Khaled Hosseini, author of And the Mountains Echoed the stories span time from the 1950s until 2010. The decades leap beyond Afghanistan to France, America and other places. The book revolves the wide range of sensitivity and more emotionally complex twist of relationship.
To all his fans, his songs reflect perfection in the simplest of senses because of his ability to portray the purity and eloquence of the human mind. To most of his ex-girlfriends, he is the heartbreaker who got away. And to the music lovers who never bothered to add more of his songs to their playlists, he is still the hopeless lover boy singing about his sweetheart’s “porcelain skin” and “bubblegum tongue”. He is none other than John Mayer. After the release of his fourth studio album, “Battle Studies,” Mayer went into a two-year long hiatus before coming back to record his fifth and latest album, “Born and Raised.” The album was released on May 22 last year, and within the first week of its release, 219,000 copies were sold. In short, “Born and Raised” is not a typical Mayer album that deals with heartbreaks and love, but is instead a reflection of Mayer’s life. When the Berklee dropout first started his career, his compositions and skills, along with his carefree attitude and his way with the ladies, earned him quite the recognition worldwide. However, over the years, his ways have gained him scornful remarks from certain ex-lovers. Mayer realised that the big city life and fame were getting

the better of him, and decided it was time to take a step back. “Born and Raised” voices his feelings about the pressures of his former city life, as well as his admittance that fame and fortune managed to partly corrupt him. Through the album, he apologises to certain people he hurt in the past, and hopes to show them he is a better person. “Born and Raised” focuses on the acoustic sounds of Mayer’s former work, along with a new element of country/folk music he adds in his own style. In terms of music, Mayer got everything right. He experimented with genres, kept the overall tunes simple and melodious and let his lyrics harmonise brilliantly with the tunes. “Born and Raised” is proof that no matter how troubled a good artiste can get with his personal life, he will always bounce back for his passion of the art. It’s human nature to learn

Filled with honesty, the album stands to show how much Mayer has matured as a musician and a person. “Born and Raised” has the perfect tunes for the cool, drizzly weather, so grab your copy of the album from any local CD store as soon as possible!

Samsung’s new note In a tech world of mobility and speed, Samsung keeps on with the full-court press
The new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has finally hit Bangladesh’s market, and it’s nothing less than Samsung’s best tablet yet. The eight-inch display is by far the best looking tablet screen to date, and at 0.3kg, it’s actually comfortable to hold. Samsung has also decided to give the Note 8 the ability to use the S Pen, which is possibly the most exciting bit of this new tablet. Whether you are writing or drawing, each line is presented in a brilliantly smooth fashion. It can even make chicken scratch readable. The 1.6GHz processor is highly responsive in fluid motion, and with its 2GB RAM, it makes multitasking easy. Let’s not forget this tablet also makes calls. In the process of multitasking, you will never have to hang up a call to make certain choices. There are plenty of more features inside the new device. You’ll just have to see it for yourself.

Designed by Victoria Beckham, the Evoque is a luxury Crossover SUV aimed toward luxury lifestyle offroading. The Evoque reinterprets the classic Range Rover recipe with a transformed sense of styling. Unlike all the other Range Rovers, the Evoque does not seem to have the muscular lines. With its curvy lines flowing from the front to the rear in a unique harmony, one would think it might not look tough or off roady even though being covered in Range Rover badges. The Evoque uses a massive separate chassis and has no low range gearbox.,but has an electronic off road terrain response system which adjusts the suspensions, traction,
torque and output power according to the particular terrain. It also means that the Evoque does not have the high revving V8. It is powered by a 2.2L inline-4 cylinder turbo diesel, which produces an adequate 187HP. The Duratorq engine in the Evoque

