A passage to

India

The fun, quirky show about Zooey Deschanel’s character, Jess Day, moving in with three single men after a failed relationship is back with a bang! Watch the crew deal with love, friendship and everything else life throws at them in hilarious ways. Catch new episodes from season 2 on Star World.

Watch

With an all star cast including Kirsten Dunst and James Marsden, Bachelorette is a dark comedy about how lifelong friends deal with the first one that gets married in the group. Watch the group of women try to help plan a wedding and get plunged into endless disasters.

These days, countless writers represent Muslims in a post-colonial dimension. But back in 1924, E M Forster became the first English novelist to portray a Muslim as the main protagonist in a novel that became a cult classic By Tausif Sanzum The beauty of “A Passage to India” lies mainly in the depiction of the fictional city of Chandrapore in British India, where Forster creates a world in which Muslims and Hindus live in harmony. The premise of the story is that a young English school mistress, Adela Quested, comes to India along with her future mother-in-law to visit her fiance, who is posted in India. Here they meet Dr Aziz, a Muslim physician widower, who befriends these English women as they seem different and friendly compared to other English settlers. Aziz volunteers to take them exploring in the famous caves of Chandrapore. Here, after a series of chaotic events, Adela accuses Aziz of attempting to rape her. The rest of the book deals with the tension this accusation creates between the British and the Indians. The court room trial brings the Muslims and Hindus together rooting for Aziz’s innocence. Forster succeeds to a great extent in creating the peaceful atmosphere of the Islamic month Muharam, which brings together people of various religions. However, he falls into

the trap of European ideology when portraying the caves of Chandrapore as mystical and exotic. The most intriguing part of the story, which can raise a lot of debate, is when Forster states that Indians, including Pakistanis and Bangladeshis at the time, can be friends with English people only when India has gained independence from them. One should note that Forster did change the climax of the book twice, with the present one being a revised version with a more positive ending that depicts the writer’s own confusion regarding the position of Indians in British India. Another interesting fact is that the friendship between Dr Aziz and Professor Fielding, another English character, is based on the real life friendship between Forster and an Indian man. There are some books we read and forget, a few others we cherish, and those rare ones that arouse debate. “A Passage to India” is one such novel that allows avid readers to indulge in a

productive debate.

Be creative on the go

A second chance

Here’s a beautiful app for the designers By Mahmood Hossain In fact, Briefscase is an ideal smartphone app for the professionals that have demanding clients. With people always on the move in the modern world, it becomes difficult to schedule sit-ins with clients. To cut down on the back and forth meetings, this app allows you to create a “brief” that lets your clients play with your designs after you hand them over. Your clients can then easily provide their feedback and apply alterations to the designs if necessary. Each file can be quickly accessed through all iOS devices. The wonderful bit about this is that each mock-up can be fitted to each version and can adapt

Sony has no intention of losing the battle in any category By Mahmood Hossain The company has recently introduced the SmartWatch 2. From smartphones to smart watches, the latest from Sony follows the recent design theme. The squarish frame and slightly rounded corners seem to be the signature for 2013. The SmartWatch 2 comes with a removable 24mm wristband, so colour coordinating with your outfit won’t be an issue. Apart from the aluminium body and design, the watch’s performance is an upgrade from the original. Like the original watch, it has a 1.6-inch touch screen display. However, the OLED screen is no more. SmartWatch 2 uses a translflective LCD panel with a resolution of 220x176 pixels. Believe it or not, this watch (like the Xperia Z smartphone) possesses waterresistant properties. In other words, if you accidently get contact with a spill or a slight splash, the watch will be perfectly fine. Just keep in mind, this

isn’t something you can go swimming with. Although this watch is a little larger than its predecessor at 23.5g, you really won’t feel the 8g difference. The device is also equipped with NFC and continues to run apps like Twitter and Facebook. Just because it’s a Sony smart watch

doesn’t mean it’s restricted to a Sony smart phone. The SmartWatch 2 basically works with any Android smartphone. And, of course, let’s not forget this is a watch after all. It does tell time in a few different displays. The watch is set to be available in the market by this September.

