Inspiring and entertaining, the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Fair annually delivers a variety of opportunities for the community to learn and experience Jewish literary, cultural and performing arts. The Book Fair is one of the largest events of its kind in the U.S., attracting established and emerging writers from around the world, representing a myriad of themes. Not just for book lovers, Book Fair also includes films, theatre, concerts and Oliver Lapin Family Day featuring authors, interactive performances and activities for children ages 2-11.

Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins Written by Steve Garfinkel Adapted from the book by Eric Kimmel

November 6 & December 25–29, 2016 Follow the adventures of legendary Jewish prankster, Hershel of Ostropol, as he outsmarts a host of Hanukkahhating Goblins, saving the holiday, the synagogue and becoming a hero to the town’s inhabitants. Traditional Hanukkah tunes accompany Hershel’s exploits in this new family-friendly play.

Based in New York/ New Jersey, this all-female company brings a particular perspective and interpretation to their works that incorporate various styles of dance and music. In addition to their public performance, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston will present a separate interactive program by ARD for PJ Library children ages 3-5 that explores the Book of Esther.

Along with Tony Merriwether, they come together in And Still You Must Swing, a show that captures the heart and legacy of tap dance and honors the influence of jazz roots on this art form in a rhythmic feast including live music, dynamic choreography and stunning improvisation.

Soul to Soul brings together the African American and the Yiddish American experience in a deeply stirring musical presentation that celebrates a common journey of two cultures. Internationally recognized authority on Yiddish folk and theater music and a leading figure in Soul to Soul the Jewish theatre and concert worlds, Zalman Mlotek performs with African American Broadway veterans, Tony Perry and Elmore James, Magda Fishman and Lisa Fishman along with a wonderful Klezmer ensemble.

Gadi Lehavi Trio Saturday, April 1, 2017 | 8:00 PM Born in 1996, Gadi Lehavi shares his birthday with the great Duke Ellington. Lehavi was drawn to jazz, playing by ear from an early age and experimenting with improvisation. He has already played with many of the greatest musicians of our time, including Eli Degibri, with whom he performed at the J in 2016.

Get Cultured

Get Cultured offers arts, culture and education events and get-togethers exclusively for young adults in their 20s and 30s. The Get Cultured season consists of film screenings, author talks, culinary programs, comedy nights and other events.

Kabbalat Shabbat: The Grand Unification Lekha Dodi by Debra Band

In Birds of Longing, fiber artist Laurie Wohl interweaves Muslim, Jewish and Christian poetry and spiritual texts from the period of the Convivencia in Spain (8th-15th centuries) and from contemporary Middle Eastern poets, particularly Palestinian and Israeli.

Scriptures in Pictures: The D'rash Design Project Revisited by Christina Mattison August 21–October 21, 2016 Opening Reception Sunday, August 21, 2016 | 3:30 PM–4:30 PM "D'rash" in Hebrew means commentary or exposition. In February 2012 Christina Mattison began creating a new piece of art each week inspired by that week's Torah portion, haftarah portion (Prophets) or concurrent Jewish holiday. This exhibit features works not seen in her 2014 exhibition at the J.

Kabbalat Shabbat: The Grand Unification New illuminated paintings by Debra Band October 29–December 30, 2016 Presentation by Debra Band Sunday, October 30, 2016 | 4:00 PM A wholly new and vibrant celebration of the Kabbalat Shabbat traditions, engaging both our modern minds and our eternal spirit with new poetry translations and literary commentaries by Raymond P.