The ride comfort in the Evoque is superb thanks to the Magnetorheological dampers, which are more responsive then the traditional dampers. The interior is no exception either. Built from the finest material available to mankind, its cabin is the most well made in the class. The Evoque comes standard with an 8-inch, touch-screen stereo, two USB ports, an auxiliary input jack, Bluetooth and an 11-speaker Meridian sound system. Optional features include a navigation system, 360-degree surround camera, rearseat entertainment system, satellite radio and HD radio. Three’s a crowd Well, I personally do not believe that there can be friendship between people of the opposite sex. When one of the “friends” is in a relationship, it always ends badly. I believe in friendship, of course, but intimate discussions and “meeting for coffee” between people of the opposite sex, when one or both are in a relationship, is a recipe for disaster. Many of my clients object to this belief, yet they are my clients precisely because they are in trouble for the reason above. What to do? You politely ask your girlfriend to stop seeing that friend and refrain from discussing your relationship with him. I would, however, revise your relationship and see what is really not working. Often, this situation is the symptom of something brewing.

I’m a 27-year-old man in a relationship for the past four years with K. Despite our ups and downs, K and I have had an excellent relationship so far. The only glitch is M, this common friend we have. She was introduced to him through me and now states that he’s one of her “good friends.” What I don’t like about this situation is the fact that she constantly discusses our relationship with him. For this very reason we even broke up once. She still talks to him, and I don’t like it. How can I make her stop? Frustrated

S my dear, The worst thing we can do is to make people feel their feelings are wrong. However, wrong people are right in the way they feel. THESE ARE THEIR FEELINGS, and proving them wrong makes them feel unheard, isolated and unloved.
Broken Dear AA, I thought I had the most beautiful love life: a man who adored me and could not be without me. He left me five months ago, and since then my life has come to a stop. I cannot eat, sleep, work or function. I have gotten rid of his things, put away his presents, and stopped listening to the music we loved. I stopped going to the park, seeing common friends, and even changed the roads I use, but none of this rids him from my memory. He is more alive in me than ever, and I don’t know what to do. Does one ever recover from such pain? Desperate in Dhaka
You can use expressions like: a)“I can understand you feel this way/ If I were in your shoes I probably would feel this way. However, we need to understand where our son/your father is coming from and see how he sees things.” b)“The fact is our son/your father will always be in our life, so we need to see why he thinks this way. It will not make him right, it will only mean that you understand how he interprets your behaviour. You will know what makes him feel uncomfortable and why he reacts like this.” c)“We all make mistakes and misunderstand each other.” d)“Forgive his misunderstandings, let them go. Do not hang onto anger, it will only make him and, more importantly, you feel more isolated and misunderstood.” e)“Forgiveness means letting go of
Yes my dear, eventually one does. Your approach does not seem to be working very well. You could try to do exactly the opposite: desensitise yourself. Listen to the songs you used to love together a thousand times, as to make the meaning of those songs anonymous and meaningless. Use the presents he gave you. What you must do is give any point of reference to your boyfriend an insignificant meaning. Have you noticed that if you wear a favourite dress all the time, it ceases to be something special? Well, I want you to do exactly that: go to the park, take the same roads, reconnect with your friends, wear what he gave you and go to the restaurants you used to go together. Basically, take the old “vibrations” and give new ones to the everyday activities. At the beginning, it will be painful, but once you have the courage to start this process, you will see how much easier life will be for you, and life will begin again. Take courage, most of us went through this and we all survived it! things that churn badly in your stomach and keep you awake at night.” f)“Your father/your son will always be your father/son; accept his imperfections and love what YOU can love about HIM.” Our Agony Aunt is a life coach, a relationship coach, as well as a corporate and organisational consultant. AA lives and works in Bangladesh but travels extensively around the world to give seminars, to see her clients, as well as counsel them on Skype. AA is also a ghostwriter for a renowned American magazine.

