Would you believe me if I said there are musicians experimenting with sounds beyond your wildest imagination? These artistes are creating melodies that complement euphoria so purely you would think they tailored the songs specifically for such elated moments ByZaki Adnan These same melodies are also able to create the feeling of an altered state of mind, aka the “trippy” feel, in their listeners. Trip-hop is a subgenre of music that came into spotlight during the 1990s, and became especially popular in the UK. The essence of trip-hop derives from the smooth, synonymous beats of the hip-hop world. With a very atmospheric and ambient nature, trip-hop music blends the flavour of astounding electronica with a prolific bass line. De-

lay and flanger guitar effects are also recurring features of this magnificent branch of music. Portishead, an English Trio, is considered one the pioneers of trip-hop music. Their unique sense of experimentation with self-made guitar effects, another worldly electronic ambience, has earned them great prominence. They top it all off with the enthralling voice of Beth Gibbons. Here is a list of brilliant music that can take you on a trip you’ve never had before.

Information without searching.

As much as we love touching and swiping away on our smartphones, we all desire to have things simple and wireles By Mahmood Hossain

It’s certain many smartphone users have desired something very simple from their handsets. The ability to give you relevant information without searching for it, without typing away or swiping to find a specific app. For example, your phone telling you how the weather is outside and whether you need an umbrella to fend away the scattered rain shower. The tech titans, Google, have announced the Google Now application will be available on the iOS. Apple fans rejoice, your iPhone’s about to become smarter. You’ll just have to thank Google for it. It’s quite simple, really. Your phone is almost always with you, from the moment you wake up to the second you fall asleep. This application feeds you with information you thought you wouldn’t need or even ask for. How it works: • When the app first launches, it shows a set of virtual cards based on what you like and what you have already searched for.

• After choosing your desired ‘cards’, like your favourite sports team or the weather in your location, the updated cards will show up on the screen. If your screen becomes too populated or there is information you simply don’t want, you can easily swipe them away. • The application also responds to voice command similar to Apple’s Siri. • The app is so precise it will display relevant real-time information, like statistical data and current scores of a sport’s event. Google’s main focus with this app isn’t about competition with Apple. It’s quite simple, they want to provide the correct information as fast as the users want them.

The Merc Monsters Let’s take a ride outside the conventional this week. Try and imagine a vehicle that can literally go anywhere. When you think of Mercedes, you think fine-tuned and elegant engineering. There’s no thought of pure intimidation and no sex appeal. For the next generation, the Unimog (even sounds like a monster), has been upgraded by the German carmakers for a 10 model

range. It’s something the Terminator (yes, Arnold, we’re talking about you) would enjoy driving. There is an overall change to the design and a couple of new ‘BlueEffficiency’ engines to keep things acceptable with the Euro VI emissions regulations. The vehicle is also more fuel efficient than before and features solenoid (a coil wound into a tightly packed helix) injectors with ten-hole jets. The car also boasts

a new multifunction steering wheel, an adjustable steering column, better heating and cooling – an improvement in airflow. It’s for the heavy duty obligations, obviously, but it just goes to show that Mercedes is not on a one-track mind. Their continued effort in elegance and face-lifting certain monsters will make a significant change in the automotive world. Photo Source: Internet

Mercedes has completely redesigned the Unimog with: • Panoramic cabs, more room made by the new location of engine • New work and power hydraulics systems • Synergetic traction drive • Can change over from manual transmission to hydrostatic transmission while driving • Comes in a four and six cylinder variety • Power outputs ranging from 156bph to 354bhp • Can climb 45 degrees • Have an axle articulation of 30 degrees

Tell Letters to Mars

Going around in triangles

Bruised

Letters to Venus

By Avenue T Desk

I’m a 28-year-old man working at a marketing agency where I have fallen for a co-worker. She joined two weeks ago, and ever since the first time I spoke with her, I knew she was the one. There’s only one glitch – she’s in a serious relationship and only considers me a friend. Should I back off and stop talking to her, or should I pursue her? I know she knows I like her, but her attitude towards me hasn’t changed. She is still just as friendly towards me. K

Dear K, You have known this woman for merely two weeks and you’re already fussing about whether you should pursue or completely stop talking to her. Don’t boggle your mind with such trivialities. You’ve just gotten to know her, so try to enjoy this stage of your relationship. As for whether you should cut off all contact or pursue her, I have one question for you: why must you choose an extreme? Since she is already in a relationship, I would suggest you don’t blatantly flirt with her. Try to build a friendship. If she knows how you feel about her and still doesn’t mind the friendly rapport you two share, you have nothing to worry about. However, given that she’s in a serious relationship, keep in mind that there are certain boundaries that you should never cross. Best of luck!

