There were two vibes governing the Globes this year: there were those who glittered in silver and gold and those who floated onto the carpet in a flurry of sugary chiffon and old-school, romantic floorsweepers. Felicity Jones and Hailee Steinfeld led the latter group while everyone from Nicole Kidman to Naomie Harris fronted the former.

Forget your traditional smoky eye because the Globes red carpet was all about blush-coloured lids. Everyone from Lily Collins to Emma Stone sported a romantic-hued shadow and we’re totally sold.

As she gears up for the release of her new film Jackie, Natalie Portman still seemed to be channelling the late, great Jacqueline Kennedy with her canary yellow Prada shift. Never mind that it’s a colour the former First Lady herself wore, Natalie’s hair, jewels and poise seemed to invoke Jackie O’s 60s glamour, too.

We rode out the boho days with her, embraced the whole knickers-overtights phenomenon circa 2007 and now we’re digging out our pearls. Yep, Sienna made this age-old accessory cool again, sporting a necklace and bracelets on both wrists as add-ons to her Michael Kors dress. Necklace, £16, John Lewis

OK, so it wasn’t actually magic but there was just something about Michelle Williams’ black ribbon choker that was so simple, so unexpected and yet… so right. It made her Louis Vuitton gown look even more sensational and, as luck would have it, we can all buy our very own for just £3. God love the Globes!

Suit Up Proving that red carpet glamour isn’t all about gowns, Octavia Spencer, Kathryn Hahn and Evan Rachel Wood all made a case for the suit. Explaining why she chose her Altuzarra look, Evan said: ‘I decided early in the year not to wear any dresses to awards shows to be a gentle reminder to young girls and women that you’re not required one if you don’t want to.’ Preach.

Tracee ellis ross Best Actress, TV Series ‘This is for all of the women, women of colour and colourful people, whose stories, ideas and thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. But I want you to know that I see you – we see you.’ claire Foy Best Actress, TV Drama ‘I really wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for some extraordinary women. I’m going to thank them. One is Queen Elizabeth II – she’s been at the centre of the world for the past 63 years and I think the world could do with a few more women at the centre of it, if you ask me.’ r ya n g o s l i n g Best Actor, Musical/Comedy ‘While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer. If she hadn’t have taken all that on so that I could have this experience, there would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you.’

MBB Conquers The Carpet We’re still searching for a way to fill the void that Stranger Things left behind. Season two is coming this summer but until then we’ll have to content ourselves with red carpet sightings of Millie Bobby Brown who, at just 12 YEARS OLD, sure knows how to work the camera. In Jenny Packham and Sophia Webster, no less.

Meryl’s speech caused such a furore that online searches for the video shot to over a whopping 8,000 per cent. Looks like we have a winner...

s J p ’ s T r i b u T e In her white Vera Wang gown, with her braids piled high, Sarah Jessica Parker made her own sartorial tribute to Carrie Fisher, otherwise known as Princess Leia, who sadly passed away at the end of last month.

Meryl sTreep Cecil B DeMille Award for Outstanding Contributions To The World Of Entertainment ‘We have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should be very proud of the work Hollywood honours here tonight. As my dear friend, the departed Princess Leia, said to me once: “Take your broken heart, make it into art.”’

It might be an oldie, but boy is this still a goodie. As Kate Bosworth shows, the key to pulling off a parka lies both in the length and the trim. Opt for styles that fall just above the knee with furry detail in darker hues – it looks superluxe. hances are you’ve already heard of the much-hyped phenomenon that is ‘hygge’ (pronounced hoo-gah) but, in case you’re totally unaware, let us bring you up to speed. It’s a Danish word that has no direct translation in the English language but basically sums up a mood of making everyday things more meaningful or beautiful. It’s a blissful state of being, which alludes to being completely snug and content. Sounds nice, huh? Although it may be a hard concept to put into words (the closest we have at our disposal is ‘cosy’), as far as fashion’s concerned, its purpose reads loud and clear. Love it or hate it, since this Scandi export swept the nation, the high street’s followed with a bounty of toasty treasures. Think faux fur stoles, woolly coats, shearling booties and more cashmere than the Queen has in her wardrobe archives. We never liked body-con much anyway…

