Brightening Lives for Twenty Years
O
n Saturday, February 13, the JCC will welcome more than 600 guests to the Westin Galleria for the 20th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball. Irvin Kaplan, for whom the Ball is named, had a long standing commitment to children’s causes and issues in our community. The Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund benefits children of all religious and ethnic backgrounds in need of financial assistance for preschools, infant care, after-school care, summer camp and special needs programs offered at the JCC. Each year more than 300 children are recipients of the proceeds.

Approximately 2,700 children, infant through teen, participate in JCC programs each year. The Center strives to provide the highest standards in activities, staff and facilities. The Children’s Scholarship Ball started 20 years ago with a group of a dozen women who came up with the idea of holding a gala to help raise money for children’s scholarships. The Ball continues to honor the most devoted and committed members of the community. This year’s theme “Brightening Lives for 20 Years” will focus on the successes made possible by a community who makes children a priority. The 2010 Ball will honor Joanne & Donald Brodsky and Imogen “Immy” Papadopoulos for their commitment to improving the quality of life for children and youth. Honorary Chairs are Barbara & J. Victor Samuels, Catherine Clark Mosbacher and Suzie & Honorable Alvin Zimmerman. The event chair is Patti Steiner. More than $7,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the Children’s Scholarship Ball. Approximately $375,000 in financial

assistance is given to families. Sixty percent of the recipients are from single-parent families with annual incomes ranging from $12,000-$22,000. The hope for the Ball is to raise enough money to maintain the level of financial aid that the JCC gives families and to expand programs and help even more children. You only have to look at the programs the JCC offers to know that children are a priority. In 2004, the JCC initiated the STARS preschool intervention program to better serve children with autism. The STARS program provides year-round, intensive educational support and multidisciplinary intervention for children ages two through five on the autism spectrum. What to Look for in a Jewish Preschool
T
he JCC is a place for every Jewish child. Little ones begin their Jewish journey in our Early Childhood Education programs at the Bertha Alyce Center and the Ellen Boniuk Center in West Houston. The schools are caring, skill-building, learning environments immersed with Judaic enrichment including music and Hebrew language instruction. Three Multi-Session Mini-Courses Focusing on Aspects of Biblical Studies
T
he Jewish Community Center is excited to host Dr. Yair Zakovitch as the 22nd Bunny and Leo Horvitz Scholar-in-Residence. Professor Yair Zakovitch’s primary interests are literary analysis, the history of beliefs and ideas, biblical historiography and early Jewish and Christian interpretation of the Bible. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. In Israel, Dr. Zakovitch is a well-known lecturer, teaching regularly at teachers’ seminars and continuing education programs as well as appearing on national radio and television programs. Literary Archeology and the Beginning of Exegesis is the topic of the opening night lecture of this year’s residency. In this lecture Professor Zakovitch will take one