I’m a 26-year-old woman in a serious relationship for the past two years. A week ago my boyfriend and I got into a major argument, and in the heat of the moment he hit me. He has always had a raging temper, but he never raised a hand on me before. This was a first. However, he apologised incessantly and constantly promised he’d never do it again. Every time I think of what happened, I’m frightened. Should I forgive him? P

No, Mama NO!

Parenting

My four-year-old daughter insists on clutching onto whatever she likes. If I take it away from her, she kicks up a fuss, and threatens me to return it to her. Nowadays it has gotten so bad that I cannot pacify her, so I give in to her demands. How do I stop this? N

Dear N, You can take one of two routes. You can allow your child to keep whatever item she has decided to hold on to, as long as it is not unsafe or bothersome. If you must take it back, request it back from her. If she refuses to return it, accept her decision, as long as she refuses politely. Your other alternative would be never to allow your daughter to get her way by threatening you with tantrums. Every time she yells to get what she wants, do not cave in to her demands. Ask her to stop speaking in that manner, and help her model a better response. It will be hard in the beginning, but once she realises you will not accept that sort of a behaviour, she will learn how to form more acceptable requests.

Clutcher I have a very stubborn five-year-old son who has recently developed a new habit of saying “no” to everything. Whether we’re having a regular conversation, or someone makes a request of him, he always replies “no”. This exasperates both my husband and I, and we often lose our tempers with him. If we try to discipline him, he misbehaves and yells. No amount of shouting or cajoling has helped break his habit. I’m frustrated and just can’t figure out how to deal with this. P

AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, M AY 23, 2013

P, It doesn’t matter if it’s the first time he has hit you or the umpteenth. You must understand the gravity of the situation – if a man can hit you once, he can do it again too. No woman should tolerate a man raising his hand on her. Any man who respects you will never, ever physically abuse you. You yourself have mentioned how “frightened” you feel – can you see yourself loving someone you are afraid of? Before he takes this any further, you should back out and leave. Leave the fear and pain behind and move on.

Dear P, Your child seems adamant about holding on to his newfound hobby. It’s your responsibility to make sure that he no longer enjoys saying the word “no” so much. Ask him questions that will solicit positive responses. For instance, when he’s in a good mood, ask him if he’d like to go to the park with you, or if he’d like a chocolate cake as a treat. If he does say “no”, don’t get easily irritated or angry. Ignore it; keep your calm. If he misbehaves and yells, again, don’t lose your temper. Instead, politely ask him to talk to you once he has calmed down.

Session

As the weather gets hotter, we suffer and toast under the sun By Mahmood Hossain Our common sense tells us to wear light clothing and avoid heavily accessorising. With summer right around the corner, the best way to keep cool and cut down on sweating is to wear shorts. Casual shorts in attractive prints and colours are a great way to take on the heat. There will be occasions when shorts will never be appropriate, but when the situation calls for it: gentlemen, let your legs show. The great thing about today’s fashion is that we have plenty of items we can easily make classy with the right

coordination. You can wear a nice pair of shorts with a polo shirt and a are along with casual shoes or sneakers to finish the look. Certain shorts made for the beach, while others can be used on a day-to-day basis. The shorts that are more versatile are the ones to aim for, since you don’t want to be restricted to the beach.

Before heading out to shop, think of the many looks you can put together with a single pair of shorts. You want them to last for the summer and keep you looking fresh and clean. Shorts are casual, comfortable, stylish, and, best of all, less expensive than other items in your wardrobe, so choose a couple to take to the check-out counter.

Let it shine

Q: I’m looking for something more stylish to wear at the gym. Is there anything other than Nike or Adidas? By Mahmood Hossain A: There are plenty of sports brands out there you can try, but why try to look attractive at the gym? It’s a place where you exercise to keep your body healthy. The last thing on your mind should be style. Wear something comfortable so that all your hard work and pain show afterwards.

Approach your dress shoes like you would your very own European supercar By Mahmood Hossain When it comes to dress shoes (oxford lace-ups, loafers, monkstraps, etc), it takes a little more effort to keep them in good condition. Although it may take time, taking care of you dress shoes is both simple and, believe it gentlemen, worth every second. Photo: Big Stock A typical shoeshine kit includes: •A shoeshine and polish brush •Shine or buffing cloths •A shoehorn •Standard brown and black polish •An all-purpose leather clean- er and conditioner

3. Polish – Once the shoes are dry, apply the right amount of polish and spread it evenly over the surface of your shoes with the polish brush. Again, the toothbrush can come to play here with those hard-to-reach areas on your shoes. Wait about 15-20 minutes for the polish to dry.