If there’s one reason to feel good right now it’s the new collection from M&S, which proves that this high street stalwart just keeps getting better. Don’t believe us? Just look… HannaH Banks-Walker @HBanksWalker

I

t’s often said that fashion is a young person’s game. Trends are but a fleeting phenomenon, the pace is relentless. How, then, do you explain the 132-year-old force still managing to create classic, well-made, utterly irresistible clothes that undoubtedly appeal to just about every age group? That force is, of course, Marks & Spencer, which, after announcing it was closing stores at the end of last year, has bounced back with a spring/summer collection that’s so good we can’t stop looking at it. There are some serious showstoppers: chinoiserie silk tops tie at the waist while billowing midi skirts look hand-painted. A gingham ruffle skirt promises to be a sellout (it’s not dissimilar to the Monki version we spotted on almost every Insta blogger), a fuchsia dress with trumpet sleeves is reminiscent of Roksanda, embroidered denim jackets are paired with blush tulle and there are summer dresses that are the stuff of our holiday dreams. And that’s just the clothes. Lace-up ballet flats, petal-print kicks and Céline-inspired totes help make up the accessory haul, which is every bit as impressive. To go through the entire lookbook is to feel the sort of desire so intense it almost evokes a sense of panic. But don’t worry: while the accessories have been available for a while now, much of the collection is only landing in stores and online from now onwards. So your brand new wardrobe won’t be missing any of that M&S magic.

here’s not a lot to like about January. It’s still cold, the days are short and you don’t even have Christmas to look forward to. Your friends have all signed up for ‘Dry Jan’ and you’re regretting the festive generosity that overwhelmed you in December now that your credit card bill has arrived. It’s OK, we’re right there with you. We do, however, have news to cheer you up. Behold the rainbow-striped knit, the sartorial equivalent of a Caribbean cruise. This trend was kick-started by Gucci and since then streetstylers everywhere have snapped one up. We’ve even spotted high street tributes from the likes of Whistles. In terms of a mood booster, obviously the bright hues are an instant pick-me-up, but it also goes with everything you own – tucked into jeans, paired with midis or layered under pinafore dresses. Plus it’s warm and, therefore, practical. Sold. @lookmagazine

Andrew at the Globes with new love interest Riley Keough

An d r ew’s been supportive and is incredibly proud turned down so many guys in the past year’, a reconciliation may not be on the cards, as Andrew, 33, was spotted arriving at the after-party with rumoured new love interest Riley Keough – something which is said to have irritated Emma, who thought they might hang out together and celebrate. ‘Emma’s on cloud nine over her win, but Andrew turning up with Riley really did cast a shadow,’ says a long-time pal. ‘She knows he’s not serious about Riley, but she would have loved to have shared her victory with him.’ Emma and Andrew first met on the set of 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, with

Andrew revealing: ‘It was like I woke up when she came in. It was like diving into white-water rapids and having no desire to hang on to the side. Throughout shooting, it was wild and exciting.’ But despite seeming smitten, it was at last year’s Oscars, which Emma attended alone, that whispers began that the pair had gone their separate ways. In fact, sources tell Look the split was Emma’s decision, after reevaluating her career goals and deciding to relocate to LA, which put a strain on the relationship. ‘I think she still loves him, but she knows they split because she put her career over him,’ says a friend. ‘Her career took some hits and that’s when she put work number one over everything and moved to LA. But it didn’t work as Andrew preferred life in New York.’ It was in LA that Emma landed parts in both Birdman (for which she was nominated for a Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role) and La La Land, proving her decision has paid off. But the former couple’s mutual friends are determined the pair give things another go. ‘Everyone wants them to try again,’ says a pal. ‘They both still love each other, but they seem to think they’re better off as friends.’ After Emma’s success this week, we can see why.

