Amour A tale of love and sacrifice subsequent to firemen’s discovery of a corpse By Tausif Sanzum It is hard to point out any particular scene that stands out, yet a few scenes are worth mentioning:
•George confronting the nurse •George helping Anne with the wheel
“Warm Bodies” is a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in a world torn between humans and zombies due to a breakout. The zombie and comic twist to a classic tale makes for a compelling watch, especially due to the acting of the lead characters, Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer. The only downer is the quality of the effects, but the story and direction make up for that.

“Revolution: Season 1” is a post apocalyptic science fiction television series currently airing on Star World on Saturdays from 9:30pm to 10:30pm. The series raises a very important question as to what might happen if there is suddenly no electricity and everything comes to a standstill. It is sprinkled with emotion, action and a generous dose of science. The audience is left surprised with a few twists and turns. One warning: do not get attached to any particular character, as you can never be sure whether a person will be killed off in the coming episodes.

Even though euthanasia is not the most original concept, Michael Haneke succeeds in weaving a story that emotionally connects with its viewers in his 2012 released French movie “Amour.” The story is not complicated and focuses on a married couple over 80 played by Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The wife, Anne Laurent, undergoes a surgery which goes wrong, leaving her partially
paralysed and confined to a wheel chair. Things get worse when she has a second stroke, leaving her completely bedridden and in a state of dementia. Till the very end of the movie, the husband, George, keeps his promise not to send her away to a nursing home. Not once does the movie break out into a melodramatic saga, and yet the audience feels the love these two characters share.

The direction and story of the movie are a testament of the brilliance of Michael Haneke. Each frame is captured as if it were a painting. Emmanuelle Riva is breathtakingly beautiful as a role both physically and emotionally demanding, while Jean-Louis Trintignant purposely underplays his character and steals the show. Isabelle Huppert sparkles in a brief performance. Have you ever wondered what might have happened if Romeo and Juliet were eighty-year-old lovers living in the 21st century? “Amour” is a more realistic, mature and less clichéd version of the play.

2012 BMW 116i Nothing beats the joy of driving a BMW. For those of you who thought owning a BMW was out of your budget, you might want to reconsider with the new 2012 BMW 116i. Far from being an unaffordable model, the rear wheel drive 116i has both the attractive look and vital sporty feel of a BMW By Tahsin Momin With the glitches taken care of, the second generation 116i comes equipped with a lighter aluminium suspension. This means there is a reduction in the unsprung mass that notably improves the ride quality. The onboard computer will let you choose from three different drive modes: Comfort, Sport or fuelsaving Eco Pro driving mode. The settings alter engine and stability controls to suit the desired driving style.
The power plant in the 116i is a 1.6-litre, 115BHP twin turbo, four-cylinder petrol engine. It is the exact same engine as the Mini Cooper S, but tweaked down for better fuel economy and more flexibility. BMW optimises the engine by doing tricky stuff to get the most out of its 1.6-litres. The car itself is a miser when it comes to fuel, thanks to a simple, effective technology called BMW Efficient Dynamics that helps the
116i sip as little as 5.7-litres/100km. The 116i certainly delivers inside. The extra length in overall size has enhanced rear-seat roominess. Then there’s the usual BMW-style sporty driving position. The car’s instruments are also the predictable BMW standard and are positioned in a nice curved binnacle. The material quality of BMW’s fixtures and fittings seems good. From the satin-silvered audio and ventilation knobs to the glossy, black air vent surrounds, the car’s minor cabin arrangements are genuinely appealing. Standard kit includes Bluetooth phone, 6.5-inch colour screen, keyless start, 16 inch alloy and LED lights.

