Dhairya Doshi “This portfolio is a compilation of my academic and professional work over the course of five years in architecture.” These projects differ in terms of scale and approach to space design. It reflects the decisions made and questions raised throughout the architecture program’s journey. “I believe that a good example of architecture is a space that gives the user a sense of belonging while also responding to the context and nature around it, because the quality of our surroundings affects the quality of our lives.” Some of the works here are result of collaborative efforts for which credit has been given.

0 1 I N T E G R AT E : RELOOKING AT THE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE A CASE OF GHATKOPAR BUS DEPOT AND METRO RAIL

Architectural Thesis (Semester IX, Semester X) Location: Ghatkopar, Mumbai Guide: Jamshid Bhiwandiwala

The research started the following questions about the transport in the city of Mumbai “What role can architecture play in enhancing the transit infrastructure and making commuter travel more convenient?” “How can architecture add to existing transit infrastructure, allowing for more seamless travel and better connectivity for transit?” Travel patterns in urban areas are becoming increasingly complex, and many public transport users need to transfer between different modes to complete their daily trips. Transport interchanges play a key role as urban transport network nodes, and the quality of the service provided in an urban transport interchange therefore has a direct influence on travelers’ daily experience. Reducing transfer disruption in multimodal trips is a key element for ensuring seamless mobility in big cities. Public transportation has become a real concern. For decades, private vehicles appeared to be the optimal way for free and spontaneous travel, and this will continue to be true in rural areas and many small towns. However, people are flocking to cities all around the world, and cities merely do not have room for everyone’s cars. Meanwhile, the combining concerns of climate change and the ever-increasing prices of fuels are driving a reconsideration of how cities function. The public transport system is a critical challenge in nearly every developing country, however, the situation varies from one country to another even from one city to the other. Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure is developed by many agencies, resulting in little or no coordination

in the city’s infrastructure construction and planning. Different agencies roles in infrastructure projects are confined to their respective jurisdictions, with no serious attempt to cooperate with other modes or authorities. Although the Unified Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMMTA) was established to provide balanced coordination between various agencies working in Mumbai, there is still no seamless transition in travelling and switching between modes of transportation. The thesis aimed to study transportation infrastructure in Ghatkopar, and explore the potential of a transit interchange hub with sophisticated connectivity which provides convenience in travel experience and encourage people to utilize more mass transit systems like buses and metros rather than private vehicles.

Reducing emissions from vehicles would result in cleaner air and a healthier lifestyle.

Encourage mass transit rather than individualised and privatised movement. Reduce travel time to move around the city.

Cities with strong public transportation can reduce the nation’s carbon emissions significantly

SOCIAL/HUMANE Can be imagined/designed in as places for social interaction. An environment that enhances the daily human urban experience. An environment designed for people and their movements in mind, rather than automobiles.

The site was chosen in Ghatkopar which is an essential transport network which links central and western Mumbai by central rail and metro lines respectively, which will also connect to thane — via the upcoming new metro (Line 4).

Why B.E.S.T. Bus Depot/ Terminal? Following a preliminary analysis of B.E.S.T. Ghatkopar Depot and its location, it was identified as a potential site option. The area is quickly expanding, with numerous mid-rise projects completed and others under construction. There are neighbouring commercial and educational establishments that will also complement the intervention. The intervention with some kind of commercial development, in conjunction with the transit hub, will also help to generate some revenue for the B.E.S.T Transport department (which is constantly making losses over the years).

Ghatkopar Bus Terminal

Ghatkopar Bus Depot

Option 1

1- Ghatkopar Metro Station(Line 1) 2- Ghatkopar Railway Station 3- Ghatkopar Bus Depot

The major transit points in Ghatkopar are the Ghatkopar Railway Station, Ghatkopar Metro Station, and the Ghatkopar Bus Depot.

Ghatkopar Bus Terminal: The site’s primary function is to allow passengers to board and get off from buses. There is a small ground-floor structure with restrooms, a ticket room, and a small pantry for Bus Drivers and Conductors.

Option 2

Ghatkopar Bus Depot: It is a large site with three main sections and a central open area for bus parking. It houses the administration building, the engineering department, which maintains and repairs the buses, and the fueling department.

EXISTING SITE STUDY - BUS TERMINAL

The primary function of the existing site is to allow passengers to board and get off from buses. There is a small ground-floor structure with restrooms, a ticket room, and a small pantry for Bus Drivers and Conductors.

The site is also adjacent to the metro line 4, making it an ideal potential site for a transit interchange that connects two major modes of transportation - Bus and Metro - as well as dedicated autos and taxi stands.

Transit-

The city is struggling to keep up with the everincreasing demand for public transportation. Despite the fact that BEST buses are fast catching up to pre- Covid levels, with over 2.5 million people transported daily, BEST is still operating at a loss on an annual basis. Furthermore, the city's present BEST bus terminals/depots do not have any inclusivity or social amenities.

Retail Commercial- The BEST will gain financially from

the development of commercial infrastructure in addition to the bus station infrastructure. The increased foot traffic in the area benefits local businesses as well.

Social Space- Incorporating greens, public programs and

amenities along with the hub which can contribute to a better sense of security and belonging. There is a nalla on the northern side of the existing bus terminal which must also be handled with in an environmentally sustainable manner.

A large elemental staircase is introduced as a design feature which climbs reaches upto Interchange Plaza at level 2.

The entire back side of the site has been used as a buffer, with green cover and landscaping along the nallah edge, with some hawking activity and vending.

