Security at the J and Merfish Teen Center The J has closely reviewed our security standards and procedures over the past year. Several security enhancements have taken place since last summer. When you enter the facility this year for summer camp, you’ll be required to show either your valid membership card or J Pass to enter or else be required to sign in as a visitor with a valid government issued ID. We have also transitioned our on-campus security to include Merfish Teen Center with armed law enforcement such as off-duty Houston Police Department or Harris County Constable level professionals.
This is an opportunity for camp parents to meet the Camp Directors, ask questions and understand all aspects of your child’s camp. This orientation is for Camp Bami and Kinder Camp. Look for dates and times from the Camp Directors in the months leading up to camp.

Meet the Counselors | Sunday, June 11
Camp Bami | 9:00 AM Weingarten Building/Bertha Alyce School (BAS) Kinder Camp | 10:00 AM Weingarten Building – Evelyn Rubenstein JCC (3rd floor) Kaleidoscope | 1:00 PM Merfish Teen Center Save the date! Camp Bami, Kinder Camp and Camp Kaleidoscope are hosting a “Meet the Counselor” event prior to camp beginning on June 11. Come see your child’s camp room and meet their counselors. Knowing what to expect when a camper arrives on the first day of camp often makes the difference for a smooth transition.
Every Child is an Artist When J member Robin Irwin registered her daughters, ages 9 and 11, for J Camps Art Camp last summer, she hoped they would get to do more than typical painting and arts and crafts. It turned out to be much more. “It was amazing to hear my girls talking about masks they made for the kings and queens of the Renaissance Period. Not only did they make the masks, but they were able to tell us about the time period. They love art and I felt it was a great learning experience all around,” said Robin. Tobi Arsham has been the Director of J Camps Art Camp since 2008. And it’s not just a summer job. She teaches art at Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School and has long been accused of inspiring and motivating her students.
She builds an environment where children can create and express themselves though the many mediums of art and have fun at the same time. “Art camp is a great way to kick-start your child’s incredible journey of self-expression, no matter what level artist they are currently at,” said Tobi. “I am dedicated to providing a quality art experience to all children who enter my classroom. Like artist Pablo Picasso once said, ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.’ I believe that all campers can learn art and will achieve to their fullest potential while having summer fun at the same time.” It has long been suspected that arts programs make better students. The New York Center for Arts Education lists some of the benefits of art: kids learn to think creatively with an open mind, kids learn to observe and describe, analyze and interpret, kids practice problem-solving skills and criticalthinking skills. So the next time you put that drawing or painting up on the refrigerator…whether it’s artistic or not, just know you’re not only boosting self-esteem but also brain power. Arts camp at the J should be on the top of your list when it comes to thinking about how your kids will spend their long summer days. We aim for small class sizes with skilled and experienced staff. Don’t miss out on getting a spot in Art Camp this summer. Register early. J Camps early registration opens February 5, 2017 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

The continued success of the Rice Baseball Camps may be largely attributed to the staff’s commitment to the individual player. Low camper/coach ratios are maintained, ensuring each camper receives quality instruction to maximize development. The camps are under the direction of Rice Baseball Coach Wayne Graham and the Rice Baseball staff. Instructors may include current and former Owl players and area high school coaches. Campers leave the J at 8:30 AM and will travel to Rice University to take part in the Rice Baseball Camp for the morning. The group will return to the J for lunch and to participate in recreational swim. On Friday of each week, there will be a special sports related field trip (for example, Advantage Sports). Transportation included. Campers need to bring a glove, bat, hat, cleats (or tennis shoes) and helmet.
The Mike Henshaw Soccer Camp coaches will teach techniques in all aspects of soccer, including goaltending. The focus is to teach campers soccer skills with enjoyment as an important part of learning. It is important for this camp to be fun, focus on development and winning, in the proper order, with teamwork and cooperation with teammates as the most important objective. Mike Henshaw has been the Rice Owls Men’s Club Soccer coach since 1981 and has built a successful program that has stressed character as the key to success on and off the field. This camp will take place at the J, and afternoon activities will include recreational swimming.

Kaleidoscope is an environment where campers can express themselves in a traditional day camp setting. Campers will have exclusive use of the newly-renovated Merfish facility that includes two covered sports courts, swimming pool, sports field, tennis courts and air–conditioned camp rooms.
WITS or Writers In The Schools (WITS) is a well–rounded program of reading, dictation, journaling and independent writing that helps young children discover what it means to be a real writer. Drama and art also extend their understanding of the written word. Basic skills (such as letter formation and spelling) are addressed in context. As children explore the role of the author, they create short stories and poems for the class anthology. This specialized camp combines a morning of WITS with an afternoon of camp activities including daily instructional and weekly recreational swim. Max 55

