AUSTRALIAN EARTHMOVING
Wayne's Word The first edition for the year is always an exciting one to put together. I am enormously enthused about this magazine and the year ahead. Largely, this has been sparked by your constant support and shared passion for each edition as well as the industry. Recently I had the privilege of spending a morning with Peter Geelan of Shore Hire, one of the most inspiring and magnetic characters of our industry. Peter has earnt his legendary status not solely due to his successful career achievements however because of his winning personality and courageous outlook both on life and work. We are thrilled to kick the year off with a bang by sharing his story. Peter’s story compelled me to get adventurous and so for the very first time in the magazines history we did not feature a machine on the front cover, instead an industry legend. Whilst new machines and attachments are essential, without key figures such as Peter the Australian Earthmoving Industry would certainly not be as magic.
They are key to making your jobs seamless by providing their innovative equipment. There is every indication that we are about to experience one of the busiest years in decades. I hope that you have a solid business plan together, your machinery is well maintained and that your fleet is up to date so that you can take advantage of the countless opportunities awaiting. We can’t wait to share the ride with you and continue delivering the latest and greatest products, providing you with a wealth of information shared by our feature writers to ensure your business is a success. We are proud media partners and exhibitors at this years Diesel, Dirt & Turf Expo being held on the 13th, 14th and 15th April in Penrith NSW so come and say hi to us and tell your story at stand #1, the very first stand as you enter the indoor pavilion. Happy digging!
Don’t freak out though, we have still packaged together the hottest products on the market today and you can read all about them in What’s Hot beginning on page 80. Returning this year are also all the reader favourite articles to keep you abreast of the latest tips to progress your business forward. The strength of this magazine relies on three key components. Firstly, the incredible team of feature writers who are authorities in their own fields working tirelessly to share their knowledge with you in each edition. Then of course you the reader, as without you interacting with us through your letters, following us on instagram, Facebook or downloading the app to read the digital edition, the exercise of putting it all together would be pointless. The third major component is the manufacturers, dealerships and advertisers who support the magazine as they are the heart and soul of our industry.

AUSTRALIAN EARTHMOVING
IT'S A
SHORE THING We recently had the privilege of meeting one of the most fascinating and humble gentleman of the earthmoving industry. We are referring to the one and only Peter Geelan of Shore Hire which is just one of his many career achievements to date. We couldn’t be more thrilled to share his story with you. Peter’s working life started at the incredibly young age of thirteen when he left school to work as a jackaroo. It’s hard to fathom a thirteen-year-old these days joining the workforce and Pete himself can’t imagine his grandchildren who are fast approaching that age leaving school anytime soon. For some people though, tackling the world can’t come quick enough and Peter is just such a person. Peter worked on properties until he was seventeen. His parents separated when he was very young and whilst on a visit to his mother in Sydney he went to a dance. In those days a young seventeen -year-old cowboy had quite a bit of testosterone and he was taken by the good-looking girls, so he ended up staying in Sydney. With a poor education however, work in the big smoke was impossible, so he enrolled himself into night school which he attended for four years, followed by a diploma in accountancy for two years. Although he wasn't particularly skilled in anything of value in Sydney, Peter was extremely ambitious and secured a position in sales where he gained experience in several retail stores. This included a company called Sawmaster that sold all sorts of woodworking equipment to builders and joinery shops. In 1966 he started working for a company called Davleco who manufactured rollers. In those days it was only small rollers that were self propelled. The large rollers 52”, 62” and 72” were towed by tractors or track machines. Davleco also made troweling machines, concrete vibrators, hoist towers and they were

reading overseas publications they were introduced to steel shoring. Excavators were increasing in size and quickly advancing. Eventually he secured a joint manufacturing license agreement with a English company called Jayville, catapulting them into the world of manufacturing shoring. They experienced such success that Shorco expanded to eight branches around Australia. In 1998 Coates made an unbelievable offer and Shorco was sold to Coates enforcing a five-year lockout. In the years that followed their good friends, the Booth family owned a very small hire company Booths Hire. After experiencing two deaths in the family Peters son Luke went in to help the family friend with their business. Eventually Luke and Alan Bird bought the business and when Peter’s lockout expired he became involved. The business’s success grew from one branch to five. Low and behold Coates came along and bought it from them imposing another five-year lockout. Due to their prosperous history in the hire business they decided that there was a niche in the market for their experience. They designed a new company Shore Hire starting out with one branch. The business has steadily grown specialising in shoring, traffic control equipment, propping, test plugs and a whole range of different equipment. They have also expanded their geographical reach located in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and they are just about to open their newest branch in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Different to their competition, Shore Hire today has fourteen members of their technical sales team offering on-site support Australia wide. Despite not conforming to industry standard, Peter’s sales background gave meaning to the proactive approach as opposed to waiting for the phone to ring. Another differentiating point to their competitors is that they manufacture everything they hire. They continue to develop and improve their products directly working closely with their customers to ensure the product is delivering the best possible result. Sharing ideas and maintaining strong relationships with overseas companies to maintain their position at the front of the game. They make a point of visiting America and Europe as well as the larger tradeshows such as ConExpo in America, Bauma in Germany atleast once per year and showcase themselves at Diesel, Dirt & Turf here in Australia. Marketing the business has always been important and Peter has been attending trade shows right back to the very first field days that were held at North Narrabeen Lake on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Over the years they have attended trade shows all over the country. Marketing

Luke is the future of the business and whilst Peter works exceptionally hard his focus has shifted to his cattle farm down the south coast of New South Wales where he enjoys being behind the controls of machines himself. Here he has a Kenworth truck, a 20 tonne Caterpillar excavator, a Komatsu backhoe, four tractors and he just loves his gear. Peter would like to expand and spend more time with his farming operations and is currently breeding Speckle Park cattle which are a Canadian breed. He currently runs between 150 and 200 head of cattle. Looking to the future of the business Peter will always continue to grow the business, develop new products and stay ahead of

Shore Hire has unlimited potential in all areas of the product range from propping, to traffic, to shoring. They will also continue to grow their property portfolio that they use within the business including office blocks and factories. Peter's phenomenal success can only be attributed to his hard work as well as sheer determination and desire to succeed. One of his main secrets to success is that he genuinely enjoys work and the people he works with. The team at Shore Hire are all good mates with a shared passion for the business, contributing their own ideas to make improvements to drive the business forward. The office is unlike a lot of other workplaces, featuring a dedicated gym with the latest equipment and is just one of the small perks of working for Shore Hire. Through providing a good work environment they have been able to build a fantastic team with some of the brightest and forwardthinking staff in the industry. Despite all of his successes, triumphs and tribulations Peter is one of the most genuine, down to earth gentleman we have met. It would be easy to spend days with him listening to his stories and being captivated by his magnetic personality. To have been invited into the home of such an incredibly intelligent and savvy business man that we know as a true legend of the Australian Earthmoving industry was an absolute treat. He has a general rule which dictates that anything from 8 tonne up will always be a Case machine however due to Kubota’s support of his business from day one, he will always maintain a relationship. The backup service for a machine in his business is crucial. The ability to ring the dealer with an issue and have it fixed straightaway is fundamental. It would be a novice move to expect smooth sailing every day when you have machinery working in volatile conditions. Whilst Troy will continue to use both Kubota and Case machines, there has not been a dealership that comes close to the backup support and service from EEA. Troy purchased his first Case two years ago to replace a Kobelco excavator. He was without a reason to go to Case however the service from EEA along with their attitude was faultless. Subsequently following that first Case excavator two years ago Troy has recently bought a Case tracked skid steer loader. customers, communicating throughout the job. It is extremely important to appreciate your clients and if you respect their requests, then they are going to have a lot of respect for you in return. When reputation is everything, Troy's advice for new operators is to align themselves with good contractors that already have a strong reputation for high quality work. It is important to help those contractors out in any way you can. Planning to buy a machine and trying to go for it by yourself is simply not going to work. It is instrumental to align yourself with bigger operators who already have a few machines. Once the doors start opening, you just need to secure a few good customers and you will be away on your own journey. Honesty and integrity are equally as important when it comes to building clients and contractors trust. You should always think of tomorrow as a lot of people only think of today, “biting the hand that feeds them” and finding themselves unable to get work down the line. Troy is clearly following his own advice as they have never been busier. Currently they have several active jobs in Sydney's eastern suburbs, Sydney Metro and there is always something happening on the northern beaches. The waterfront properties are extremely difficult wok sites and every day a new challenge presents. Simply navigating the trucks down tiny streets or problem-solving solutions to position machines onto a jobsite situated on the side of a cliff are constant encounters. Every day the situation changes however this is the very reason that Troy and his team enjoy the niche line of work that they have carved out. Whilst Troy’s business has steadily grown over time he can't pinpoint any exact pivotal moments. Troy believes that if every day he maintains focus and continues to work hard than the day before then he should expect to

