Shabbatify Your Family With Us Melissa Brams with Emily & Abigail Brams

Got children in elementary school? Join us for a lively and meaningful Shabbat afternoon designed especially for families with children from pre-k through fifth grade. Our new monthly Shabbatify program offers a wonderful way to celebrate this special time and have fun together with your J family. Shabbatify starts with a whole family program such as Capture the Flag or Jewish Yoga. Then children move on to something like Gymnastics Play or Theatre Games, while parents have some grown-up time to enjoy their own activity. For example, adults may participate in a meditation session, or make chocolate collages while enjoying red wine. Many local guest experts have helped make our programming strong and special. We end the evening with Havdalah, guided by a local rabbi, cantor or song leader. This brings everyone back to the same spot to start the week together. Launched in February by the Bobbi and Vic Samuels Center for Jewish Living & Learning, Shabbatify has families from all over Houston playing and learning together. Camaraderie, relaxation and fun are just a few of the event’s ingredients that make it easy to get the kids off the couch and everyone coming back for more. “It was so great participating in an activity as a family and also with other Jewish families,” said parent Sandye Fertman. “It left us wanting to know when the next Shabbatify event was and making sure to circle it on our calendar.”

Why do you believe the J is an important place to support?

P owered by Your G enerosity –

An Interview with the Kruger Family Danielle and Noah Kruger and their two sons Nathan (5) and Andrew (2 ½) live in Meyerland and are members at the J. Danielle is a member of the J Camps committee, and Noah is a new member of the Board of Directors. Nate has attended camp at the J for the past two summers. As a family, they visit the pool frequently and attend Mischpacha & Me and other family programming. Danielle, along with her mom and sister, often take the opportunity for a girls night through Women’s Month and other cultural arts programming.

Danielle and Noah: The J affects the lives of so many people in our community. It provides our family with a sense of Jewish community and has programming that we can enjoy in all phases of our lives. We are proud to be able to give back financially to the J and support the J Annual Fund and Children’s Scholarship Ball. It is easy to get passionate about the J for all the good that it does. Do you have a special or earliest memory of your interaction with the J? Danielle: My earliest J memories are of ballet classes with Miss Maxine. I love that so many aspects of the J, including much of the wonderful staff, have remained constant, yet the facilities and programs have continued to evolve and improve over the years.

What is your J story? Danielle: The J has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From toddler gymnastics to day camp to lifeguarding, the J has been a backdrop for much of my life. There was a period in my 20s when I was not involved. Now, having children of my own, we have become more and more involved with the J again. Noah: For me, the J really became a part of my life once we moved to Meyerland as I’m not originally from Houston. Now I look forward to our family time at the J and hope my kids will have the same opportunities with their families one day. What does a day at the J mean for you? Danielle and Noah: An ideal “J day” would be dropping off the kids at babysitting so we can work out at the fitness center and then going as a family to enjoy the pool. We never make plans to meet up with anyone at the pool because we can always count on either seeing someone we know or meeting the parents of the friends Nate knows from camp. We have also spent the past couple of years participating in the Tashlich program during the high holy days. That program is something we have come to look forward to as we mark the New Year.

From L to R: Nate, Danielle, Andrew and Noah

What has been the most meaningful part of your involvement at the J? Noah: This may sound cheesy but seeing our children learn to swim has been very significant for us. The Talmud (Kiddushin 29a) enumerates three specific requirements for what parents must teach their children: the Torah, how to make a living and how to swim. Seeing Nate and Andrew love the water and Nate have so much success in swimming after only a short time at camp has been very meaningful for me.