ROCK THAT BODY The perception of beauty over the years has been wrongfully distorted. Women are led to believe they must aim for a supermodel figure, so they struggle with their image and develop low selfconfidence. Some are even deluded into believing their wardrobe must contain every item off the runway. The moment a woman compares herself to another is a huge mistake, one which leads to an alarming level of self-consciousness. Of all the women I have styled, all have suffered the same issues: lack of confidence, feelings of unworthiness and difficulty expressing their better sides By Mahmood Hossain Photo: Sadia Marium Model: Noureen Yousuf

Colour blocking is also a very good thing for your figure. Always choose lighter colours for the middle to make yourself look thinner. Short jackets (cropped,) shirts of thin fabric and kitten heels (short and slender heels usually 3.5cm high) are highly unflattering, and are to be avoided. Try and find necklaces that are Y-shaped, so the focus can be shifted away from your centre.
As for dresses, choose something that hugs the waist and slightly flares over the hips. For the accessories, it’s better to choose thick and short pieces to, yet again, bring the attention upward. 3.Bigger on top, smaller on the bottom: For women who have nicely shaped and slender legs but a large bust (broad shoulders and large breasts,) the illusion here is to create a balance and make your bottom half look a bit fuller.
V-neck dresses with wide straps and a flare at the hemline will give you the appearance of an hourglass shape. To make your legs stand out, a knee-length, A-line skirt works just fine. Always avoid wearing short necklaces or ones that sit right on your bust. Remember, the attention needs to be as far away as possible from the top.
4.The lipstick figure:
Peplum dresses
To the women who have a small and fairly straight frame from top to bottom, fear not. You should love your small frame because there are so many looks you can pull off; however, that doesn’t mean you can wear everything. In this case, you want to show off the curves you actually do have. Large colour blocks and belted outfits will give you more shape.
Also, peplum dresses will look flattering and keep you away from looking like a stick. Remember to avoid boyish pants and low rise jeans to keep you from looking “shapeless.” And for the love of God (this should be obvious,) stay away from baggy clothes. As for accessories, you can try bib-style necklaces, which, with the illusion of a wider neckline, will make it seem like you have a curvier shape.
There are many more details about your body that can make a huge difference in the way you look. Again, not everyone is the same. There are many highlights about you to be discovered that go beyond just the shape of your body. But your figure is where it all begins: it’s the base, the first layer. Never forget that style is in everything you do, so before you get familiar with your figure, start from the inside. Get to understand what will look good on you and what you will feel comfortable in. Once the ground work is in place, you can gradually step out of your comfort zone and enjoy being the best you.
5.Balanced, equal at the top and bottom: If you wear the same size in tops and bottoms (ie your shoulders and hips are the same width) this is your body type. Plenty of women think they would love to have this figure, or state it to be perfect. It may be desirable, but the difficulty here is to make your waistline more visible without making your torso look shorter.
Belted- dresses
wide legged pants can be a simple fix!
For the women who find it difficult to find their waistline and end up wearing nothing but baggy clothes, simple fixes like wide-legged pants will give you a slimmer look.
The biggest issue for this body type is finding things that will fit the hips and waist. It’s actually okay to go with a bit of flair, but stick to basic colours. The idea is to show more of your upper body and divert the attention away from the bottom. Something like a tunic, or even a boat neck T-shirt, will do just the trick.
Tunics
Something extra in the middle:
2.Small on top and heavy on the bottom:
V-neck
Constantly jumping from one diet to another and changing your exercise routines will only take you so far. True beauty is about finding your own style, and making it look easy to walk out the door everyday with your head held high. In order to project that confidence, you must feel comfortable in your own skin before diving into all those attention-grabbing outfits. In other words, you must feel good before you look good. It’s that simple. You have to know yourself, your body, what works and what doesn’t work. Ladies, you are much more beautiful than you think, so do yourselves a favour and show the world your own flavour of sexy. What works and what doesn’t? Well, not every shape is exactly the same, but there are generally five different body types, so read closely and apply with care.
7
Get yourself into looks that are belted, like dresses, trench coats or even cardigans. Menswear inspired outfits work just fine, but remember to avoid loose fitting trousers , which give you little to no shape for the bottom.
Ladies, it’s not a competition, it doesn’t matter what your friends are wearing or how they look. It’s not about how skinny or overweight a celebrity is. Take a good look in the mirror. There is a beautiful woman there that people actually love, regardless the body type. You don’t need to resemble Candice Swanepoel to be chic. A positive attitude and outlook on everyday life is what makes you look better by making you feel better. Don’t do it for others, do it for yourself

