Cycle is the new trend These days it’s a common sight seeing the youth of our city using the old fashioned and simple method of transportation, the bicycle. Just a few days ago, there was a campaign for celebrating World Environment Day, which of course promoted riding bicycles to build a healthier city to live in. Having seen all the hype the
campaign created, Akram also got a hold of a cycle for himself, and now he rides his cycle to the bazaar everyday to get grocery for his mom. Even though Akram’s a very young boy, it still doesn’t stop him from using his morals to try making our city a better place to live in. Tasmia Nehreen Ahmed

You must do this experiment in a dark room, so make sure the lights in the TV room are turned off.

Turn off the television.

Hold the flashlight in one hand and place your other hand flat against the TV screen.

Turn on the flashlight and shine the light all over the screen. Do this for at least two minutes, making sure all parts of the screen get a little bit of light.

Turn off the flashlight and remove your hand from the TV. You will see a dark image of your hand on

a glowing screen and it will be visible for up to a few minutes! Some variations: You can use your screen as a notepad! Put the lit flashlight up against the screen and use the light as a pen to write. Turn off the flashlight and enjoy the luminous messages! How does this work? A television screen has stuff in it that glows when it’s hit with light. The back of a TV screen is coated with a material that becomes excited when struck by electrons. The light from a flashlight works to excite these screen-coating materials. The material absorbs energy and re-emits it as a glowing light. Hence, you can see the shows on the TV screen. Tarsiers are very small primates with large eyes, approximately 16mm in diameter, which is the same size as their brain. They have a very high hearing sense. They can turn their heads almost in every direction. They are only found in the islands of South-East Asia. Tarsiers are 4-6 inches tall and their hind legs are twice as long as their torso. Their diet consists of small animals such as birds, insects, lizards and snakes. Till 2008 they were considered critically endangered but as of 2011, the population has been restored. Tahsin Momin

Lost Little Birdy Even when they are flying with their kind, birds tend to get lost. And a lost bird really can’t fend for itself when it isn’t up in the sky; particularly because it might fall prey to cats or dogs. Here are a few tips which will aid you in providing shelter for a homeless bird: Shelter Use a cardboard box to make a home for the bird. You can put something warm like a blanket to make it comfortable for your feathered friend.

Also put some water in the cardboard so that little birdy can quench its thirst once in a while. Health Even if it’s been with you for a day or two, you may have already bonded with it quite well, therefore its wellbeing means a lot to you. You might want to take it to a vet just in case he comes

DIY Piggy Banks

We all love spending our pocket money on our favourite things, but how many of us love saving? Did I hear you say saving was boring? Not anymore! When making a piggy bank is turned into a fun DIY project, no child will ever get bored with saving up!

What you need: • A small cardboard shoe box • Scotch Tape • A Paper Cutter • Acrylic/Fabric paint • Lace • Stickers Here’s how to do It: First, tape the box and the lid firmly with scotch tape. Use wide scotch tapes
for best results and wrap it tightly twice around the lid. That should ensure a strong hold on the lid. Next, get an adult to help you cut a slit at the top of the lid of the box with the paper cutter. Make this clearly visible but don’t cut it too wide. You only need it to slide coins and bills into to the box. Paint the box colourful, using your own creativity and design to make it look as interesting as possible. You can design it according to a theme and use stickers and drawings of your favourite cartoon, movie or comic characters. Acrylic paint is better as they will not run on fingers later, as poster paints tend to do. Make sure you wear a protective apron on your clothes before you start
this project, or you may end up with colours on your clothes that your mother may not be too happy with. Acrylic or poster, colours will not settle well on scotch tape. To cover this area, use strong glue to cover it with lace or simply cover up the area with stickers. If you are using glue, be sure to have an adult help you as little fingers may not be very glue friendly. Let the paint and glue dry, and wash your hands well afterward. Make sure to not invest too much on this project as you will have to cut it open when your bank is filled. Make it a low cost, fun filled experience that makes saving more fun than spending, any day! Apart from all of Henry’s jokes and pranks, at the end he proves that he can accomplish what he wants in a positive manner. The role of Henry is played by Theo Stevenson.

A card game originating from Ohio, Cincinnati, Uno is a popular pastime among people of all ages. The deck consists of 108 cards with 25 cards of each colour- red, blue, green and yellow with number cards of 1 through 9 and action cards of reverse, skip and drawtwo. The remaining cards are action cards called wild and a draw four wild. The effects of the action cards are self-explanatory in the sense that “skip” skips the next person out, reverse changes the direction of laying cards and draw-two and draw-four penalise the next person to draw that number of cards and lose their turn. Also, the person with the last card remaining must shout “Uno” in order to avoid being penalised. This game is great for on-the-spot quick thinking and decision making for children above 7 years of age and makes for a great pastime.
