In search of the Davaoeño artistic identity Text by Karlo Bringas

Art by Keith Rivera and Megan Palero
n June 12, Snapchat released a series of stickers and mass snap animation on its app in celebration of Philippine Independence Day. These animated figures stickers, shown to the right, were illustrated by Keith Rivera and Megan Palero, and animated by Megan. The stickers are charming (of course) and well-made (naturally). But what I find striking about these is the amount of Davao-specific details Keith and Megan put into this project. For instance, the sorbetero cart sticker has the words "Mang Danny" on its side. The jeepney with the tarsier hanging out back plies the Toril route. And, most clever of all, the tableau at bottom right is pretty much the Centennial Monument of Peace and Unity fronting the Legislative Building, with costume modifications. These make for fun Easter Eggs. Filipino Snapchat users can use these stickers to celebrate the occasion, or simply because they're cute. But Davaoeño users will get more of a kick out of these, as Keith and Megan's artwork speak particularly to them. It makes for a wonderful inversion of the Imperial Manila narrative, where mass media does not specifically talk to those outside of the capital.
It gets me to thinking about just how we must go about representing our identity, as Davaoeños, as Mindanaoans, and as Filipinos. With what symbols can we represent ourselves? Can these symbols be expanded into different contexts, or must the original context remain untouched, unedited? At the heart of it all, the question: What does it mean to be Davaoeño, and how does this translate to the art and design we produce? I should note that these questions are not limited only to Davao-based artists. The Bangsamoro, having recently formed after the January 2019 plebiscite, stands to gain from creating a solid artistic identity. I simply limit my questions in this article to Davao due to the fact that I am Davaoeño. I live in Davao, I work in Davao, my views are colored by the experience of living in Davao. Nor could I claim to give to prescribe what Davao identity is in this article. I am merely a graphic designer, aiming to be merely good. Greater artists than I are plenty in this city, and the students of philosophy and culture are bound to come up with better answers than I ever could. I write this series to ask. With asking, I hope to spark a conversation.
