PARENT INFO NIGHT
This is an opportunity for traditional day camp (BAMI, Kinder, and Kaleidoscope) parents to meet Camp Directors, learn about a typical day in the life of a J Camper, and ask any questions that they might have. The evening will begin with a general overview of J Camps and then parents will divide into their specific camps to learn more. Additional communication about the evening will be sent in April.
SECURITY
Camper and staff safety is our highest priority. J membership cards or J Passes are required for all adults entering the Weingarten Building, Bertha Alyce School, and the Merfish Teen Center. Parents/Guardians can help us by always bringing their badge to drop off and pick up. If you forget your badge, a driver's license will be required. Each campus will have an armed law enforcement professional during camp hours.
INCLUSION
J Camps strives to provide an opportunity for children with special needs to participate in our camp programs. Campers in the Inclusion Program may receive assistance from a shadow, or they may require certain accommodations during their camp day. Shadows are limited and are only available on a firstcome, first-served basis. An intake process must be completed for campers in order to help ensure that their camp experience is a successful one. To discuss the needs of your camper with special needs prior to registration, please contact Anna Shabtay at ashabtay@erjcchouston.org or 713.551.7208.
INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM
The J provides all campers from age 3 years old to 2nd grade with a quality instructional swim experience. The foundation of our program is based on the principles and methods that promote water safety and teach our campers how to swim. Our program is level based where each camper must complete each skill in their current level before moving on to the next one. NEW THIS YEAR: Digital swim reports will be emailed on a regular basis during camp to update you on the progress of your child in the water. For our more advanced swimmers in our traditional day camps, instructional swim is designed to prepare campers to pass the required swim test to use the slide, diving board and rock wall. For more information regarding instructional swim during camp or any of our year–round swim classes, swim team or adult swim exercise program; please contact Aquatics Director Lee Hutchens at lhutchens@erjcchouston.org or 713.595.8193.

There’s a Reason It’s Been Around for Generations We know choosing the right summer camp for your kids is a big decision and we know you have a lot of options, but there’s something about the J that keeps our kids coming back for more. J Camps is a place where kids can grow, make new friends and explore in areas that interest them whether it’s sports, science, technology, arts or cooking. J Camps gives parents all of that in one great place. Becky Blumberg remembers her own camp days at the J when she was a child and now as a mom she brings her own children, six-year-old Owen and four-year-old Shayna.
J Camps offers traditional camp and more than 40-themed specialty camp options in one week increments with pre-camp sessions beginning June 4. J Camps offer flexible program options from 1–12 weeks, making J Camps a popular and affordable choice for parents. J Camps early registration opens February 4, 2018 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
“We’ve never done camp anywhere else but the J,” said Becky. “It was my daughter’s first year to do Camp Bami and she loved it. The counselors were incredible. And my son had the best time at Camp Kaleidoscope. He got out of his comfort zone and tried new things. It really opened up this whole other world for him. My kids are so happy here and that makes me happy.” Becky is a freelance graphic designer who doesn’t always have the flexibility in her work schedule to shuttle kids all over town to do different camps. “The summer is a time to be a little more relaxed. So I love that my kids can do everything they want all in one place,” said Becky. “It’s especially important to me that camp includes both instructional and recreational swimming lessons everyday. My son learned to swim at camp and gained such confidence. The J keeps it simple for me, that’s a big part of it.”

O ur journey’s end is to make a lasting impact on the lives of
children in our community. A big part of that is made possible with Early Childhood programs and J Camps. This past summer our buildings were filled with hundreds of day campers, some of whose experiences were only made possible by the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund. One child’s scholarship often touches the lives of the whole family. As one family from the Bertha Alyce Early Childhood School shared, choosing to remain anonyms. “Our 7-year-old granddaughter is the child of a young, single bipolar mother. Without the assistance of the Children’s Scholarship Fund, our granddaughter would not have the enriching, supportive and safe program she did at BAS and J Camps. While their life situation is not easy, the staff at the J never gave up on them. Each year, the money for camp and preschool helped keep our granddaughter on the right path. Today she is in the first grade and in the gifted program, but mostly she is a very happy little girl and we owe it all to the scholarship assistance fund, without whose support this progress would not have been possible.”

way we could have afforded the program without it. In STARS, our son gets to be in a Jewish preschool classroom with children his own age, and he has many of his necessary therapies built into his school day. We have seen so many improvements in his development already and now can better balance the needs of all three of our children. Thank you so much for helping our son and by extension our entire family.” These are just a couple of the real stories that exemplify what the Children’s Scholarship Ball is all about. The fund was created for all children from six-weeks-old to teenagers, of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and with different abilities, to participate in early childhood care, educational activities, special needs programs and J Camps. Each year, more than 300 children receive scholarship assistance. We want the J to be a destination for all children and not have to turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. Help us celebrate the 28th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball on February 24, 2018 when we honor Wendy Bernstein and Bob Harvey for their efforts to improve the quality of life for children and youth.
Beyond J Camps and our traditional PreK programs, the Karol Musher STARS Early Childhood Intervention Program at Bertha Alyce is extraordinary for kids who need a little extra therapeutic intervention, however, at four times the cost of traditional programs the financial burden can become great. “We are so very grateful for the scholarship we received from the J, helping make it possible for our youngest son to be in the STARS program,” Talya Emery Silva, a BAS parent. “There is no
