Happy When It Rains!

Navila Kabir

If not a teacher, then? Readers, the favourite teacher for this week is Farhana Naz. She loves to read thriller books and spend time with her children. She went to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and later finished her undergraduate from Dhaka University in Finance. Naz served The Aga Khan School for 15 years. She even won the “Long Service” award this year in the school. Although she is currently an Accounting teacher, Naz previously also taught Math and Commerce. When asked about her students, she said, “I love my students. They have such vibrant and unique personalities and they brings colours in my life.” Truly, she is one of those few teachers whose class any student would hate to miss. Rifat binte haider

When you first meet Milon, he’s quiet and shy. You can bet that he is not a mischief maker. Milon barely causes any hassle. But the story is quite different on a rainy day! His mother screams and shouts but he just won’t listen. After all it’s his favourite season and there’s nothing that can hold this boy back. Milon usually enjoys quiet games and doesn’t make too much noise but when it rains, the little boy runs out of the house with a joyous scream. In his words, it’s the time his enjoyment is complete and says with a squeal that it makes him happy. We can agree hands down that life didn’t offer him the sweetest of fruits, but even then he finds amusement and joy in the little things. As the saying goes, People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be! Tasmia Nehreen Ahmed

EGG IN A BOTTLE

You will need • Parental guidance • A hard-boiled egg • A glass bottle with a mouth just slightly smaller than the egg • Small torn pieces of newspaper • A match stick How to 1. Remove the shell from the egg. Set the egg on the mouth of the bottle to see that the egg does not fit through the mouth. 2. Fold the piece of newspaper into a strip that can be dropped into the bottle, about 1 cm by 8 cm. 3. Light the match and use it to ignite the folded strip of paper. Remove the egg and drop the burning strip of paper into the bottle. 4. Before the fire goes out, set the egg back onto the mouth of the bottle. Within a few seconds the egg will squeeze through the mouth and into the bottle. 5. As it enters the bottle, the egg may break into pieces. A medium or small egg may be small enough to enter the bottle without breaking. Explanation

Snakes are some of the most interesting pets ever. Although some people are scared by them; but with proper care, snakes can be your best friends! Know your snake Before purchasing; know all about your snake. For example, its habit. For first timers, corn snakes are safest and commonly available. Food and Shelter You might want to buy frozen pre killed prey as they are safer to feed your pet.

Moreover, you need a tank, cage lining, heat source, thermometers and a water dish for the snake to soak in. Beware! During feeding times, snakes are most dangerous. Always ask someone to assist you. Snakes can also carry bacteria, so make sure you wash your hands properly before and after. Also, monitor the temperature of the cage correctly as the temperature must not reach 120°. Snakes might burn up!

Before the burning paper is put into the bottle, the pressure of the air inside the bottle is the same as outside the bottle. The burning paper, however, heats the air inside the bottle and causes the air to expand. When the egg is placed on top of the bottle, the fire goes out, and the air inside the bottle cools. As it cools, the air contracts, and the pressure of the air inside the bottle becomes less than the pressure outside. Then, the higher pressure outside pushes the egg into the bottle! Sama E Deen

COLOURS OF SAIGE A sweet movie aimed at families and kids, Saige Paints the Sky is a liveaction movie based on an American Girl doll. Living in Albuquerque, nine-year-old Saige is a sprouting artist. She lives near her beloved grandmother, a famous painter and ranch owner. Only beginning fourth grade, Saige finds a variety of problems welcoming her. Her grandmother inspires her to try and make a difference. With friends by her side, Saige then manages to orchestrate a Day of Beige to show how boring the world is without art. They plan an even larger fundraiser at the annual hot-air balloon fiesta. However, with her grandmother being injured in an accident and her best friend continuing to bond with the new girl, Saige doubts whether she will be able to accomplish what she wishes to. The movie encourages young viewers to overcome their fears, be more assertive, and look for support in their family and loved ones. It also tells them to stand up and make a difference, rather than just sitting idly, waiting for their problems to solve themselves. alveera mamoon

A rainstick is a percussion instrument; it comes from the same family as drums. You play it by shaking it. It makes a sound similar to rain, or maracas. It is a long wooden cylinder, filled with stones or marbles, with needles arranged along the walls in the shape of a spring. When shaken, the stones move around and strike the needles, making music. It was invented by Chilean tribes in South America.

Q. Did you hear the one about the plane? A. It’ll go over your head

poem

He disturbs my tranquil waters He ceases all my peace He troubles sleeping devils Whithout keeping them on a leash.

In Space • When astronauts leave footprints on the moon, they stay there for good as there is no wind to blow them away. • As there is less gravity on Mars, a person weighing 100kg on earth would only weigh 38kg there! • Uranus is the only planet rotating on its side in a barrel like manner. Venus is the only planet that spins backwards compared with the others. • Because no gravity has a downward pull on them, humans become a little taller in space.

He gives me bad news first, And rarely any good. He's my oldest family friend, And the leader of my brood. He breaks my heart over and over. He upsets my peaceful mind. He burdens me when I'm happy. But is somehow always kind. Nostalgia is my one true love. He is my oldest friend. We walk on, hand in hand, Until this world should end.