Over the course of the residency, Dr. Zakovitch will offer three multisession mini-courses, with each focusing on a different aspect of Biblical Studies. The Monday evening mini-course will focus on biblical personalities. The Wednesday evening course will explore the relationship between religion, politics and sacred space. The Thursday evening course will discuss the biblical understanding of miracles and miraculous births. New to the program this year is the establishment of a mid-residency lecture. The topic of this lecture is Canonization and Interpretation. The lecture will focus on how the gradual development of the biblical canon affects the interpretation of the Bible as a whole. This lecture is scheduled for Sunday, February 7 at 11:00 AM.
The residency will conclude on Wednesday, February 17 at 8:00 PM with a closing lecture entitled Why was the Torah Given at Sinai? The Bible places great emphasis on the fact that the Torah was delivered directly from God to the Israelites in the wilderness. In this closing lecture, we will nevertheless uncover that there are many similarities between our Torah and the texts of surrounding societies at that time.
All lectures of the residency are open to the community at no cost. The three mini-courses are open to the public with an $18 series ticket. The festivities kick off with Celebrate Dance on January 7 at 7:00 PM The event honors Houston’s premier presenters who have helped cultivate the Houston dance community. What to Look for in a Jewish Preschool
T
he JCC is a place for every Jewish child. Little ones begin their Jewish journey in our Early Childhood Education programs at the Bertha Alyce Center and the Ellen Boniuk Center in West Houston. The schools are caring, skill-building, learning environments immersed with Judaic enrichment including music and Hebrew language instruction. Along with a flexible early childhood curriculum that focuses on learning pre-kindergarten skills, kids get Judaic enrichment taught by highly qualified teachers and staff. “The JCC Early Childhood Centers allow Jewish children an opportunity to engage in high quality, innovative and meaningful Jewish and early childhood experiences. The flexible programs are designed to build on the individual strengths while developing a love of learning and maintaining a close relationship with Jewish values and culture” said Bonnie Kasner, Director of Early Childhood Education at the JCC.
The Center for Jewish Living and Learning at the JCC believes these informal Jewish education experiences are an important way for parents to make their child’s Jewish journey an impactful one. “Raising a Jewish child means exposing kids to Judaism in diverse environments. Even if your child receives a first-class education at a Jewish day school, there is value in being connected to the larger Jewish community and participating in programs that only the JCC can offer,” said Jonathan Fass, Co-Director of the Center for Jewish Living and Learning at the JCC Houston. “If your child goes to public school, programs at the JCC may be a way to explore Jewish life after school, on weekends and during the summer.” Children who grow up at the JCC are offered opportunities to explore Jewish life through Summer Day Camp, youth activities, teen socialaction programs, JCC Maccabi and ArtsFest, the annual Jewish Book and Arts Fair, the Children’s Performing Arts Series and Holiday programs.
Three Multi-Session Mini-Courses Focusing on Aspects of Biblical Studies
T
he Jewish Community Center is excited to host Dr. Yair Zakovitch as the 22nd Bunny and Leo Horvitz Scholar-in-Residence. Professor Yair Zakovitch’s primary interests are literary analysis, the history of beliefs and ideas, biblical historiography and early Jewish and Christian interpretation of the Bible. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. In Israel, Dr. Zakovitch is a well-known lecturer, teaching regularly at teachers’ seminars and continuing education programs as well as appearing on national radio and television programs. Literary Archeology and the Beginning of Exegesis is the topic of the opening night lecture of this year’s residency. In this lecture Professor Zakovitch will take one

biblical narrative and reconstruct its history, demonstrating the various techniques and phenomena of biblical exegesis. This opening night lecture is scheduled for Sunday, January 31 at 7:30 PM. Over the course of the residency, Dr. Zakovitch will offer three multisession mini-courses, with each focusing on a different aspect of Biblical Studies. The Monday evening mini-course will focus on biblical personalities. The Wednesday evening course will explore the relationship between religion, politics and sacred space. The Thursday evening course will discuss the biblical understanding of miracles and miraculous births. New to the program this year is the establishment of a mid-residency lecture. The topic of this lecture is Canonization and Interpretation. The lecture will focus on how the gradual development of the biblical canon affects the interpretation of the Bible as a whole. This lecture is scheduled for Sunday, February 7 at 11:00 AM.
The residency will conclude on Wednesday, February 17 at 8:00 PM with a closing lecture entitled Why was the Torah Given at Sinai? The Bible places great emphasis on the fact that the Torah was delivered directly from God to the Israelites in the wilderness. In this closing lecture, we will nevertheless uncover that there are many similarities between our Torah and the texts of surrounding societies at that time.
All lectures of the residency are open to the community at no cost. The three mini-courses are open to the public with an $18 series ticket. ance Month at the Kaplan Theatre celebrates three decades of dance showcasing Houston’s talent as well as national dancers, teachers and choreographers. The Jewish Community Center of Houston will host a series of performances, concerts and workshops January 7 through February 20. The festivities kick off with Celebrate Dance on January 7 at 7:00 PM The event honors Houston’s premier presenters who have helped cultivate the Houston dance community. They are: June Christensen, Society for the Performing Arts; Andrea Cody, Dance Houston; Christina Giannelli, Dance Source Houston; Nancy Henderek, Dance Salad; Sixto Wagan, DiverseWorks and Jennifer Wood/Louie Saletan, Barnevelder Movement/Arts

