JCC Special Needs Programs
he JCC has built a caring, passionate and skilled team of experts and coaches to help members with special needs get involved with groups that enhance self-esteem, improve social skills and develop meaningful relationships. Adapted Aquatic classes at the JCC provide one-on-one lessons tailored to each child's emotional and developmental abilities. "The most important thing to remember when working with children with special needs is that no two children are alike,” said Janet Strimmel, a certified American Red Cross Swim Instructor who has incorporated body awareness, sensory integration, mobility and fun into aquatic lessons. In partnership with Jewish Family Service’s vocational and social skills
program, the Celebration Company, the JCC Fitness Center offers a special needs exercise class, helping adults stay fit while building confidence through total body movement. Club Haver provides monthly Jewish social and learning events for kids in K-5th grades. “Club Haver allows kids like mine to experience the Jewish holidays and activities with other kids. I love the variety of activities from arts and crafts to Judaic programs,” said Judy Blake, mom to 15-year-old Ryan. Other special needs programs include Gymnastics Super Stars. Parents are encouraged to attend with the child to explore physical play promoting coordination, balance and strength. Nite Owls is a special needs social group for adults. The Owls meet on Wednesday nights to do arts and crafts, athletics, cooking, yoga, Jewish and secular holiday celebrations and field trips.
The program also provides a support network for family members. STARS is a Preschool Intervention Program designed to enable children on the autism spectrum the skills needed for traditional school settings. Families are collaborative partners in the ongoing observation, treatment and education of our students. TOPSoccer brings the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 4-19 with a developmental or physical disability. Participation helps develop motor skills, social and cognitive skills in a fun and relaxed environment. For more information about the JCC’s special needs programs, visit jcchouston.org or call 713.729.3200.

Education is Top Priority JCC’s Early Childhood Centers Launch Two New Initiatives
T
“There is nothing more important to us than our kids and their education”
his fall the JCC’s Bertha Alyce Center (BAC) and Ellen Boniuk Center will introduce two new initiatives: a curriculum entitled, Fingerprints: Discovering Jewish Life and The Giving Tree Annual Fund. In the JCC’s preschool programs, fingerprints are not just for cleaning up. They show us where our children have been, what they have done and what is of interest to their ever curious and developing minds. These reminders of their interests and activities are an integral part of the curriculum. Hence, the JCC’s preschools will unveil a new curriculum this year called Fingerprints: Discovering Jewish Life. This new adventure will facilitate optimal learning for children ages

"There is nothing more important to us than our kids and their education," said Rebecca Block, BAC Annual Fund Co-Chair and mother to Joshua, age 3, and Naomi, age 1. "We created this inaugural Annual Fund for BAC to help raise funds to raise the bar of excellence at this already wonderful school. We are thrilled with the progress of the campaign so far. We are confident that other parents, grandparents and alumni families of BAC will feel similarly about their kids and this school and join us to support and enrich this wonderful program." The Annual Fund campaign cochairs are: Rebecca and Kevin Block, Donna and Brandon Mark, and Jessica and Joshua Leif. The program will leave its own fingerprints not only on the children, but also on teachers and families. This fall BAC embarks on another new initiative with the establishment of The Giving Tree Annual Fund. The Fund enables BAC to bridge the gap between tuition and what it actually costs to educate children. BAC is fortunate to have so many families who embrace the values of tzedakah: generosity and kindness. A fundraising goal of $36,000 will enable the school to purchase classroom computers, Smartboards and Judaic components for every classroom.

Florence Melton Adult Mini-School Encourages Spiritual Dialogue
A
re you aware that the Jewish Community Center runs one of the largest adult Jewish education programs in Houston? The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, with a curriculum developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has been offered by the JCC for over 15 years. The program consists of both a core curriculum that includes four courses on Jewish thought, practice, ethics and history as well as over 25 courses taught by a diverse faculty of educators and Rabbis from across the community. New courses for this year include a course on the Arab/Israeli Conflict, the history of American Judaism, the philosophy of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Jewish Sixties. Currently, the program has more than 150 participants and grad-
uated over 30 learners last year from the initial two-year curriculum. The program is designed to offer adult learners a sophisticated and pluralistic curriculum that encourages spirited dialogue and an appreciation for Judaism – past, present and future. “The Melton Mini-School offers a learning opportunity that is comprehensive in its scope and enriching to any adult learner who wishes to explore Judaism for the first time or with a fresh set of eyes,” said Rabbi Michele Faudem. “I encourage adult learners at any stage in their Jewish exploration to consider this program. There are no tests, homework or grades. You come to class to enjoy the discussion and explore your Jewish life.” Classes are two-hours, once a week on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays, during the day or in the evening. In addition to the JCC
and Merfish Teen Center, classes are offered at Congregation Emanu El and at the Emery/Weiner School. For a taste of the Melton experience, join us on either Tuesday, August 17 from 7:00 – 8:00 PM or Thursday, August 26 from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. To learn more about the program or to sign-up to participate in the “Taste of Melton” classes, call Rabbi Michele Faudem at 713.729.3200 ext. 3322.

Top-Notch Pros Lead JCC Tennis Program
T
he Boniuk Family Indoor Tennis Center and the Weingarten Outdoor Tennis Complex at the JCC are home to some of the top tennis professionals in the Houston area. Linda Thomas, Tennis Director, is a former tour professional with a career high ranking of 76 in the 1978 Women's World computerized rankings. Her vast experience and knowledge has played a vital role in developing an impressive Junior Tennis Academy ( JTA) at the JCC, a program which is producing some great young tennis players. The JCC is a certified USTA QuickStart tennis facility, with players from 3 18 years participating in the JTA. Jack Brasington joined the Tennis Center in 2009 and has had great
success developing the Junior Excellence Program for young tournament level players at the JCC’s Weingarten Outdoor Tennis Complex. Brasington has played professionally around the world and is one of only three players ever to qualify for all four majors (U.S. Open, Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon) in a row. He also earned a singles world ranking of 125. He has competed against Roddick, Federer and Sampras, to name a few. “The Excellence Training Program is a fantastic experience for competitive junior players,” said Brasington. “It is a completely balanced training schedule that focuses on movement, ground strokes, strategy, mental toughness, nutrition and fitness. Our players continue to improve while having fun at the same time.” In addition to top-notch junior programs, the JCC has a vibrant adult tennis community led by Head
Tennis Pro Michael Reily. Reily’s 25 years of coaching experience around the world, including in France, New York City, Virginia and Texas, allows him to inject a healthy dose of world-class enthusiasm into the JCC’s Adult Tennis programs. The USA series of classes, designed for those adults new to tennis or returning to the game after many years, offers professional instruction to develop technique and skill at any age. With in-house leagues for singles and doubles, travel teams,
private and group lessons, drills and cardio classes, adult tennis players experience a natural progression as they continue to grow and develop their games. Have fun, get fit, make friends and learn the sport of a lifetime at the JCC Boniuk Family Tennis Center. Visit jcchouston.org to learn more and register today!
