Another Year of Enriching Children's Lives
A
fter a hugely successful gala and silent auction last February, Erica Levit and Marci Rosenberg continue their fundraising efforts as co-chairs for the 21st Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball, Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Westin Galleria. As always, a highlight of the evening is the extensive silent auction which annually raises more than $100,000. Meredith Schlanger and Jennifer Haikin Zach will chair this year’s auction for the 2nd time. Donations that exceed $1,500 will be featured in the online auction and will link directly to the donor’s website, offering an opportunity to bid “online” for items in advance of the event.
The evening will honor the Houston Rockets, the JCC’s Nancy Lerner and KPRC’s Khambrel Marshall for their commitment to children in our community. Fundraising efforts put forth in their honor will benefit the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to hundreds of families who want to enrich their children’s lives with programs at the JCC. For general questions about the 2011 Ball, contact Melissa Gordon, Director of Special Events at 713.729.3200 ext. 3103 or mgordon@jcchouston.org.

Legacy Planning at the JCC
Talmudic story tells of a traveler who once saw a man planting a carob tree. He asked him when he thought the tree would bear fruit.
“After 70 years,” was the reply.
“Do you expect to live 70 years and eat the fruit of your labor?” “I did not find the world desolate when I entered it,” said the old man, “and as my ancestors planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.” For more than 75 years, our JCC has proven to be Houston’s dynamic center of Jewish life. The JCC turns everyday minutes into Jewish moments and makes for lifetime memories. There are genera-

Individuals making a legacy gift to the JCC ensure that the JCC can continue to impact the lives of future generations. Legacy giving, which can be flexibly arranged, is a wonderful way to easily provide benefits to the many children, adults and seniors that will be participating in JCC programs in the years to come.

tions of Houston Jews whose JCC experiences shaped their identity and influenced their communal values. We all can have a role in ensuring and shaping our future. This will be accomplished through our new JCC Legacy Society. Think of it as your way to inscribe you or your family’s signature on the future of the JCC and Jewish life in Houston. As the above Talmudic story describes, this is our opportunity to create a bridge between those who came before us and those who will come after us. The JCC Legacy Society provides an opportunity to become a philanthropist and help shape the future of our JCC through estate planning. Look for more details in the upcoming months that will include a complete listing of popular and simple charitable planned giving options. ext summer, the JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® will take place in Israel for the first time. Hosted by Games partner, Maccabi World Union, this landmark 12-day experience will include five days of art workshops, competition in team and individual sports, a Day of Caring and Sharing project, a weekend home hospitality experience and several days for touring the Jewish homeland. The JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest in Israel are planned for
July 24 – August 5, 2011. There will also be an additional JCC Maccabi Games in Philadelphia, PA and Springfield, MA for athletes only on August 14 - 19, 2011. “Houston has had one of the most successful Maccabi programs in the country for many years now and this is an exciting new opportunity,” said Jeremy Samuels, JCC Houston team leader. “This long-time dream of the Maccabi movement is coming to reality. Teens, 14-17 years old, will have an opportunity to compete and perform in their sport/art, discipline and will also have time to tour the sites of Israel and spend time with a host family.”
The JCC Maccabi Games are an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer since 1982. JCC Maccabi ArtsFest began in 2006 and is a week-long arts experience for creative Jewish teens entering 8 - 12 grades. The combined Games are the largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world. Today, close to 5,000 teens participate in the JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest each summer.

fter a hugely successful gala and silent auction last February, Erica Levit and Marci Rosenberg continue their fundraising efforts as co-chairs for the 21st Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball, Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Westin Galleria.
