Celebrating 35 Years! Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre January 14 – February 8, 2015
HONORING:
Joan Karff: 25-year Director of Joan Karff’s New Dance Group and now a mentor for “Women on the Way Up” and Shelly Power: Dancer, teacher, choreographer, Houston Ballet Academy Director
For three and a half decades, the J has inspired the community with Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre. Whether you have a little one just starting out in ballet or you’re an adult who likes to move to the Zumba beat, this month long dedication to dance at the J has something for everyone. Tirkedu Houston!, an Israeli folk dance workshop, is a fun-filled weekend of enthusiastic Israeli dancing. This year’s workshop leader, Ohad Atia, is world renowned in the genre of Israeli dance, having taught for many years not only in his native country, but also in Israel and the U.S. To celebrate our 35th year, Four + Four Celebration of Dance Concert features eight dance companies that have performed on the Kaplan Stage in years past and honors two outstanding community leaders in dance, Joan Karff and Shelly Power, for their contribution to Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre in its formative years. Featured companies are NobleMotion, Revolve Dance, Urban Souls, Uptown Dance Company, Chapman Dance, HIStory, Houston Ballet II and METdance. As a pre-show to Four + Four, audience members can experience the visual feast of Motion Captured, Dance on Film, which features site-specific, innovative choreography that combines dance and technology. Tapping Away features recognized hoofers in the world of rhythm in a syncopated journey through jazz and sound. Well-known Austin tapper and co-artistic director of Tapestry Dance Company, Acia Gray and members of Tapestry Dance Company, join local tappers Kirstin Grbic, Jackie Coleman and dancers from HSPVA Concert Dancers, MET too Youth Dance Company, Texas New Tappers, Academy at Theatre Under the Stars and the Pelayo Parlade Jazz Trio. The Los Angeles-based Ate 9 dANCE cOMPANY comes to Houston for the first time with its eight-member company led by founder and artistic director Danielle Agami. Born in Israel, Danielle was a member of the Batsheva Dance Company, served

as the artistic director of Batsheva Dancers Create, and functioned as the company’s rehearsal director. Agami is a renowned Gaga teacher and travels the world as an ambassador of Ohad Naharin, artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company. In addition to presenting performances by renowned companies, Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre, in partnership with Society for the Performing Arts, presents two of the Tudor Family Dance Series dance master classes by Diavolo and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. The J master classes are Tap master classes with Acia Gray and Gaga master class with Danielle Agami. Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre is funded in part by the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center Patrons of the Arts, a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, Houston Endowment, Inc. and RBC Wealth Management. Marriott Houston Westchase is the official hotel for Dance Month. For details and tickets visit erjcchouston.org/dancemonth or call 713.551.7255.

On March 7, 2015, the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC’s 25th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball will honor three individuals for their efforts to improve the quality of life for children and youth in greater Houston. Texas Children’s Hospital President and CEO Mark A. Wallace and community leaders Eve and Bobby Lapin have contributed to Honoree Mark A. Wallace many organizations benefiting children throughout Houston. We are extremely proud to shine a spotlight on the work of these “super” people, whose heroic actions help to create a better world. Our 2015 Honorees embody the true spirit of the award which recognizes individuals for their work with children. Their efforts for both Jewish and secular causes are known throughout the community. They distinguish themselves by going above and beyond, giving both personally and professionally. They are community leaders whose great generosities inspire us all. They are true SUPER heroes! Honorary Chairs Rosalyn and Barry Margolis, Lauren and Jeremy Blachman and Marci Rosenberg & Ben Samuels, will pay tribute to the accomplishments of these deserving Honorees. The super herothemed black tie gala and evening of dinner and dancing will be held at the Westin

Galleria, and will pay tribute to the “super heroes” honored over the past 25 years. As always, a highlight of the evening is the extensive silent auction that annually raises more than $75,000 to help defray the cost of the event. An online auction will kick off in mid-February to generate additional proceeds prior to the event. Since 1990, the Ball has generated approximately $10 million for the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund, so that children from six-week-old infants to teenagers, of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and with different abilities, can participate in early childhood care, educational activities, special needs programs and summer day camp at the J. Each year more than 300 children receive scholarship assistance, children who otherwise may not be able to participate in activities like learning to swim, celebrating a holiday, or making new friends at the J. With your support, children in our community will have the precious opportunity to discover and develop their talents and gifts. Our Honorees have made their commitment to this cause, and we are so grateful. We hope that you will help us reach beyond, so even more children have the opportunity to enjoy these transforming experiences.
Honorees Eve & Bobby Lapin
Tables of ten and individual tickets may be purchased starting at $3,000 and $300, respectively. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For general questions contact Melissa Gordon, Director of Special Events, at 713.729.3200 ext. 3202 or csb@erjcchouston.org. Donations and tributes may be made in honor of these outstanding community leaders at erjcchouston.org/csb.

FITNESS & WELLNESS CENTER EVELYN RUBENSTEIN JCC HOUSTON
A New You: Easier Said Than Done It’s a new year and you have the same resolution to get fit, to get in shape or to get healthy. This will be the year! Or will it? We all have different reasons for wanting to get in shape and just as many reasons why it doesn’t ever work out. You are not alone—it’s hard to get started and even harder to stick with a regular routine of fitness. Learn to position yourself for success. First, disregard the myths about exercise and fitness. Like the one about needing a long, rigorous workout to get any benefit. Even modest exercise, like 30 minutes of low-impact work a day, is good for you. Train your brain to stop saying you are too tired to work out. Exercise doesn’t zap your energy; exercise energizes us physically, mentally and emotionally. Exercise enhances our mood by increasing the release of endorphins, a "feel good" chemical that increases energy levels. Lisa Shapiro, a 41-year old fitness member, was in a dead end workout group but was scared to try something new. She made a commitment to get healthier and started out with a small goal. “I heard about JFIT and decided to try it for 3 months (it's been a year). It was the best decision I made,” said Lisa. “I thought I was strong, but this group showed me strength I didn't know I had. The three trainers pushed me to levels I didn't know possible. JFIT changed the way I eat, the way I work out and the way I look at fitness. Almost 25 pounds and 3 dress sizes down...I have reached my goal physically and mentally."
Monico Evans, Personal Trainer

How Does Halacha (Jewish Law) Work?
Adult
Is halacha a self-contained dynamic, or does it include social, economic and psychological factors? How does someone “decide” the law? What are the mechanisms for change? What is the role of minhag (custom)? How important is precedent? How useful are the codes of Jewish law, such as the Shulchan Arukh? How has mysticism influenced halacha? This course will explore some of these questions while providing a basic framework for understanding Jewish law.