Wheels to screen sizes. From your iPhone to your iPad, every mock-up can be viewed in a single package allowing you to open and deliver easily on any device. Another magnificent feature of Briefscase is its ability to connect and animate your designs. With a

timeline of a collection of scenes, each frame displays the different stages of the design. It also allows the user to navigate throughout the specific design with a fluid transition, 60 frames per second to be exact. Now, that’s incredibly smooth. All in sync, you can simultaneously work on a single Brief in your iPad and iPhone. Viewing the same file in two different devices gives you the advantage of making the correct adjustments in different capacities. For those of you with a hectic schedule, this app is definitely worth downloading. Briefscase of iOS devices can be downloaded for free at the App Store, and Briefs for the Mac is available in the Mac App Store.

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander Three years after it was initially launched, the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander received its foremost update By Tahsin Momin On the outside, the Outlander received a more aggressive styling than its predecessors; changes included a new front end with a new hood, fenders and a front mesh grille. The inside included a new navigation system with real-time traffic and a hands-free link system that offers voice commands and audio streaming for MP3 players and cell phones. The Outlander is offered in three trim levels: ES, SE and XLS. The major differences between these setups are the drive train and the engine. While the ES and SE are driven by the efficient 2.4-litre 4-cylinder gasoline

engine with a CVT transmission which produces 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque, the XLS is powered by a more powerful 3.0-litre V6 engine with a six speed automatic transmission which produces a whopping 230 horsepower and 204 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from the 2.4-litre is more than adequate and is able to move the car from a standstill without feeling feeble. More power is always pleasant, but for many drivers, gas mileage is also key. The CVT transmission helps to smoothly deliver the power to the pavement, and for a sporting experience, the driver can use the steering mounted paddle shifters or

the shift lever mounted on the console to move through the gears for more lively performance and keep the engine on the edge. Once you enter the Outlander’s cabin, your eyes will light up with the attractive design that features a softtouch dash board cluster and door trim with striking double stitch accents. Standard features on all Outlanders are ABS brakes, Active Stability Control and Traction Control. All it takes is a test drive of the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander to realise that crossover SUVs can indeed be fun to drive. The car’s features sum up to produce a driving experience that is above your average crossover.

A simple and subtle approach into the new venture shows they have a solid foot on the correct path. The bold colours and traditionally placed patterns are the case for their first collection. Porcelain serenity Admit it or not, bathrooms are one of the most intimate spaces of our daily lives. Whether shared or exclusively owned, we end up spending an inordinate amount of time in these tiny spaces By MK Aaref In terms of functionality, size does not matter. A lot of things can be put into a bathroom, provided its execution is properly planned. Nowadays, I see too many toilets in newly built apartments

Horoscope

where the open shower is right in the middle of the room. Taking a shower means splashing the entire floor with water, which results in water spots everywhere, a nightmarish cleaning scenario. If you have such a bathroom, hang a circular curtain rod around the shower and get waterproof curtains to match. The floor may still get wet but at least you’ll be spared the excess moisture and water spots. Personally, I detest seeing cleaning supplies exposed in their full glory in toilets, carelessly put on shelves or underneath the sink. Either have them stored elsewhere, or put them inside a cabinet with doors.

M K Aaref is a trained architect and have been in practice for the past 25 years. His practice have included residences, retail and office spaces, and hospitality related spaces.