New South Wales October saw the release of several important documents that will influence the future construction landscape of New South Wales. Firstly, the Greater Sydney Region Plan for 2017 was handed down by the Greater Sydney Commission. The ambitious plan outlines Greater Sydney in 2056 as a “metropolis of three cities”. The first is the eastern harbour city, which describes the main Sydney CBD we know today. The second is the ‘central river city’, which aims to make Parramatta the centre of the Sydney Metropolitan. The third is the ‘Western Parkland’ city, which will centre on the site of the Badgerys Creek Airport. Perhaps most ambitiously, the plan outlines a ’30 minute city’, in which all homes will be located within a 30 minute commute of a metropolitan centre. Concurrently, the NSW government had released its Future Transport Strategy to 2056. The plan emphasises the delivery of metropolitan transport services such as the Sydney Metro North West, Sydney Metro City and Southwest and light rail for the city and Parramatta. It also emphasised future projects that will create greater connectivity in regional NSW, such as new regional train meets and innovation of regional freight networks. In the physical building space, the move away from residential is becoming more pronounced in NSW. Major construction events over October
centred around commercial and mixed use precincts. Newcastle’s most iconic building the former Newcastle Post Office building, has been offered for sale by expressions of interest. The building can be re-purposed due to the site’s flexible B4 Mixed-Use zoning. B4 mixed use allows for residential, hospitality, retail and commercial builds. Coombes Property Group and Drivas Property Group will develop a $227.6 million, A-grade office and retail tower in Parramatta. The project, designed by Crone Architects, is targeted for a 5.5 Green Star rating and a 5 Star NABERS energy rating. HPG Australia has announced its building design team for their One Sydney Park, mixed use development in Alexandria: MHN Design Union and Silvester Fuller. Sue Barnsley has been awarded landscape design, and Make Architects won interiors. The site currently houses a warehouse. It was acquired from Goodman Group in 2015. Grimshaw Architects has been appointed for the Stage 2 detailed design of Poly Australia’s benchmark, mixed-use tower in George St in the Sydney CBD. Poly purchased the site from Anton Capital last year. The development will be the first commercial development in Australia for Poly.
Australian Capital Territory The historic West Block buildings in front of new Parliament House will be restored and re purposed by Geocon for a luxury Abode hotel. The hotel will be designed by Fender Katsalidis, following acquisition of the site from the Commonwealth. Geocon will also redevelop a one hectare site of the Woden Tradies Club. The project is called ‘WOVA’ or Woden Revamped, and will comprise four buildings. The buildings include a 24-storey tower, delivering 800 apartments, contemporary workspaces, and public and private amenities.
WOVA will also be designed by Fender Katsalidis, as well as Oculus Urban Design. Following an announcement by the ACT Education Directorate, five buildings at Campbell Primary school and Narrabundah College will be demolished due to asbestos contamination. The contamination means the buildings cannot be safely upgraded. Instead, new facilities will be built, and students will be accommodated in demountable buildings set up on ovals.

Victoria Newmark Capital Limited have submitted a town planning application for the upgrade of Chapel Street’s Jam Factory. The developers are working with Bates Design, and UK based Leonard Design Architects. If approved, demolition and building works will be carried out for 50,000 sqm of shops, food and drink premises, a cinema and office spaces. The 159 year old façade and internal chimney will be preserved, with a tiered extension of 4–15 storeys to be built on top. O’Herns Road in Epping is expected to see major upgrades very shortly. The $81 million Stage 1 road works contract has been awarded to Maca Civil Pty Ltd. This stage will include the intersection of O’Herns Road and High Street. The works are intended to improve traffic flow in the northern suburbs, and will create more than 40 local jobs. The current roundabout will be replaced with new traffic lights, linking to the Epping Fire Station. This will allow Fire Fighters to get on the road efficiently during an emergency. Stage 2 is expected to see upgraded access to the Hume Freeway and a direct route to the
Melbourne CBD. Finally, O’Herns Road will be duplicated to four lanes between the Hume Freeway and Redding Rise. This will support access to the new interchange. Geelong racing will receive a sand training track refurbishment. This will provide trainers with a quality track, which includes the installation of an automatic irrigation system, improved drainage and a consistent surface. A new desalination system will enable safe irrigation of the racecourse by treating the venue’s salty bore water. This will be made possible through $435,000 in funding from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. The Parkhouse development in Abbotsford is set to commence in October with Icon Construction Australia. The site, located at 619627 Victoria Street, will see the construction of two buildings, consisting of 10 and 11 storeys respectively. Across the buildings will be 539 apartments, and 788 sqm of retail premises. Further amenities will include a private pool, a gym, a golf simulation station and many other facilities.

WHY CLIENTS\ DON’T PAY AUTHOR: ANTHONY IGRA
Why do so many contractors suffer nonpayment episodes frequently and must struggle to get what’s owed to them? To a great degree it is a cultural problem that developed over many decades. Until the implementation of the Security of Payment Act, contractors had virtually no leverage, or bargaining power with which to extract payments from head contractors or principals. The cost and time required for legal action made it virtually impossible, and the industry used this to its advantage leaving contractors broke or struggling with lack of cash-flow. Simply put, you could get away with not paying. Realise this: The decision not to pay you is made at the very first interaction. There your client is already deciding whether or not you are going to get paid. Remember, a client will withhold payment from a contractor whom he fears the least. Now go back and read that sentence again so it sinks in.
The causes of non-payment mostly lie with you, the contractor. This is good news. It means that the remedy is also up to you. You can control many of these causes, and reduce or eliminate them. There are 3 key reasons why contractors do not get paid. Each one could be expanded on at length but here’s the guts of it. 1. Unable to prove anything in relation to your work 2. Your client knows the contract better than you do 3. Unable to counter unjustified defects and back-charges Let’s take a closer look. Unable to prove anything in relation to your work, clients will notice that you don’t write anything down. What about site meetings? Do you take notes? Do you get finicky about
49
DEBT RECOVERY
paperwork, contracts, variation approvals, changes to scope? Do you keep as site diary? All these documents become ‘contemporaneous evidence’ and can act to prove what was agreed to, and the related terms, price, and scope. Sadly most contractors do not write things down, and do not keep good records. Most contractors hate paperwork because it is seen as bureaucratic red tape. This is not the case. Paperwork is bloody fantastic. Nothing stops non-payment in its tracks faster, harder, and more ruthlessly than well kept crystal clear paperwork. Your client knows the contract better than you do. The strategy used by non-payers is generally the same; they will keep you working even though you may be in breach of the contract in some areas. These are often on minor administrative points on which the client places no importance throughout the project. However when it comes to payment time the client refuses to pay, raising a series of alleged contractual breaches that had never been mentioned or raised before. This happens because the contractor has not read and understood the contract. Contracts are not written in some mysterious language known only to a chosen few. They are written in English. Read them. Too many contractors just check that the price on the contract matches the quote. That is a perfect way to set yourself up for non-payment. Unable to counter unjustified defects and back-
charges Most contractors do not record the quality of the work as it progresses. This leaves the door open for clients to make allegations of defective work at the very end. By then the area may have been built out or the job completed. This makes it impossible for the contractor to have an independent inspection done while the work is in progress. Often the contractor will offer to return to inspect and fix any defects so that payment will be made. But of course the client will do the standard thing and get someone else to do the work for three times the price and then try to back-charge the contractor for the inflated amount. If you can’t record and document all quality issues of your work in progress then that creates a non-payment opportunity. These 3 reasons explain why so many contractors do not get paid. Have a close look at your operation and address those areas immediately. For a plan of action, simply reverse each reason. 1. Document everything so you can prove anything in relation to your work 2. Know the contract better than your client does 3. Conduct regular ‘in progress’ inspections to counter unjustified allegations of defects and back-charges Now go get your house in order for this month’s progress claim!

