Art Camp Director Tobi Arsham with some of her J Camps art students.

Giving Kids A Chance

Children's Scholarship Ball E

very day through the halls of the J, children are seen playing together on the playground, singing HaMotzi (prayer before the meal) in their classrooms and walking throughout the building to attend enrichment classes like art, gymnastics, tennis or theatre. Their infectious energy and zest for life is the Spirt of the J, and it is contagious to all those that come through our doors. For some families, giving their children these enriching experiences can create financial hardship. This is why the Children’s Scholarship Ball benefitting the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund was created. The need for financial assistance is ever increasing, and we hope to always be able to support families who are not able to pay.

It is extremely difficult to put into words how much the scholarship program has benefited our family. Our family is young, and we have worked hard to establish solid careers; however, we have struggled financially. As our children are our most precious belongings, we of course want only the best for them. We are truly thankful that our children have been given this opportunity, and it is directly as a result of the availability of scholarships. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The assistance is appreciated more than anyone can imagine. After all, it is helping to shape the future! – BAS Parent

This is one of the many real stories that exemplify what the Children’s Scholarship Ball is all about. With community support, the J has proudly given out more

than $1.1 million dollars in scholarship assistance since 1990. In its inception, the fund was created to ensure that all children from six-week-old infants to teenagers, of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and with different abilities, can participate in early childhood care, educational activities, special needs programs and J Camps. Each year more than 300 children receive scholarship assistance.

We will celebrate that J Spirit at the 27th Annual Children’s Scholarship Ball on March 4, 2017 at the Royal Sonesta. The black tie gala will include dinner, dancing and an extensive silent auction. Ball Honorees Lauren and Jeremy Blachman and Scott McClelland were selected for their efforts to improve the quality of life for children and youth. Ball Chairs Abby Ackerman and Erika Kaufman along with Silent Auction Chairs Marci Gilbert and Ashley Roseman ask that you help fulfill our mission and continue the tradition.

Your New NOW

Resolution F

or some of you, as the New Year approaches – so does mounting pressure to make it better. Don’t trap yourself into saying, “I’ll try again next year.” Why wait with fear and trepidation? There is no time limit on resolutions. There is no formal start date for making a change in your life. January 1 is arbitrary: you have the opportunity to do something NOW. Evelyn Rubenstein JCC Fitness member Kristina Boshernitzan has taken the ‘NOW’ Year resolution to heart. She jumped into action and is now exercising in the Fitness Center most days of the week. “I love the new classes. I am so excited to try new types of exercise and find out what suits me best and gets me into the best shape possible. And I always bring a friend to make it more fun,” said Kristina. “As a mother of three kids, time at the Fitness Center is my time to work on getting back my strength and stamina.” Embrace the New Year like Kristina and get a healthy head start NOW. Join a fitness class that will get you spinning (Cycle Boot Camp) and dancing for joy (Zumba). Or maybe try one that lets you get in touch with your inner consciousness through movements and dialogue you can do on your own at home (Meditation Workshop). Belly up to the barre for some toning, strengthening and

26

coordination work (Barre Fusion). Try something different like using fitness as an empowerment tool, and start the journey of living up to your physical potential with exercise (Defense Fitness). There is also no better time than NOW to start eating better. Don’t worry about losing weight – just work on decreasing processed foods, increase fruits and veggies, focus on whole grains, lean meats and low-fat dairy, and kick sugar to the curb. Diet is already a large part of the battle for good health, and going into the New Year with good food habits in place will make you feel that much better. Forget about having enough time, focus on NOW. You can get fit in a short period of time: start with 30 minutes a day and build from there. Try strength exercises that build endurance in under 30 minutes (Strength Express) or a core strengthening class (Abs & More). Much like January 1, age is an arbitrary number when it comes to getting fit. You can build strength, flexibility and coordination no matter what your age (Prime Time Fitness 60+). Embrace the New Year, but don’t bother with a New Year’s resolution. Instead, make your new NOW resolution!