Along came single fatherhood They lived happily ever after: father, mother and child. At one point or the other, all of us dream of living "happily ever after." Unfortunately, reality and dreams are two separate entities. If fate strikes and happy couples separate or lose one another, each partner receives a rude awakening from the dream of a perfect life Photo: Big Stock
By Tausif Sanzum Separation is never pleasant to deal with, and things get even more complicated if a child is involved. In fact, the degree of complication is directly proportional to the age of the child. In case of a legal separation, the mother usually gets custody of the child based on the universal belief that the child will adapt better with a mother than a father. Despite this widespread belief, there exists a huge number of single dads around the world. Single dads face many challenges similar to those of single mothers. Whether raising a boy or a girl, the main problem a single father faces is that he doesn't get reduced working hours or child support. He also faces gender based problems such as dealing with female puberty and getting his daughter comfortable to discuss her problems with him. Furthermore, women are usually more emotionally expressive than men, and so provide
better emotional support towards their children, whose lives change drastically when they lose a parent. If you are a single father, the best strategy for you is to set priorities. Your main priority should be your child: what is best for the child, how to make him/her more comfortable with the changes, and how to make up for the missing part in his/her life. Then comes the question of money. While you want to provide your child with the best possible living standards, money curtails the extent to which those standards can be met. Balancing a job and a child acts as a huge challenge, and most of the time hiring trustworthy help becomes a must. It is best to opt for a job that provides you ample time to spend with your child, especially during the initial period of single parenthood. While an affluent single father has the advantage of money to help him raise
his child, fatherhood requires much more than just that. Money makes it possible to provide a luxurious lifestyle for your child, but how your child grows up directly depends upon how you shape his lifestyle. Otherwise, he/ she will end up growing into a rich, spoiled brat. While financial stability is essential to good fatherhood, emotional support and a loving environment are just as important in raising your child. Getting into a new relationship is a big step for any single father. If you are planning to start a relationship, discuss it with your child and listen to his/her feelings about you moving on. Make sure to choose someone whose interests match those of your child to prevent clashes in the future. This is a prominent decision which cannot be dealt with lightly under any circumstances, as it affects the present and future of everyone concerned.
Raising a child single-handedly is never easy. It requires a lot of patience, and single fathers are expected to spend a lot of time with their children, as well as at work making money for their families. The option of finding a future partner becomes limited, not to mention the sleepless nights spent taking care of the child, in case of toddlers. As a single father, you might tear your hair out in frustration at times and ask yourself whether all the trouble is worth it. The answer might not be available to you right there and then, but over a period of time, your frustration will be replaced by an inexplicable feeling of pride at seeing the child you raised transform into an active adult. That priceless feeling will make up for all the sacrifices and sleepless nights that went into bringing up your child.

WTF returns It's hard to deny the fact that Facebook has pioneered a number of trends in our everchanging sociocultural structure. Simultaneously, this realm in cyberspace has heralded innovative methods of social networking and interaction By Abeer Haruni Facebook has greatly facilitated the meeting of likeminded people and the opportunity to share creativity, and is also used to organise demonstrations and events. The field of business and brand marketing are not beyond the scope of the "Facebook effect." Innovative, businessoriented minds in Bangladesh are not rare occurrences. One can complain of the lack of platforms in the country, but certainly not the lack of talents. Renaissance WTF is a pioneering platform in Bangladesh that provides the place for online brands and the je ne sais quoi shopping experience. No pun intended, WTF is rightly the "Way to
Fame" for brands pasturing the cyber grazing lands. This event is organised by Renaissance, a renowned institution that has been educating students in the English medium from standard 1 to A Levels since 2003. After receiving positive responses for its first season from June to August last year, WTF will inaugurate its second season on June 21. WTF's first season was a success saga for the cyber entrepreneurs. Hosted in the premise of Renaissance, House 33, Road 4 in Dhanmondi, the fair housed a total of 41 Facebook brands offering clothes, fashion accessories and a lot of other products. On average, each brand made sales of over Tk27,000 for a total
sale of Tk550,00, with the highest sale made being Tk180,000. The fair was hosted on five consecutive Fridays, giving shopaholics a delightful experience filled with shopping, food and fun. WTF Season 2, starting June 21, will continue to splash its vibrant colours every Friday till July 19. A new addition to this season is movies. The guests will now get cinematic flavours combined with the shopping main course. The fair will take place in Renaissance and is scheduled to remain open from 10am till 9pm with no ticket requirements. The event director of Renaissance WTF, Ahmed Tausif Saad, expressed his great optimism for this season. Saad said: "This
WTF will be a greater success than the debut one." Heralding to the Facebook phenomenon, he humoured WTF Season 2 saying: This event will certainly be the profile picture destination." With Eid festivities blooming soon, the return of WTF is an event of excitement. Further information regarding the event can be accessed through Facebook. It is certainly a viable platform for budding entrepreneurs and undoubtedly a different vogue of shopping synthesising online brands and real life.