For Business Communication Welcome to 2018. That came around fast, didn’t it?
By now, most of us have already made – and broken – our New Year’s Resolutions. But instead of feeling guilty about that gym membership you’ve already stopped using, spend some time making some business resolutions you can actually keep. The clean slate of a new year is a great time to set some simple communications goals. Here are a few ideas:
is a great way to start your year and revitalise your team. If you discover that the way you present your brand no longer matches with what you’re trying to achieve – then of course you’re next step is to change things. If your messages and branding all still apply, then you’re all set to go.
Resolution 1: Review your brand and your messages
The company website is very often the first stop for potential customers or new staff. But this highly public representation of your brand is also very prone to neglect. Getting a website up and running is a big task so it’s easy to get to the end of the process and think, ‘well, that’s that job done!’ But a website is not a set and forget communications tool. It needs regular revision and updating. When was the last time yours got any TLC?
Resolution 2: Update your website
Set aside some time to revisit the way you present yourself in the market place. What does your public profile tell potential customers and employees about your business? Ask your team - do we all tell people the same thing when they ask about our company? - do we all agree on what it is that makes our company valuable to our customers? - do we have a shared view of our company culture, goals and directions? Regrouping on what your brand stands for and how it should be communicated in the market
Ideally, you should be updating your website pretty often, with new content and new images and ongoing checks for broken links or outdated details. In reality, this is often not achievable, but you should at the very least do a quick sweep at the beginning of the year to
53
MARKETING
check the contact information is still current and there’s no glaringly incorrect information. If you include testimonials or media releases on your site, keep them at least close to up to date. If someone clicks on your newsroom and your latest media release is from 2009, that’s really not a great look.
If you need help, ask for it.
Resolution 3: Keep up with industry news
But you can make 2018 the year to introduce one new communications tool.
If you want to be a leader in your field, you need to know what’s actually happening in your field! You can’t stay ahead of the pack if you have no idea what the pack is up to. Staying in touch with what’s happening in your industry will let you know who the up and comers are, as well as providing you with some insight into new projects and government policies that could have impacts for your business. You don’t need to devote hours and hours to this task, but make sure you’re at least catching the main themes in the media for your industry, and keeping up with popular forums and websites. If you’re a member of an industry association, read the publications they produce and think about attending some professional events. You just might get some new ideas! If you’re really keen, you can also look for opportunities to be the news. Your new product, customer win or project could be a great story in 2018. Resolution 4: Jump on the digital bandwagon The online space is ever changing and fast moving. If you’re not there at all, it’s time to get there. If you’re already there, you can be sure there’s something new you haven’t got on board with yet. The internet is no longer the domain of the young and tech savvy. Everybody uses it, and everyone is relying on it more and more. You have to be there, simple as that. Once you’ve given your web presence a buff and polish, look at your Facebook page, your Linked In page and your Twitter account. Think about creating or adding to your YouTube channel.
Resolution 5: Plan something new You can’t implement all your great communications idea at once. No one has the time, energy or budget for that.
If you have a big team, maybe your new ‘thing’ will be about internal communications – a monthly email newsletter to staff sharing company news or tips; or a regular call schedule to gather testimonial leads from your team; or plans for communications training for your key staff. Or maybe it’s something for your customers. Add a little tip or bit of trivia to your invoices. Create a new flyer or brochure. Make a funny bumper sticker. Run a Facebook competition. Choose something huge, something small or something in between – as long as it’s new. Follow through Whatever resolutions you set, make sure they have measurable goals. The secret to keeping a resolution is to be very specific. For example: don’t promise to update your website ‘some time’ – instead, commit to reviewing your contacts and adding three photos by a set deadline. And remember that you don’t need to personally execute every resolution. You can’t send someone else to the gym on your behalf but when you make resolutions for your business, there is plenty of opportunity to delegate or outsource. Keeping your communications fresh, up to date and engaging should be an ongoing commitment for your business, whether you’re a multi-branch company with a huge communications budget or an owner-operator with a few key clients. The communications you engage in will differ but your approach should be the same, so use the start of the new year as an excuse to set some goals and give your communications a good shake up.

BLOCK CHAIN THE BITCOIN OF CONSTRUCTION
T
he world is asking about something called “Blockchain” thanks to a highly speculative investment called Bitcoin. I’d like to say I invested in Bitcoin, but unfortunately I feel the best investment in Blockchain will be in business, so I’m waiting. After seeing Bitcoins meteoric rise, more fool me. “The technology likely to have the greatest impact on the next few decades has arrived. And it’s not social media. It’s not big data. It’s not robotics. It’s not even AI. You’ll be surprised to learn that it’s the underlying technology of digital currencies like Bitcoin. It’s called the blockchain.” — Don Tapscott There is no doubt that blockchain is the future; it has the potential to transform everything from how we send and receive money to how communities grow and how we interact in business. Everybody seems to have fallen in love with it, but I often wonder how many people actually know what it is, given it has the potential to change the world. It’s a technology that remains an elusive concept, but it shouldn’t be, the concept is simple once you get your head around the architecture and theory of basic crypto economics.
57
MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
Blockchain is still a relatively new concept in the world and has found its feet in electronic finance. Bitcoin was the first use of Blockchain for the masses providing a peerto-peer electronic cash system, also known as "cryptocurrency", which basically allows people to make instant, anonymous transactions online. In simple terms there is no Bitcoin without Blockchain. Bitcoin records every single transaction made on its network in a public record. This is managed using a "blockchain" and this underlying technology provides a new highly secure, exceptionally designed peer to peer contract mechanism, that will change the construction industry, but I’ll get to that later. There are three key reasons why I think our industry need to know more about Blockchain: 1. Blockchain can be a crucial building block to reduce compliance costs across a multitude of industries.
2. Blockchain technology is much broader than finance. It can be applied to any transaction where traceability and visibility is required. Supply chain is a notable use case where Blockchain can be leveraged to manage and sign contracts and audit product provenance. 3. Blockchain growth will come from the convergence of public and private Blockchains to an ecosystem where firms, customers and suppliers can collaborate in a secure, auditable and virtual way. At its core, Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger or decentralized database that keeps records of digital transactions. Rather than having a central administrator like a traditional database, (think banks, governments & accountants), a distributed ledger has a network of replicated databases, synchronized via the internet and visible to anyone within the network.Blockchain networks can be private

with restricted membership similar to an intranet, or public, like the Internet, accessible to any person in the world.
chain management requirements the Civil and Construction Industry will see massive efficiency and improvement through Blockchain.
“A blockchain is a magic computer that anyone can upload programs to and leave the programs to self-execute, where the current and all previous states of every program are always publicly visible, and which carries a very strong crypto economically secured guarantee that programs running on the chain will continue to execute in exactly the way that the blockchain protocol specifies.” — Vitalik Buterin
As an industry with so much money at stake and so many complicated moving parts, the construction industry suffers from disputes and litigation. Many times, things like payment terms, confidentiality, and other important stuff are outlined in a contract. But disputes often arise over the stipulations of the contract. To avoid that, blockchain technology could be used to produce things called “smart contracts.”
Blockchain’s decentralised, open and cryptographic nature allow people to trust each other and transact peer to peer, making the need for intermediaries obsolete. This also brings unprecedented security benefits.
Smart contracts would have instructions embedded in a transaction so that unless the instructions are fulfilled, there is no payment. This ensures all parties are happy and that no one is having to chase people for payment, virtually eliminating disputes.
This is a highly disruptive technology that promises to change the world as we know it. The technology is not only shifting the way we use the Internet, but it is also revolutionising the global economy. By enabling the digitisation of assets, blockchain is driving a fundamental shift from the Internet of Information, where we can instantly view, exchange and communicate information to the Internet of Value, where we can instantly exchange assets. Blockchain has applications that go way beyond obvious things like digital currencies and money transfers. From electronic voting, smart contracts & digitally recorded property assets to patient health records management and proof of ownership for digital content.
Construction projects are complex beasts with lots of things going on and lots of parties involved. Ideally, the blockchain could help avoid contract disputes by allowing parties the ability to create contracts that force the participants to move through a certain checklist before being paid, giving greater control over the payment process so everyone is on the same page. At this point, you might be thinking that this doesn't sound like it's going to change the much at all. It's just a way to verify the ownership of something digital, even if there are identical copies… right? If you think about that sentence for long enough, it will already begin to dawn on you how big of a deal that is. Up until now, a copy of something digital was indistinguishable from another. If an mp3 could be used as currency, there would be no way to tell whose copy of "ACDC - Thunderstruck. mp3" was the real one that could be exchanged for goods and services, and which was a copy.
I strongly believe that Blockchain will profoundly disrupt hundreds of industries that rely on intermediaries, including banking, finance, academia, real estate, insurance, legal, health care and the public sector . The blockchain will enable an increased amount of people and businesses to trade much more frequently and efficiently, significantly boosting local and international trade.
Beyond disrupting the world of finance, the most mind-bending, earth-rocking uses of this technology actually have nothing to do with money specifically. I foresee that blockchainbased technologies will underpin a good chunk of the internet that you use in the next 10 to 15 years, but like today's internet, you shouldn't and wouldn't have to understand how a blockchain-enabled internet works – it just will.
The potential impacts of blockchain technology on society and the global economy are significant. With an ever growing list of realworld uses, blockchain technology promises to have a massive impact. Bitcoin is just the beginning. Many of the most exciting applications and platforms haven’t even been invented yet and I believe with the large contractual and significant supply

