EVELYN RUBENSTEIN JCC HOUSTON
Annual Fund
This is Payton's Story Tell us your J story at erjcchouston.org/MyJStory
18
We were drawn to the J after Alton retired and have been coming to the J consistently for almost 5 years. The staff and the atmosphere are welcoming and it's nice to interact with a range of age groups from children to senior adults. We have met so many wonderful people at the J from so many places and they all have interesting life stories. In addition to Stay Young through Fitness exercise class and hot lunch, we enjoy the dance and film programs. Even now that we are no longer in the neighborhood, we drive 25 minutes to come to the J to participate in the activities. What is so important to us is that we can do things together and that in varying life stages the J continues to fit our needs.
Our first experience at the J was 5 1/2 years ago when we moved to Houston from Phoenix. We went on a retreat with the Mishpacha and Me program in Lake Conroe and connected with families that had children that same age as ours. Since then, we have attended countless Mishpacha and Me programs at the Children’s Museum, Natural Science Museum, open gym and our personal favorite, Friday Tot Shabbat. Brad and I are regulars at the fitness center, and during the summer, when our children are not at camp, you can most often find us at the pool. We love the community at the J, it has always been a place for us to meet new families and friends and a place where we feel welcome.
The J Annual Fund is the fundraising effort that supports every member of our community. Your membership dues and program fees do not cover the full cost to support the growth of our innovative programs and services. When you give to the annual fund, you are helping to make stories like these happen.

Resilience: In Search of an Ancient Virtue
Tremendous Talmudic Texts
The Seder Revealed: Why Is This Night Different?
MELTON! We Are What We Remember: The Ever-Evolving Transmission of Jewish History
What does it take to find a new normal after a trying time? We all carry stories of tragedy and rebuilding, from personal hardships to communal suffering. In the books of Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Job, we find many diverse and authentically human responses to suffering. What can these ancient writings teach us about surviving struggle and loss — and even finding joy?
What are we really supposed to be doing at the Passover Seder? The Passover Seder does have an order to it as its name Seder implies. This class will look at how the Seder developed from the Torah text to the Mishnah and the Talmud and beyond. But this is not just an academic exercise. The conclusions we will reach will hopefully free you to have a more lively and engaging Passover Seder.
Talmud can be a deep and broad sea. Wade in and discover Talmudic stories and discussions that will surprise, challenge and inspire you. No previous Talmud study experience necessary as we bring these texts into our own lives. Rabbi Fixler will teach in memory of one of his favorite courses at the Hebrew Union College, taught by Dr. Aaron Panken, z”l.
What do we as Jews remember and why? How are national memories formed and preserved? This course opens with the Torah’s directive to remember Israel’s arch-enemy, Amalek. The next three lessons explore significant historical periods and the memories formed around them—the Spanish expulsion, Poland and the Holocaust, and the founding of Israel.
Sister-Wives: The Last Two Matriarchs
This course will explore the lives of Rachel and Leah and how they built their family with Jacob as patriarch despite sibling rivalry. How did they handle the trickery of one marriage, the long wait for another, and how did the outcome of twelve sons and a daughter shape their legacy to the Jewish people?

Gone with the Wind
It’s 1939 and hilarity abounds. From the memoirs of legendary screenwriter Ben Hecht comes this true story, now adapted for the stage. Movie mogul David Selznick has stopped production on Gone with the Wind. The screenplay is a disaster! Locked in his office with Hecht—one of the best script doctors in the biz— and director Victor Fleming, yanked from the set of The Wizard of Oz, the three have just five days to re-write the flop into one of the great films of all time – all while eating only bananas and peanuts! 29
