Tigers win to keep final hopes alive

Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman whacks one towards the mid-wicket region during their Asia Cup T20 clash against Sri Lanka at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday

n Mazhar Uddin The Tigers gunned down holders Sri Lanka by 23 runs in a crucial Asia Cup Twenty20 clash at Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday. In the process, Bangladesh registered their maid-

en shortest format win over the reigning World T20 champions in five attempts. Following a brilliant 80-run knock by player of the match Sabbir Rahman which guided his side to a challenging 147/7, the Tigers bowlers displayed a disciplined approach, led by Al Amin Hossain (3/34), to restrict the Lankans to 124/8. Shakib al Hasan chipped in with two economical wickets of his own while pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman also bowled superbly, giving away only 19 runs in his quota of four overs.

Earlier, Sabbir played some delightful strokes en route to scoring a fine 54-ball 80, featuring 10 fours and three sixes, and alongside Shakib (32) and Mahmudullah (23*), the swashbuckling right-hander guided the Tigers to a respectable tally. The hosts however, were in all sorts of trouble after batting first, losing both the opening batsmen, Mohammad Mithun and Soumya Sarkar, for ducks while Mushfiqur Rahim (four) was also dismissed cheaply as the Tigers were struggling on 26/3 inside the fifth over.

Sabbir though was unperturbed at the other end, launching a counter-attack, blasting 18 runs off Nuwan Kulasekara in the fourth over which was studded with three boundaries and a six. The stylish right-hander played an array of majestic strokes all around the ground but counted himself lucky on 46 when he was dropped at deep mid-wicket. The miss proved to be costly as the Rajshahi cricketer soon reached his fifty off 38 balls. Shakib from the other hand provided Sabbir valuable

assistance as the fourth wicket pair added 82 runs to take Bangladesh past the 100-run mark in the 16th over. Sabbir played the role of the aggressor as he collected 58 runs during his partnership with Shakib. By the time Sabbir departed in the 16th over, the foundation had already been laid with the Tigers putting on 39 runs from their last four overs. Paceman Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the Lankan bowlers with figures of 3/30 while skipper Angelo Mathews and Kulasekara scalped one each. l