Tip

Remember, vinegar is excellent for removing water spots from all kinds of surfaces

Lighting seems to play a second fiddle when it comes to toilets. There should be at least two light sources in a bathroom: one above the sink, to accommodate such close calls as shaving and putting on makeup, and the other to light up the rest of the area. If there is a separate bathtub/ shower enclosure, it helps to have one in that area as well

bring in the substitute

Session

It becomes a very boring pattern to always buy the same style of clothing for a particular event. While we are well into Ramadan, the first thing men will go out to buy is a kurta. Normal, right? Photo: Big Stock

What most men don’t know is for the devoted night of prayer, or for iftar dates with family and friends, there has always been a suitable and elegant substitution. The achkan for men – a knee-length jacket – is a perfect example of taking your look to the next level. For a little more flair in design and cut, the angrakha style is a winner for this month. Even something as simple as an open-waist coat can appropriately mix things up. It’s understandable for you to keep things lighter in the warm weather, so try anything that will get you through the day. From extravagance to a subtle statement, trying out something new never hurt anyone. If anything, it results in more compliments being thrown your way. A kurta may be a go-to item on a regular basis, but how many times does Eid come around every year? Make that extra effort, and invest in something carried in magnificent quality.

Q: My wife is always complaining about how my half of the closet looks like a mess. Do I have to update my wardrobe to complement hers?

The items mentioned can be found in stores like Manyavar and Vasavi

Photo: Big Stock

A: A very good topic, this is actually quite the quick fix. This may seem symptomatic of OCD, but you should try colour-coding the entire closet. Yes, it’ll take some time, but the end result is going to look magnificent. When it comes to style, we tend to forget the smallest details. It’s fascinating what simple colour grouping can do for an overall look. Put all your whites together, and gradually move across the spectrum, left to right. There’s no need to get rid of your entire collection of clothes, my friend. Something so drastic should always be avoided.

In Fashion

The occassional look

Different occasions call for different looks. Here’s a brief walk-through of how to prepare for each occasion. •Formal : This one is a no-brainer. Traditionally, men go for the suit or the local dress, such as the kurta. For the western look, the tie is on and you’re ready to look your best. No real flexibility here when it comes to the outfit. It’s classy, the most sophisticated look you will ever have. •Semiformal : Keep one thing in mind: semiformal is still formal; it just lessens the weight on your look. Don’t

Dresscode Photo: Big Stock

In recent times, there have been plenty of different events for men to attend. It’s no longer just about weddings or business meetings

go all casual or present yourself in an informal manner. Many events call for this dress code, where it’s acceptable to show up without a tie. Your shoes can even switch from something dressy to something a bit more comfortable. Just remember not to compromise on quality. And an evening event always calls for a dark suit. •Cocktail: The ladies aren’t alone in this occasion. Not to worry, this one is very simple. Wear a dark suit, but add the extra effort in creativity. You can make the outfit playful as long as it’s not flashy or loud and remains a darker tone.

•Casual: This one is all about dressing down. That doesn’t mean you should show up with flip-flops. Please, do not make that cardinal sin in style. Substitute a suit jacket or blazer with, for example, a leather jacket. Never forget to pair your dressy jeans or trousers with comfortable and trendy shoes.

Q: I’m a very sports orientated kind of guy, which my friends have a problem with. They say I am a walking sports brand billboard. Is there anything wrong with wearing jerseys and team shirts? A: There’s nothing wrong with wearing your favourite team’s shirt to show support, but there’s a time and place for wearing such things. You can’t be heading out your door always wearing a jersey and a pair of jeans. Assuming you’re a grown man, you should be aware that rooting for your favourite team at home is completely different from going to a nonsporting event. No one is telling you to throw on a suit or shirt and tie. All you need to do is update your wardrobe with casual clothes that don’t represent your team’s colours.

Style Tip If you are unsure of what to wear to an event, find out (ask anyone you can) what type of event it is and what dress code it may be asking for

The braid - forever in style A braid, also called a plait, is a complex structure or pattern formed by intertwining three or more hair strands By Su Jorgensen Su Jorgensen is a hairstylist and colour technician from New Zealand with over 20 years of international experience which includes: teaching for Wella, Goldwell and Redken, working on fashion editorials in different platforms such as television and running a successful boutique salon in London’s trendy East End. She has extensive knowledge of trichology, the science of hair and scalps.

