Evelyn Rubenstein JCC along with Theater LaB Houston is proud to present the stage adaptation of The Chosen. It’s the 50th anniversary of Chaim Potok’s blockbuster novel, but many of the difficult times in the book reflect issues still alive today.

Coming in May

The Chosen is about a complicated friendship between two Jewish boys who meet in 1940s Brooklyn. The four characters in the play are first and second-generation Jewish immigrants living in New York at the end of World War II. To varying degrees, they all view America as a land of hope, where they can enjoy religious, economic and educational freedom. But danger and conflict lurk when their individuality and traditions are lost in the vastness of American life. The boys and their fathers learn important lessons about themselves on the path to understanding and reconciliation. Linda Phenix, a resident director at Theater LaB Houston, directs the play. “I am thrilled that The Chosen will be presented at the J. It is an honor to be a part of this amazing project,” said Linda. “Jerry LaBita, Theater LaB Houston’s Producing Director, has been working for many months on the production as have Marilyn Hassid, Assistant Executive Director at the J along with Steve Garfinkel, coordinator of the J’s Theater Program. Marilyn is the dramaturge for this project, helping with research about the play. Marc Gessner is the lighting designer and Theater LaB Houston’s Scott Lupton is both assistant director and sound designer.” Steve Garfinkel will also be flexing his acting chops in the role of Reb Saunders. Along with Steve, the cast includes Brad Goertz, Trevor B. Cone, Brian Chambers and John Forgy. “I had the opportunity to sit through the first rehearsal and was amazed at what a perfect fit each of these actors – all among Houston’s finest–is for his role, “ said Marilyn Hassid. Mark your calendars for The Chosen being presented at the Kaplan Theater on May 11, 13, 14, 18, 20, and 21. For ticket information, visit erjcchouston.org/theatre or call the Kaplan Theatre Box office at 713.551.7255.

Marni Axelrad’s kids can’t wait to return to J Camps. Pictured are 3-year-old Holden Schwartz, 8-year-old Rachel Schwartz and 10-year-old Dylan Schwartz.

Have It All This Summer at the J Parents want to give their children the ultimate summer experience. Finding a place that fits every child is hard unless you’re willing to drive all over town. The secret is out – it’s all at the J. Marni Axelrad has three children: different ages, different interests and different stages of development. The J offers the perfect solution for Marni, and all their needs are met in one place. “I love J Camps because of the opportunity for my children to try new things,” said Marni Axelrad. “They love that they can participate in a sport one week, and try STEM, photography, or art another week. My kids love J Camps because they have so much fun there and it feels like home.” Every camp offers instructional and recreational swim, which is one of the most important skills your child can learn this summer. At J Camps, swimming is not only a daily, recreational activity in all camps, but campers between the

camps

ages of 3-7 also receive a daily instructional lesson instructed by certified lifeguards and swim instructors. J Camps swim instructors are certified in safety and quality by the American Red Cross and maintain a very low instructor/ child ratio. The J Camp’s swim program is based on skill levels; each skill builds on the skills mastered in the previous levels. “Teaching campers to be safe in and around the water is our number one priority,” said Theo Lee, the J’s Learn to Swim coordinator. “The Learn to Swim program is designed to help children learn skills from blowing bubbles to developing stroke techniques to learning lifelong swim skills. Each class is filled with fun, engaging and challenging activities that motivate children to want to perform and learn to swim.” For questions or to register for J Camps, please visit erjcchouston.org/camps or contact the J Camps Director, Randy Comensky at 713.595.8166 or rcomensky@erjcchouston.org.

P owered by Your Generosity –

An Interview with the Massett Family Dana and Mark Massett and their children, 15 year old Rachel in the 9th grade at the Emery/Weiner School and 12 year old Jake in the 6th grade also at Emery, live in Meyerland. Moving here from New Orleans in 2000 for their jobs in the oil and gas industry, they fell in love with this community and have been calling the J home since 2006. What is your J story? Neither my husband nor I are from Houston, so our relationship with the J began once we had children. It all started with Kinder Camp and only grew from there. Our daughter, Rachel, has been actively involved in both the dance and theater programs. She started ballet and jazz in kindergarten and is now on pointe and will be performing in the dance recital in june. Our son, Jake, was active in the tennis program for several years and attended summer sports camps and they both have enjoyed the social programs. Do you have a special J memory? Our earliest memories are spending Sunday mornings by the pool. When the kids were young and there wasn’t much else to do on a hot summer day, we knew we could count on the J. Without a doubt, each kiddo would be able to find a friend to hang out with while we were able to talk to our adult friends. It was pretty fantastic! What does a day at the J mean to you? It means community. Someone in our family is at the J at least once a day either to exercise, attend dance class, meet up with friends to shoot hoops or attend a community event – theatre, Book Fair, Dance Month, etc. The reason for our visit may vary, but one thing remains the same - the J is our meeting place to connect with our friends within the community.

L to R: Rachel, Mark, Jake and Dana

What has been the most meaningful part of your involvement at the J? Hands down, the most meaningful part of our involvement has been the deep friendships that we have developed individually and as a family. Why do you believe the J is an important place to support? Supporting the J is an investment in our Jewish community. The J offers a diverse range of events, classes and programs that appeal to all ages. It is a place to connect, a place to build lasting friendships, a place to explore your Jewish identity and a place to learn and grow in a warm, inclusive environment. The J enhances our lives and the lives of those around us – building a strong community that is there for one another in times of celebration and in times of need. Giving to the J allows our family to have a direct and positive impact on our community.