And the film, which is showing at cinemas now, is a must-see. But while witty, talented Emma, 28, is reportedly shocked to have won (er, we saw it coming, Em), pals say there was another reason behind her emotional outpouring on stage. ‘Emma’s put everything into her career over the past few years,’ a friend tells Look. ‘She worked so hard on La La Land and really feels that, after a difficult time while going through a break-up, this is her moment.’ It’s been a tough 12 months for the actress, who split with Andrew Garfield in October 2015 after dating him on and off for three years. Emma’s remained silent on the situation and refused to comment on her relationship status last year, saying: ‘It’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.’ However, Andrew was the first person at the Globes to give his ex-girlfriend a standing ovation. And the pair were later seen giggling about his show-stopping kiss with Ryan Reynolds – an attempt to comfort his table mate after he lost out on the Best Actor in a musical/ comedy gong to Ryan Gosling. ‘There’s no doubt Emma and Andrew have a very strong connection,’ says a source. ‘He’s always been supportive of everything she does. He’s incredibly proud of her and told anyone who asked that she deserves it.’ While another source insists Emma’s ‘still not over Andrew – she’s

t’s been a whirlwind few months for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Following their separation in September, the pair are currently starring in Hollywood’s most talked-about divorce, have been at the centre of allegations and speculation and fought a bitter custody battle over their six children. But while the storm hasn’t cleared just yet, it seems the pair have finally reached some sort of agreement. In a statement released last week, Angelina, 41, and Brad, 53, agreed to handle their divorce privately, ensuring all court documents remain confidential and enlisting a private judge after Ange publicly ‘blindsided’ Brad on 20 September by serving him divorce papers. But while the couple – who were together for 12 years and married for two – have called a truce for the time being, sources close to Angelina reveal that behind closed doors, she’s reeling from the decision. While Brad’s request to seal all court documents was originally denied last month by Judge Richard Burdge Jr, Angelina agreed with the actor’s motives to keep the divorce under wraps for the sake of their children. But although Angelina has done this, a close pal has revealed to Look that the actress feels she’s been treated unfairly. Not only is Angelina still angry at what’s happened, but following Brad’s very warm welcome at the Golden Globes last week, she’s convinced

that Hollywood has taken his side. ‘The day after the Globes, she and Brad sat down with their lawyers and they both finally agreed to privacy,’ says our source. ‘She really had no choice. Angie still wants to have a career when all this is over and she’s realising that softening her stance with Brad is the best move she can make. But it goes against the grain because she’s still incredibly angry at what’s happened.’ While it seems Angelina is running out of allies in Hollywood, one woman fighting her corner and making sure she’s being taken seriously is celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser. Having represented a number of stars – including Kim Kardashian, Johnny Depp and Ryan Reynolds – Laura, 48, is renowned as an unstoppable force. Ange seems desperate to backtrack on her original plan, though, and it could be paying off as she’s reportedly just signed up for the second Maleficent movie for a six-figure salary. ‘Brad’s just grateful she’s agreed to the deal while Angie’s hoping it will start to change the public’s opinion of her,’ says our source. ‘Now they’re on the same page, especially with regard to the kids, they’re both hoping they can wrap this up and move on from it.’ Is this the calm before the storm?

Kim’s definitely back on social media – but something’s missing…

im Kardashian put an end to her social media hiatus just over two weeks ago. the reality tV star – who’s finally returned to instagram, twitter and snapchat three months on from her robbery in Paris – resumed her position a fortnight ago, amassing over 42 million views on snapchat and 84 million impressions on twitter in just 24 hours. Go Kim! But although the star’s proven she’s still the queen of social media, fans have been quick to notice a dramatic change. it’s no secret that prior to the robbery Kim regularly flaunted her wealth on social media – like her £3.5 million 20-carat engagement ring, pictured on instagram shortly before the raid. But fast-forward three months and she’s showcasing new bling on snapchat – a simple gold chain reading Calabasas, the name of a city in California, which sells for approximately $500 (£410) – and that’s not to mention her pared-down wardrobe. the price tags might still be designer – she’s not exactly broke – but a hoodie? on Kim K? So not what we expected. ‘Kim knows now that the robbers targeted her because of her jewellery,’ a source close to the star told Look. ‘she’s not taking any more chances. it’s

why she told her husband Kanye [west] she doesn’t want him to replace her diamond ring.’ and that’s not all. ‘Kim’s also toned down her look,’ says another friend. ‘she’s wearing her hair longer as a sort of cover that she can hide behind. she feels safer, in a weird kind of way.’ But Kardash diehards have accused Kim of toning it down a little too much, querying another series of low-key family snaps taken in what appears to be a retro-style living room. one user wrote: ‘why you in a poor people house in all these photos? who you faking you rich af [sic],’ which has been upsetting for Kim. ‘she’s still not oK. she still wells up when she talks about the attack,’ says our source. ‘it’s only the kids that are keeping her going right now.’ here’s to Kim returning to her normal self soon, minus the diamonds…

michelle keegan interview Michelle gets some practice in for the future on the show