Protecting yourself from monsoon splashes By N Anita Amreen
As the heated summer months roll by, the monsoon has quickly made its presence felt with light drizzles and heavy downpour. While all of us enjoy the beauty and bounty of rain, we can’t help but notice the problems that come with it: soiled shoes, drenched clothes and the inevitable “bed hair” look. Here are a few quick tips that will leave you well prepared for the showers • The best way to equip yourself for

the rain is to know when it’s raining. Many of us fall victims to rain when we fail to check the daily weather forecast. Make a point to check
each day’s weather forecast before stepping out of the house Carry a strong umbrella. Invest in an expensive brand, such as Shankars, as these umbrellas are strong enough to protect you from the most torrential rainfall. Although light umbrellas are easier to carry, they aren’t of much use during heavy downfalls Be careful about the material you wear. Suede and leather usually don’t fare well in the rain. Unprotected leather usually damages easily Carry handkerchiefs, napkins and a polythene bag in your purse. Also, carry a small face wash and compact to refresh yourself once you’ve reached your destination If you’re headed to work, carry a pair of rain boots. If boots are too bulky to carry, pack a pair of flip flops. Once you reach work, you can change out of them Always carry plastic bags or files for documents or other items you can’t afford to get wet It’s better to wear shorts when travelling using public transportation. If you must change into denims or formal pants, carry them with you instead of risking soiling them in the rain

Mummy diaries: not so bad, or is it?
Samira Mostafa is a full time mom, a freelance Qualitative Researcher and Education Consultant
So the feelings, quivering, inquisitive and happy, have all begun. The mood swings are in full sway for some of us, while others feel no difference as we stay cranky all the time. Being pregnant, you wake up a new person every day. Fatigue usually engulfs you, regardless whether you’re tired or not. My days started really early, which was unusual for me. I like my morning sleep and hate getting up for work. Lucky for me, I left work before getting pregnant. Hence, there was no pressure on me to be the early bird, but my body, or tiny baby, decided otherwise. Baby decided to start mornings around 5am. “Why, why?” I would keep pondering in my fading sleep, until it was completely gone and I was wide awake, glaring at the ceiling. Turning my head, I would see my husband sound asleep.
AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, J U LY 1 1, 2013
I have to admit, there had been moments along the months of my pregnancy when I had strong urges to push my husband off the bed for sleeping so well. A frustrating feeling kept creeping up when I was awake for no good reason. In those lonely moments of the night, weird thoughts would pop up in my head. Deeper and clearer topics would settle in my brain for a greater review and higher opinion, as if I had been injected with an idea-generating drug. Well, those feelings actually have a name: “hormones.” Your hormones speak more than your mind during those days, so those waking nights are often spent thinking about the tiniest matters of life. You really get into the cracks of it all, and it’s not always a pleasant way of thinking about things, I must say.