Hair braiding has long been thought to have originated in East Africa. The oldest known image of hair braiding was traced back to a burial site located on the Nile during the first dynasty of Pharaoh Menes. It was a means of communication, so that at a glance, one individual could distinguish a wealth of information about another – whether they were married, mourning, or of age for courtship – simply by observing their hairstyle. Certain hairstyles were distinctive of particular tribes or nations. Other styles spoke of an individual’s status in society (it’s interesting how we still judge people according to their hairstyles!) Braiding is traditionally a social art. It began with the age-old tradition of being passed down from elders

to their next generations through practic. Because of the time it takes to braid hair, women took time to socialise while braiding and having their hair done.

Since the 40s, braiding hair has become very trendy. Braids can be used to keep long hair neat and off the face, assist in taking away a fringe you’re growing out, add a fashionable hippy or retro twist to an outfit, or be turned into a formal hairstyle The best thing of all is that it is not a difficult look to achieve. There are so many variations to the braid and anything goes, so let’s get braiding, ladies! Even guys with long hair look good with a braid!

Glow on! Light up your face with the perfect highlighter By Tilat Khayer

Pro Tip

Ever wondered how to get that glowing, ethereal skin that you see on celebrities? Well, with the right products and proper know-how, you can create that “lit-from-within glow” within a matter of minutes! Highlighter is one such product that can completely transform your face. With an appropriately placed swipe, a highlighter can perk up your complexion, accentuate the features you love and minimise the dark circles under your eyes. Also known as “luminisers,” highlighters come in many different forms, from cream to liquid to powder. As these are available in many different shades and finishes, deciding which highlighter is right for you can be quite a daunting task. When choosing the right shade of highlighter for yourself, you have to think about the undertone of your skin. You don’t want to look shiny or glittery. The goal should be to get a reflective dewy look that makes you look as if you have just moisturised your skin. When working with Asian skin tones, I tend to go with a gold-based shimmer that’s more on the warmer side. One of my favourites is the Benefit’s Moon Beam that lends a glowy, not glittery,

finish to the olive skin tones. Georgio Armani’s Fluid Sheer also gives a sun-kissed glow to darker skin tones. For the paler skin tone, I would recommend a silvery or champagne coloured shade, like the High Beam, another fantastic product from Benefit. MAC Strobe Cream is my all-time favourite, as it works for a wide range of skin tones because of its multicoloured mica pearl pigment.

The high planes of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose and your Cupid’s bow are the main areas where the highlighter needs to be applied. When applying it to your cheeks, blend into the highest points of your cheekbones and up towards your temple. This is especially important if you’re doing any contouring, as it will draw attention away from the darker shadows and help you get the most definition. When applying it to the bridge of the nose, be careful not to apply it all the way to the tip, as it will come out shiny in photographs. Before applying your lipstick, add some highlighter to the Cupid’s bow and underneath the bottom lip. This will give the illusion of a fuller lip. For an everyday, natural application, simply mixing it into your tinted moisturiser or foundation will give you a radiant glow: This technique is simple enough for everyday use, especially if you want people to think you have a naturally beautiful and dewy skin.

A great trick is to apply a creamy highlighter over foundation, and then go over it with a powder highlighter like Mac’s Silver Dusk for the dewy finish and a fresh-faced glow Tilat Khayer is an international make-up artist, who has worked with celebrities at London Fashion Week and Britain’s Next Top Model. &feasting Once the joy of eating at home wears out and the monotony of a repetitive home menu kicks in, most of us are left feeling the need to step out of our familiar cocoons and try the exciting iftar offerings around town. Whether it’s the alluring billboard ads of steaming hot haleem, or the beckoning calls of the “all you can eat” buffets, the endless offers tempt us to try out everything. However, often times the “all you can eat” bargains are such that despite trying to get your money’s worth, it’s difficult to chow down the downright terrible food they call iftar. Tell Letters to Mars