HIGH RISK
AUTHOR: LEE KIBEIKS
WORKING WITH EARTHMOVING MACHINERY TYRES CAN BE HIGH RISK. INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED DURING TYRE MAINTENANCE AND TYRE HANDLING ACTIVITIES. OPERATORS AND BYSTANDERS HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED FROM UNCONTROLLED MOVEMENT OR FORCEFUL EXPLOSION OF TYRES AND RIM ASSEMBLIES.
I
t is vital that persons involved in changing tyres know the risks and how an incident can occur. This article will provide information about the hazards and risks associated with changing earthmoving machinery tyres and provide some strategies to reduce those risks. A wheel assembly normally consists of a rim base, side or lock rings and an inflated tyre assembly. Multi-piece rim wheels consist of one or more rings supporting the tyre’s bead and serving as a flange or locking system to keep the inflated tyre on the rim. An inflated tyre can produce an enormous amount of pressure onto rims and rim components. To put this into perspective, a normal truck tyre can exert approximately 35 tonnes of force. The potential force or
pressure of a tyre can be calculated by estimating the size of the side-wall of the tyre (in square inches) and multiplying this by the tyre pressure. The pressure exerted by an inflated tyre can cause the wheel to become ejected with explosive force if any component is defective, damaged, incompatible or incorrectly assembled. The following incident brief describes how easily an inflated tyre can become a projectile. A worker was removing a tyre from a Log Stacker machine. The tyre was mounted on a multi-piece rim consisting of an outer and inner rim held together with a series of bolts. 16 bolts held the outer and inner rim together and 48 larger bolts attached the entire rim to the Stacker’s wheel hub. The worker began removing the larger bolts whilst the tyre was still
61

AUSTRALIAN EARTHMOVING
inflated (approximately 90psi). The remaining bolts had weakened over time and could not sustain the pressure created by the inflated tyre and removal of the bolts. The remaining bolts sheared off which caused the wheel to be blasted toward the worker who was facing the tyre. The worker was thrown with the tyre and fatally injured after being crushed between the projectile tyre and a service truck parked in the vicinity. During operation, heat produced by friction, or even direct sunlight can cause tyre decomposition releasing flammable vapours into the air mixture inside a tyre. This phenomenon can cause a fire or explosion within the tire. An example of the effects of a tire explosion can be seen in the following fatality briefing. A worker was conducting welding works to repair a cracked rim with the Earthmover truck tyre mounted, but deflated. After completing the weld, the worker inflated the tyre. The heat created by the welding caused some tyre decomposition, producing a flammable atmosphere inside the tyre. During inflation, the increase in air created a fire inside the tyre and it subsequently exploded. The explosion caused the tread to separate into four flaps, one of which fatally struck the worker who was positioned directly in front of the mounted tyre. Large earthmoving machinery tyres are heavy and difficult to maneuver. Tyre-handling devices have helped to reduce injuries associated with crushed hands / fingers and serious back injuries, however tyre handlers pose their own risks, as described in the following fatality report. A worker was using a vehicle mounted radiocontrolled tyre-handler (with grab attachment) to position a new tyre onto an Earthmover truck. The worker was experiencing difficulties in placing the tyre back onto the hub and attempted to use the tyre handler to place the tyre back onto the ground so it could be repositioned. The worker was standing between the tyre and the vehicle when he operated the tyre handler to angle the tyre approximately 30-45 degrees, which reduced the gap between the operator and the suspended tyre from 4m to 1m. The operator received fatal crushing injuries when he became caught between the vehicle and the suspended tyre.
Correct tyre pressure plays an important role in safe operation of earthmoving machinery, but it is also vital to know the recommended pressure before inflating a tyre. If a tyre or rim assembly is exposed to pressures that exceed its capacity, the tyre can explode under pressure, causing a sudden release of air sufficient to forcefully throw a worker. If the air blasts against a fixed structure, an unrestrained wheel can become a forceful projectile with the potential to cause injury or death to operators or bystanders. The following incident describes the effects of overinflating a tyre. A worker had installed a new tractor tyre onto a rim and was in the process of inflating the tyre. The tyre and rim where laying flat on the ground and the worker was positioned directly above it. The tyre bead would not seat on the rim correctly, so the worker kept inflating the tyre to force it to seat. The worker ended up over-inflating the tyre which caused it to burst over the rim flange and catapult the wheel and the worker into the air. The worker fell back down onto the concrete floor, sustaining severe injuries and the tyre continued upwards where it struck the shop canopy with force before falling back to the ground. These incidents provide an insight into how easily and quickly serious injury and fatalities can occur when conducting maintenance on earthmoving machinery tyres. To reduce the risk associated with these tasks, the employer, in consultation with relevant employees and qualified persons, should develop a comprehensive tyre safety program. The program should include, at least, the following elements: Tyre and Rim Register: • Written instructions for assembly and maintenance on all relevant tyres. • Instructions for compatible rims / wheels assemblies • Service history of rims (hours of use, dates when in use and which truck it was used on, any maintenance issues or damage) • Service history of tyres (hours of use, dates when in use and which truck it was used on, any maintenance issues or damage, repairs, re-lugs, re-tread or re-grooving) • Service history for machinery that tyre was fitted to. This is critical as tyres can become weakened or explode from overheating caused by electricity running through it (through contact with power-lines, or a lightning strike), heating of wheel studs, overheating of wheel

as required by AS 4457). Before conducting tyre maintenance, workers should conduct a visual inspection of the wheel assembly. Where required, ensure components are cleaned free of oil, grease and other debris that may affect inspection. Visually inspect rim. Check for damage, cracks or distortion. Ensure workers can identify and are familiar with the tyre/rim assembly (single, double tyre assemblies, multi-rims, cleatattached rims etc). Visually inspect lock ring. Check for corrosion, flat spots, or warping. Ensure there are no cracks, wear or corrosion on the bead seatband and flange where they are in contact with the lock ring, rim base or any weld. Ensure mounting holes on the wheel discs do not exhibit warping, or cracking around the circumference. If damage/defects are detected, determine the
extent of the damage. For example, AS4457 dictates that surface defects in the lock ring, O-ring, back flange area in excess of 5mm, required further testing and investigation (such as magnetic particle and/or ultrasonic testing). If the depth of damage of those components exceed 1.0mm it is classified as “defected” and repairs must be made before the component can be used. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for deflating and correct method for removal. For example, deflate all tyres to a maximum of 35kPa, and fully deflate multi-rim assemblies. Use suitable tyre-restraining equipment before deflating and undoing any wheel nuts. For dual tyres with cleats, both tyres will require restraint as they both release when cleats are undone. Do not drop tyres from trucks during unloading or leave tyres freestanding on their tread as