Y Work with what you have. Go into your closet and use the suits you already own Y A light grey suit jacket goes well with black suit trousers. This combination is a perfect example of one piece complementing the other Y Keep things simple. Don’t go crazy with pinstripe trousers and a windowpane checked suit jacket. Solid colours work best Y If you must use a patterned item, always combine it with a solid colour Y Remember, it’s not just the jacket and trousers. Always keep in mind you’re working with an entire look. Dress shirt, socks, belts, ties, etc have to be considered Y Make sure the fabric of each item is of similar kind. Wool and cotton may go together, but it’s a different effect altogether if there’s polyester in the
mix. And for the love of God, avoid polyester. It’s summer, you don’t want your sweat to be trapped Putting all the pieces together is a quick way to impress the next time you head off to work or an event. People will be so busy ogling and complimenting your new look that they’ll be aloof to the fact you’ve worn those items before. Keep this up and folks will start asking: “How often do you goshopping? Do you have a personal shopper I don’t know about?”

Before knotting one around your neck, there are a few rules to consider. 1. Skinny ties aren’t for everyone. If you are of a larger build, consider yourself segregated from this style. Stick to wider ties (not too wide) and wider lapels 2. These look better with one button or two button suits. Anything more will throw off the look altogether 3. Widely spread collars should be
avoided. Your shirt collars serve as a frame to the tie, and a skinny tie is always in a smaller knot. The four-inhand knot works best 4. Stick to modern designs. Solids are always the best bet, along with stripes and checks to liven things up. But there is always a vintage piece somewhere that can adapt to a more modern look You can find knitted and silk slim/skinny ties in stores like Yellow for around Tk1,200.
Q: I see how men in places like Europe wear loud colours and look really good in them, but it’s hard to do the same in Bangladesh. How is it possible to pull something off like that here? A: The biggest issue here is that men simply do not know how to pull this look off. There are many things to consider, like skin tone, body shape, grooming habits, how the clothes fit, etc. When wearing bold colours, the outfit has to have contrast and strike a balance. With confidence, a clean-cut hairdo and a shaven face may enhance the look. Sometimes, just a single statement piece says enough, so there’s no need to go overboard. If orange doesn’t look good on you, don’t wear it. There are many loud colours that will fit the bill, and getting the right look is simple trial and error.
Style Tip Regardless of the width of the tie, it must be the same width as your suit’s lapels. Skinny ties mean narrower lapels

Knitted or silk skinny ties remain the chicest choice in any season. We revisit the iconic style of “The Beatles” in the 50s – knitted narrow ties with a square bottom. Cotton and silk skinny ties were carried into the stylish 60s of the upscale sartorial scene

Q: Is it true we are not supposed to wear white socks with our dress shoes? A: You can wear all sorts of designs and coloured socks with your dress shoes, except white. White socks are only meant for athletic purposes. There’s a difference between bending a rule and completely violating it. Dress shoes require dress socks; there are no two ways about it. When you do decide to wear the correct coloured socks, make sure they match your trousers (dressy or casual) and not your shoes. Black pants mean black socks. Brown pants mean brown socks. Those are only the basics, of course. You are free to wear colours that serve as a complementary contrast to your trousers, like navy trousers with purple, polkadot socks. Keep in mind, if you are wearing navy trousers, you can wear both black and brown shoes, but the same can’t be said for black pants. We’ll save that discussion for another day.
In Fashion
A classic statement piece to an already sharp suit, the skinny tie is one vintagestyled item that will remain a staple in a gentleman’s wardrobe. While the knitted ties are mainly for the fall/winter months, you shouldn’t be discouraged from trying one out during the warmer days in brighter colours and patterns.