Letters to Venus

Obscure desires

I’m a 37-year-old married banker, and my wife has been away on a UN mission for a year. We have one child, a five-year-old son. Since his mother has been away, my single cousin has been living with us, helping raise my son. Somewhere along the line, we fell in love. I truly respect her, and don’t want her to feel like the third person in our relationship. I want to give her the place of my wife, but I know society will never accept it. She is a great homemaker and treats my child as her own. What should I do?

Loving aggression?

I’m a 27-year-old woman in a relationship for the last three years with a 24-year-old man. He’s young, upbeat and very playful. During intimate moments he affectionately tickles me and plays around, but that “playfulness” sometimes borders on aggression. The last two times he hit me across the face in one of his “playful” fervours. It really hurt, but he just kept laughing as if nothing happened. This is scaring me. What is wrong with him? N

First of all, talk to your wife. Is she really interested in you? Any wife knows that too long apart is a recipe for "out of sight, out of mind." She herself may not be interested in carrying on the marriage. If that is the case, you can part as friends and be the best of parents to your child. Society? Yes, we need to keep in mind that we have to respect society, but this is your life, and if you can be a good parent to your child and a friend to your ex-wife, that is all that matters.

Our Agony Aunt is a life coach, a relationship coach, as well as a corporate and organisational consultant. AA lives and works in Bangladesh but travels extensively around the world to give seminars, to see her clients, as well as counsel them on Skype. AA is also a ghostwriter for a renowned American magazine.

Painful love? There is a little aggression in his love. Talk to him about not only the physical pain, but also the psychological discomfort during a quiet time (it is never a good idea to talk about irritating or painful things in the heat of the moment.) If he does not take notice of your feelings, there is little you can do, as it is clear he cannot hear

your discomfort. On the other hand, if he shows understanding, you can create a little code, like a sweet play word you decide on together that you can say when he goes too far and you want him to stop. If after trying it for a few days he does not stop, then stop seeing him. If he does not hear you now, he will not hear you later!

Forgiving and forgetting 1)I’m a 25-year-old man working at an advertising agency. Ever since I was a young boy, my parents ingrained in me the belief that I am incapable of doing anything right with myself. The slightest mistake on my part would drive them into a mad frenzy, and they would unleash their anger in the form of beatings that would leave me bruised for days. They stopped sending me to school after sixth grade, and always left me feeling unloved and unworthy. However, now that I’ve somehow found a job and am successful, they mollycoddle me and have high expectations from me. Deep down, I know they’ll treat me the way they used to if I have a downfall. Despite everything that has happened, I cannot get myself to forgive them. Is there any way I can get over the trauma of the past 25 years? K Dear K, A countless number of children have been discouraged “for their own good.” Some parents never praise their children, but rather point out what’s wrong with

AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U LY 1 8 , 2013

them to “encourage” them to improve. This treatment results in a very insecure person who believes she or he is never good enough. Compassion is key: compassion means understanding what happened and letting it go. Some parents criticise because that is all they know, as they were raised in the same way. For some parents, the more their self worth depends on their child’s performance, the more they manipulate their children through negative encouragement. How can you forgive your parents? 1 Understand that if they knew any better, they would have done better. 2 The more you carry your pain, the more you suffer. Be lovingly selfish, look after yourself, and let go of injuries. After all, would you constantly pick on a wound? Of course not. You would try to let it heal, not open it up. Do the same with your pain. 3 Develop an inner talk with yourself: “I am good. I am learning to like who I am, just as I am.” 4. Every time you think of your parents,

breathe out any painful thoughts and replace them with these words: “They did not know any better. Now, it’s up to me to let go of what bothers me about them. Even if they knew what they were doing, I want to let it go, as holding grudges will not lead me to happiness. I

now must look after my own happiness without blaming anyone else, because blame keeps me powerless. I cannot change my parents, but I can change myself and the way I see them.”