With a new ITV drama under her belt, MK reveals all about balancing career goals, love and life in the public eye… WORDS: giSelle WainWRight

his is set to be Michelle Keegan’s year. With a career on the verge of going stratospheric, we have an inkling that MK’s about to own it – big time. Michelle is currently working her magic on the small screen, with ITV’s new three-part drama series Tina And Bobby (Friday, 9pm). Joined by Lorne MacFadyen (The Level, Grantchester) the duo play the original ‘golden couple’. When England won the World Cup in July 1966, Bobby Moore became a national hero. Swept up by the media frenzy and the country’s adoration, he and wife Tina became celebrity royalty and ITV’s bound-to-be-a-hit show charts the couple’s rise from humble childhood sweethearts to the dizzy heights of superstardom. There’s certainly a similarity to Mich’s own very public relationship with husband of two years Mark Wright. Excitement for the show has been at fever pitch – no pun intended – ever since Michelle was spotted filming, complete with blonde hair, last year. So is the 29-year-old feeling the pressure now the show’s on air?

How much did you know about Tina and Bobby Moore before you took on the role? Mark’s a West Ham supporter and knew a lot about both of them! He gave me the lowdown. Being from Essex, Mark told me what Bobby meant to people there – how he was regarded as one of the greatest defenders and what he meant to football. To hear it first-hand was unbelievable. But I’ll be honest, I didn’t know a lot about Tina outside of Bobby. The first time I heard their story was when I watched the documentary Bobby. A few weeks later I received the scripts, so it felt like fate. Tina Moore attended the read-through. Was it awkward portraying her while she was in the room? It was really daunting. I’d forgotten Tina was going to be there until @lookmagazine

I walked into the room. By then I’d seen pictures of her and had done some research. As soon as I saw her, I thought: ‘Oh my God, it’s Tina Moore – she’s here at the readthrough!’ I panicked. It’s a really daunting thing to do – I’m portraying Tina and I want to tell her story to the best of my ability. Tina shared a lot of stories and memories about their life together. It’s a real coincidence as I now live in Essex, close to Moorlands [the name of Bobby’s former home], so we had lots to talk about. You had to go blonde to play Tina. Were you scared? I went through a massive transformation. The colourist, Vernon Deysel at the Paul Edmonds salon, did a great job with changing the colour of my hair, though. I was apprehensive at first but I wanted to embrace the character fully. A lot of actors make dramatic changes to their appearance for the characters they’re playing. I thought this was a great role and I wanted to give everything to it. It was so different to Georgie in Our Girl who I’d just played for five months. You’d worked with the costume designer before, right? Yes, Andrew Cox worked on Our Girl too. We have a great relationship and he instantly knows my style and what I like. A lot of the crew from Our Girl

I panicked when I saw Tina at the readthrough

worked on Tina And Bobby, so it was nice to be starting a new project and working with friendly faces. I worked with director John McKay on the BBC’s Ordinary Lies too. How would you describe Tina? She’s a very confident and strong woman. She’s very independent too. A lot of the time Tina was the backbone of their marriage and Bobby always went to her for advice. Although she was in the background when it came to his career, in their marriage she was always at the forefront of their relationship. Was Tina’s strength part of the appeal? I love playing strong women, but I also loved the script. Tina’s story engaged me mentally and emotionally. She’s a really caring person. She’s a great mum and a brilliant wife. Her life was Bobby and you can tell that from the outset. Tina’s life was her family and she did everything she could for them. Could you relate to Tina? A little bit, yes. I think having a relationship that’s in the public eye certainly related to me.

