Bianca Bianca Dumitraşcu is a graphic designer based in Bucharest, Romania. After studying Graphic Design and working for 8 years in advertising, she pursued her love for type through a Masters in Advanced Typography in Barcelona. Since returning to Bucharest, she launched Ampersand Studio and now shares her time between client work, travelling and many educational projects for the creative community in Romania. “After 8 years in branding and advertising I’ve become deeply infatuated with typography and letters. I started to see every letter as a person, with her own personality, passions, character, life history and body language. I’ve got so intrigued by it that in 2016 I’ve moved to Barcelona and I began a Master’s degree in Advanced Typography at EINA. Since then, I’ve devoted my time exploring a wide range of styles and techniques, from calligraphy and decorative characters to type design. In 2018 I’ve returned to Bucharest and launched Ampersand Studio, where I create custom letters for logos, books, packaging, greeting cards, posters and more. Few months later, I created Caracter — an educational project through which I offers courses, workshops and consultancy in calligraphy, lettering, typography and type design.”

What was your first approach to lettering and typographic design? B: Although I did some sort of lettering before (without knowing what it is). It was in 2014 during the first edition of 36 Days Of type when I realised that I have an interest for letters and I enjoy playing with their shape and meaning. What would you say was your motivation to dedicate yourself to lettering and typographic design? B: At the beginning it was all about the process. I really enjoyed drawing and writing letters, it was my after work therapy for a year or two. Now it’s more about discovering cultural identities and understanding the publishing and design history. How important is it to explore letters and their elements? B: I believe that exploration and practice are the most important thing if you want to understand how to achieve a good balance between the black and white space and shape of letters that truly communicate what you want to communicate. What inspires you to make new designs? B: Mostly life, feelings and beautiful things. When I’m doing personal work it’s like writing in a journal, it has to have something personal that I’ll keep as a reminder for the future. For client work, I always look to communicate the message and the personality of the brand in the most beautiful way I can.

What do you think has been your most important project? B: I always say that the most important project or the one that I love the most is always the last one. I always remember the projects that meant something in some point in my life like Life Philosophy, or the ones where I started to explore something new and learned something from it, like 36 Days of Type 2020. Did you ever imagine yourself doing what you do right now? B: Yes. In 2016 when I left my job in advertising because I loved drawing letters and I believed that maybe I can make a living out of it. It worked, but I had to work for it, and at some point became more than just a passion. Who are your biggest influences? B: Many historical Alphabet books and designers like Louise Fili, Herb Lubalin, Doyald Young and Ken Barber. What is the best part of your job? B: That moment when I lose myself working on a piece and I forget about time. What do you think is the best place to develop yourself working in typography and lettering design? B: The best place is the one you’re already in. If you really want something you can do it anywhere. Yes, there are some cities where the community is bigger and you can find many courses, workshops, events and exhibitions like New York, Barcelona, Berlin and Amsterdam but luckily the internet has no borders and you can have access to many incredible tools and materials anywhere in the world. I should know, I’m from Romania :) Do you have any advice for someone who would like to dedicate to typographic design? B: Do it! Read, practice and keep your curiosity alive. Everyday it’s an opportunity to learn something.

#36DaysofType 36 Days of Type is a proyect that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. A yearly open call exploring the creative boundaries of letterforms, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day for 36 consecutive days, as a global and simultaneous act showing the outcome of the ability to represent the same symbols from thousands different perspectives. A project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities. For each edition, participants share their artworks via Instagram, by uploading their creations to their profiles and using the project’s hastags to submit their work and enter the challenge. From all the daily entries, a curated selection of artworks is handpicked by the 36DOT team to be published on the 36 Days of Type official account for each day and for every letter and number until the end of the challenge. In addition, once each official round is over, all the series done during the edtion will be also elegible to be showcased in the project accounts, as a way to promote the work from the artists taking part. Bianca has been part of this challenge since 2015, working each year and projecting new concepts of typography.
