A Highlight of the J’s Arts and Culture 2015-2016 Season We are delighted to bring you a diverse and meaningful 20152016 season of performing, cinema, literary and visual arts. Our Arts and Culture program, with its rich 43-year history, is highly regarded throughout the U.S. for providing a platform for emerging and mid-sized dance companies, musical and visual artists, theatre, filmmakers and emerging and established authors. Always a stand-out, the Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Fair this year boasts former Meet the Press host David Gregory (How’s Your Faith) and NBC Weatherman Al Roker (The Storm Of The Century: Tragedy, Heroism, Survival, and the Epic True Story of America's Deadliest Natural Disaster: The Great Gulf Hurricane of 1900). Joshua Cohen (Book of Numbers: A Novel), described as “a monstrous talent” by Bookforum, joins this stellar event featuring 25 authors, five films, theatre and music. We invite you to experience a myriad of sounds in a music season that features Israeli artists, premieres, David Krohn and the return of Keyboard Conversations® with Jeffrey Siegel. As one of the most anticipated dance events in Houston, Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre presents Houston based companies, workshops, and tapper Acia Gray, Nicholas Young, Tapestry Dance Company and the Pelayo Jazz Trio. In the spring, NobleMotion Dance Company will present L’Dor Vador: Poetry and Dance from three generations of a Jewish Family. 6
Our Houston Jewish Film Festival celebrates its 12th season presenting new, first-rate films with meaningful Jewish or Israeli content. Our second revived theatre season opens with Wrestling Jerusalem, a one-man show that illustrates diverse feelings about Jerusalem portrayed through dozens of characters and concludes with Stars of David, Story to Song, based on the book by Abigail Pogrebin and conceived by Aaron Harnick. New to the season is Tastings, an evening of culinary and performing arts where guests will enjoy a five course fine dining experience paired with a different art form for each course. We invite you to take part in one of the most vibrant Jewish arts and culture programs in the country. Become a Patron of the Arts and enjoy special benefits throughout the season including access to many events and exclusive author/artists meet and greets. As a Patron you will also receive special invitations and preferred seating. To become a Patron or renew your support, please contact Judy Weil, donor services coordinator, at jweil@erjcchouston.org or 713.729.3200 ext. 3103 for more information. Explorers is being offered at the J on Wednesdays this fall for children entering kindergarten through second grade. In the Jewish Explorers session, children will learn about the joys of Jewish living by traveling through time, space and tradition. Immediately following Jewish Explorers, the Hebrew Explorers session offers students the opportunity to focus on modern Hebrew language acquisition. Hebrew will be taught in a fun and developmentally appropriate way for young children to acquire new language skills. Nomi Barancik, Kindercamp Judaics educator and J staff member of the Center for Jewish Living and Learning (CJLL), will teach this class.
Families can pick one or both classes, which will be offered in consecutive order. The program is conveniently scheduled during the hours of the J’s KidZone after school program. Reimagining Merfish: New and Improved Center for Teens and the Community The J knows teens. For the last 79 years the J has been positively influencing young Jewish minds with programs, mentors and friendships. In 1997, JCC leadership purchased the old Meyerland Club and established the Merfish Teen Center, the only one of its kind in the country. Affectionately called, “The Merf,” the building is the home to camps and teen programming including J Teens, BBYO, J-SERVE and Connect 68 for tweens. Located at the corner of S. Rice and N. Braeswood, anybody from this community is familiar with the old Meyerland relic with its mid-century architecture and infrastructure. But modern-day teens are sophisticated and technologically savvy. “It was time for a facelift. Teens spend time there and want a place they can be comfortable. We have updated the entire building, creating an internet café with plugs for devices, a lounge with tiered seating, and want it to be a place that teens can meet, plug in and do homework or just visit,” said Debbie Kaplan, Evelyn Rubenstein JCC President. Phase 1 of the million-dollar renovation is near completion, thanks to generous donors from across the community. Debbie Kaplan and Lauren Kaufman Blachman, along with a team of staff and volunteers, have spent the last year co-chairing the Merfish Renovation Campaign Committee. While The Merf has traditionally been a home for teens, its use throughout the 20
community has expanded in recent years. An athletic hub, the Merfish is used by Meyerland Soccer, Emery/Weiner for tennis and the pool is used by the Coogs Swim Team. Adults use it to play bridge and attend continuing Jewish education classes. It is also home to the J’s Camp Kaleidoscope during the summer. So when committee members first met, brainstorming ideas quickly went from renovate and redesign, to reimagine. Lauren Kaufman Blachman shared, “It’s been exciting to see concepts quickly become reality. As you enter, you see a contemporary space any organization or family would want to use for a meeting, life cycle event or gathering. With the internal phase complete, we are excited to move to the outside where we are planning a fire pit, a shaded BBQ and picnic space and many other beautification concepts. Meyerland is a vibrant community and we want to maximize the J’s last green space for teens, adults and families to continue to create memories.” The Merfish will be available for rentals beginning in September. Contact Melissa Gordon at 713.729.3200 ext. 3202 to learn more. To get involved with the reimagining part of the project, contact Lauren Kaufman Blachman or Lewis Kalmans, co-chairs of the planning and fundraising initiative. Construction for Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in January 2016.

Sources will be Jewish women’s writings and, in one instance, excerpts from a film produced, directed, and written by a Mexican-Jewish woman. Readings from 17th century Glickel of Hameln to 20th century Ruby Daniel of Cochin (and, after her aliyah, resident of an Ashkenazic kibbutz), reveal surprising leadership, resilience and Jewish commitment that spans centuries and continents. Brotherhood Week, Chanukah, and Christmas: Identity Politics and Interfaith Celebrations in Post-WWII America
Following World War II, many American Jews participated eagerly in efforts to increase interfaith understanding and goodwill between adherents of Judaism and Christianity. This lecture will examine the delicate politics of postwar interfaith relations between Jews and Christians through the lens of holiday celebrations, which provide opportunities to reaffirm and redefine identity in spaces both public and private. Philosemitism in Europe and the United States after World War Two: A Moral Revolution?
The lecture discusses the appearance of new and favorable perceptions of Jews, Judaism and Jewishness in the aftermath of World War II and compares “philosemitism” in Europe and United States from the point of view of theology, philosophy and cultural expressions. Lecturer: Dr. Daniel Cohen Oct 21 4:00 PM
The Man from Kutno: the Sad Case of Sholem Asch
In 1939, the beloved Yiddish writer Sholem Asch published his epic novel, The Nazarene, an imaginative recreation of the life and ministry of Jesus. Received favorably in the English-language press, The Nazarene and its Yiddish version, Der man fun natseres, were largely denounced. The reaction to the novel exposes many of the hidden conflicts within the Yiddish-speaking world and the American Jewish community during World War II and post-war. Dana and Kenneth Katz are long-time supporters of the J. “The J strikes a chord with us because it effectively strengthens our services and programming from infant to elder care and everything in between,” said Dana and Kenneth. “We have wonderful memories of growing up at the J, and now the children, through their involvement in multiple activities at the J, are also creating positive memories for themselves.”