Health

Fight stress with food Balancing your pH is the number one, most important step in achieving vibrant, radiant health By Auronee Islam What exactly is pH? pH is a measurement of acidity or alkalinity. The pH scale runs from 0-14, with 7 being neutral. Most experts agree that ideal health exists when the pH of general body fluids is around 7 or slightly above. Therefore, the first step in maintaining health is to alkalise the body by adopting an alkaline diet! Here are some tips that will help balance the pH of your body: fFruits: This may come as a surprise, as fruits are considered acid-forming due to their high sugar content; however, in moderation, fruits are a fine part of a balanced diet.

fSoy and soy sauce: Soy sauce, miso, tamari and all other fermented foods are acid-forming. This does not apply to the unfermented versions, however. Soy sauce and tofu are alright to consume as part of your 20% mildly acidic foods.

fTea and coffee: Tea and coffee are acid-forming, so if you need to cut them from your diet, look for substitutes. All

fCitrus fruits: There are a few exceptions when intuition goes out the window. An obvious example would be the fact that lemons and limes are actually very alkaline! This is because they have a high alkaline mineral content and almost no sugar; thus producing an alkaline effect on the body once consumed. The same goes for tomatoes.

herbal teas are alkaline (except for the very fruity ones and green tea, which contains nearly as much caffeine as coffee.) Rooibos (Redbush) tea is a fantastic, antioxidant rich alternative to coffee and tea. fBread: Bread is a tough one for many people, as it is a staple in our daily diet. Try sprouted breads, which are mildly alkaline. If these are hard to find, go for wraps instead of sandwiches, and look for yeast-free or gluten-free varieties. Hydration: Staying properly hydrated is probably the most important element of the alkaline diet. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to keep your pH in check. Of course, over-consuming or fully banning any type of food is not recommended. Moderation is the key to BALANCE and harmonious health! Tap your INNER energy! “It’s important to realise that the inner world is bigger than the outer one” By Sanjida Afrin Tina People today are more frequently disillusioned with their own lives. They look up to people who are successful and rich and realise that they are, in fact, unhappy or have lost their purpose in life. They do not like the strong emotional reactions, which they have no control over. So before they perceive a completely wrong picture of an ideal life, they may lose the meaning in reality. We try here to help you tap your inner energy to connect, reconnect and understand yourself better. To develop spiritual consciousness, follow the simple steps: fTHINK POSITIVE It’s important to direct your thoughts in a positive way. Maintain an unbiased, open, unprejudiced point of view and this can be a major step forward in growth. And remember, just because others may think differently from the way you do, does not necessarily mean that either is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. So listen, learn and let go of your ego for a moment.

fSEEK HAPPINESS Finding joy in life can prompt spiritual growth. It provides assurance, serves as a healing agent and is reciprocal too. The joy we express is often felt and shared by others, and at the same time returns to us in abundance. fA LITTLE PRAYER Inner faculties can be awakened in more ways than you can imagine and one of the simplest ways to spiritualise your consciousness is by praying. In the process, you often make better decisions, and in return become more productive in different ways. You also become less resentful, more understanding, and forgiveness comes easily to you. fAIM HIGH Having a purpose in life empowers your thoughts, feelings and actions towards greater accomplishments. Interesting possibilities may be explored in the quest for a specific goal that provides valuable knowledge and experiences. Photos: Big Stock

Tom Yumm Crunch Chicken

KFC’s timeline began with the introduction of the stir-fried Thai chicken, the hot zinger burger, the curry chicken and finally, the Tom Yum crunch chicken By Anita N Amreen