The Year The Selfie DieS Throw out your selfie stick – you won’t be needing it any more…

I

t’s 8am, -3°C and hard to get out of bed. Trudging to the office half awake, you could easily make the mistake of reaching for your phone in a desperate bid to seek comfort. Isn’t everyone feeling blue? But if you were hoping your Facebook feed would be filled with photos of broken boilers and Lemsip, think again. The chapped-hand struggle is real and so is the infuriating stream of social media narcissism – AKA the selfie. Specifically those involving beaches, bikinis and six-packs. But before you unfollow

@lookmagazine

your entire Instagram (Louise Thompson, we’re looking at you) just for having a good time in January, we have some good news: selfies may have officially outstayed their welcome.

n oT- S o - p r eT T Y na r c i S S i S T S

Last year, researchers at the University of Toronto examined a group of die-hard selfie takers and found that those who regularly pose for themselves significantly overestimated how attractive they are. After instructing each participant to take a selfie, they asked the group how attractive they thought their friends would rate the photo. Not only were they deemed to be less attractive, they were also judged as lookmag

How many selfies is too m a ny?

@lookmagazine

‘significantly more narcissistic’ than photos taken by a separate group who don’t usually take selfies. And it seems the word is starting to leak out as more and more stars realise that posting these OTT snaps isn’t popular with their fanbase. If you need more evidence, just take a look at the sale of selfie sticks. Last October, John Lewis revealed that sales of the popular gadget were down 50 per cent on the previous year. Eagle-eyed Instagram users may also have noticed certain celebrities and lifestyle bloggers sharing numerous New Year posts promoting 2017 as the year of self-confidence and urging their followers to remove users whose posts fail to inspire and only make them feel bad about themselves.

S h oW i n G U p T h e S h o f f- o f f S And it seems as though some users have taken note. Although Made In Chelsea’s Louise Thompson is our ultimate fitness inspiration right now, Instagram users have been quick to criticise her relentless stream of bikini selfies on recent back-to-back holidays over Christmas and New Year (17 in one week, to be precise). One user commented: ‘I know when I’m really enjoying a holiday, I spend the whole time posing for narcissistic photos and carefully editing them before uploading them for self validation from people I don’t know on the internet… Oh no, wait, I don’t actually.’ Another had clearly seen enough: ‘I’m out. Unfollow.’ But Louise isn’t the only celeb showing off on social. If you’ve ever @lookmagazine

wondered how many selfies is too many selfies, you’re about to find out. In September last year, Kim Kardashian revealed she took a whopping 6,000 selfies on a four-day holiday in Mexico – that’s 1,500 a day. With Instagram users showing increasing dissatisfaction with celebrity posts, some stars have opted to disable comments after Instagram updated the platform last year. Model Chrissy Teigen chose to ban certain words from her posts in a bid to filter out negative comments and promote positivity. So is the selfie really over? Have we finally reached peak narcissist? It does feel like we could really be experiencing a change. Let’s just hope that 2017 is the year that champions real, un-Photoshopped beauty, à la make-up-free Alicia Keys – that’s what Look wants anyway...

My Skin Is Stressed Skin looking a little lacklustre due to a hectic lifestyle and lack of sleep? You need these tips now.

Cut down on these…

1. Sugar. Want some incentive to keep to those New Year resolutions? Well, read this: consuming a lot of sugar jump-starts glycation, a process that dehydrates your skin and toughens the top layer of cells. Yikes! Now that fourth cupcake doesn’t seem so tempting. 2. Booze. Need help cutting down on your alcohol intake? All those wines and gins will inflate your blood vessels, which disrupts circulation and oxygen flow, leading to unsightly red patches. Rescue it with: Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, £30 (01). Cooling and calming, it tops up your skin’s moisture levels, quenching its thirst so it looks and feels refreshed.

B e at t h at d a s ta r d ly Brrr…

Our complexions take a beating in biting winds and cold temps, which causes irritation. Then bacteria and pollution creep in, making your skin inflamed. Rescue it with: Avène Rich Skin Recovery Cream, £16.50 (02). It’s packed with thermal spring water to instantly soothe angry and inflamed skin.

