Jonaki's Headquarters Hey Friends! We’ve been hearing about cyclones all this week. Storms are pretty scary, but pretty awesome to study. Today we’ll look at how to make some clouds in a bottle, and hopefully understand

weather better. We’ll also be looking at how to make math problems easy breezy, so there’s a lot of fun and learning to look forward to. We’ve also got a lovely poem from our reader, Imaan, so do check her out

in Bhootum’s Classroom. We’d love to hear from all of you, read your poems and stories, so keep sending them in to treehouse@dhakatribune.com Have a great weekend!

DREAMS ON WHEELS

Fate takes on different faces: sometimes that of an angel and at others it’s downright evil. Little Robiul’s parents cannot afford toys for him, but the boy is often seen playing with a broken toy car in the afternoons – a toy that someone had discarded when the wheels broke off or maybe because their children

had grown tired of it. Fascinated by cars, as any other boy his age would be, Robiul dreams of having his own car one day. You can see his eyes sparkle when a shiny car passes by. Maybe he’ll get one; most likely, he won’t. Right now, he can dream away. Tasmia Nahreen Ahmed

Make Your Own Rock Candy Do this fun experiment with an adult to help you out! It is sure to bring a smile to the faces of all the sugar loving little Einsteins out there! BIGSTOCK

Penguins’ got style! Did you know there is a penguin species known as the “Macaroni Penguin”? Macaroni was a hairstyle in England and the Macaroni penguins were named after it. The yellow and black feathers sticking out of the sides of their heads looked like the English hairstyle! Munira Fidai

Tools: • • • • •

A wooden chopstick A clothespin 1 cup of water 2-3 cups of sugar A tall narrow glass

How to Step 1:

Clip the wooden chopstick into the clothespin so that it hangs down inside the empty glass and is about 2.5cm above the bottom of the glass for measurement, then remove it.

Step 2:

Get your adult help to boil 1 cup of water and pour ¼ cup of sugar. Stir till it dissolves.

Step 3:

Keep adding sugar, stir till dissolved, until no more will dissolve. This is time consuming as it will take longer for the sugar to dissolve each time. Once no more sugar will dissolve, remove it from heat and allow it to cool for 20 minutes.

Step 4:

Have your adult friend carefully pour the sugar solution into the jar almost to the top. Then submerge the skewer back into the glass making sure that it is hanging straight down the middle without touching the sides.

Step 5:

Wait till it cools. The sugar crystals will grow over the next 3-7 days. Add food colouring to your sugar water and make sure that it is pretty dark in colour for coloured rock candy. Munira Fidai

Cloud in a Bottle There are three weather elements that make up the ingredients to form a cloud. In this experiment, we will see how we can make each of these weather elements inside a bottle!

You will need:

A 2-litre plastic soda bottle Matches Warm water

The first element is water vapour:

Step 1: Fill the bottle one-third full of warm water and place the cap on. As the warm water starts to evaporate, it will add water vapour to the inside of the bottle. Observation: Squeeze and release the bottle. Observe that nothing happens. This is because the squeeze represents the warming that occurs in the atmosphere while the release represents the cooling that occurs in the atmosphere. This will become clearer later on. Note: If the inside of the bottle is covered with condensation or water droplets, just shake the bottle to get rid of them.

The second element is particles, like dust or smoke. Step 2: Remove the cap from the bottle. Light a match and hold the match near the opening of the bottle. Then drop the match BIGSTOCK into the bottle and quickly put on the cap, trapping the smoke inside. By doing this, we are creating particles in the air. The third element we need to form a cloud is air pressure. Step 3: Once again, slowly squeeze the bottle hard and release. What happens? A cloud appears when you release and disappears when you squeeze.

EXPLANATION:

The first ingredient, water vapour, which is water in its invisible gaseous state, can be made to condense into the form of small cloud droplets. Adding particles such as smoke enhances the process of water condensation. Finally, squeezing the bottle caused the air pressure to drop. These three weather elements together formed a cloud! PET TIPS

How to care for rabbits For those of you who love quiet pets like rabbits here’s what you need to know when taking care of one: 1. Home sweet home: Buy a hutch or cage that is four times bigger than your bunny so that it can move around and exercise. The hutch needs to be stood off the ground; damp proofed and kept out of direct sunlight. During rain or winter cover it up with a carpet type material so that your rabbit doesn’t fall sick. 2. Bunny Noms-Noms: Rabbits live on greens; therefore you can feed carrots, cabbages, cauliflower leaves, and broccolis. They can also have fruits like apples, mango, banana’s and grapes as treats. 3. Litter box: Even if your bunny lives in a cage, you need to have a litter box for him/her so that they can do their business and not make a mess out of their cage. 4. Rabbit Habits: With their tiny set of teeth they will still go around chew-

ing on your skirt to your sandals. Give them fruit tree wood branches in order to prevent them from gnawing on every single household item. 5. Hop-skip-play: Rabbits won’t run around you like a dog, or chase a laser light like a cat does. Throw some crumpled paper balls at them; better yet give them a cardboard box. Part of their playing is gnawing on readily available things. Rubab Nayeem Khan

William Alexander’s Ghoulish Song The Story:

Clockwork-enhanced people and ghastly fuel sources thrive in the town of Zombay, where young Kaile dreams of being a musician. When she shows compassion to a group of performing goblins, she is gifted an enchanted flute carved from bone, and when she plays it, she loses her shadow. Now Kaile is faced with the dual challenge of persuading her family she’s alive and learning more about the baffling flute and the power of GHOULISH SONG. • Ghoulish Song is not a sequel to author William Alexander’s Goblin Secrets.