4. Back at it – After your shoes are completely dry, use the shoeshine brush to wipe off the polish. 5. Finisher – To complete the job, grab a lint-free shine cloth (or chamois) to give your shoes the shine they’re meant to have. Buff the shoes up using small and quick circular strokes.

Even if you don’t have every item listed above, you will still be able to keep your shoes in fantastic condition as long as you follow the correct procedure. 1.Prevention – Make sure your work area is covered with old rags or newspapers. You don’t want any of the polish staining your floors. Photo: Big Stock

2.Start fresh – You must always keep your shoes free of dust and debris before you start polishing. Use a shoeshine brush or a wet cloth to clean away the grime. Another great way to do this is use an old toothbrush to get in between the difficult areas.

Q: I’m meeting my girlfriend’s parents this weekend and I’m freaking out about what to wear when I meet them. I want to look presentable. Help! A: A few things to consider after you’ve taken care of your grooming (hygiene wise) are time, venue and occasion (casual or formal). If you’re meeting them during the day, you should aim for a lighter look. A short-sleeved polo shirt with dressy jeans or chinos will work just fine. Go for brighter colours under the sun, and opt for darker shades at night. If the occasion is more formal, there’s no need for a tie. Just put on a nice blazer or sports coat with solid colours and simple designs, not loud and “in your face” ones. Keep it simple and, for the love of all that is good, stay away from open-toed shoes.

Long hair has and always will be considered feminine, BUT short hair can be just as feminine if worn in the right way, such as with a cute dress, some killer heels and vibrant accessories By Su Jorgensen Photo: Internet

Thanks to new cutting techniques, they can be versatile, easy to style, and super feminine.

Twiggy, the 60s iconic British model, fashioned short hair thanks to Vidal Sasson, who also styled Mary Quant. At a very young age and while married to Frank Sinatra, Mia Farrow looked absolutely adorable with it and caused such a sensation that women were running into hair salons asking their hairdressers to give them the “Mia”. Remember the wonderful romantic film “Ghost” with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore? She had a supercool, short haircut in that, and the list goes on. One cannot forget the stylish “It girl”, British model Agyness Deyn, who revamped short hair a few years ago with a multitude of cool colours, nor the Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, who was nabbed for a Burberry campaign with her fresh, short haircut and was hailed the new Mia!

There is a myriad of fantastic short hairstyles out there to choose from. In addition, a short cut is a refreshing change in this seasonal heat! Short hair is a symbol of confidence, strength and empowerment that can make a woman’s face even more beautiful than it already is. Remember, it’s not how short your hair is but how you carry it that counts. Wear it with pride and keep in mind that hair grows at a rate of 1cm a month, so it will ALWAYS grow back. Just make sure you find a creative and personable hairstylist who will make it work for you, and try to find a picture that you like to avoid confusion. Also think about jazzing it up with a cool colour!

Beauty

Experiment with elegance Loud mouth, lush lashes or bold brows – what will your statement be this summer? By Tilat Khayer 3 Skin all aglow One of the favourite make-up trends of this spring/summer is the natural look. From flushed cheeks to dewy skin to minimal mascara, fresh-faced beauty is all the rage. This look is all about immaculate skin defined to perfection with just a hint of colour on the cheeks and eyes. 3 Attention grabbing eyes Bright eyes are the focus of the season. For this look, dab your eyelids with shades of turquoise, jade and vibrant aqua. For a Mediterranean look, try applying a thin streak of green eyeliner or a saturated smear of sapphire on the base of your eyelids. For a glamorous catwalk look, place a few sparkles around your eyes. 3 Experiment with eyeliner Ever since the cat-eye trend became a hit last year, eyeliner has become a newfound essential in our make-up bags. Whether you’re a fan of catflick or winged eyeliner shapes, make sure to add serious definition to your eyes by lining all the way around your waterline.

Pop of neon liner! I love the idea of spicing up neutral make-up with a single pop of neon liner on the bottom lash.

A new season entails new beauty trends, which in turn give you the opportunity to try out new looks and totally revamp your make-up kit. From bold brows to loud mouth pouts to eyeliner experiments, I’ve rounded up the hottest make-up trends from all the spring/summer 2013 fashion shows. This season you have the fashion gurus’ permission to play with colour! 3 Lush lashes From the inky, twiggy fringe to the curled and combed up look, it’s time to have fun with your lashes. Full, feminine, fluttery and quite openly faux lashes are definitely on display this summer. Adventurous ladies: dare to show your bold side with a heavy set of lashes offset by white liner. 3 Bold brows From big and bushy to deeply defined, statement eyebrows are big this season, and having the brow factor is an instant way to update your look. For full-on “wow brows”, brush down your eyebrow hairs to their natural shape, and fill in sparse areas with a pencil using short, feathery strokes to shape and even out their contours.