This season there’s an abundance of casual, eye-catching trousers and polo shirts, but what about the semi-formal/formal attire? Apart from linen being the go-to fabric, mixing things up is a fresh way to take on the hotter season. There’s no reason to spend extra on different coloured suits (well, if money is not an issue, go for it) For the gentlemen who have no extra time or money to spend, there’s a very easy way to bring out a whole new set of looks you thought you never had.

Truth about hair loss Su Jorgensen is a hairstylist and colour technician from New Zealand with over 20 years of international experience which includes: teaching for Wella, Goldwell and Redken, working on fashion editorials in different platforms such as television and running a successful boutique salon in London’s trendy East End. She has extensive knowledge of Trichology - the science of hair and scalps.
I’ve noticed since living here that the most common hair issue women have is hair loss. Hair advertisements are always showing women flicking their luscious manes around happily, making us feel that we must have the same hair to feel attractive. In fact, hair fall is a natural process that occurs whenever you wash your hair, regardless of the shampoo you use.You can lose up to the acceptable average of about 100 strands of hair per day without worrying. This does not constitute hair loss. Real hair loss is due to hereditary, hormonal and dietary factors By Su Jorgensen Five main causes of hair loss: l Stress l Diseases/illness and prolonged intake of medicine l Hormone (estrogen and androgen) imbalance l Post labour hormone fluctuation l Scalp infection due to diabetes, which is very common in South Asia
AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U N E 20, 201 3
Here are some other minor elements that may also cause hair loss, as well as ways to deal with them: Harsh chemical procedures such as chemical straightening: Make sure you do not get these procedures done more than twice a year, and be wary of leaving the chemicals on your hair for too long, as this will cause breakage.
Environmental hazards such as a harsh water supply and pollution: After shampooing and conditioning your hair, try to do a final rinse with your purified drinking water to remove the residue of unhealthy chemicals from your hair and scalp. Pollution problems: Make sure you protect your hair every day by using a leave-in styling conditioner or protective spray, and wash your hair with organic shampoos.* Overuse of technical appliances such as blow dryers, curling and straightening irons on high heat: Make sure that the irons are of high ceramic and titanium quality and are definitely NOT aluminum-plated!
If you blow dry and use straightening irons regularly, make sure you use a heat-protecting hair product.
Pulling hair back tightly every day, and sleeping with it pulled back, especially when wet:Don’t brush hair when wet, use a wide-tooth comb instead. Tips for hair growth: Maintain a healthy diet. Minimise fat and sugar intake, including artificial sodas, and eat plenty of leafy green veggies and proteins, such as tofu, nuts and pulses. Also, drink plenty of water. Get plenty of rest, exercise frequently and reduce stress. Moisturise the scalp and follicles by applying a hotoil hair treatment frequently, using healthy oils such as apricot, almond, avocado, sesame, coconut or olive oil. Add a few drops of aromatherapy oils such as basil, peppermint, bergamot or clary sage to stimulate the hair follicles and encourage hair growth. The best thing about this process is the head massage, which is relaxing and regenerating for the scalp, helps circulation and enables hair growth (some women come into our salon
every week just for that!) If you don't have any aromatherapy oils, use a vitamin E capsule with the carrier oil. Take vitamin supplements to boost hair growth such as vitamins B, C, D, E, beta carotene, magnesium and zinc.
Avoid heat styling: Trim dead ends regularly, every six to eight weeks. Brush hair from the bottom to prevent breakage.
The most important thing to remember is to love and look after your hair, and try not to stress too much about it, as that will just aggravate things.
Try looking in the mirror at yourself every morning, and as Oprah Winfrey and Louise Hay would recommend, repeat positive affirmations to yourself like: "Hello, lovely hair! I am sending you warm and loving vibes to grow back more beautifully than ever!"Our follicles are listening, ladies! *The truth about shampoos will be explained in my next article

