Lectures, intimate learning sessions and mini-courses will explore rarely considered dimensions of Jewish life and thought during this 3-week residency. Jewish magic, women mystics and kabbalistic diagrams, Dr. Yossi Chajes along with timely sessions devoted to the ancient wisdom of the holidays of Tu B’Shvat and Purim, will reveal rich, rare and fascinating aspects of Jewish culture. J. H. (Yossi) Chajes (Ph.D., Yale University) is Associate Professor in the Department of Jewish History at the University of Haifa and the director of its Center for the Study of Jewish Cultures.
Opening Lecture: Secret Jewish Histories: Revealing the Hidden Worlds of Jewish Culture

auren Straus Sorkin, Amira Grinberg Staller and Jennifer Haikin Zach are longtime friends fiercely working to rock the 26th Annual Children’s Scholarship
Ball as ball chairs. The themed black tie evening of dinner, dancing and silent auction on February 27, 2016 promises to be a memorable experience you will not want to miss.
Jennifer served as 2015 Ball Chair along with her husband Photo by Mark Katz
Ron, while Amira and Lauren co-chaired the incredible silent auction that raised more than $104,000.
“I have experienced the Ball as a child, teenager, staff
member, volunteer, and now as a chair for the second time,” said Jennifer. “As a child, I took for granted all of the amazing activities and programs I participated in at the J. But now as a parent, I recognize some families cannot participate in all that the J offers without assistance. That is why Lauren, Amira and I are so passionate about the mission of ensuring that no child is turned away due to a family’s inability to pay. It is up to all of us to ensure their future.”
“We’re excited to pass the torch along to the new
2016 auction chairs Abby Ackerman and Melissa Goodman and work with them to make it even more successful,” said Amira.
The evening will honor community members Ann and
J. Kent “Kenny” Friedman and Erica and Benjy Levit. Joyce and Arthur Schechter, Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff, and Marci Rosenberg and Ben Samuels will serve as Honorary Chairs for these deserving Honorees.
Fundraising efforts put forth in honor of these very
deserving couples will benefit the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund, which provides aid to hundreds of families who want to enrich their children’s lives with programs at the J. In the early 1990s, a group of loving
entrepreneur, made lasting contributions to the Jewish community and to the community at large. Since its inception over two decades ago, the Children’s Scholarship Ball has generated approximately $10.3 million for the Fund, providing more than 6,700 scholarships, so that children from six week old infants to teenagers, of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and with different abilities, can enjoy stimulating early childhood care, educational activities, special needs programs and summer day camp at the J. The success of last year’s Ball allowed the J to fulfill the $450,000 in commitments to families needing financial assistance.