Some call it a money purse, but let’s stick to the universally accepted term “wallet.” There are things you may not know about a man’s wallet and how it suits each individual. Different styles can carry a different amount of necessities. Note this down
•Trifold: This is essentially a beginner’s wallet. In other words, it carries cash, a slot for an ID card and very little room for cards. Hate to break this to you, but this wallet is for the younger generation, and not grown men •Bifold (billfold): This has more room for those cards mentioned above. The wider pockets reduce tension on the stitching, so there’s no need to cram stuff in. The design hasn’t changed since the introduction of credit cards in the 1950s. It’s the most common wallet carried by men all over the world •Chequebook wallet: This wallet has so much room, you can’t worry about leaving anything out. You have your chequebook slot, a little room for
cash and your cards. This, of course, is for the men who prefer to write cheques instead •Card holder: No room for cash here, only credit cards. Remember, modern card holders are very thin, so choose the couple of cards that are absolutely necessary for everyday purposes •Money clip: This is for the gentlemen who stick to carrying a certain amount of cash, and possibly keep the cards at home or in their other pockets. Big plus here: money clips come in all sorts of designs, so you can choose the one to match your personality There are other wallets, like the passport or travel wallets, whose uses are obvious.
Q: I’ve been invited to my best friend’s wedding reception. I really want to wear all black, but people are telling me I’m crazy! Am I?
A: Wearing all black at weddings is considered bad taste in cultures where it signifies mourning. In reality, however, that rule is nonsense and doesn’t apply here (assuming you’re in Bangladesh.) Men have been wearing black suits for years at weddings. Even women are able to wear black at weddings, although that was also frowned upon once. However, if the reception is during the day time, it’s better to wear lighter coloured suits. Otherwise, feel free to wear all the black you want. And to answer your question: no, sir, you are not crazy.
Style Tip:
Lighter shades of blue for your dress shirt and tie are the perfect combination for a brown suit and always a winning bet
In Fashion
Regardless the season, brown just wasn’t "in style." But just like many items in fashion, the rules tend to bend, and soon enough, break. Today’s fashion is all about individuality and variety. You can’t just put on any brown suit, though. Different shades of brown, like tobacco, copper and coffee hit the right spot. Want to know what types of brown suits you should add to your closet? Take notes. •Minimalist: The simple and solid brown suit is one you should add to your closet •Pinstripes: Even in business power play mode, you can sport this to the office with ease •Double-breasted: The height
of sophistication, this suit is all about business and class. With the added peak lapels, it’s a serious piece to wear; make sure your confidence is not lacking The best way to sport brown suits, as always, is to make sure every piece fits properly. Going to the tailor's is your best bet at getting all the details done flawlessly. Select the best quality fabrics to pull off any of the suits listed, as this colour needs extra attention and effort. Remember to check that the brown shoes you wear are a different shade than your suit, and this might sound crazy, but on certain dark brown suits, you can actually wear black shoes.
Q: I don’t own too many suits, so I’m a little insecure about going to certain events wearing the same thing. How can I fix this?
A: If buying a new suit is out of your budget, there’s no need to worry. All you have to do is buy or make dress shirts in all sorts of colours and patterns. Mixing and matching your looks is the best way to keep the insecurity away and your chic portfolio on track. You can easily take a black suit jacket and pair it with grey suit trousers. Swap the dress shirts and your ties, and keep them in rotation. These easy steps will create a comfort zone, as well as prevent you from feeling your look is boring. Moreover, the fact that you put extra effort into your look will gain you respect.

Blow dry like a pro!
Sabikun Nahar is a professional hair stylist and make-up artist who has worked in Sydney, Australia, following her graduation at Toni&Guy Sydney International School of Hairdressing.
Blow-drying may seem like a big challenge on the first day, but it only gets easier from then on. We all wonder how they do it in the salons, and how we’re supposed to recreate the same effect while struggling to reach the hair on the back of our heads. With these tricks of the trade, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a blow-out pro! By Sabikun Nahar TOOLS If you're planning to blow-dry your hair at least once a week, it's time to invest in a proper hairdryer. This does not necessarily mean you have to go out there and get yourself an industrial strength, salon professional hairdryer. Those are heavy duty with a higher wattage, as they're meant to be used on many clients each day. You can stick with a semi-professional, mid-range hairdryer. Some of Amazon. com’s bestsellers are Babyliss Pro, Remington Pro, and Rusk Speed. These will cost between $50 (Tk3,900) to $80 (Tk6,230) and should last you at least three to four years, depending on usage. You'll also need a medium-sized, round brush with mixed bristles, a widetoothed comb and some hair clips to section the hair.
PRODUCTS Choose and apply products depending on your hair type. If you have fine or limp hair, apply light products, like mousse or thickening spray, to add volume and body. For dry hair, use a leave-in conditioner and a smoothing shine serum for your hair to appear healthy. For thick and frizzy hair, use an extra strength heat protectant or straightening balm to take out kinks and smooth the frizz. When applying these products, always start at the ends and work your way up, making sure you distribute the product evenly throughout the hair. Excess use of a product may cause a limp blow-dry and greasy roots.
● Dry your hair with a towel to take out excess water ● Use your fingers to lift and dry roots while maintaining volume ● Blast hair to about 50% dry. It will be difficult to style if the hair is too wet ● Turn your dryer on low heat and low speed settings to avoid over drying and ruining the end result ● Split your hair into four big sections if your hair is fine, or smaller sections if your hair is thick ● Start from the back and work your way to the front ● Hold your round brush horizontally, and point your hairdryer nozzle vertically along the hair shaft towards the floor
NOW, YOU ARE WELL-EQUIPPED AND READY TO GO: ● Start with clean, washed hair
It will be tricky to use both these tools together at first, but the only way to nail the technique is to have patience
and practice, practice, practice! Finish with the "cool shot" button and a medium hold, anti-humidity hairspray to really lock in that style.
Whether you're trying to achieve super sleek tresses, perfectly scrunched waves or beautifully created curls at home, it all starts with the right tools, products and techniques! Keep practising for fewer visits to the salon. Good luck!