MAKING ART BUILDING COMMUNITY

C

reating art cultivates a strong sense of community for both children and adults. Working together to solve problems with beautiful solutions helps us develop lasting bonds with others. This year, we are striving to create new social opportunities for the community by expanding the Children’s Visual Art Classes and Adult Painting Program. Children’s classes are expanding to include kindergarten through 8th grade. Instructor Carolyn Catlos has already seen the rewards from the new Judaic Art, Visual Art and Ceramics offerings. “It is so exciting to be able to offer children and teens an opportunity to grow, learn and take creative risks together,” said Catlos. “I love the sense of ownership and achievement the children exhibit as they learn to master new skills. They become a real ‘studio family’ over the course of the semester, eager to help one another succeed.” Painting instructor Susan Wingfield shares the sentiment of building community through common activity. She notes that painting is one of the highest forms of brain exercise and that there is a growing body of evidence showing that active participation in the fine arts helps delay dementia and promote cognitive health. “A strong connection has developed among our students,” said Wingfield. “Everybody participates equally in the learning, critiquing and instruction. Each student has an opportunity to learn and to share with others their knowledge and skill. It is a cooperative learning environment where everyone takes turns playing the role of teacher and student.” Susan is ready to challenge her students even more and has introduced a lecture series on design and composition. In this series, students will delve into the art of crafting a visual message through concepts of color, texture, value and composition. Susan finds great reward in watching her students grow and discover new skills and friendship through art. Join the celebration of art and community and register for a class starting in January. 31

P owered by Your G enerosity –

An Interview with the Guinn Family Kami and Clay Guinn and their two daughters Mia (6 ½) and Evie (2) live in Bellaire. They joined the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC a few years ago. Clay is a native Houstonian, growing up in the West University area and Kami moved to Houston from Trinidad when she was in middle school.

L to R: Mia, Evie, Clay and Kami

What is your J Story? Kami: We found the J in a time of crisis. When our daughter Mia was 3 years old, the church-school she attended abruptly closed. It was the place we thought we belonged. Wait lists at other preschools were full. Our good friends and J members, Renna and Byron Cherry, recommended we contact the Bertha Alyce School. Mia started in PreK 3; we were so grateful there was a spot for her! It was instantly a great match! BAS is such a warm, welcoming and safe environment – we had such an easy transition. It turned out the J is the place for us – it was just meant to be! Once Evie was born, there was no question we would enroll her in the Infant Care program.

What is a typical day at the J like for you? Clay: We are both working parents. Kami takes Evie to school every morning and I pick up her up after work with Mia in tow. Every time Mia walks into BAS and sees her old teachers and her gymnastics instructor Mr. Aaron, she completely lights up! Even two years after graduating she still gets excited to see them, and they are always so warm and friendly. During the summer, we take both girls for swimming lessons and gymnastics. It is not always easy to find one place that satisfies the needs of two children who are four years apart in age. It is so nice to have found a facility with activities that meet the needs of both, and we have taken advantage of those resources. Mia participates in the Girl Scout Troop that meets at the J, and together we’ve enjoyed attending the Daddy Daughter Dances. What has been the most meaningful part of your involvement at the J? Clay: We are very happy to have our daughters’ learning about Jewish values, rituals and traditions, as part of their spiritual knowledge. Mia still says the Ha’Motzi (the prayer before meals) before dinner. It is a way of reflecting every night and helps us broaden our prospective. We have evolved from “we’re doing this for our kids” to being part of a ‘community’ with other parents, so our experience has become more meaningful. We’ve made connections with J staff who are BAS parents, sharing and inviting us over for Jewish holidays. In talking to Rabbi Jill Levy, I learned we have a friend in common who lived in Seattle when Jill and her family were living there. We found out a college friend of Kami’s took dance from Ms. Maxine! These second-level connections further validate why we truly “belong” here! Why do you believe the J is an important place to support? Kami: When the information about the J’s Annual Fund came in the mail, we not only wanted to give back because of what the J has done for our family, but also because of what the J does for the community. Although we were not personally affected by the recent floods in Meyerland, we were so impressed with how the J jumped into action to help. It’s heart warming to see the community outreach in the way of Meals on Wheels and J Ride. We were not aware of all the initiatives, efforts and support they J provided in a time of need.

To join others in powering the J Annual Fund, visit erjcchouston.org/annualfund or contact Anita Bormaster, Director of Annual Giving, at 713.595.8192. 38