STARS Shining Bright:
Spirit of the J
For For more than 10 years, the J has offered the Karol Musher STARS Early Childhood Intervention program, a therapeutic program for preschoolers with disabilities, at the Bertha Alyce Early Childhood School (BAS). Last year, STARS evolved from a self-contained program into an inclusive program. Now, with support provided by special educators, children with disabilities and developmental delays can learn alongside non-disabled peers in a NAEYC-accredited general education setting. As one of the only inclusive preschools in Houston, the STARS program enables children to receive therapy and special education within the context of a Jewish preschool. STARS transition to inclusion has gained notice from the United States Department of Education. “STARS students benefit from an all-day inclusion program, socializing and learning alongside their peers,” said Pamela Levy Diebner, Speech and Language Pathologist. “Individual Education Plans (IEP) are written for all students which include pre-academic, social, feeding, speech and fine motor goals, just to name a few. The kids are given the support they need from the STARS teachers and therapists to be successful in the mainstream classroom.” STARS students receive therapy in pull-out or push-in sessions. In essence, they get the best of both worlds by working on their goals in small groups, classroom settings, or private therapy sessions. “Our students receive both their education and therapy in a collaborative and supportive environment,” said Monique Manning, Occupational Therapist. “We can focus on goals to close developmental gaps while children are young. Focusing on this early intervention 20
will help develop a strong foundation for our students’ future educational success.” Parents at the school said that they’ve seen the benefits first-hand. “He came in with no words, really, and now he’s speaking and talking,” said Heather Massoud about her 5-year-old son, Alessio. “He won’t be quiet now, thank goodness. He’s learning from his classmates.” “When Liam was placed in an inclusion classroom, it was life changing and it made transition into Kindergarten easier,” said BAS parent, Trisha Kennedy. “Inclusion provided a safe space where he got to work out how to be around his peers and get feedback in a nonthreatening way. The STARS program changed the trajectory of our child’s life and we are forever grateful.” Giving a child with a disability the intervention they need can be costly and why the Soph and Al Natkin Stars Fund providing scholarship assistance for the Stars program is critical. In addition to the Stars program, each year 300 children at the J receive scholarship assistance. The need for financial assistance is ever increasing and we hope to always be able to support families who are not able to pay. This is one of the many reasons why the Children’s Scholarship Ball benefitting the Irvin Kaplan Scholarship Fund was created. The J will host the 27th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball on March 4, 2017 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Lauren and Jeremy Blachman and H-E-B and Scott McClelland, were selected as Ball Honorees for their success in improving the quality of life for children. For more information, contact Michelle Frankfort at 713.551.7230 or csb@erjcchouston.org
INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM The J is committed to providing all campers from age 3 all the way up to 2nd grade with an exceptional instructional swim experience. Our aquatics program is based on the principles and methods established by the American Red Cross. Swimmers are grouped by age and ability and learn in an age–appropriate environment.
RED CROSS COURSE INFORMATION
The American Red Cross Program is progressive; each skill builds on the skills mastered in the previous levels. To ensure quality programming, it is necessary to successfully complete each level in the progression. Essential swim and safety skills are taught at each level. Skipping or omitting levels may result in your child missing vital skills. The following is a description of each level in the progression.
PRESCHOOL AND KINDER CAMP
Bami and Kinder Camp go through the American Red Cross program to instill water safety, first and foremost.
LEVEL 1: WATER EXPLORATION
The objective of this level is to help students feel comfortable in the water. Elementary skills are taught and students will build skills as they progress.
LEVEL 2: FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS
The objective of this level is to give students success with fundamental skills. This level marks the beginning of true locomotive skills.
LEVEL 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
This level builds on the primary skills learned in level 2 and teaches coordination of the front and back crawl.
LEVEL 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT
This level is focused on developing confidence in the strokes learned thus far. Breaststroke is introduced and endurance is increased.
LEVEL 5: STROKE REFINEMENT
This level focuses on coordination and refinement of key strokes. Endurance is also increased.
LEVEL 6: SKILL PROFICIENCY
The objective of this level is to polish strokes, allowing students to swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness.
FIRST AND SECOND GRADERS
Camp Kaleidoscope and Junior Camps
While the first and second grade programs are based on American Red Cross courses, we feel that most children this age have a base knowledge of water safety and some experience in the water. The program and curriculum designed by the J for this age group utilizes skills taught by the American Red Cross with integrated stroke development. As children progress through the different skill levels (Angelfish, Bluefish, Clownfish, and Dartfish), they will begin to learn strokes and develop endurance and confidence. Children are placed based on their incoming skills and have the ability to move up through the summer. For more information regarding instructional swim during camp or any of our year–round swim classes, swim team or adult swim exercise program, please contact Aquatics Director Lee Hutchens at lhutchens@erjcchouston.org or 713.551.7228.