Skidsteer Or track Loader ? You can have both in one.
The quest for mobility and versatility has created many breakthroughs in our industry. Track over tyre systems aren’t a new fad and we’ve seen many iterations of tracks over tyres on a number of unique applications including military and farming. Let’s review were our industry sits today.
running on its usual pneumatic tyres, so it’s not a bad step up.
Making The Change. You can start by considering your answers to these two questions: is my job time-sensitive and what are the varying site conditions? By answering these questions, you can easily determine which machine is better for you but the first decision maybe do tracks or tyres work for you?
General Uses. For our industry we first saw the incarnation of the skidsteer around 40 years ago and it has risen to become the largest single selling piece of equipment in the construction industry. Considered an industry staple, the ever purposeful skidsteer loader is relied upon by virtually all contractors, from single owner operators to small and large fleets. But in recent years, it has faced some tough competition from the increasingly popular compact track loader (CTL). To minimise the expense to jump into a dedicated track loader many operators are looking to invest in Over-The-Tyre tracks (OTT’s) basically a track attachement. According to Camso, its OTT HXD all rubber coated system improves a skidsteer loader’s flotation by five times over the same machine
OTT tracks are compatible with a wide range of popular skid steer brand manufacturers including Bobcat, CAT, Case, John Deere, New Holland, Kubota, JCB, Mustang, Wacker Neuson and many more. They are easy to install and remove as needed, usually requiring less than an hour. Owners of tyre based skid steers all agree that they offer great versatility. Difficult terrains, such as mud, clay, loose rock, sand, snow require extra traction and flotation. Sometimes the challenge comes from sensitive working environments such as excavation sites or newly

laid asphalt and concrete. For such operations, over-the-tyre (OTT) tracks can be conveniently attached to give skid steers added traction and flotation without damaging the surface. OTT tracks are also useful for temporary operations because they can usually be removed in less than an hour, transforming the skid steer from a track, back to a tyre machine. Don’t part with your beloved skidsteer if you don’t need to. Equipment manufacturers acknowledge that skid-steer loaders (SSLs) are the lowest operating cost solution where approximately 85% of the operating cost, excluding the operator, comprises fuel and tyres. Skidsteers shine in applications where the ground conditions are firm and higher travel speed is required. An SSL normally weighs less than a track unit, allowing for more flexibility to transport. According to Caterpillar, an SSL also requires the lowest amount of maintenance to minimize the ownership and operating cost. The general consensus is that skid-steers work best on paved or hard surfaces, landscaped areas, or concrete, while the CTL excels in loose, wet, muddy, snowy, sloppy conditions and on slopes and uneven terrain. Where these conditions can be very challenging and tough
on skid-steer loaders, fitting an OTT kit will quickly assist a skidsteer to handle these types of conditions. All weather and all purpose ability. It Also becomes very frustrating waiting for a job site to dry out after a rain day. And hard to catch up on wasted productivity time. Bolting up a set of OTT’s will enable your skidsteer to better handle wet, soft, sensitive, or muddy conditions. Secondly they exert low ground pressure on a surface, so there’s less damage to pre-existing grounds, even after rain. This means you’ll have a longer and less difficult working day.
Maintenance Difference? The CTL (Compact Track Loader) has all the components of tracked undercarriage - drive motors, rollers, idlers, sprockets, etc. The OTT just has an added set of tracks. Rubber tracks normally have no real ongoing parts costs until they were out. However steel tracks normally wear grousers and bushings wear out. Generally there is more maintenance with a CTL machine. Note that most OTT track kits are only to be used in conjunction with air filled (pneumatic) tyres and debris (mainly rocks, bricks and concrete) can get caught between the OTT and

the rigid filled tyre this will destroy tyres and over tension tracks. So there is also the chance of damaged tyres along the journey. In contrast some OTT track users say the tracks actually protect skid steer tyres from punctures and damage. Rubber and steel over the tyre tracks. Depending on the type of ground surface and the working conditions of your site, you can choose between these two options (steel over the tyres tracks or rubber) as they each offer specific advantages on certain terrains. OTT tracks essentially give you a 2 for 1 deal as you can enjoy the benefits of your skid steer tyres when you want and can also add on OTT tracks for added versatility whenever the need arises. Also, you have to be careful with the surfaces (asphalt, concrete, etc) you cross with metal OTT's. A rubber coated OTT track can go where ever, although it may leave some rubber marks. Let’s take a quick look at how these two types of OTT tracks compare so that you can assess and choose the better option for your skid steer operations.

skid steer’s ROI.
OTT tracks are made from the toughest rubber compounds and are reinforced with premium steel cables to guarantee a longer service life. With rubber OTT tracks, you considerably increase your skid steer loader’s traction and flotation capabilities. The deep tread lugs and patterns give added traction while the wider footprint of the OTT track evens weight distribution of your equipment and decreases ground pressure, which, in turn, boosts flotation over muddy and sandy terrains.
• Protects Surfaces from Damage Using rubber OTT tracks over abrasive surfaces like asphalt, concrete and sensitive pavements is ideal as they minimize damage over these surfaces. On these types of surfaces, you can be sure that there will be no scarring when you use rubber OTT tracks. The same cannot be said about steel OTT tracks which would damage asphalt, concrete and similar on-road applications. Rubber OTT tracks are perfect for applications that require minimal ground damage such as landscaping where turf needs to be protected or on golf courses and parks.
Here are some benefits of choosing Rubber OTT Tracks over Steel OTT tracks: • Enhanced Operator Comfort Rubber OTT tracks guarantee a smoother ride due to reduced vibration and noise levels. The rubber tracks offer a wider ground contact area than skid steer tyres which minimizes ground pressure and improves the stability of your skid steer as it traverses over uneven terrains. Operator comfort is crucial to boosting productivity levels and, in turn, maximizing your
• Enhanced Flotation In general, both OTT track systems will give your skid steer loader increased flotation due to the wider footprint surface area, compared to skid steer tyres. However, rubber OTT tracks are especially great on terrains that require added flotation such as deep mud and sand. Steel OTT tracks are heavier than rubber tracks and they more likely to sink in deep mud. Rubber OTT tracks do a better job reducing ground pressure

which in turn boosts flotation over muddy and sandy terrains.
Metal/ Steel Ott Tracks Steel OTT tracks come in both open bar and closed bar design. Open bar OTT tracks are the most popular type of steel OTT tracks. They are designed for maximum traction, with the open bar style allowing for firmer grip on surfaces. The open bar style is also great for self-cleaning, as the track is able to release dirt and mud that stick on or get lodged in the track as they navigate different terrains. We also see poly pads adapted to the steel OTT versions Below are some advantages that steel OTT tracks have over rubber OTT tracks: • Extended Durability Steel OTT tracks tend to have a much longer service life than rubber OTT tracks when used in abrasive off-road terrains or forestry type applications. Steel tracks are tough, able to withstand rugged, demanding underfoot conditions that would accelerate wear on their rubber OTT track counterparts.
MAINTENANCE
• Optimal Performance in Aggressive Applications Steel OTT tracks are specially engineered to handle rough, challenging terrains where abrasive materials such as jagged-edged stones or rocks and other rough debris from quarrying and demolition work could puncture and damage rubber OTT tracks. Outfit your skid steer with steel OTT tracks if you are working in severe applications such as recycling plants, demolition sites, forest applications and rocky terrains. • Increased Traction in Off-Road Applications Both rubber and steel OTT tracks provide added traction to skid steer loaders. Rubber OTT tracks, all things equal, provides better traction on hard abrasive surfaces like asphalt and concrete. Steel OTT tracks with open bar design are especially ideal in off-road applications that require extra traction such as climbing over fallen trees.
The Wrap Skid steer loaders are mighty little workhorses that come equipped to help you tackle your
biggest challenges. Their small size and manoeuvrability allows them to operate in tight spaces. This makes them a popular choice for commercial construction sites and landscaping projects where digging and moving heavy materials are required. Skid steers can be converted into tracked machines typically in an hour or less. Over the tyre tracks are not sold by all skid steer manufactures, but there is always the option of aftermarket ones. The CTL has a higher initial purchase price and a higher per hour operating cost. If you are running one everyday where you need the advantage that tracks gives you (CTL or OTT) then a CTL is a better choice. Occasional use where you need tracks but not all the time then an OTT equipped machine is a better choice $$$ wise. The best, albeit not the cheapest, solution is to have 1 CTL and 1 wheeled machine and send the machine you need out to do the job. But essentially a skidsteer can be adapted to both if you're on a budget.

