Through The Tiny Years

Bionic Hand Just think of all the things you could not do, if you did not have your hands or even one hand. The simplest of tasks would be most difficult and some tasks would be impossible. When people have lost their hands or legs in accidents, scientists have provided simple artificial limbs for

them. These have been no more than a false hand or foot or in the old days, just a stump. Today, scientists are developing what is called a bionic or cyber hand. The new hand will be able to work with the help of a microchip, and users will be able to move the fingers and even feel things. Tahsin Momin

No road is long when the company is good. Naim and his friends are perfect examples of that! Born in the same neighborhood, these kids have been together for as long as they can remember. Growing up in a small slum near Banani, these children have seen terrible things. Their houses were demolished a year ago. Despite all of that, these buddies stood by each other – through the tears and the smiles. Ibrahim says he can bet his favorite

toy on the fact that they will be friends forever, even after they grow up. The rest of the gang giggles. Rifts happen between them, but often the tiniest of bodies have the biggest hearts. They forgive and start their games all over again! They might not know where they will go in life or how far, but one thing is for sure- as long as these friends are together, they’d let nothing dim each others' smiles. Tasmia Nehreen Ahmed

Inland Taipan’s are mostly found in the regions of central to eastern Australia. They have a very interesting way of adapting to the environment around them. They change their skin colour during seasonal changes.

3

Each bite contains 110mg of venom which is enough to kill 100 people or 250,000 mice! This venom takes only 45 minutes on an average to kill an adult human.

4

These snakes are 50 times more venomous than the average cobras.

5

Surprisingly they do not attack unless they are provoked. Apurba Karmaker

PET TIPS

1

Fill ¾ of the cup with water

2

Add 4-5 drops of red food colouring

3

Slowly pour oil into the water and watch how the oil floats

4

Sprinkle some salt in the water. You should see blobs of lava

floating up and down in the mixture

5

Keep adding salt to continue the process . You can make your own lava colour by putting different food colours How does it work? It’s very simple; we all know oil is not a soluble substance for which it floats on water. However, salt is heavier than oil so it drowns by taking some oil with it and gets dissolved. The oil comes up on the surface when the salt dissolves in the water. Thus it creates a lava-like effect in the water. Apurba Karmaker

Squeaky Clean Fido

Dogs are hyper creatures; they run around the neighbourhood way too often and by the time they return home they are covered in dirt from head to paw. Since your parents wouldn’t allow you to keep a stinky pup here are a few things you can do to turn that around and it all starts with cleaning your precious pet. Location All cleaning must be done in the bathroom; let’s face it if you started giving Fido a bath in the living room you and your pet both risk facing the wrath of angry parents.

Tools You will need towels, shampoo, hairbrush, and a towel. Never mix any of these tools with your own. Brushing Before splashing a bucket of water on your dog, brush through his coat thoroughly to find out if he’s got fleas or not. If he does then try using an antiflea shampoo. Bathing This will be a breeze because unlike cats dogs are enthusiastic about baths. Wet his coat with water, apply shampoo and massage his head, face, body and of

course the legs.

Wrap it up Once you’re done, rinse off the foam with water and dry him up using a towel. Rubab Nayeem Khan

It’s a super-hot summer again and even though it’s just April yet, it’s sweltering hot! However, ever think of the tiny birds in the summer who find no water to drink during flights? Well, here’s your chance to help the little birdies out! Follow some simple steps to create your own bird feeder and watch your feathered friends flock to you. What you need • • • • • •

2 small/medium sized terracotta pots (not too heavy) A piece of cloth Superglue Two 6-inch ruler-length pieces of wood Paint Scissors

How to get it done First, take a small bowl and paint it. Use terracotta saucers or shallow bowls so that you can paint easily. You can get these very cheap from any roadside vendor. Be careful to only paint the outside of the pot and not the inside. You will be putting water in it later! Let the paint dry. This should take 20 minutes tops, in this heat. Just put it out in your veranda. Once dry, cut two, very long, thin strips of cloth with a pair of scissors and arrange them in a cross. Then place your bowl on the intersection of the cross and paste the two strips of cloth diagonally with superglue. (Superglue can be dangerous: get an adult to help you here). Now paint the other bowl and let it

dry. Place the dried bowl above the first one and use more glue to stick the sides of the bowl to the four strips. Space the two bowls at least 8 to 10 inches apart. Tie the four ends of cloth strips upward and let the glue dry. Tie them in a way that there are still enough cloth strips left on top. Don’t tie up the top completely. You will need the bits of cloth to tie to a hanger. Finally, glue one piece of wood beneath each wood to create a bird perch and hang your bird feeder up. Fill one bowl with water and the other with grains. Make your feeder colourful to attract more birds. Munira Ahmed

instrument

of the week

This week’s instrument is the Xylophone. It is a member of the percussion family, which means this pretty thing is a cousin of the drums. It is one of those fancy foreign cousins too, because while other percussion instruments make crashing noises, the Xylophone produces a pitch when struck. Xylophones have been around

since 2000BC. They were probably being used in Asia first, and then quickly spread to Africa, and arrived in Europe in the 19th century. To make a sound on the xylophone the player must strike a bar with a mallet. When the xylophonist strikes a bar with a hard mallet, the xylophone produces a bright and sharp sound. When the xylophonist strikes a bar with a soft mallet a more muted sound is produced. Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

Up and Down! Available since 500BC, Yo-Yo is by far one of the oldest toys around. The modern Yo-Yo was discovered when a manufacturing company was setup in California in 1928 by Duncan. Made out of plastic and available in plenty of eye catching colours, it definitely has its mark on a child and even on some adults. Popularity of the Yo-Yo went off the charts in the late 70’s and 80’s when a lot of research went on to make the Yo-Yo more interesting. Made of two discs and connected in the middle with an axle and a loop of string connected to the centre axle. It simply works by winding up the string, putting a finger in the loop at the end of the string and then throwing the Yo-Yo as hard as you can. It will unwind and then wind itself back on to your hand. It might not have much going on about it but it is available in plenty of colours to make your child drool over it. Available at all toy stores for only Tk50. Tahsin Momin

A game that’s monstrously hard but equally just as fun, Super Hexagon requires a lot of skill, but gives you satisfaction for every extra second you survive. In the game, you’re a tiny little triangle surviving the maze of hypnotic, geometric shapes that close into the middle of the screen. The vibrant, funky colors and the retro music give a very arcade-like feeling to the game. Super Hexagon practically has a heartbeat of it’s own as the entire game screen beats to the rhythm of the thumping music. There are three unlocked modes: hard, harder, hardest, and chances are, your first few attempts will leave you dead in five seconds. But the difficulty of the game practically invites you back. It’s devious, brilliant, and exciting! The skillfully designed game will have you addicted in no time.Warning: Super Hexagon is not for the fainthearted.Available for download on smart-phones.
