If your grandmother derives a significant portion of her income from interest on deposit accounts, the last couple of years have been an unrelenting financial squeeze. Income from interest on deposits has been nearly halved in the last year by a tax burden that has not budged despite falling interest rates. Meagre earnings from fixed deposits has meant that retired people, the physically disabled and those between jobs have had to make do in straitened circumstances. Income from deposits have
come down to almost half due to a rapid fall in interest rates on deposits in the last year. The tax burden imposed by the government three years ago has further eroded profit. Some experts disagree with taxing interest income so highly and wonder whether the coming budget will bring relief for people like your granny. “Income taxes on profit from deposits is illogical as interest rates fell almost half amid excess liquidity in the market,” Mohammed Nurul Amin, managing director and CEO of Meghna Bank, said. “Banks will be losers in the long run as current excess liquidity will meet up the demand one year more.” He said people now keep money at the bank just for security: it is presumably safer than storing it underneath the mattress.