While the curry chicken gave KFC’s regular chicken an interesting twist, I was both excited and slightly apprehensive about its Tom Yum twin. Would the tang and spice of the Tom Yum give the chicken a favourable twist? Or would the overpowering spices detract from the deliciousness of the original KFC chicken? Only a tasting would tell. Priced at around Tk250 for two pieces of chicken, the meal's portion sizes were surprisingly generous. One massive piece was accompanied by a slightly smaller twin. At first glance, it looked like the average KFC chicken, until I noticed the sprinkled seasoning of the Tom Yum peeping out of its crinkled folds. With the very first bite, one thing was for sure: the Tom Yum chicken was definitely destined to be a fragrant adventure for food enthusiasts. The skin was crisp, crunchy and light, a combination so inviting I couldn’t help but continue to dig in. The aromatic spices were ever-present, yet never overbearing. The chicken itself was succulent, flavoursome and full of the explosive flavours of Tom Yum. The hot and sour flavours at play did everything in their way to tickle my taste buds and leave me utterly sated. This chicken is definitely a must-have for those who prefer the fiery combo of Thai spices and crispy fried chicken.

Mummy Diaries

Cravings all over the place! As the months roll by, different feelings set in. Every month is different. My doctor strongly advised me to limit my movement, and I hate that, but I have to be careful. With no work and no going out, I am stuck in bed rest and confined to my house, except for occasional runs to the store or my mom’s place. At home, I basically watch TV, mostly Hindi serials that I got around to catching up on and became hooked on again. What else is there to do? Read most of the baby books, surfed the internet, and bugged people at work through chat. Alone time is driving me nuts. Sometimes I get a rush to do things for which I have no energy, and other times I feel like a big, fat (mentally) potato couch. I don’t feel like nesting, cleaning

my wardrobe, resetting my living room, or changing the curtains. Then come the food cravings. My hubby was lucky I didn’t make him drive in the middle of the night for an ice-cream like Preity Zinta in “Salaam Namaste,” but I was close enough. I wanted cold chicken sandwiches! That is all I could think about for a while, so my sister had to make them at home, a whole big box of them that I could munch on whenever I wanted. My mother wouldn’t allow me to have food from outside, especially not sandwiches, that was a complete no-no! The occasional need for ice cream would rise too. That was not so hard to get, just a run to Club Gelato or Movenpick would do the trick.

Comilla

Comilla stands on the banks of the Gumti River, purportedly situated halfway between the capital city of Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong. It is a town blessed with the memoirs of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, with memorial plates dedicated to him. Poet Rabindranath Tagore visited Comilla a few times, and it has been said that much of his poetry was written on the banks of the Gumti River. Filled with age-old ruins of a once great civilisation, this town is rich in both culture and heritage By Farah K Iqbal AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U LY 1 8 , 2013

What to do Comilla can be considered the Mecca of Buddhists. The town has the largest group of viharas, where each and every ruin has some historic relevance to Buddhism. Starting off with a trek to the top of a hill to visit the 600-yearold Lalmai Hindu Temple, visitors should then attempt to conquer all of the viharas in their itinerary once they reach the town. A famous 18th century ruler constructed the Shalbon Vihara, notably the biggest vihara among the group. Next up should be the Rupban Mura Vihara and the Koutillo Mura Vihara, both equally important to disciples. The Moinamoti Queen’s Palace is also a sacred Buddhist vihara, but has affectionately been christened “Queen’s Palace” by the locals. Your trip should not end before visiting the WWII Cemetery, quite close to the Queen’s Palace, filled with the graves of thousands of soldiers from around the world.

What to eat When hearing the word Comilla, rasmalai is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Without a doubt, Highway Inn is the best place to get this town’s delicious rasmalai and beloved pera. Both sweets there have unique flavours missing from even the best sweetshops anywhere else in the country. For a light lunch in Comilla, Silverspoon is the place to go to indulge in a lavish assortment of bhorta and the bhaji. After visiting the historic sites throughout the town, the smell of the basmati rice being cooked in this restaurant is bound to lure you inside.