Five baffling beauty questions answered
Navin Ahmed has studied Cosmetic Techniques and Management at Sheridan College in Canada. She worked as a freelance make-up artist in Toronto and is the founder of GALA Wedding Planners and Makeover Studio in Dhaka.
Here are some frequently asked questions that my clients have always inquired about By Navin Ahmed
● Should I wash my face when I get up in the morning, even if I cleansed it right before bed? You would think that your face didn't get dirty during that short period between hitting the sheets and greeting the day, but you’re wrong! Almost everyone’s skin accumulates some oil overnight, and though the oil itself is not bad, applying moisturiser and make-up on top of it is. Wash your face in the morning and before bed with a gentle cleanser, and moisturise afterwards.
● Should blush go on the apples of your cheeks or under your cheekbones? Blush should always go on the apples of your cheeks. Opt for a healthy, flushed glow during the day, and dramatise with bolder colours at night. Start with a smile to make the target area more pronounced, then brush your blush on the fullest part of your cheeks, making sure to build colour gradually according to the look you are going for. Your contour shade should go just below the blush to create depth and definition. Make sure you don't end up with 80s stripes. The two colours should blend and fade softly. ● Should someone with oily skin moisturise? Of course! Oily skin does not make you immune to environmental damages such as windburn, sunburn or general irritation. Moisturiser forms a good barrier against such damage, especially if it has SPF added to it. Moisture is water, and water has nothing to do with oil. If you have oily skin, just get a moisturiser that says “oil- free” or non-comedogenic.
● Should lip liner match or contrast with your lips? Even though a few people (like Lil' Kim) still sport the dark, contrasting outline, it's a really outdated look! Match your lip pencil to your lipstick. It will make your lips appear fuller and give them a cleaner shape.
● Should I apply concealer over or under foundation? You should always put foundation on first, then layer on concealer as needed. Pre-applied concealer will smear right off during foundation application, especially on blemishes.

Stuck in reverse
If K is unwilling to leave her marriage, then however much she likes you, she prefers the comfort of her marriage. You are something to take the boredom out of her life. Often, ladies are in a romantic state of mind when they get married, and soon become disillusioned by their husbands. Hence, they start looking outside their marriage for the romanticism that's missing, and of course, it's so easy to find someone who is totally perfect. Meeting secretly, the anticipation and the romantic words all seem so real, but they are romantic because they do not belong to real life. Say goodbye to K and allow yourself to have a "real" relationship with a woman with whom you can share your life. Distraught
I’m a 35-year-old woman married for the past six years. We had a love marriage, and are living a happy, stable life. The only problem we have is his issue with me having male friends. I have several male friends, two of whom are my best friends since childhood. He doesn’t like me spending time with them and forbids me to stay out with them after 11pm. I’m 35-years-old, so how can he just order me around like this? N N my dear, do I take it you would not mind your husband going out with his female friend and coming home in the early hours? I think I have already mentioned in
this column that I really do not believe in friendship between married women and male friends, and vice versa, unless the partners are involved in the friendship and meetings. Why do you need to be out with your male friends? In my experience as a relationship coach, this kind of "friendship" almost always ends in misery. The husband or wife feels betrayed by the friendship, especially when there is a disagreement within the couple, and the so-called "injured party" confides in the friend. Why not invite your male friends and their partners to join you for dinners or outings? Of course, that also means you have to go out from time to time with your husband's friends and partners. What do you think? Photos: Big Stock
Drama Mama A friend of mine recently lost her husband and father of her two children, ages five and eight. She has no idea how to help her children process this loss while protecting them from pain and suffering. S Death is a tricky concept for children to comprehend. For the younger child, who has very little understanding of death, it may just cause confusion. They may fear the loss of the other parent and become clingy, or develop problems with sleeping or bed-wetting. For the older child, death is an understandable concept that inspires curiosity and questions. While it may seem kinder to sugar-coat the truth, children are capable of handling honesty and will deal with the loss more effectively if they are given clear facts and explanations. They need to see and experience grief to learn to cope with it. They may act out at school or become withdrawn or an-
gry, but in an open and honest environment, they are more likely to talk about their feelings. A few months ago I had a second child, and my five-year-old daughter is not entirely happy about it. After the initial interest faded, she has refused to interact with her brother and becomes angry and clingy when I do. Help! T Accepting that they are no longer the only priority in their parents’ lives is very difficult for little children. After having been the sole recipient of all the love and attention, they don’t like to share it with someone cuter and more demanding! Be sure to make time for your daughter and continue to engage in shared activities as before, but also be firm if she acts out, and explain that certain behaviours are unacceptable. Eventually, she will understand that you are capable of loving both her and the baby equally.