Brightening Lives for Twenty Years
O
n Saturday, February 13, the JCC will welcome more than 600 guests to the Westin Galleria for the 20th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball. Irvin Kaplan, for whom the Ball is named, had a long standing commitment to children’s causes and issues in our community. The Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund benefits children of all religious and ethnic backgrounds in need of financial assistance for preschools, infant care, after-school care, summer camp and special needs programs offered at the JCC. Each year more than 300 children are recipients of the proceeds.

Approximately 2,700 children, infant through teen, participate in JCC programs each year. The Center strives to provide the highest standards in activities, staff and facilities. The Children’s Scholarship Ball started 20 years ago with a group of a dozen women who came up with the idea of holding a gala to help raise money for children’s scholarships. The Ball continues to honor the most devoted and committed members of the community. This year’s theme “Brightening Lives for 20 Years” will focus on the successes made possible by a community who makes children a priority. The 2010 Ball will honor Joanne & Donald Brodsky and Imogen “Immy” Papadopoulos for their commitment to improving the quality of life for children and youth. Honorary Chairs are Barbara & J. Victor Samuels, Catherine Clark Mosbacher and Suzie & Honorable Alvin Zimmerman. The event chair is Patti Steiner. More than $7,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the Children’s Scholarship Ball. Approximately $375,000 in financial

assistance is given to families. Sixty percent of the recipients are from single-parent families with annual incomes ranging from $12,000-$22,000. The hope for the Ball is to raise enough money to maintain the level of financial aid that the JCC gives families and to expand programs and help even more children. You only have to look at the programs the JCC offers to know that children are a priority. In 2004, the JCC initiated the STARS preschool intervention program to better serve children with autism. The STARS program provides year-round, intensive educational support and multidisciplinary intervention for children ages two through five on the autism spectrum. Brightening Lives for Twenty Years
O
n Saturday, February 13, the JCC will welcome more than 600 guests to the Westin Galleria for the 20th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball. Irvin Kaplan, for whom the Ball is named, had a long standing commitment to children’s causes and issues in our community. The Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund benefits children of all religious and ethnic backgrounds in need of financial assistance for preschools, infant care, after-school care, summer camp and special needs programs offered at the JCC. Each year more than 300 children are recipients of the proceeds.

Approximately 2,700 children, infant through teen, participate in JCC programs each year. The Center strives to provide the highest standards in activities, staff and facilities. The Children’s Scholarship Ball started 20 years ago with a group of a dozen women who came up with the idea of holding a gala to help raise money for children’s scholarships. The Ball continues to honor the most devoted and committed members of the community. This year’s theme “Brightening Lives for 20 Years” will focus on the successes made possible by a community who makes children a priority. The 2010 Ball will honor Joanne & Donald Brodsky and Imogen “Immy” Papadopoulos for their commitment to improving the quality of life for children and youth. Honorary Chairs are Barbara & J. Victor Samuels, Catherine Clark Mosbacher and Suzie & Honorable Alvin Zimmerman. The event chair is Patti Steiner. More than $7,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the Children’s Scholarship Ball. Approximately $375,000 in financial

assistance is given to families. Sixty percent of the recipients are from single-parent families with annual incomes ranging from $12,000-$22,000. The hope for the Ball is to raise enough money to maintain the level of financial aid that the JCC gives families and to expand programs and help even more children. You only have to look at the programs the JCC offers to know that children are a priority. In 2004, the JCC initiated the STARS preschool intervention program to better serve children with autism. The STARS program provides year-round, intensive educational support and multidisciplinary intervention for children ages two through five on the autism spectrum.