IT'S NOT = A MATTER / OF-IF, BUT..WHEN You would have seen the recent news stories about cyber theft and businesses held to ransom. The earthmoving industry is not immune. It’s not just large corporations that are at risk from cyber-attacks. On the contrary, anyone that uses a laptop, computer or stores any sort of customer information on an online platform can be a target.
Scenario 1 – False Invoices Sent to Your Customers Imagine if your computer was hacked and invoices were sent to your debtors asking for payment into your business’ ‘new bank account’. It could be a period of time before this scam became detected and could result in thousands of dollars in financial loss for your business not to mention a privacy breach from your customers.
Attacks against all business are increasing. Small businesses tend to think they are safely tucked away from exposure, but a recent report by a security software specialist indicated that 43% of all attacks are targeted at businesses with less than 250 employees.
Scenario 2 – Stolen Data
Cyber criminals do not discriminate against small or large businesses, if they can make money from you they will.
The hacker could use legitimate credentials belonging to an employee during the security breach which would go largely unnoticed.
While you may not consider your industry is at risk, earthmoving and civil contractors have access to highly confidential information such as infrastructure plans, projects and contract information. You also hold employee files and financial details. Think what would happen if someone had access to this information and the damage it could cause. Possible Cyber-Attack Scenarios
What if a cyber-attack resulted in a significant amount of data stolen from your network, including sensitive information relating to your business’ physical security, layout and plans.
This would allow them to escalate their privilege to administrator level allowing them to access financial and other sensitive information. The threat may lay dormant for a length of time while the attacker monitors your operations and waits for the optimal time to take advantage of the situation. A cyber-attack or data breach could result in significant costs to your business. These

MORE THAN JUST POSI-TRACKS. ASV INTRODUCES THE RS-60 SKID STEER LOADER
The name ASV has long been synonymous with building world class compact track loaders. For nearly 30 years, the company’s Posi-Track loader line has led the industry in machine innovation and design, with performance and durability at the heart of every machine in its CTL line-up. Building on that reputation, ASV has recently released a line of wheeled skidsteer loaders. The RS-60 is the first in the range to be introduced by national distributor ASV Sales & Service. Weighing in at just under 3 tonnes, and powered by a 60hp Tier 4 Perkins turbocharged diesel, the RS-60 is the most compact machine in the ASV skidsteer range. But don’t let its size fool you. The RS-60 has a rated operating capacity of nearly a tonne (907kg to be exact), and break-out force that is at the top of its class. And when the going gets rough, you can count on the RS-60’s industry leading ground clearance and wide departure angles to keep you going. An Operator’s Dream Machine Like its Posi-Track sister machines, ASV skidsteers have been designed to exceed expectations and impress any discerning operator. Pilot hydraulic joystick controls are precise and natural for the operator, providing exceptional hydraulic control of the machine and auxiliary hydraulics, with excellent
feedback and unrivalled precision, giving the operator complete control and confidence to tackle tough jobs, even in tight spaces. A sealed and pressurised cabin is available, with air conditioning performance that was engineered for Australian conditions, featuring best-in-class cooling capacity. BRIDGING THE GAP MINI EXCAVATOR EXCELLENCE
Setting a new standard of mini excavation excellence, Yanmar’s brand new model – Vio12 is using its existing platform to “Bridge the Gap” between Vio10 and Vio17 machines. The ViO12 has an operating weight of 1235 kg and the longest undercarriage of its class with 1440 mm. This results in a real improvement of the operator’s comfort. He benefits from a smoother drive and increases his productivity. The machine is also more stable with heavy loads or attachments. This is very important for key applications for this type of miniexcavator, such as demolition. Yanmar decided to use the same tried and tested joysticks as for its heavier mini-excavators. This well-conceived system offers the following features: The ViO12 is equipped with a Yanmar diesel engine 3TNV70 which delivers a power of 9.2 kW and has a torque of 52 Nm. This enables to improve highly the performance of the machine. Unlike industry standards for this category of machines, Yanmar is using variable axial piston pump which adapt the
flow and the pressure to the load, allowing smoother operation and improving the comfort of the operator. The pump flow of 2 x 11 l/mn and its high working pressure (210 bar) also enable to improve the productivity of the machine and its speed in working motion. The attention paid to the quality of the power line ensures excellent performance while the optimal combination of the ViO12 excavation strengths and work cycles assures exceptional productivity. Built to fit the lifestyle of all Australian working terrains and worksites. Yanmar’s simple and proven technology will continue to serve the owner for years. With its improved comfort level, service life and productivity, this machine is the perfect shape for simple and efficient work in confined spaces. FLEET-FOOTED TOYOTA HUSKI
KEEPS VICTORIAN CONTRACTOR PRODUCTIVE A progressive Victorian earthworks contractor has praised the fleet-footedness of Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders, after using them exclusively for six years.
His work includes house site and driveway preparation, levelling nature strips on new housing estates, dirt and rock removal, backfilling and rubbish removal.
Bill Taylor of L&K Earthworks now has his fourth Huski, a 650kg operating load Toyota 5SDK8 model.
Toyota Huski area sales manager Thomas Machar said Mr Taylor was achieving high utilisation of 1000 hours a year from his Huski. “Bill’s jobs on new housing estates necessitates operating on a variety of ground conditions,” he said.
“They’re light on their feet, don’t get stuck in the mud and have good ground clearance,” Mr Taylor said. “As well as that, they’re tough, reliable, good value for money and efficient. Having a Toyota engine helps minimise the cost-per-hour and hence gives maximum return on investment.” Mr Taylor has added to the versatility and site accessibility of his loader in damp conditions by fitting a set of Bearcat/Camso OTT tracks. “With recent rains, I would not have been able to access half of my jobs in the last month without the tracks,” he said. The rationale for adding the rubber tracks – which can be fitted in less than 45 minutes by experienced operators – was versatility versus the cost of another machine. “It was a case of spending $6000 on the tracks or $90,000 on another machine,” Bill Taylor said. Toyota Material Handling’s Melbourne branch supplied Mr Taylor’s loader and services it every 250 hours, via a mobile service unit based in Sunbury. Mr Taylor has been in the earthmoving industry for 14 years and his work ranges as far afield as Pakenham, Kilmore and Torquay from his base in Bacchus Marsh.
“He could be loading his truck on the road or crossover, running across gravel and rock, or working in dirt clay and mud. The Huski is perfect for this application.” “Adding the OTT tracks allows Bill to continue to work in this application through the wetter months of the year, without the issues and costs of operating a track loader in an application that is better suited to a skid steer loader.” “Most operators will only utilise their tracks during the wettest three or four months of the year. This results in the tracks lasting for years and low running costs for most of the year when operating on tyres.” The popular Toyota 5SDK8 has been tested in Australia and proven nationally. It has a reliable and powerful 2.5-litre Toyota diesel engine delivering 52 horsepower (39kW) and 160Nm and a rated operating capacity of 650kg. Toyota Material Handling offers a comprehensive range of Huski skid-steer loaders, from the compact 4SDK4 to the powerful 5SDK11. THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR EVERY DUST PROBLEM!
Fine dust emissions are hazardous, particularly in these dry summer months but Boss Attachments have the perfect solution. The new to Australia, MB Dustcontrol system is sure to become a staple on jobsites around the country with their unique system that is so simple and effective we’re scratching our heads as to why it hasn’t been here for years. MB Dustcontrol are already a world-wide leader in the control of dust and odour with their systems that weigh down the emitted dust particles by binding them with droplets of water (fog) so they quickly fall to the ground through gravity. Livio Pace at Boss Attachments says that every dust and odour problem is unique so they work closely with their customers to find the right solution. Boss Attachments stock the full range of MB Dustcontrol spray cannons that are available with or without a trailer, water tank or generator and offer options such as a UV unit, electrical tilting system,