The art of contouring
Tilat Khayer is an international make-up artist, who has worked with celebrities at London Fashion Week and Britain’s Next Top Model. Her brand Roshi operates in the UK and Bangladesh.
Contouring creates illusions, and can be used to create the illusion of balance and symmetry in the face. Contouring is the art of using shadows and highlights to sculpt, emphasise and accentuate our features. Even the most subtle form of contouring has the power to transform a face by creating a natural look without adding colour or make-up to it By Tilat Khayer The two main techniques we use for basic contouring are lowlighting and highlighting. Lowlighting refers to using a darker colour wherever there’s an area of the face or feature we want to play down. Highlighting is the exact opposite, and is used to emphasise and bring forward certain features of the face. The key point to remember here is that every area we lowlight on a face needs to be balanced with a highlight.
Nose There is a clever strategy used to slim down a relatively large/wide nose, but only to a certain extent. Using the same lowlight shade that we used for cheeks, we start shading at the inner corners of the brows and apply down either side of the nose. This is balanced by highlighting the bridge of the nose using a lighter shade and then blending the two tones together using a small brush.
Here we discuss how to do basic contouring for some of the prominent features of the face. Cheekbones This is the most frequent request I get from my female clients when doing their make-up! To create some killer cheekbones, we create a shadow under the cheekbone with a darker shade. This helps to create the shape of the face. This effect is countered by highlighting the area where the light would hit the bone, just above the cheekbone, thereby adding to the depth of the previously created shape.
Jawline To create a sharp jawline, we apply our darker shadow below the jaw and along the jawline, right where the jaw meets the neck. We then blend down into the neck using a clean brush, so as to eliminate any obvious lines.
Pro tips: Always use a matte shade when creating shadows. For achieving a natural contour look, this should be between two and three shades darker than your skin tone. You can use a matte or shimmer product to highlight, although for more mature skins, it is recommended that a matte shade be used, as shimmery products will accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. The level of blending you do will determine how natural the contouring looks. Always check from all angles of the face to ensure that there are no obvious streaks

La Mode If you’re looking for fashionable and high quality footwear, La Mode is the perfect choice for you. With all its products made in Bangladesh, La Mode grabbed the attention of all the stylish ladies without emptying their pockets. The CEO Fahim Shafiul Alam talks about his dream for this brand By Sabiha Akond Rupa. Photos by La Mode 1. How did you get into designing shoes? Who was the brainchild behind La mode? How has your journey been so far? Back in 2011, our Creative Head Fahmida Islam and I planned to open up our own lifestyle store. We ended up with the idea of selling shoes, and that was the beginning of La Mode. Both of us made the decision to stick with shoes, and it gave us immense pleasure to be the founders of La Mode. The best achievement so far has been our ability to create a market of footwear solely made in Bangladesh. 2. What difficulties have you faced while getting into this business? The hardest part of our journey was to achieve people’s trust and make them believe in our product. This was difficult mostly because people hardly believed that our product was made in Bangladesh. However, with our honest efforts and alluring designs, we were able to convince them to build trust in our product. This was a big challenge for us. 3. What was and is the inspiration behind your designs? Both traditional and ethnic motifs are the main inspiration behind our designs. 4. What is the creative process that goes behind making each pair of shoes? How do you design and make these shoes? Our aim is to make international standard footwear in our own fashion, and that in itself is a very difficult task. Our Creative Head Fahmida Islam is simply brilliant. She does all the designing for La Mode. The creative process begins with the raw paper designing, and with time it moves towards crafting using the proper assembly of materials.