Tilat Khayer is an international make-up artist, who has worked with celebrities at London Fashion Week and Britain’s Next Top Model. Her brand Roshi operates in the UK and Bangladesh.

Loud mouth Bold lips in bright hues are a priceless make-up trend this summer. Whatever shade you choose, be it fuchsia pink, bold coral, power red or the dark and dramatic black cherry, make sure your pout does it justice. If you’re feeling a little wary about bright lips, go for a matte formula.

Haggling your way through Doja Sandwiched in the middle of Dhaka’s bustling shopping zone, the Badrudoja Market, more commonly known as “Dhaka College Market,” is a historic bazar that houses everything from designer denims and T-shirts to fancy dresses and accessories. Perfect for a weekend shopping adventure, this market is every bargainhunter’s shopping paradise. With a labyrinth of stalls, you may find Doja market a navigational nightmare, but it is the task of haggling that will probably get the best of you. Once you’ve beaten the heat and made your way through the chaos, it’s the bout of bargaining that will make or break your shopping deals. Do you plead, request, argue or negotiate? By N Anita Amreen

Market

Photos : Latif Hossain In Doja, haggling is an essential part of the shopping adventure. To really win the price war against the enthusiastic Bangali salesmen, you will need a strong, confident tongue and an armoury of sweet smiles. These seasoned salesmen can spot a defenseless customer from miles away. Don’t be taken in by their welcoming smiles and heartfelt offers of “cold drinks.” Once they’ve lured you into their stores, you’ll be cleverly hassled into buying more than what you need. To ensure you don’t get swayed by these experts, Avenue T brings you your very own guide to haggling your way through Doja. Once you’ve mastered the art

of bargaining, you’ll be surprised at your ability to make your money go further than you imagined. After we’re finished with you, you’ll realise that bargaining is more than just an argument; it’s a fun excuse to continue your shopping expedition while sticking to your preplanned budget! By the end of the day, you’ll have experienced the sheer pleasure of being able to make the perfect purchases while getting the most bang for your buck. Know thyself Before you barge into Doja and start imposing your avid demands on salesmen, set an idea in your

head of what you’re looking for. Arm yourself with a detailed list of exactly what you intend to purchase, and how much you are willing to pay for each item. Before you begin window-shopping and get carried away with the endless variety of clothes on display, attack your shopping list and search for what you need. Make it in the am Sellers consider the first sale of the day to be a lucky one. They’re always softer with the first customers of the day, believing that turning them away will bring bad luck for the rest of the day. The ideal way to get the

best bargains is to make it in the first few hours of the morning. Exude an air of indifference To seem like a seasoned Doja shopper, walk into a store maintaining a look of indifference. Even if you spot “just the top” you were looking for, do not give in to the overwhelming urge to squeal with delight. Casually toss it aside and look at a couple more similar items, enquiring about each one’s price. Somewhere along the line ask for the price of your favourite item.

Bargain discreetly

There’s nothing as disastrous as attracting an audience when bargaining. No seller wants other prospective buyers to know just how much discount he’s giving you. When haggling, do so out of earshot

Tip: Price Guide

Build a rapport After spending hours haggling with insufferable customers, several sellers are left feeling irritated. The simplest of words can make tempers flare. Engage in some light-hearted chitchat and build a rapport before asking for prices. You’ll be surprised at how far your smile can take you. Sellers are more prone to giving you better rates if they feel that you have the potential to be a long-term customer. Complain and find fault Do what Bangalis do best – complain and criticise every piece of clothing you intend to buy. This is a common tactic used to bring the price down. Use every flaw to your advantage, making sure you constantly have a dissatisfied look on your face. However, be careful not to offend your seller. Remember, no matter how good a deal you’re offering your seller, nobody wants to sell to an insufferable moaner.

Study the seller’s body language There are some sellers who are in for the final buy. Haughtily looking away, they name a price and that’s that. There’s no question of bargaining for that lot. To spot these types, study their body language. If they seem uneager to start negotiating, they’re definitely not interested. As Russell Peters famously joked: “Take it and go.” You will know if they are eager to negotiate when they smile, cajole and ask you for a better price. Make a smooth transition into the haggling war When naming your opening price, do so with utmost ease. That way you won’t look too enthusiastic and your seller will begin with a reasonable price. When he has named the opening price, chuckle and joke about how ridiculous his price is. This will catch him offguard, giving you more leeway to haggle. However, even when you are joking with the seller, your tone should be kept light so as not to insult him.

