wheels program. Won’t you please get involved?

The ERJCC is your community center. Membership is open to people of all races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. It is a place where dedicated volunteers and professional staff work together to help shape the foundation and guide the direction for the ERJCC. Get involved! Join us for a class, exercise your mind and body, enjoy a cultural event or  holiday program, or become a volunteer. It is all here for you at the ERJCC – the possibilities  are endless.   The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is a beneficiary of the United Way of Greater Houston and The United Jewish Campaign.

ERJCC MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston is to develop and strengthen Jewish identity, foster Jewish values, and enrich the Jewish community and the greater community.

To volunteer, please contact the ERJCC MOW by calling 713.729.3200 ext. 3251 or email

JEWISH HOLIDAY CLOSING

The ERJCC is a membership-based organization, and annual membership is required to participate in most ERJCC activities and programs. A variety of membership types are available to suit your needs. ERJCC Fitness Center and Boniuk Tennis Center memberships are also available at the Joe Weingarten Building. Annual dues are payable by check, credit card or monthly through EFT bank draft. A temporary membership card will be issued for two weeks upon joining. New members are asked to return to the Membership Office to take a picture for their permanent photo ID membership card. These cards are required for activity registration and as identification for entrance to the recreational facilities, Fitness Center, Tennis Center, and Aquatics Park. After the first year, membership is automatically renewed each year, for those paying by EFT, unless a written request is received by the Membership Office.   Your ERJCC membership card is recognized at the various Houston locations and at many of the 275 Jewish Community Centers in the United States, Israel and Canada.

When it comes to health and fitness, it’s important to focus on both. Often times, it isn’t until retirement that we can develop new skills and expand special interests. The ERJCC offers a wide variety of classes to improve strength,  balance, stability stamina, health and resilience. We don’t just target weight loss or muscle building. We have a whole new series of “Active Adult” classes that include working on your memory, blood sugar regulation, reducing anxiety and improving sleep. The National Institute on Aging and The National Institute of Health recommends that adults in the 50+ population get 2.5 hours of moderate intensity endurance exercise each week. To help you achieve this goal, we have designed and developed a wide variety of classes.

INFANT PARENT AQUATICS PROGRAM 6–30 MOS This 30-minute class is for children ages 6-30 months and their parents. The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. INFANT SWIMMING RESOURCE PROGRAM ROLLBACK TO FLOAT

6-12 MOS

Babies 6-12 months old are very active and surprisingly quick! Before your baby can feel confident to safely enjoy the water, he or she must first learn the skills needed for Self-Rescue™. The Rollback-to-Float teaches Infants 6 to 12 months how to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their back and float unassisted to rest and breathe until help arrives. Students are gently guided through every skill level, learning to master each ISR Self-Rescue technique in swimming attire, and while fully clothed. Lessons are delivered in ten-minute trainings, five days per week, Monday through Friday, for four to six weeks. Open to public. Instructor: Whitney Moore M-F

SWIM-FLOAT-SWIM

13 MOS - 4 YRS

Swim-Float-Swim is for babies and children who can walk independently. In this program children learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down, roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, and to roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out or be rescued by an adult. Using instruction techniques based on the behavioral sciences, ISR teaches each child survival swimming skills in conjunction with basic swimming lessons that give them the competence required to safely enjoy the water. Students learn to perform these skills first in a swim diaper/bathing suit and then while fully clothed. Lessons are delivered in ten-minute trainings, five days per week, Monday through Friday, for four to six weeks. Open to public. Instructor: Whitney Moore M-F

TAP III TEEN/ADULT This tap class concentrates on the low to the ground and precise style of tap called “rhythm tap,” largely made infamous through the old masters of tap such as Eddie Brown. Tap dancing is a dance of strong rhythms and relies almost totally on footwork. The feet become musical instruments marking out complex rhythm with the heel and the toe. Placement and advancement of any student is  at the sole discretion of the dance director. Prerequisite 4 years of Tap.

special needs STARS PRESCHOOL STARS Preschool Intervention Program was designed to enable preschool children, with language, social pragmatic and sensory motor challenges, to attain skills required for transition into traditional school settings. Our program provides multi-disciplinary intervention in a highly structured, language based, creative and nurturing environment within a Jewish setting. Families are collaborative partners in the ongoing observation, treatment and education of our students. Children have the unique opportunity to develop communication, play and social skills with typical peer groups at a traditional preschool campus. We are currently enrolling students and have limited spaces available. If you would like more information or have any question about The STARS Preschool Intervention Program, contact Bonnie Kasner at 713.551.7200

NITE OWLS ADULT The Nite Owls is an amazing group started over 40 years ago as a social group for Jewish teens with special needs. The group stayed together over the years and has grown into a special needs group for all adults in the community. There are currently  20 members, some of whom were part of the original teen group. The Owls participate in many activities throughout the year including arts and crafts, athletics, cooking, yoga, Jewish and secular holiday celebrations and, of course, field trips. Field trips include going to an Astros game, hay rides, mini golf, bowling, IMAX movies and much more. The program also allows for  families of the group members to interact with each other and form a support network. Through community involvement, the group hopes to decrease the stigma surrounding people with special needs. Instructor: Eric Bishop W 7 PM—9 PM

You do not have to be Jewish to join the group, but you do have to be a member of the ERJCC. Single adult memberships are available as well as scholarships for those who qualify. For more information, contact Eric Bishop at ebishop@erjcchouston.org or 713.729.3200 ext. 3230

KRAV MAGA ALLIANCE LEVEL 1 ADULT Learn the system preferred by military and law enforcement units around the world! Krav Maga (“contact combat” in Hebrew) is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Krav Maga was specifically designed to be easy to learn and easy to remember under stress. It is instinct-based, so that the techniques follow your natural reactions under stress; realitybased, so that all the techniques are tested under stress to make sure they work on the street; integrated, so that there are fewer techniques that work against more variations in the attack. Come for the safety, and leave fit. Come for the fitness and leave safer! Min 10