03

02

e y e s a r e d e l i C at e , s o look after them…

The skin around your peepers is some of the thinnest on your body, which makes dry, indoor heat a real enemy. Rescue it with: Decléor Aurabsolu Intense Glow for Eyes £29.50 (03). Caffeine helps to de-puff bags, while vitamins B3 and CG act as a shield from further irritation. Orange pigments lay down a veil of light-reflecting radiance.

s ay n o t o s t r e s s spots

Stress is skin’s kryptonite. ‘The dead cell layer on the surface of the skin becomes thin and microscopic holes appear, meaning you lose protection,’ says dermatologist Dr Howard Murad. The stress hormone cortisol also increases oil production, which can cause pesky spots. Rescue it with: Murad Blemish Spot Treatment, £15 (04). Packed with sulphur, it zaps spots while the zinc soothes and softens. AHAs and BHAs rid your complexion 0 4 of dead skin cells and speed up cell turnover.

My Hair Is Stressed Scarves are giving us hair grief. Yep, that’s right, we may love a cosy knitted scarf and hat, but our hair really doesn’t.

winter’s worst enemy

the material from our protective outerwear causes static, which weakens locks and leaves them prone to breakage. Protect it with: Nexxus Nutritive Restoring Masque, £27. enriched with a caviar complex and elastin proteins, it acts like a coat of armour for your hair, deeply rehydrating it, by binding moisture within and reinforcing its strength.

rescue overcoloureD enDs

Constant dye puts your hair under stress, leaving it weak and worn out, so try to colour your locks in a gentler way. Protect it with: Bumble & Bumble’s Color Sticks, £23. these clever crayons conceal your roots without damage. they blend in with the texture of your hair rather than just sitting on top. and the colour lasts until your next wash.

fit chicks tune in!

If your new year health kick involves sweaty spinning classes or bikram yoga, you’ll need to wash your hair quite often, in which case it’s a good idea to rethink your shampoo. Protect it with: L’Oréal Elvive Colour Protect Low Shampoo, £6.99. It’s sulphate-free and creates zero foam, making it ideal for weakened hair. the cream cushions strands as it cleanses, creating minimal friction and breakage.

stop losing hair

research has found that in winter we shed a whopping 10 per cent of our hair. stop tangles in their tracks and let your hairbrush run free through wet, vulnerable strands with this clever new product. Protect it with: Toni & Guy Smooth Definition Mask, £6.49. It contains conditioning agents that surround the hair fibres and act like mini flood defences to hold water around each strand. the water then cushions each hair, forcing them apart, protecting them from friction and preventing knots when you rinse. genius!

hairstyles ruining your hair

‘extensions and weaves can be a big stress factor for hair,’ reveals stylist neil Moodie. ‘everyday usage often leaves your roots broken and brittle, which sometimes causes traction alopecia. super-tight ponytails and braids can also traumatise the follicle.’ Protect it with: supplement your diet with Viviscal, £51.95, to encourage hair growth, as well as taking your hair on a bootcamp-like break, free from braids and extensions. weekly scalp massages will also stimulate growth. also try Windle And Moodie Essential Oils Elixir, £29.

the higher the thread count in your cotton pillowcases, the more fibres are packed into the fabric’s construction, making it stiff and thick. this is bad news for your hair, as tossing and turning causes major friction. Invest in a silk pillowcase and pamper your hair with a treatment oil or cream once a week. Protect it with: Percy & Reed’s Wonder Treatment Oil, £25, to rebuild hair structure. It contains a talented trio of oils – camellia seed oil, macadamia seed oil and carrot seed oil – that penetrate the scalp and hair to reinforce bounce and strength.

There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep: here are five ways to maximise your 40 winks.

bolster your beD linen

Don’t go to bed without a pre-sleep spritz of This Works Sleep Plus Pillow Spray, £25 (01). the subtle scent induces a sense of calm so you can head to the land of nod. If you do happen to wake, the micro-encapsulated aromatherapy molecules are motion-activated, so tossing and turning in bed will spark fresh waves of soothing scent into the room, helping you to drift back off. when tested on 200 weary souls, 89 per cent of users said they woke less in the night and 97 per cent felt chirpier in the morning.

a p p ly a b o D y c r e a m

taking the time to massage in a rich body cream melts away tension like nothing else. we love Temple Spa Duvet Body Cream, £33 (02). Its gorgeous, skin-hugging texture treats your skin while soothing an addled mind. brimming with frankincense and lavender, it will prolong your body’s powering-down mode, helping you to fall into a deep slumber.

light a canDle

a beautiful candle is the perfect choice for calming bedtime air. Jo Malone London Lavender & Lovage Home Candle, £39 (03), is instantly sedative and hypnotic. Light pre-bedtime so that the scent has time to fill your room with its soothing aroma (just make sure you put it out before you go to sleep).

turn Down the t h e r m o s tat

we get that it’s freezing outside, but whacking up the central heating only contributes to a restless night’s sleep. ‘It can also affect the quality of your reM sleep,’ says Dr anna persaud, Ceo at this works. the solution? ‘Make sure your room is around 16-18 degrees, as this helps facilitate a decrease in core body temperature and in turn spurs sleepiness.’

