Karol Musher has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the prestigious David H. White M e m o r i a l Aw a r d , announced Leonard Goldstein, Chair of the Selection Committee. The criteria for the coveted award include: commitment to the ideals of Jewish life, service reflecting the highest integrity, love of humanity, dedication to the task and active involvement in Jewish and general community life. The late David H. White, for whom the award is named, was editor-publisher of the Jewish Herald Voice. He served as the President of the Jewish Federation. He is remembered for championing humanitarian causes and concerns of the Jewish community.

“These standards are truly appropriate to the life and deeds of our recipient. Karol has served the Houston community with enduring commitment,” said Jerry Wische, JCC Executive Vice President. She has been active within the Jewish and Houston community for many years, especially with The Emery Weiner School, Kipp Academy, Hillel, BJE, Beth Yeshurun and the Jewish Community Center, where she served as President. The award will be presented at the JCC’s 73rd Annual Meeting, Tuesday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. The community is invited to be present for the special evening including the election of officers, presentation of awards, as well as programs highlighting the Center’s community building initiatives. For reservations contact Janey Finger at ext. 3214.

Jewish Federation Grants JCC $42,231 for Hurricane Ike Assistance With the Jewish community still reeling from September’s Hurricane Ike, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston recently allocated $420,958 to synagogues and Jewish organizations in the greater Houston area to help in the recovery efforts. Of that money, $42,231 was allocated to the Jewish Community Center for building repairs and assistance with lost income due to business interruption. “We really set three criteria for determining who should get the grant funds,” said Chair of the Federation’s Disaster Relief Committee Bobby Lapin. “First, we wanted to reimburse direct humanitarian aid the agencies or institutions had already spent. Second, we wanted to assist with needs that the agencies or synagogues had that they would be unlikely to recoup from other sources such as insurance. And third, when we saw things like restoration of cemeteries and buildings, if the organizations could not get insurance to cover it, we wanted to be there as a provider of last resort.” After collecting a list of unfunded needs from the various Jewish organizations in Houston and Galveston, which totaled

$800,812, the Federation chose to fund nearly 100 percent of direct aid to storm victims and divide up the remaining dollars equally among the other organizations and needs. “Because the available sources of funding were outpaced by need, we essentially granted the remainder of the funds on a pro rata basis — we did not favor any organization over the other or any synagogue over the other,” Lapin said. The money came from four sources: local Federation fundraising, a United Jewish Communities general fund allocation and another allocation from the UJC Emergency Committee and the Texas Governor’s Fund. “We funded about half the need that was out there and we were grateful we were able to cover that much,” Lapin said. Other agencies and organizations that received funds included: Camp Young Judaea, Chabad Coastal Jewish Community Assistance, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, Seven Acres, BBYO, Beren Academy, Congregation Emanu El, Hillel, Seven Acres, B'nai Israel Cemetery, Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation continued on next page

Hurricane Ike Assistance continued Day of Art Beth Jacob, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Congregation Emanu El, The Emery/Weiner School and Houston Hillel. “We have made clear to each of the synagogues and organizations our funds really are funds of last resort and if they are able to obtain insurance funds, the money should come back to us and we will redistribute it for other needs,” Lapin said. Lapin said he was glad the Federation was able to be there to support the community in its time of need. “We serve our community and overseas needs on a regular basis, but when there’s an acute need, it’s a privilege to be able to allocate funds,” Lapin said.

Congratulations Rachel Wallach - May Staff Star For many years, Rachel Wallach has made the West Houston JCC a fun and exciting place for children and teens. In September Rachel moved to the Joe Weingarten Building, and it is clear why her programs are a success. From Winter Camp to a Middle School Dance, her experience and leadership offer something new to the Children’s Department. Rachel’s colleagues recognized her as a staff star because of her personality and creativity. She is involved in almost every program the JCC offers, whether supervising or lending a hand as a volunteer. It is not uncommon to see Rachel helping a program to succeed. “Rachel is a diamond in the rough. When it comes to creating and implementing programs, she adds that extra WOW factor that children and parents are looking for,” said Randy Comensky, Director of Children and Camping Services. “The great thing about Rachel is her bubbly personality and her ability to connect with every child.” It takes a very special person to be able to work with preschoolers and teenagers day in and day out. The JCC is very lucky to have Rachel on its team.

Center for Jewish Living & Learning

Listening to Words of Hillel the Elder By Jonathan Fass, Director, Department of Jewish Living & Learning

This summer, I will be traveling to Jerusalem for a three-week professional development program where I will be studying the “art” of being a Jewish professional through the lens of classic Jewish text study including Bible, Talmud and Jewish Law. I feel privileged to have been accepted to this program, which also includes a scholarship to allow for my travel and stay in Israel. I am grateful to the Jewish Community Center for giving me the time to study and recharge my professional batteries. Many of you are probably not aware that our Jewish Community Center requires all full-time, non-administrative professionals, regardless of their background, to participate in 30 weeks of Jewish education a year. Several members of the JCC staff participate in additional Jewish learning by taking courses in our Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. As the JCC’s Director of Jewish Living and Learning, I am responsible for coordinating and often providing these classes to the staff. This requirement is based on the belief that in order to be an effective professional in a Jewish agency, we must be knowledgeable about the community in which we serve. I think that this requirement has had a significant impact on the way that our staffs think about the agency and the job that

C J L L

they do at the JCC. In Pirkei Avot 2:3 (Ethics of the Sages) Hillel teaches us about the centrality of study in Jewish life and cautions to find the time for study, lest we let the less important things in life fill up our day with his famous statement: “Say Not: When I have leisure I will study, perhaps you will not have leisure.” The Jewish Community Center, by obligating its staff to Jewish education, recognizes that Hillel’s message can also make sense in the workplace. It is not that any particular department at the JCC is more or less important than any other, but that every department, if it loses sight of the community it serves or its values and sensibilities that inform its programming decisions, has really failed in its mission on a larger level. All that has been said above can be said about my own Jewish learning and the mini-sabbatical I will take this summer. People in the “business” of Jewish education need time to step away from their daily professional obligations and participate in learning themselves. My hope is that I return to the JCC with fresh ideas, sensitivities and energy in the fall. I look forward to sharing those ideas with you in September.

Looking for the Best Job on Earth? Be a Camp Counselor in 2009!

Every summer the JCC Day Camps hire Israeli counselors (Shlichim) for our summer camp. This is not only an incredible experience for the campers and staff, but also for the families that host these wonderful individuals. We are looking for families in the Houston area that would like to open their homes this summer. What a great opportunity for you to host a Shaliach and help them assimilate into American culture. Ideally we would like the host family to open their home for a two-week commitment (between June 4 - August 12) so the counselor is able to develop relationships with each family. It is very common for friendships to develop, and many families find themselves visiting our guests when they go to Israel. Sign up today, and find a part of Israel in your home this summer. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Randy Comensky at 713-551-7208 or rcomensky@jcchouston.org.

FUTSAL SOCCER LEAGUE Futsal is a very popular sport in South American countries. Most successful soccer players started out playing Futsal in Brazil and Uruguay. It is played with a smaller and heavier ball that makes it a very fast-paced and skilled game. It is played indoors (no walls) and five players per side, giving each player much more contact with the ball. This league will run for 8 weeks with playoffs and a final game. T-shirts, referees and prizes for the championship will be provided. Coord: Sergio Rosenhek Adults 16+ W