VOLVO L260H:
TWO FULL BUCKETS FOR ONE FULL TRUCK The new L260H wheel loader from Volvo Construction Equipment is a true global two-pass loader that is purpose-built to take on the toughest jobs, ensuring optimum performance, profitability and a 10% fuel efficiency improvement. Introducing the L260H, the latest addition to Volvo Construction Equipment’s H-Series range designed for heavy-duty applications. At 34-tonnes, the machine is purpose-built to load on-highway trucks in just two even passes. UP UP UP! When compared to previous models, the numbers speak for themselves. The L260H boasts 5% more horsepower and torque, 15% increase in payload and features larger bucket sizes. Add the optional revolutionary Volvo Co-Pilot with Load Assist, and intelligently redesigned lifting-arm system and frame, and the result is greater fuel efficiency, faster cycle times, increased on-site productivity, maximum operator comfort and simpler serviceability. ENGINEERED FOR EFFICIENCY Fitted with the latest 310 kW (416 hp) Volvo D13E engine, the H-Series wheel loader delivers a powerful and efficient performance. The Stage 3 compliant engine produces high torque – 2,343 Nm (1,728 ft lbf) – at low engine speeds to minimize emissions and fuel consumption. The new-generation machine is also equipped with an efficient cooling fan that draws
power only when needed. Lower fan speeds reduce noise, resulting in greater operator comfort and a lower total cost of ownership. Fuel efficiency is enhanced by the Volvo-patented OptiShift technology, which integrates the Volvo Reverse By Braking (RBB) function and new torque converter with lock-up to reduce fuel consumption significantly. Ideal for short cycle or truck loading applications, the RBB senses the loader’s direction and slows the machine by automatically applying the service brakes instead of the torque converter, thereby increasing fuel efficiency, operator comfort and machine lifetime. The driveline lock-up, meanwhile, improves drive response, rim pull, incline performance and fuel efficiency. Also contributing to fuel efficiency is the unique new transmission, featuring the Volvo Fully Automatic Power Shift (FAPS) concept. Proven to deliver more efficient work cycles, FAPS shifts the gears to match the engine and travel speed to the best gear ratio, ensuring the loader operates in optimal gear for lower fuel consumption and wear. LIFT MORE, DO MORE Not only is the Volvo L260H one of the most efficient large wheel loaders on the market, it is also one of the most productive. The new load-sensing hydraulic system supplies power to the hydraulic functions only when required, resulting in greater on site productivity. Combined with features, including the new transmission, new converter and new rehandling bucket, the hydraulic system increases fuel efficiency

by up to 10%, and offers better control over the load and attachment. Unlike previous models, the L260H does not use hydraulic pumps to lower the boom, but rather the combined gravitational effect and weight of the boom and the bucket – a feature that appears only on the L260H wheel loader. The high pressure hydraulic system allows for faster cycle times and increased lift force, demonstrated by the lifting-arm system, which yields 295.6 kN (66,453.5 lbf) lift capacity. The lift arm has been redesigned to feature a lighter, stronger arm, capable of handling 15% more payload. The L260H features the proven Z-bar linkage for strong, powerful digging in hard materials, and delivers a high breakout force of 283.7 kN (63,778.3 lbf). The L260H also offers a dump height of 3.1 m (10.2 ft), aiding loading efficiency, as well as a 50mm (2 in) longer wheel base, further increasing stability. The L260H can be specified with the optional Boom Suspension System (BSS) to enhance productivity by up to 20%. By absorbing shock and reducing the bouncing and bucket spillage when operating on uneven terrain, the BSS enables faster and more comfortable cycle times and extends the lifetime of the machine. PROFIT IN EVERY BUCKET The L260H comes with two new buckets that are specifically designed to fit the machine – Volvo Rock bucket and Volvo Rehandling bucket. Optimized for the application, Volvo Rock and Volvo Rehandling buckets enable the wheel loader to perform at maximum capacity, helping customers save time, money and effort. The new buckets provide faster and more efficient bucket fill – and up to 10% better fuel efficiency. With a 7.3 m3 (9.51 yd3) Volvo Rehandling bucket, the L260H quickly fills the truck in only two passes – two full buckets for one full truck. The new Volvo Rock bucket is larger than the model it replaces. The Rehandling kit optimizes the loader for stockpiling and loading processed material, such as sand and other aggregates. GREATER COMFORT, GREATER PRODUCTIVITY Built to work hard, the L260H is also designed
to deliver a productive and comfortable work environment. The industry-leading Volvo Care Cab provides good visibility, comfort and features logically-grouped ergonomic controls, helping the operator achieve an efficient and productive operation. The spacious air conditioned interior is insulated from noise and vibrations – the latter thanks to viscous cab mounts and air suspended seat. And with state-of-the-art hydraulic controls, the operator is better able to customize the operation according to their preferences. With a large expanse of glass, the ROPS/FOPS protected cab provides an unhampered view of the jobsite. Visibility can be further improved, thanks to the standard rear-view camera display or the optional on-board Volvo Co-Pilot display, that when fitted with the optional Load Assist, provides operators with real-time insight into the operation. LOCKED AND LOADED The L260H wheel loader offers simple service and maintenance requirements that promote high uptime. The new frame provides easy access to conveniently grouped checkpoints. The tilting cab can be operated hydraulically – the first of its kind in its size class – and convenient ground-level access to the engine compartment. Accumulators are located on the exterior of the BSS for easy maintenance repairs. These features combine to help operators conduct maintenance and inspections more efficiently with less downtime, increasing productivity and performance. Volvo also offers a range of aftermarket solutions to maximize uptime and help customers better control costs. Genuine Volvo Parts, advanced electronic monitoring diagnostics, MATRIS™ software and Customer Support Agreements are just some of the many solutions that are designed to help ensure the Volvo L260H maximizes return on investment for owners. Like all Volvo machines, the L260H wheel loader is supported by a global service infrastructure of technicians, workshops and dealers. For more information call: 1300 139 804 or visit:cjd.com.au

NEW CASE DOZERS
MORE STRENGTH. MORE COMMAND. MORE DONE. It has been over a decade since we’ve seen a new industry-leader in Crawler Dozers. It’s time to meet the new Case M Series Dozers. Long-time owner-operator of Case Dozers, Paul Schofield of Allscho Dozer Hire jumped the queue and imported the first M Series Dozer to Australia earlier this year. Interested to see how the first 2,000 hours have been? “The machine has surprised me with just how much stronger and more powerful it is. The Case 850M is much stronger underneath, is heavier & just does everything you ask of it really well. The cab is comfortable to ride in & has superior vision from inside of the cab compared to other dozers I have used.” The M Series Dozers feature industry-leading horsepower providing unbeatable pushing power. Operator comfort is high on the list with a new redesigned cabin, boasting unmatched visibility & low noise to increase your productivity. “Once It comes on site and does its thing, everyone is quite pleased and amazed with the job it can do. The machine pushes & knocks things over that you would be very surprised it can do.” Ease of maintenance is important to extend your
dozer’s life. “It’s very easy to service, everything is accessible because there are lockable doors everywhere. NEW YEAR, NEW GEAR THE TOROIDAL-TILT REVOLUTION
With the first release selling out, there has been immense anticipation around the next release of the Calibre Toroidal-Tilt Coupler – which is set to take place at the beginning of 2018. A patented toroidal actuator and the first in the world of its kind - the Toroidal-Tilt Coupler from Calibre is the first tilting coupler in history to incorporate twin rams displacement cylinders that are in fact curved or ‘bent’ - a design that has changed the way hydraulic rams are perceived in the industry. Soon after its debut, the Toroidal-Tilt took home the Best Innovative Product Award for the Diesel, Dirt and Turf Expo in 2017 and since then, we have seen a growing momentum for the Toroidal-Tilt across the Australasian portfolio. The development of the Toroidal-Tilt was never straightforward, Calibre aimed to introduce a revolutionary design to fill the gap in the market between the existing tilting couplers. 15 years in the making, Calibre introduced a more compact,
robust coupler with less moving parts and easier maintenance - allowing servicing of the actuator whilst on the machine. Available to customers with Calibre’s latest quick hitch coupler, the Sure-Grip, the Toroidal-Tilt now requires a one-step connection and disconnection process. Calibre’s Smart Valve Technology is also incorporated - to allow for precise operator control and improved holding force. The Toroidal actuator boasts constant torque and enables the tilting of attachments 50 degrees each way (100 degrees in total) adding complete versatility to your attachments. For those who missed out on the first release of the Toroidal-Tilt Coupler - they will be available at the beginning of 2018. We anticipate that they will sell out quickly so we encourage you to contact Calibre today for a quote. sales@calibre.equipment or visit www.calibre.equipment