D o n ’ t h av e a h o t b at h before beD

yep, mind-blowing, we know! but having a hot yet relaxing bath or shower straight before bedtime raises your internal temperature and you’ll actually find it harder to drift off. so make sure you have a bath a few hours ahead to give your body a chance to cool down and add Lola’s Apothecary Sweet Lullaby Bath Oil, £34 (04), to reinforce the relaxation factor. packed with lavender, ylang ylang, patchouli and vanilla oil, it’s extraordinarily concentrated so a little goes a long way.

Stop contouring with bronzer we know it’s tempting, but bronzers actually have orange undertones and are not meant for chiselling your cheeks. So put the terracotta colours down and opt for a shade that mimics more of a shadow. We love Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Disobey, £22

Master the feline flick It sounds odd but creating the purrfect cat eye calls for dental floss. Simply coat it with a nude lip liner and hold it taut from your lower lash line to the outer corner of your eyes. Then trace the subtle print with black liner. Genius. Look for Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, £16

LOOK’S LIFE INSPO

Live The Scandi Way Swedish fitspo and blogger Faya Nilsson, AKA @fitnessontoast, swears by three rules she says are the secret to sustainable healthy living

Eat Well

‘In Sweden, we enjoy thousands of miles of coastline, so fresh fish is in abundance. Given how lean a source of protein that is, it forms a large part of our diet. It’s naturally rich in healthy fats.’

Yes, we’d quite like this glow too, please

F aya ’ s Food diary

Enjoy Life

WORDS: LUCY GORNALL PhOtOS: ShUtteRStOCk

Train Smart

‘As kids, we played outdoors and led a simple, active existence; everyone plays sports regularly and that runs right through to adulthood. I pursue a variety of exercise: a yoga class each week, three or four weights sessions and a cardio session, plus regular stretching. I’m not aiming for ‘shredded abs’ but rather a healthy heart, a strong body and a sustainable mindset. I’m a big fan of mindfulness and deep breathing too. I’m not advocating hours of soul searching – that’s impractical. Just be aware of when you’re failing to breathe properly, when you’re slouched on your office chair, when you’re tense. Notice sounds and smells around you.’ @lookmagazine

lookmag

‘If we don’t enjoy our favourite foods, we can’t stay on track. I love chocolate and cake and I have some almost every day, otherwise I quickly fall off the bandwagon. A healthy lifestyle means enjoying sustainable balance; that was a key part of my upbringing. Understand what you’re putting into yourself, but there’s no reason to demonise things you love.’

BREAKFAST: Über-muesli; full of nuts, seeds and healthy grains. LUNCH: Salmon salad with quinoa, spinach and lentils. DINNER: homemade coconut, cardamom and lentil soup. SNACKS: An apple or almonds.

minute s to. . . Be at Blue monday We asked Jo Usmar, author of This Book Will Make You Fearless, for her top tips on how to drastically improve your mood – today!

1

Give yourself a worry budget Give yourself a ‘budget’ of 10 worries a day. Rationing your worries will make you realise that fretting doesn’t make you feel better or solve anything –taking action does.

WORDS: GISELLE WAINWRIGHT PHOTO: CAMERA PRESS/FIGAROPHOTO/NAOMI YANG

2

Say ‘I don’t’ instead of ‘I can’t’ ‘I can’t’ suggests a limitation, whereas ‘I don’t’ suggests a choice. Saying ‘I don’t have arguments’ is much stronger than ‘I can’t deal with arguments.’ Do something you’ll be rubbish at If there’s a talent you’re sure you don’t have, then try it. Terrified of spinning? Sign up for a class. Can’t carry a tune? Join a choir. Force yourself to face your limitations and you’ll be surprised at the positive effect it can have. You won’t be great at everything, but

If blue doesn’t suit you, we’ve got you covered

remember and accept that fact. Because how else would you grow?