The internal blocks are imagined to be elevated with a very little footprint on the ground, allowing for a fluid movement on the ground level plaza.

The commercial front imagined along the road edge and an elevated block which connects the connector from the Metro.

The Semester 5 studio started with a study of an affliction given to each one along with site study in Mumbra, resulting in students choosing their own site to locate their interventions as per the afflictions given to them. Affliction: Seasonal Paralysis Brief: Looking at the site which was earlier a playground for kids but then was on verge of getting converted into a Garbage dump place, a Waste Sorting Institute was designed. The Programs in the institute include Waste Sorting Facility, Dormitories for workers, Creche for workers children and a visiting center.

VACATION HOME | Competition Site: Lithuania (Utena County) Area: 35sq.m. (house module) and 15 sq.m. (sauna) Collaborators: Anushka G. & Ria S. Brief: The house sits at an isolated location in Šeikiai in Moletai, along the edge of the samavas lake cocooned inbetween variety of coniferous trees. The selected location itself helps in providing an exquisite experience among the trees, laid parallel to the lake. It is a single unit with a mezzanine office floor, with an one sided sloped roof towards the lake. Particular attention is paid to the building orientation which is set to towards the south side creating warm comfortable interiors and natural lighting, reducing additive energy usage to minimum.

SIDDHPUR MEASURE DRAWING COLLABORATIVE WORK - GROUP OF 6

Siddhpur is a unique legacy of the Dawoodi Bohra community, in Patan, North Gujarat. The historic town of Siddhpur

is like an ageing queen living in denial. Lining the streets are colourful, grand mansions and havelis that look distinctly European, most of them now shuttered and falling to decay.

HOUSING IN THE POL | Semester IV Site: Lal Doshi ni Pol, Siddhpur, Gujarat. Guides: Quaid Doongerwala The site for designing was in a Heritage is in gated community Pol typology that dates back to almost 350 years. With a cluster of nineteen residential houses, this pol is detached from the hullabaloo of the outside street. The microclimate of this pol has a very specific character to it and it rather stands as an independent one. The project was built after carving out an inner coutyard space as a response to climate similar to the traditional architecture in Hot and Dry regions and can be used as a gathering space for the Pol. Site being pack from all major sides light elements such as jali screens, skylight, terraces at different locations to experiment and experience different quality of light in the units. Common multipurpose spaces are incorporated within the building keeping in mind the interaction for users and Pol at large. 6 residential units are created with intresting play in section within the building.

10WALLS OF

LEARNING

Institutional Architecture Project| PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Location: Rewatra, Rajasthan.

Walls of Learning is a school located in rural Rajasthan, that will provide 1000 underprivileged children, an opportunity at a sound education through this charitable initiative. The unique design of the school comprises of large, double-height, load-bearing, random-rubble masonry walls made of locally sourced indigenous Khato sandstone, that create a suitable micro-climate within the harsh conditions of Marwar. Taking into considerations of the harsh climate of Rajasthan, the school is designed to have courtyards, centrally placed that allow for the passage of breezes through the classroom spaces. The project sits on 5 acre rectangular plot of land in the midst of a desert. The walls thermally insulate the entire habitable floor space while also protecting from the sand storms

Scope of work:

1. Drafting: Staff Quarters Elevation 2. Structural 3D – Beams and Columns. 3. Referencing for Landscape Ideas.

Residential + Interior | PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Location: Rewatra, Rajasthan This project, based in Rajasthan, is fit snug in a tight plot. This is a multi-family residential project, focused on the principles of community living. The ground floor is designed as common area for the entire project. There is a divide between the floor plates from first floor onwards that distinguishes the other family rooms. The terrace houses the servant quarters. The project is designed taking consideration on the vastu principles.

Scope of work:

My responsibilities on this project included working on floor plan layouts revisions after multiple client discussions, as well as updates on structural 3D as by discussed with the consultants.

STRUCTURAL 3D

12AVALON Residential Interior Project| PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Location: Thane.

This 4BHK interior project, with a scenic view of the city calls for a warm minimalistic approach for its interiors. The colour palette is kept light, filled with monotones of warm beige and natural stone finishes that add a touch of luxury. A touch of natural rope settings, grey and beige upholstery and sheer curtains were ideas given to make the space feel even more lighter and classier. Some accent walls of rooms like the living room and the passage are adorned with panelling that complements the beige tone of the wall colours. It adds additional depth and is administered for fixing furniture like television and units, with a clean look.

Scope of work:

1. Drafting: Toilet Elevations, Panelling drawings for bedrooms, Bed and Wardrobe drawings, Kitchen and Pantry Working drawing. 2. Regular Site Supervision and Contractor communication. 3. 3d Modelling of Kitchen, Pantry and Mandir. 4. Quantities calculations for Toilet Marble/Tiles. 5. Furniture details: 3d modelling for dimensioning and preparing a comprehensive document for minor details. 6. Maintaining Bill Book for all different materials and payments.

The boutique hotel project was designed for the pitching stage for a client. The challenge here was to situate the hotel in a tight site with just 375 Sq.M. keeping in consideration some basic Vastu Principles.

Scope of work:

My contribution for the entire process was right from research and office presentation on Boutique Hotels to making the layouts and conceptual volumetric 3D and the client presentation.

As the spine moves upwards, it is joined by smaller garden balconies that connect offices. The building on top concludes with a penthouse for the client and a rich luxurious view stretching over the swimming pool.
