PRESIDENT'S LETTER
I
love to hear my peers’ stories about their childhood memories at the J. Sometimes, I hear from more senior members of the community about their fond experiences working on one of our premier programs, serving on a committee or on our Board. Of course, I love to watch as my children make their own special memories at the J. As we celebrate 80 years, from generation to generation, so much has changed; but I believe the essence of what we do, while keeping with the times, has stayed constant and continues to touch the lives of our community. Three weeks into my term as President, I was able to see why Community is our middle name. The 2015 Memorial Day Flood, a disaster impacting hundreds of families in Meyerland and the Jewish community, brought devastation and heartbreak to many. It was uplifting to realize we are so fortunate to live in such a caring community. What happened on the steps of our building was remarkable: the J became the central address for relief efforts. Supplies were dropped off and subsequently picked up by those in need while programs featuring information and resources for homeowners took place throughout the summer. Almost a year later, everything is not back to normal, however, there is a renewed sense of pride and excitement about our community and its viability. During the flood, the J sustained water damage at the Weingarten Building to our racquetball courts and preschool gym. In addition, the Merfish Teen Center, newly renovated and set to open the week of the flood, took in a foot of water. By the end of the summer, the damaged areas at the Merfish Teen Center were renovated, allowing us to have a wonderful place for teens and an updated satellite facility. We are continuing to raise funds for the second phase of construction at the Merfish, primarily on upgrades to the outside of the building and enhancing our greenspace. The first year of my term has definitely been focused on our facilities. The Board continues to review a timeline to repair our infrastructure needs and while doing this, we felt it was important to develop a master plan, in order to explore the opportunities available to reinvest in our 50-year old building and vision a Center to meet the needs of current 2
users and those who will use our facility in the future. As we move forward in this process, a visioning group, comprised of a cross section of our community and current users, will build a case that uncovers the most appropriate ways to reinvest into our facilities and ultimately, our programs for the next generation. Outreach is critical to the future of the J. We must be creative and progressive. Remaining a hub—whether virtual or brick and mortar—of Jewish life and service to the greater Houston community. We strive to be aware of the current trends of where young families are settling to provide opportunities for connection. In February, the J had a unique and special opportunity to meet with the Assistant Director of the US Department of Education division of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services Michael Yudin. Our early childhood education program was selected to be a part of his tour due to the excellence of our school, the progressive nature of our Karol Musher STARS Early Intervention program and what has been accomplished with the concept of inclusion. Our partnerships with the Jewish Federation, United Way, Jewish Family Service, congregations, theatres, universities and other city-wide businesses and organizations make the J a pivotal piece of the fabric in our greater Houston community. I am honored to work with such committed and talented members of our Board of Directors and love watching the exciting and innovative programs and ideas created through the efforts of our numerous volunteers serving on standing and special committees. Our esteemed past presidents continue to provide guidance. Of course, we have such dedicated staff members who give above and beyond what is required to provide wonderful service to our community. Joel Dinkin, our Executive Vice President, has been an amazing partner. His leadership and guidance keep us on track and moving forward. I am so appreciative of the hard work and support of everyone, past and present, involved at the J—for their leadership and desire to make the J a dynamic part of our community from generation to generation. Thanks to everyone and here’s to 80 more years.
Debbie Kaplan, President