4

Use the epitaph strategy Think about what your epitaph would say if it was written today. Would it say ‘Lucy spent lots of time trying to be a size 10’ or ‘Lucy was fun, caring and loyal’? Think about who you would rather know and focus on being that person.

5

Re-think failure Every time you get rejected, you’ve found one thing that didn’t work. Think of it as practice.

6

Remove ‘risk’ from your dictionary Risk suggests danger, which means you automatically don’t want to do it. Remove risk and use ‘chance’ or ‘opportunity’ to think positively.

Neil Patrick Harris is unrecognisable as Count Olaf

A Series Of Unfortunate Events Neil Patrick Harris plays vile Count Olaf in the Netflix adaptation of the hit book series. We caught up with him to find out what it was like… Neil, what separates this version from the 2004 movie? We were allowed the freedom of more time and each book is given two episodes. We have a two-hour movie per book. there are some really great scenes that you’ll appreciate. Were you a fan of the original Lemony Snicket series? i’ve become one. i hadn’t read them before. the show is in some ways funnier than the books. Is it liberating to play a bad character for the first time? it’s fun because i look nothing like myself. i could be as awful as i could possibly be. olaf is just horrible. it freed me up to be awful x 10. You look completely different in the

FASHION NeWS

show. How was the process? two hours of prosthetics every day. Usually you show up and focus on the scene straight away, but the make-up took so much time it became a meditation moment. it got challenging throughout the day as sweat happened and you have lots of people poking at your face all day. i used the annoyance of the process to help with the character. Were your kids terrified when they saw you in make-up? no, they weren’t. i’m a big fan of them having knowledge of the process. i made time lapse videos for them in the make-up room. it meant when i was Facetiming them they weren’t too freaked out. Is the show still funny even though it’s dark? definitely. i never approached this as a kids’ show at all. n Out now on Netflix

...& One More Thing

Fashion’s New Law Burberry has a long list of Brit girls who’ve acted as their muses over the years. The latest face to front the brand's campaign is only 16 years old, but she's far from your average teenager…

Speaking Of New Laws… Fashion just brought back the Juicy Couture tracksuit. no, you haven’t been transported back to a time when paris Hilton was the pinnacle of style and everyone was still waiting to see what happens to marissa in the oC – this is 2017, folks! since its peak back in the mid-noughties (as seen on J-lo, Beyoncé and kim k a lot) the JC phenomenon remained pretty dormant. until, that is, Vetements included a red velour number in its show last year, meaning Juicy had actually reached couture. now, topshop has teamed up with the brand to produce a capsule collection of two pieces that would make 2006’s lindsay lohan green with envy. wear them to the gym, wear them on the sofa. Just please, for the love of J-lo, don’t wear them with uggs.

A

new Burberry campaign is always exciting. From the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne to Sienna Miller and Naomi Campbell, some of the world’s most famous faces have graced billboards around the world on behalf of the British label. For the brand new Liquid Lip Velvet campaign, however, Christopher Bailey and co have opted for a new model on the verge of stardom. The daughter of Jude Law and Sadie Frost, 16-year-old Iris Law is the second of her siblings to land a modelling deal, following in the footsteps of older brother Rafferty. We caught up with Iris to find out all about her new job... Hi Iris! What do you like the most about the lipsticks? ‘I used to refrain from using Iris, pictured with her godmother Kate Moss, has lip colours been in the presence of as I struggled to fashion royalty since birth get a neat finish.

They’d often end up looking smudged. But the Liquid Lip Velvet lipsticks are so easy to use, they’ve made me love using lip colours.’ We heard Wendy Rowe was the make-up artist on set. Did she show you any tricks? ‘Wendy did a fresh dewy skin, simple eye and a strong red lip. This look is timeless and reminded me of all the old pictures of my mum when she was in her twenties – so iconic!’ Any tips on how to apply Liquid Lip Velvet? ‘I apply it to the Burberry middle of my liquid lip bottom lip and Velvet, £26 use my finger to move the tint across my lips so that the coverage is light.