8. Tell us something about your karigars. We love and respect our karigars like family. We believe in them like we would our own parents, and they love us like their own children, too. By the grace of Allah, La Mode ensures labour safety, work-based wages and a joyful work environment. 9. After the launch of each arrival, what sort of response do you usually receive? By the grace of Allah, we always receive a very positive response on every new arrival. 10. Why did you choose not to open a shop like other local shoe brands? Our office in Niketon has all the facilities that a shop needs. We never wanted to have a shop in a shopping complex or marketplace. But Insha’Allah, we would definitely like to expand our branches. 11. What makes your brand different than others in this business? What do you believe is your selling point? Hopefully, the designs.
5. While you design new footwear, what kind of material do you usually use? Based on the designs, we select the materials to be used for each pair. For instance, we use ethnic, handwoven fabric to create a traditional look, and imported material for a western look. 6. In your opinion, what are the ideal ingredients for perfect footwear? Is it the heel, the colour, or the way you walk that sets a shoe apart? From the point of view of a designer, the level of perfection in shoes mostly depend on proper shape and the comfort they provide to the wearer. A proper shape can turn all other elements, like the heels, the leather and the colours, into a masterpiece. 7. Do you have a team of designers, or do you work alone? No, we don’t have any other person in designing besides our CEO and Creative Head Fahmida Islam. But Insha’Allah, if we ever need anybody, we can expand our creative team in the future.
12. As you have set up your own individual shoe brand in Bangladesh, how far do you want to go with La Mode? Where do you see La Mode in 10 years? Insha’Allah, within 10 years La Mode will be globally accepted as a shoe brand, and we will proudly say: “Yes, these shoes are made in Bangladesh.”

Green curry chicken Green curry chicken has always been one of my favourite dishes. Every time I travel to Thailand, it’s the first dish on my list. This creamy curry has the hot spice of chillies, the mush of fresh eggplants and the richness of coconut milk. Not to forget the aroma of the kaffir lime leaves, which somehow bring all the ingredients together to create a dish so simple, yet so full of flavour. Best enjoyed with steamed rice and a sunny-side up egg, the green curry chicken is and always will be the perfect representation of the true flavours of Thai cuisine By Naorose Ali
Ingredients 400g chicken 3tbs green curry paste 2 1/2cups coconut milk 5 small eggplants, quartered 2 -3 red spur chilis ,sliced diagonally 2 kafir lime leaves, torn 1/2 cup sweet basil 1 1/2 tbsp fish sauce 1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp cooking oil 1 egg 150g steamed rice
AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U N E 20, 201 3
Direction: Cut the chicken into thin pieces. Saute the curry paste in oil over medium heat until fragrant. Then, reduce the heat and gradually add 1 1/2 cups of the coconut milk. Stir until a film of green oil surfaces. Add chicken and kaffir lime leaves. Continue cooking for three minutes until fragrant and the chicken is cooked through. Transfer the mixture to the pot, place over medium heat and cook until it begins to boil. Add remaining coconut milk and season with sugar and fish sauce. When the mixture returns to a boil, add the eggplants. Cook until the eggplants are done. Finally, sprinkle sweet basil leaves and red chili on top, and turn off the heat. Arrange on a serving dish and garnish with sweet basil leaves and red chilies before serving.

2 Before mixing your batter, always make sure all ingredients are at room temperature 2If you want different textures, you can always mix milk with sour cream or use yoghurt instead of milk 2 The best way to bake to perfection is to weigh all ingredients using a digital scale 2 If a recipe requires you to separate your egg whites, then it’s best to separate them when the eggs are cold 2 When whipping egg whites, make sure they are warm or at room temperature 2 To quickly bring eggs to room temperature, place eggs in a bowl of lukewarm water for 20 minutes 2 To add dry ingredients to the wet ones, always use a whisk to mix the dry ingredients together 2 When a recipe has both dry and wet ingredients, begin and end with adding the dry ingredients 2 When adding dry ingredients, mix just until they are incorporated 2 Be careful of the amount of sugar and flour you use: too much sugar can give your cake a dark crust, while too little can lead to tough texture 2 A magic trick to really bring out the flavour in sweet baked dishes is to add a tiny pinch of salt 2 When mixing the batter using folding techniques, gently add the lighter of the two mixtures on top 2 When baking cakes, wait for your oven to reach the desired temperature before putting the cakes in it 2 Never take out or open your oven before 20 minutes of baking a cake. After 20 minutes, rotate the cake 2 It’s best to use the middle rack of your oven

