“Her lovely smile and soft voice in the classroom keeps me attentive all the time in the classroom. She is one of my favourite teachers,” said a student from KG 1. Israt Parvin, our Teacher of Week, has been in the teaching profession for 13 years. Currently she is teaching English at the Tiny Tots section at Summerfield International School. Her love for children started her on this Scholastica journey as a teacher from when she was a university student. As time passed, she fell in love with the job itself. Although her background is actually in Food and Nutrition science, she decided to pursue the education of children instead. And thus, her passion became her profession.

SPORT'S STAR
There’s a star in every one of us. The son of a tannery worker, Rabbi, refuses to let his living conditions separate him from his passion: dancing! Rabbi still remembers how fascinated he was when he first saw Michael Jackson videos on the television, while passing by a store and ever since then he started practicing hip hop, b-boy and break dancing. He knows his parents can’t afford to send him to a dance school
but hopes against all odds that after finishing high school he will be able to take dance lessons abroad. Rabbi is currently studying at the JAAGO School and as destiny planned, a group of spectrum dancers visited the school. Impressed by the talent Rabbi possessed, they promised to take him to America one day and help him turn into the star that he is meant to be. Tasmia Nahreen Ahmed

Tales From the City Episode 3: working out
The story Welcome to the Treehouse We’ve seen the city, with its hustle and bustle and traffic jams. We’ve seen the forest, full of trees, where Jonaki lives. This week, we go back to the city, right into the Treehouse, in the last tree in the city. This is where our animal friends live.
Meet Speedy We’ve met B&D, the narrators of this comic. We’re getting to know Jonaki, the prince of the Firefly kingdom. This week, meet Speedy. He might be a slow tortoise, but don’t think he’s a weakling. Mr Speedy is a fitness freak and loves working out!

Picture Wall Hangings No gift says “Your friendship means a lot to me” like a present you made yourself.
You will need • • • • • • •
Some nice photographs A punching machine A key ring A pair of scissors Beads/sequins Fabric paint Ribbon
How to Get It Done
Note: You will probably need a grown-up to help you.
We love a Koala! 1. Koalas are not bears. 2. Koala fossils found in Australia have been dated as long ago as 20 million years. 3. Koalas eat eucalypt leaves and almost nothing else. 4. The closest living relative of the koala is the wombat. 5. Koalas have sharp claws, which help them climb trees. 6. Koalas have similar fingerprints to humans. 7. Koalas have large noses that are coloured pink or black. 8. Outside of breeding seasons, koalas are quiet animals. 9. A baby koala is called a ‘joey’. 10. Joeys live in their mother’s pouch for around six months and remain with them for another six months or so afterwards. 11. Koalas cannot be kept legally as pets.
1. First, take some nice pictures in a size you desire. Try not to make them too big. 2. Print them out on photo paper and have an adult laminate it for you. Make sure they put one picture in one laminating paper only. 3. Cut out the laminated picture in different shapes like stars or hearts. Remember to round the edges so that laminating paper does not cut you. 4. Use fabric paint to paint the transparent laminated part of the picture. 5. Once the paint has dried, lightly spread glue over it. 6. Next, go all out with pasting sequins, shells, or beads on the edge. 7. Do this with as many pictures as you want and punch them out in a corner. Now slip a key ring (without a charm) inside the punched holes so that the wall hanging can be flipped from time to time to change pictures. 8. Finally, loop a ribbon through the hole of the key ring and tie up the ends. Your personalised wall hanging is ready to be gifted away and we assure you that your friend will love this new, funky gift above anything else! Munira fidai

rainbow in a glass What’s happening here?
The more sugar is added to a glass of water, the more sugar molecules will take over the space. Meaning the more sugar is present in the water, the denser it is.
You will need
12 tablespoons of water, 10 tablespoons of sugar, food colouring (blue, yellow, red, green), 5 small cups and a spoon.
Step 1
Add 1 tbsp suagr to the first cup, 2 tbsp to the second cup, 3 tbsp to the third cup and 4 tbsp to the fourth cup. (Make sure you label the cups and keep them in order.)
Step 2
Add three tablespoons of water to each of the cups. Stir to dissolve the sugar in the water. (Heat the cups for about 20 seconds in the microwave if the sugar does not dissolve)
Step 3
Add blue food colouring to the first cup, yellow to the second, red to the third and green to the fourth. Important note: do not mix the water.
Step 4
In the fifth cup, pour in the liquid that had 4 tablespoons of sugar (green).
Step 5
Slowly keep adding the liquid from the other cups. Starting with the red liquid, then the yellow and then finally, blue. Be sure to add it slowly, so not to disturb the liquid. Each layer will remain seperate. Afshan Sattar
PET TIPS
stray love
Whether it’s a woof or a meow, you might want to keep the following tips in mind when approaching your four legged friends! Pssh, Click, and Mew Believe it or not, animals do respond to such silly sounds. Do not make quick movements while you are at it, or else Fluffy or Fido might take a hike! Snail speed If you want either of the two species to trust you, take baby steps in approaching them. If you speed up, they’ll either run off to another direction, or attack you. To scratch or not to scratch Once you have earned their trust, slowly reach out for a gentle stroke or tap
lightly on their nose. Be patient; fluffy is about to judge your actions. Staring is a no-no Avoid eye contact with them. If you are approaching a dog, look to one side of the dog rather than staring down at it. Never ever have a staring contest with a cat while approaching it. You’ll just be imitating another cat! Wag/Purr Finally when your desired fur babies have observed your movements, and taken a whiff of your scent they will draw a conclusion that you are harmless. A cat will most definitely graze against your legs for affection and a dog will show its approval by wagging its tail. Rubab Nayeem Khan

Speedy's Zone Blue Balliett’s Hold Fast Early and her parents don’t have much. What they do have is a lot of love and support for each other. Especially her dad, who taught her to love books and reading, and told her that hard work can change any bad situation into a good one. Then one day, he disappears. The family has to move to a homeless shelter, and life becomes very, very hard indeed.

Movie
MUST read Book Early doesn’t give up. Mean school kids, unhelpful police officers, even the sketchy librarian can’t make her give up on her father. She uses the clues her father left behind, and the help of Langston Hughes’ poetry to get started on solving the mystery that might lead her to her missing dad.
Build, Fight, and Save the Princess! The evil wizard Grogan has attacked the neighbouring kingdom, destroyed the houses, and captured the princess Lumina. You have to go with Prince Solar to rebuild the broken villages, defeat the evil minions, and save the people. This is a point-and-click flashgame from Alawar Games. Each village presents a problem that you use your puzzle-cracking skills to solve. The artwork is beautiful, with each level having a completely different look. Hatsune Miku, whose name is Japanese for “first sound of the future” is a “vocaloid,” a computer programme that makes songs and melodies. Miku is the first vocaloid in the world to have a character avatar, voiced by Fujita Saki. The Internet sensation had her first ‘live’ concert in Tokyo in 2010, where her vocaloid friends Megurine Luka, Kagamine Rin and Len also made appearances. The Torch Holders of Imagination Jack Frost is about to join the ranks of Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Mr. Sandman. These guardians are the creators and protectors of hope and goodness in children around the world. For every good guy, there must be a bad guy. Pitch Black is the personification of the bogeyman, the villain eating away at all that is happy in the world, leaving behind terror and despair. What makes this movie special? Definitely the characters. We have a Santa Clause complete with tattoos and a thick Russian accent, a tooth fairy who’s human-hummingbird hybrid, an Australian Easter Bunny and a silent, but extremely powerful Sandman. The story is exciting throughout, with a few emotional scenes along the way.