Show him the money Sometimes nothing works better than the image of an exasperated shopper: a person ready to cut to the chase and settle rather than waste time haggling. This trick works like magic if you gently tell him you’re tired of arguing, count your cash in his presence – a sign of finality – and tell him you’re only willing to purchase if he offers his “last price.” In times like these, sellers are ready to quickly name their final price, saving you the time and energy bargaining requires. Walk away The magic trick of a pro haggler is walking away empty-handed. After a nonstop bout of haggling, when your seller seems to have reached the very last price he is ready to offer, name your price and strut away with confidence. If he wants to strike a deal, he’ll call you back. If not, you can always forget about your ego and head back to get your treasured item.

Baked Masala Chicken with Spiced Potatoes

Direction:

Whole baked masala chicken has always been an all-time favourite in most Bangladeshi households. This easy recipe is simple to put together, yet packed with the richness of garam masala and finely chopped ginger and garlic. This wholesome dish is marinated with hot spices, then roasted to create a deliciously luscious dish that is served with a side of spiced potatoes By N Anita Amreen

Photo: Internet

Ingredients For the marinade f 4 tbsp lemon juice f 2 tbsp peeled, finely chopped root ginger f 2 tbsp finely chopped or crushed garlic f 3 hot green chillies, finely chopped f 1 tsp salt f 1 tsp ground coriander f 1 tsp garam masala

For the chicken f 1.75kg (3lb 14oz) whole

chicken, skin removed f tsp chilli powder f tsp freshly ground black pepper

For the roasted potatoes f 6 tbsp olive or sunflower oil f 5 medium potatoes, peeled,

halved lengthways, and cut into 5x4cm/2x1 in chunks f 1 Tsp of salt f 1 Tsp freshly ground black pepper f 1 tsp ground coriander f 1 tsp ground cumin f 1 Tsp turmeric f 1 tsp Kashmiri (mild) chilli powder

Preheat oven to 200C/400F. In a blender, process marinade ingredients to create a paste. Create two deep, diagonal cuts in each chicken breast, two in the thighs and two in the drumsticks. On a roasting tray, rest the chicken with the breast facing upwards. Line the tray with enough foil to completely cover the chicken. Rub the marinade paste over the chicken, ensuring the cuts get a good dose of marinade. Rest aside for 30 minutes. Evenly sprinkle the chilli powder and black pepper over the chicken. Fully cover the chicken in foil, with the seam closed at the top. Bake for an hour. Unwrap the foil and cook uncovered for 15 minutes, basting it three to four times with the chicken juices. Insert a skewer to check if the chicken is completely cooked. Preheat oven to 180C/350F. For the spicy potatoes, pour oil into a big bowl. Drop the potatoes in and sprinkle in salt and pepper. Coat completely and shift potatoes to a baking tray. Place in the centre of the oven and roast for 20 minutes. In a plate, mix coriander, cumin, turmeric and chilli powder. Remove potatoes from oven and roll them in the spice mix. Return potatoes to oven for 20 minutes, until slightly browned and tender when pierced. Rest chicken for 15 minutes, then serve with spicy potatoes.

Over the last decade, our lights and lamps have evolved into a potpourri of sizes and shapes. By M K Aaref Over the last decade, our lights and lamps have evolved into a potpourri of sizes and shapes. From chandeliers to floor lamps, light shops now offer a wide variety of lighting fixtures to choose from. While the funkier, highend designs of the West are yet to be found here, our collection of lamps remains impressive. While many of us opt for the modern look in our homes, we end up falling for the fascination of glitzy crystal. Traditionally, crystal chandeliers require a decor that complements their opulence. If placed in a modern apartment, the chandeliers appear somewhat out of place. Unfortunately, light shops in Dhaka – specifically

in Gulshan 1, Gulshan 2 and Segun Bagicha – do not hold multiple fixtures of the same design, so it is difficult to find the right lights for your house. Locally, a new category of handmade lamps has emerged for tabletops and floors. Handmade with colourful paper imprinted in various patterns, these lamps are quite affordable and bring a dash of ethno-chic to a room. Japanese ceiling lamps made from simple wires and recycled paper are also becoming available. Moreover, the terra-cotta lamps, used with either votive candles or electrical bulbs, impart patterned shadows in a room at night that are simply magical.

When choosing a lamp, make sure to keep an overall image of your room’s furniture layout in mind, and try to visualise the ambience of the room with that lamp lit in it AVE N U E T TH U RSDAY, M AY 23 , 20 1 3