Yoga: sun salutation Sun Salutation is a series of poses gracefully performed and linked by breath. It’s a great way to greet the sun! By Auronee Islam
Mountain pose: Stand at the front of your mat with your feet hip-width apart, your spine erect and arms at your sides Arms reaching upward: Inhale as you extend your arms overhead, bringing your palms together and expanding your chest Standing forward bend: Exhale as you bend your chest towards your thighs and hands towards the floor Lunge pose: Inhale as you place your hands on either side of your right foot on the mat, while lunging your left leg straight back behind you. Expand your chest as you lengthen your spine Plank pose: Exhale as you step your right leg back so your feet are now side by side. Look straight at the floor, keeping your arms extended and your body straight. Hold this pose for three to five full breaths
Auronee Islam is a student, teacher, and practitioner of healthy lifestyle through good food, fitness and spirituality. Her philosophy in life is to strive for balance and bliss in the mind, body and soul
Kneel and lower head: Exhale slowly as you drop your knees to the floor. Untuck your toes, bring your hips back to your heels, and lower your head to the floor with arms still extended in front of you Get on all fours: Inhale slowly as you bring yourself up on all fours
Lower chest and chin: Exhale slowly as you bend your elbows and lower your chest and chin to the floor so your hands, knees and feet are touching the mat Upward facing dog: Inhale as you push your head and ribcage up off the mat by fully extending your arms as you press the tops of your feet into the ground. Your thighs and hips should rise a few inches above the mat Downward facing dog: Exhale as you tuck your toes and lift your hips up and back so that you’re bearing your weight on the balls of your feet. This should create an upsidedown V shape with your body. Relax your neck and allow the weight of your head to lengthen your spine Lunge pose: Inhale, as you step your left foot forward this time Standing forward bend: Exhale as you step your right foot forward next to your left foot so your weight is on both feet Arms reaching upward: Inhale into the “Arms reaching upward” pose again Mountain Pose: Exhale, completing the Sun Salutation by returning to the Mountain Pose, as the sun salutes you right back! Six superfoods for a healthy heart Heart disease is one of the most common causes of death among both men and women. With so much being said and written on how to prevent the disease, one would imagine that the number of deaths caused by it would be drastically reduced. Unfortunately, that is not the case, as elaborate diets, excessive work out regimes and diligent weight control often seem like too much work By N Anita Amreen
For those of you who are too lazy to incorporate massive changes into their lifestyles to prevent heart disease, begin including a few of these superfoods into your diet. Not only are these foods easily available, they are also relatively easy to consume. Sardines: An excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and niacin, sardines, when eaten in moderation, help prevent major heart disease.
Oatmeal: This wondrous food is full of fibre and provides lasting energy throughout the day, killing ravenous hunger pangs.
Walnuts: For an easy and quick omega-3 boost, consume a handful of walnuts as a midday snack. Despite the fact that they may be high in fat, the fat is only polyunsaturated, in other words "good fat".
Plums: Plums are fruit renowned for their laxative capabilities. Not only is this fruit a good source of fibre and iron, it also reduces the LDL cholesterol in the blood with regular consumption.
Kidney beans: Kidney beans are a low-fat, highly soluble source of protein, alongside being cholesterolfree and having a low glycemic index. This perfect health food is truly a wonder.
Chickpeas: Chickpeas are extremely high in fibre and have multiple heart benefits. Not only does a bowl of chickpeas provide a comforting meal, it also helps keep your heart in good condition.