We’d all like to encourage Junior’s budding artistic talents. But for every finger painting, and every crayon/pastel sketch, there’s a huge mess to clean up. And that is not counting the creativity that sometimes overflows onto walls and table-tops and other surfaces. Sometime during the 1950’s, French toymaker André Cassa-

some eerie MUST incidences from a read ghoul made of bones Book who threatens the entire town. • The word “pissing” is used once to mean “complaining”. • Overall, an appealing, often funny tale in which friendship, family bonds, kindness, music, and resourcefulness all comes together.

Any good?

The same lively style, creative plot and setting as Goblin Secrets return in Ghoulish Song. Bonus: appealing heroine. Munira Fidai

gnes invented a toy he named L’ecran Magique (The Magic Screen). It had a silver coloured screen in a bright red frame. You could use a stylus to draw on its surface and create pretty black-andgrey sketches. When you were done, or bored, all you had to do was shake it, and the screen went blank and you could start over. That simple. No mess! Ohio Art Company began to sell the toy under the name of Etch-a-sketch from their 1960 Christmas sales onwards, and it quickly became their biggest hit.

Today, several different versions of the original Etch-a-sketch are available. There are ones that let you make simple animations, others that allow you to make colour drawings. Other companies have come up with their own magic screens. This is a great gift for kids who are interested in art. You can find different types of Magic Screens at the Baby Shop (Rd 113, Gulshan) and Mother’s Care (Rd 11, Banani) Sabrina F Ahmad

Frankenweenie How much do you love your dog? Is it enough to maybe try getting him back from death? Tim Burton goes his usual creepy self, but this time he chooses friendship as the platform for his works. Victor is a young bright boy in the Frankenstein family. He likes fiddling with his machines, science experiments yet he loves his camera and films. He didn’t have many friends except for his dog Sparky. Mr. Whiskers, the pale white cat, had a dream about Victor and whoever he sees in his dreams end up in bad accidents.

The accident struck relentlessly but to Sparky. And Victor’s life falls into terrible sadness. Mr. Rzykruski, the scary looking (All the characters in the film were scary looking somehow) visionary science teacher from school, inspired Victor exceptionally and he always said: “it is okay to fail as long as you keep trying”. Influenced by this he tries with all his might to get Sparky back from the dead. The animation was done exceptionally well in black and white. Tim Burton has once again outdone himself. Here’s a game that’s really simple, good, clean and doesn’t ask for much. You play as Elly, the youngest daughter of a tycoon, who has been given the jewellers’ wing of her father’s business to manage. You start with a simple store and then design and sell rings, necklaces and earrings to expand to other branches. The money you earn from each level can be spent on upgrades for your store, like faster machines, and more expensive gems. There are a lot of levels to play, so if you get into the groove and want to see it through, you can spend a lot of time on it. Even though the stores change, the basic layout remains the same, so

you don’t have to keep learning new geography. Every two or three levels, there’s also a special challenge, like Souvenir Sale, or Rings Week, or the Exclusive sale, where you have slightly different tasks to fulfil. This keeps the game from getting too repetitive or boring. That being said, this game is not for you if you’ve played a lot of shop-based time-management games. There’s no new angle, so this might seem like the same old thing. The demo is available for download from www.bigfishgames.com Rating Sabrina F Ahmad

Adventure Time Originally titled “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake” developed by Pendleton ward, Adventure time is an adventure, science-fantasy, comedy show which only bears the concept of a kid’s show mostly because of its hand drawn animation and comic storyline. In fact this is a show that can also be viewed by the ‘decent-minded grown ups’. Though saying that, the theme of the show mostly consists of crazy and quirky sitcom of solid fantasy based adventure yet it still managed to capture the hearts of many of its adult viewers with its surprising twists of drama in the Plot. The show starts off with a 14 year old boy Finn and his best friend/adopted brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shapes at will. They set out to become adventurers on the post-apocalyptic land of Ooo. You want dimensional changes, raining swords, turning floors into lava? Name any, its right there in adventure time. Along the way, other characters such as Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, BMO and Marceline the Vampire Queen help them on their path to an epic adventure. Perhaps the best features of ‘Adventure Time’ are the subtle settings, but the characters make them of what they are. From one look this show may seem as comical as the usual animation. But you may eventually get drawn into the characters that have a very dramatic history which successfully twisted original comic storyline. Tashhid abdullah