Bookshelves in my mind
Aries (mar 21- apr 19) You will be experiencing some positive changes this week. Your confidence level will steadily be on the rise as well. I once saw a coffee table with a glass top that spelt out “Bangladesh.” The crevices and openings within the letters provided nice little niches for small objects and magazines. I started visualising it as a bookshelf, before all kinds of other ideas flooded into my mind. Why not have books shelved among mounted quotations on the walls, or zigzag patterns in angles and curves? Why doesn’t the bookshelf on the wall become a decoration in itself? My father used to have a freestanding bookshelf that could be rotated. At one point, he had wheels put in under this unique piece of furniture, and started moving it from the living room, to the balcony, to the bedroom. He loved it. His stocks of news and film magazines, illustrated stocks of old TimeLife books, novels, and treatise on various aspects of religion shared different shelves. I will always link my father’s image with that shelf, as he would lie down on his oldfashioned easy chair with that bookshelf ceremoniously parked next to him. Perhaps it is due to my upbringing, but I always find it endearing when I see a whole wall or two covered in books from ceiling to floor. With

cookbooks now in the market, bookshelves have even appeared in kitchens. The titles of the books speak volumes about their owners’ interests, and so bookshelves reflect the personality of a house. Throw in a few decorations between books, and voila, you have a striking backdrop. Don’t think of bookshelves as planks of wood mounted on walls. Instead, visualise them made of things like glass, wires, pieces of plastic, concrete slabs in all forms, discarded ladders or window frames. Innovative bookshelves have organic looking curves built in that conform to the curves of your body and provide a funky resting place to read your books. So next time you’re looking for a bookshelf, take the time to select one that suits your personality.

You can argue and fight, but it will get you nowhere – find common ground and move on. Sagittarius (nov 22- dec 21) You’re not someone who is easily swept off his/her feet, but there will be one person who may do just that. This week is the perfect time to pursue him/her. Capricorn (dec 22- jan 19) You will breeze through this week believing that you are ready for what’s in store for you. However, there shall be many surprises awaiting you. Aquarius (jan 20 – feb 19) This week you will look at past secrets in a completely new light. Your change in perception will also bring about changes in your future plans. Unlike regular restaurants that build their reputation through clever marketing schemes and great location, the beauty of online eateries is that they rely solely on the quality of their offerings. While new restaurants rely on ads that boast of “the best” burger or lasagna in town, online eateries strongly believe in the saying: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” By N Anita Amreen

Apple pie: Most people have individual preferences when it comes to apple pie. Daily Deli attempts to satisfy several of these preferences without overdoing any of its apple pie ingredients. The balance of flavours, simple filling and hint of cinnamon create a dish light and pleasing to any pie lover.
Daily Deli – one of the first online eateries in Bangladesh to offer British pies – has begun making its mark by daring avid foodies to take one bite of their baked goodies. Their small yet diverse menu is kept fresh and exciting with a few standout comfort foods, such as cottage pie, shepherd's pie and chocolate pie, as well as other sweet and savoury dishes. Standing up to their challenge, the Avenue T team decided to see exactly where the proof of the pudding lay.
Lemon and herb roasted chicken: It is seldom that you try a dish and are left silently baffled by its utter perfection. The lemon and herb roasted chicken is one such dish that makes you want to close your eyes and live in the moment, enjoying every splash of flavour. From the tender quality of the chicken, to the perfectly consolidated flavours of herbs, to the mouthwatering tang of the lemon – this dish is surely a winner. Shepherd's pie: From the very first
bite, it's hard to get over the topping of mash that slowly melts in your mouth. Once you do manage to get over it, you can’t help but notice the perfectly seasoned meat layer at the bottom. Instantly winning approving nods from all members of our team, this mouthwatering pie is definitely an easy crowd-pleaser.

With prices ranging from Tk400 for individual servings to Tk950 for mediumsized pies, the Avenue T tasting team concludes that the Daily Deli provides you with your money’s worth for delicious, home-baked pies. Mini pies: Since Daily Deli specialises in savoury pies, we were slightly apprehensive about their mini chocolate pies. However, after tasting the original mini chocolate pie and its variations (sesame seed crust and raisin crust) our worries were put to rest. Although the chocolate pies do not have an overly dramatic presence, they will certainly satisfy your chocolate cravings