TAKEUCHI TL6R RADIAL LIFT ®
COMPACT LOADER
Contractors and operators are always looking for the most compact equipment that’s going to reliably deliver the most power when using any groundengaging tools and attachments. The Takeuchi TL6R compact track loader is the latest model from this Japanese equipment manufacturer that pioneered the mini crawler loader, releasing their TL15 and TL20 models in 1986 -- way before rubber tracks were introduced. Representing a significant advance in technology and construction compared with earlier models, the TL6R packs a punch in the power department, while its cleverly designed cabin easily accommodates generously proportioned operators. The low-profile cabin height allows the loader to be driven through the door openings in most residential carports and garages. This feature makes it a breeze when an operator needs access to a back yard where materials need to be hauled from the street. Equipped with a powerful tier 4 final 48kW engine and an active power control, operators can maintain maximum engine power for optimal performance in all ground conditions while using a range of attachments. The Takeuchi joystick system, already regarded as one of the industry’s best, has a redesigned hydraulic pilot control system that gives the operator a comfortable, positive feel that enables very direct and precise operation.
The machine comfortably handles an impressive 835kg operating load (rated at just 35 percent of tipping), while reversing safety is managed by a builtin reversing camera displaying an expansive view of what lies behind. Reduction of cabin sound levels and vibration has also been a redesign objective, achieved by re-engineering an already sophisticated design undercarriage and quiet ride tracks. Triple flange track rollers minimise the de-tracking risk when an operator encounters other conditions that may cause this costly and time-consuming track issue. Large LED work lights improve the level of low-light visibility, and a new design full-size suspension high back seat gives great support and further reduces fatigue-causing vibration. Its size, power and features make the Takeuchi TL6R compact excavator the perfect choice for professional landscapers, builders, general contractors and rental companies. The Takeuchi TL6R compact track loader at a glance: • • • • •
Total weight 3,530 kg Tipping load 2,390kg Rated operating capacity 835 kg Bucket breakout force 326.4 kN Ground pressure 34.8 kPa

RAISING THE BAR OUT WEST WITH 1800 HOSE VAN
Anybody who owns a piece of earthmoving equipment knows that there are plenty of mobile hydraulic hose repair services around, but don’t be fooled, some are better than others. One of the newer kids on the block, 1800 HOSE VAN, supported by Gates Australia, is fast making inroads on the scene, taking on the big boys head-on with high levels of customer service, and 24 hour / seven day a week accessibility from its growing team of highly skilled operators. One such operator servicing the greater Perth region is John MacAngus – you’d be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable technician anywhere. As well as being a qualified mechanic, John spent 15 years working on oil and gas rigs where he specialised in high pressure hoses and water jetting along with decommissioning of drilling machinery. After leaving that industry, John set-up a mechanical workshop where he began building a client base servicing and repairing ride-on mowers, tractors and agricultural equipment, later adding to his services by becoming a 1800 HOSE VAN Licensed Business Operator “Given my background and the sorts of customers I was dealing with on the mechanical side of the business, it made perfect sense to become involved
with 1800 HOSE VAN,” John said. Running his workshop from Bedfordale about 30 minutes’ drive south of Perth, John is servicing a growing array of clients within a two hour radius of this home base. “I’m building up my customers and working with clients in agriculture, construction and the mining industries,” John said. Along with customers reaping the benefits of his industry knowledge and many years’ experience working with hydraulics, they also receive extremely high levels of service. “I pride myself on delivering exceptional service,” he said. “I’ve heard stories that some other providers expect the damaged or faulty hose to be removed by the time they arrive. They essentially turn-up, make the new hose and leave it with the customer to do the installation themselves. “I do all of the work, I can diagnose, remove the culprit part, make a new one and refit – I’ll even replace seals and cylinders if need be, it’s all part of the service.” For further information contact 1800 HOSE VAN (1800 467 382), or visit www.1800HOSEVAN.com.au

SAY GOODBYE TO TRAFFIC ON THE BV AUGUSTUS BRIDGE
No cars will have access to the Augustus Bridge in Dresden until the end of 2019. Built during the 1700s, today the bridge is undergoing a complete restoration, which will return it to its original structure and repair the damages caused by the flooding of the Elbe in 2013. Only some means of transport will be able to cross during the restoration: buses, taxis, rescue services, cyclists, pedestrians, and construction vehicles. And an MB Crusher milling machine. That’s right, an MB-R800 (the milling machine for diggers from 10 - 22 tonnes) worked on the Augustus Bridge construction site for two months. Mounted on the digger Liebherr 918, the MB Crusher milling
machine was used to destroy part of the cement that filled the bridge’s arches. The historical bridge and the restoration works The Augustusbrücke is 390 metres long and consists of nine arches. It connects the old district of Dresden with the new city, and it is one of the oldest junctions on the Elbe river. It is an historical bridge, for which 23 million Eurohas been allocated to the restoration fund. Once the restoration is done, passage over the bridge will be restricted to pedestrians only. The MB Crusher Milling Machine at Work The milling process was carried out in two stages.

WHAT'S HOT
First, the MB milling machine worked on the bridge’s diagonal grout lines, to free the expansion joints. This was one of the most delicate phases, as it was necessary to work on it without damaging the structure. Then, the MB-R800 was used to remove part of the cement that filled the bridge’s arches, digging as far as 3 metres deep. Once the milling work is finished, the arch will be filled with new cement and the walking area will be covered with the stones that previously formed the old structure. The bridge can therefore return to its former, original glory. Focus on MB-R There are three models in the MB-R range by MB Crusher: the smallest, the MB-R700, works with diggers from 6 to 13 tonnes; the MB-R800, the star of the Dresden construction site, weighs 1 tonne and adapts to diggers from 10 to 22 tonnes; finally, the largest in the series, the MB-R900, is for diggers ranging from 19 to 35 tonnes. All models are equipped with an integrated safety system that intervenes if the digger's parameters are
not properly adjusted. Not only that, the two drums can be dismantled directly on site, without having to take the milling machine to a specialised garage. On top of that, their uniqueness allows them to work even under water. Even the digger is grateful when an MB milling machine is used. That’s right, because the milling machine uses a AAA+ hydraulic system with an integrated Power Booster which reduces the hydraulic power required by the operating machine. The direct drive twin motor system, on the other hand, is a patented system that allows the force of the two toothed heads to be distributed differently. This is a huge advantage, since the power of the two drums is managed according to the material's toughness and the vibrations sent through the digger’s arm are absorbed. It is possible to work on different materials with the same milling machine, whether they are tough or less resistant: just choose between the low and full set of spikes to be used depending on the material to be milled. ALLIED EARTHMOVERS
ALLIED EARTHMOVERS If you are an owner operator of earthmoving equipment (including trucks and tippers) it probably seems there is an extra demand on your business every week, whether it be legislation, Work Health and Safety compliance, insurance, employment issues, maintenance, etc, let alone finding work for your machine. How do you keep up to date with new legislation and changes? Who does the owner operator rely on to inform them of these changes? In many cases your business partner will also be your life partner, and oftentimes life just gets in the way of business. Your partner may be involved in looking after the family and home, and we all know how time-consuming that can be, as well as helping to run the business. It can be very difficult for owners of a small business to adequately attend to home life, business paperwork and compliance, and operating a machine on site. Involving a third party in your business can be a wise investment and joining an industry organisation is an easy, effective, cost efficient way of easing the pressure. When you join an Industry Association, it should be letting you know everything that is happening in your industry that is applicable to you in a simple, clear and concise manner. The last thing you need to do in the evening is to wade through pages of information to sort out whether the information is applicable to you or not. At Allied Earthmovers Association, we will keep you informed on the information you need. However, we will not just send you the information you need and leave you to
sort it out alone. We are not just an online information site. We will also invite the experts to meetings to talk to you face to face so you can put your hand up to clarify your own particular queries. Face to face gatherings allow you to speak with likeminded colleagues and owner operators about the issues that affect you all. An opportunity to let off steam away from home to someone that understands exactly where you are coming from is a luxury that is not available to all. And of course, while having a good ole’ fashioned rant, you will also be listening, learning, rationalising and gearing up to deal with the latest issue. However, once you are a member of Allied Earthmovers and have sorted out your insurance, WHS and other paperwork, you will also see the other benefits we have to offer. Our WorkShare system is a simple, yet effective system to share work overload and shortages. It has helped many members look after their customers during busy times or breakdowns and provided work opportunities during quiet times. And the community and social aspect is great fun. Our members have been involved in some great Charity Field Days, usually donating time rather than money. If you are an owner operator and feel you could do with easing some pressure, why not give us a call. What have you got to lose? You can contact us on 02 4732 5233 or check out our website www. goldenbucket.org.au. Allied Earthmovers Association – Run by the members – For the members
